First the good. Eric, the technician was a very personable guy who seemed happy to explain things as he went through the procedure. Even called a few hours after he left to check and see if we had gotten the gas turned back on to the house. The not so good. Appointment was scheduled for 0800. Were told we would get a courtesy call around 0730. Time passed and no call. At 0800 I called the company to see if we were still on the schedule. I was assured that we were and technician running late because he had to go by the office and get some tools. Should be at the house around 0830-0840. He go here at 0920. After verifying the five gas appliances in the house, he checked to make sure the gas supply to each one was turned off. He found the fireplace supply still on and secured it. He then hooked up a bicycle pump at the gas meter and brought the air in the line up to 12psi. He said the pump would need to remain in place at least 30 minutes. After 30 minutes there was no loss of air pressure in the line. We stood around the fireplace talking and my wife reiterated that the strongest gas smell the day before had come in the family room (fireplace location). We looked at the fireplace again and no light bulbs went on. Finally I realized the gas supply to the log set was off and therefore we didn't have an end-to-end test happening. I asked Eric to turn the gas supply to the logs back on and BINGO! You could hear the air hissing as the pressure in the line dropped. Eric did disconnect the log set and re-dope the pipes before reconnecting to see if that's where the problem was. It wasn't where the problem was and appears to be with the gas log set valve which is being replaced. What we find most disturbing is that we spent almost $650 for a guy with a bicycle pump to not find the problem until I pointed out that the gas supply to the logs was off and needed to be turned back on to check the system end-to-end. Something I consider basic troubleshooting whether it's a natural gas system, plumbing system, electrical system, etc. I'm still not clear what the $150+ permit cost was. Grey Forest Utilities turned off the gas to he house. And they sent someone out to turn it back on after it was explained the problem had been found and the gas log supply line secured. Where does a "permit" come in? Especially at that price. We also were asked to complete a hard copy of a review for Angie's List while the plumber waited which was totally inappropriate. We declined saying that we would submit an online review.
