Luke's Asphalt Paving

Luke's Asphalt did a nice job and gave a very competitive price. They were a pleasure to work with, following through on what they promised.

WOW! These folks do it right. We called Luke's for a quote, Dallas came out, took pictures, and had an estimate to us within a day. To our pleasant surprise, the quote was better than several others. We scheduled a date but Dallas called and said his crew would be able to pave our driveway earlier than scheduled. They were on site and working within the hour. Everyone involved, from the superintendent (Ryan) to the equipment operators, were extremely professional, polite and courteous. After they were finished, Ryan walked the driveway with us making sure all was to our satisfaction. They by far exceeded our expectations and we would highly recommend them!

I was very happy with work that was done this past May. but then asphalt is now starting to cracked in several areas. I have attempted to contact Dallas Luke via emails and phone messages and have not yet received a call back from him. I did call office and leave message and did get one return call from a nice woman who said she will make sure I get a call back, but still waiting>> As much as I paid for the work to be done, I hoped to get good quality. Just want Luke's Asphalt to make thing right!!!

Went very well. Crew was very professional and provided a quality project. Dallas Luke was good to work with, providing an up-front estimate, keeping us informed as to schedule, and following through completing on time.

Luke's was very responsive to my request for initial estimate arriving as scheduled and answering all of my questions. We communicated by email while waiting for weather to clear and work to begin. The team arrived promptly as scheduled. They were very efficient and polite even taking time to suggest we close garage to avoid dust on our car. We are pleased with the quality of the job and attention to detail and would definitely hire again if needed.

We first spoke with Dallas regarding paving our driveway in November of 2015, just after the second serious flooding of the year in the Hill Country. Dallas explained that they were somewhat behind due to their asphalt supplier closing their plant due to the inclement weather and that they were somewhat at their mercy as to when they could proceed. Since it is simply a driveway and the reason for paving it is because it washed out every time we had a serious rain, we had no problem with having no set date for them to come out and do the job. Dallas told us that it would only take one day. Once the holiday season had ended. Dallas called us one morning and told us they would be coming out in about an hour to begin the grading that precedes the paving. Since we are semi-retired and home almost all of the time during the winter, we were delighted. They showed up, regraded using the existing mixture of dirt and crushed granite, and did the paving. They worked quickly, quietly, and from what I could tell completely professionally. The original quote called for a 12' wide driveway and parking area, graded and paved, at a cost of $4800. The reason it ended up costing $4995 was due to their having some left over paving asphalt and offering to extend the paving to include the walkway between the house and our workshop at the top of the driveway for $195. From what I have gathered from talking to both Dallas and others we have known who have had similar work done, pavers normally order more than they need, just so they are sure to have enough. We were delighted to get this area paved as well. What we eventually ended up with was a 16' wide driveway, a large parking area for at least two vehicles, and an extension that allows us to get from the driveway and the house to the workshop without ever leaving the asphalt. My wife and I found Dallas and his crew to be professional and dedicated to doing their best, and we intend to use Luke Asphalting again in the future should we have additional paving needs. As for the quality of their work, I don't believe my wife or I are in a position to judge the quality of their work two weeks after it was done. That is something time will tell. We do know we will have far less drainage issues due to water running down the driveway and depositing the dirt and gravel from the driveway in the street.

I have used Dallas Luke twice now, once to replace an entire asphalt drivway and most recently to seal on. I am extremely pleased with the work and customer service, and will happily use them again.

Luke's crew was on time and finished all of the work in one day. They over sealed a 15 year-old driveway, plus took the care to reseat our gate sensor cable and make sure it was properly covered. The edge of the drive near the house borders an aggregate finish in front of the garage doors, and they did a clean job of not letting the asphalt get onto the aggregate. Luke's Asphalt made our old drive way look great again! I will definitely use them again, if needed and highly recommend them! Dallas was great to work with!

I am filing a formal complaint against Luke?s Asphalt. I hired Luke?s Asphalt in Dec 2014 to completely redo the asphalt driveway at my residence. The contracted price was $14500. My driveway surface is approximately 4000 sq. ft. Copies of all receipts, along with photographs and 2 different sets of survey data are available upon request. Luke?s Asphalt did not perform the job properly. There are three serious issues with the driveway. 1. Reverse drainage into the carport. Photos are available upon request. 2 x survey drawings available upon request. 2. French drain outlet location is improper and causes backup which adds to flooding of the carport. Photos are available upon request. 2 x survey drawings available upon request. 3. Numerous serious cracks in the surface after less than a year from job completion. Photos are available upon request. Some cracks are more than 20 ft. long. The cracks are more than 1 ½ in. wide in some spots. There are at least 18 cracks of a serious nature. My wife and I have brought these issues to the attention of the two Luke principals multiple times. No repairs have yet been made. Also, the two Luke principals on three separate occasions have acted in an extremely unprofessional manner, berating myself and my wife over the phone and via text message with coarse, threatening language. Copies of the text messaging are available upon request. In the most recent phone conversation, one of the principals questioned my manhood at least ten times in a ten minute phone conversation, the morning of 6 Oct 2015. Our requirements were very clear to Luke?s Asphalt. We specified that we wanted positive flow away from the carport. We specified that we wanted an approximate 2 inch vertical spacing from the concrete carport surface to the new asphalt. We specified that the French drain needed to be addressed properly and that it should be exhausted in approximately the same manner as it existed prior to Luke?s Asphalt commencing work. We were specific on how the surface drainage flowed off the adjacent steps from the backyard. There were no surprises and no additions to the agreed work on our part. To be clear, the driveway drainage was fine prior to Luke?s Asphalt beginning the work. We simply wanted them to replace the existing asphalt which had deteriorated. At no time prior to Luke?s Asphalt arriving on property was there a drainage problem. At no time prior to starting the job did Luke?s Asphalt raise any concerns about complying with our specifications. At no time did Luke?s Asphalt state that any of our specifications were unworkable or that they would accomplish the job in different manner than we specified. At no time were there any questions whatsoever. Why are we filing this complaint only now? There are several reasons. First and most importantly, we wanted to work the issue out with Luke?s Asphalt and assumed they would not have a problem correcting their errors. The drainage problems did not become apparent until the first big rains occurred in April, 2015. We made contact with Mr. Dallas Luke and he came out to look at the driveway. At first he was reluctant to acknowledge that there was an issue but when shown the photographs, demonstrated the reverse flow, and shown the cracks, he conceded. His exact quote was, ?I?m not an a*****e, I will fix your driveway.? Again, that is a direct quote. There was another delay while we waited for him to clear time on his schedule to make the repairs. Gradually it became apparent that Luke?s Asphalt really did not have any interest in making the repairs. We then decided to hire an engineer to accomplish a survey of the driveway and prepare a plan to restore proper drainage. There was additional delay at this time because the surveyor and his family were apparently affected by the flooding in San Marcos, TX in approximately May 2015. Eventually the survey was accomplished, but was misplaced and there were additional delays with the engineer. This survey is available upon request. Because of the engineering delays, we decided to obtain another engineering plan from a different firm. This survey and plan were accomplished in fall, 2015 and a repair proposal submitted on approximately 1 Dec 2015. This proposal is available upon request. After receiving the second engineering report, I again contacted Mr. Dallas Luke to make one last attempt to see if he was willing to repair the driveway and drainage. He stopped by the house without an appointment on 6 Oct 2015. Fortunately I was home and observed his arrival. I showed him both sets of survey data. We spoke professionally that morning and I suggested that a settlement might be in the best interest of both parties and offered an amount. He seemed to be inclined to settle but indicated he needed to talk to his father who apparently is also a principal in Luke?s Asphalt. He said he would get back to me and departed. About 20 minutes later I received a phone call from Mr. Billy Luke who is apparently Dallas Luke?s father. He told me in no uncertain terms that there would be no settlement and no repair. His language was very unprofessional. His reasons seemed to be that, number one; my house was in a hole. His exact quote was ?You live in a hole.? He repeated this at least six times. Second, he said that our house must have sunk 3 inches between Dec 2014 and April 2015 for the reverse drainage to occur. To be clear, the house was built in 1955. Third, that it was unfair of us to take advantage of a small business. His exact quote was, ?What kind of man are you?? Mr. Luke repeated this many times over the course of a ten minute conversation. He concluded the call by saying that there would be no further talk of a settlement or repair and not to contact Luke?s Asphalt again. I thanked him for his time and the call was terminated. There has been no further contact between us and Luke?s Asphalt since that day, 6 Oct 2015. Here is how Luke?s Asphalt may respond to this complaint. They may say that we don?t pay our bills. This would be incorrect. The agreed upon price for the driveway was $10500. This was for the asphalt work, including the French drain pipe. Again I would like to emphasize that the French drain pipe was always part of the project. This was completely understood by Dallas Luke and no question was ever raised. My wife and I verbally directed him to outlet the drain in approximately the same manner as the pre-existing drain, which he did not. Prior to hiring Luke?s, we discussed demolition at length. Dallas Luke attempted to find a sub-contractor to accomplish the demo but could not. He finally said that he could do it for $1 per square foot which I agreed to and we verbally agreed that the driveway surface was approximately 4000 sq. ft. However, no estimate was ever completed which added the demo. When the job was complete, Luke?s Asphalt submitted a bill for $15900. I advised Dallas Luke of the estimate for both demo and driveway and he agreed to accept the original estimate of $10500 + $4000 for demo, for a total $14500. At that time Dallas Luke did not indicate that there was an issue with the $14500 payment amount. In fact, Dallas Luke made no mention of the money until we sent him photos of water in the carport 4 months later in April 2015. Copies of these emails, estimates and bills are available upon request. I would like to emphasize that this payment was made promptly. Luke?s Asphalt may maintain that they demonstrated that the driveway drained properly. It is true that Dallas Luke did show me with a hose that the driveway drained. However the amount of water from a hose and a rainstorm is very different. Also if a person places a hose in one spot and then moves it a foot closer to the carport, the result is very different. It is a fact that Luke?s Asphalt, for whatever reason created a ridge in the asphalt over an approximate 50 sq. ft. section that allows water to reverse in to the carport. This has allowed at least two inches of water to drain in to the carport on several occasions. Only by sandbagging the carport can we prevent it. Dallas Luke acknowledged this on more than one occasion to us. Luke?s Asphalt may maintain that they were not given adequate guidance on how to accomplish the drain pipe work. This would also be incorrect. They may say that they had to re-do the drain line one time at my direction. That is true. However, the manner in which they first laid the drain was even worse than the current situation. That first drain outlet was even further upslope than the current faulty solution and additionally was a tripping hazard as it was situated very close to the stairs to the backyard. When I queried Dallas Luke about why he just didn?t do it the same way as the pre-existing drain (again, which worked well and was acknowledged by Dallas Luke prior to starting the job) he said he did it differently because, ?I don?t like the way it looked before.? Finally, Luke?s Asphalt may say that the house was in a hole or that the property sank 3 inches in 4 months; representations which have been detailed above. In conclusion we are asking for a refund of the entire contracted and paid price, $14500.

The area is much larger than provided for in the coupon, so I asked for an estimate for the total job. Mr. Luke came to my home to look over the driveway and give me an estimate. He informed me that my driveway only had superficial cracks that were more cosmetic that damaging. He said I was not in danger of losing my driveway and that it was good for another couple of years. I greatly appreciate his honesty and I will definitely have him take a look at in two years. I will akk Angie's List for a refund of the cost of the coupon.
