They were punctual and both of the people that showed up were knowledgeable about the work that they were doing. They were knowledgeable in my frame of reference in that they didn’t have to run back and forth for different things; they had what they needed and went ahead and fixed it. I would use them again in the future if I needed to.

I contacted them for a second opinion and from the advice I receive and the expertise they displayed, I knew I made the right decision to use them for my A/C job. They quickly diagnosed the problem and provided the most cost-effective and best quality solution. The parts arrived quickly and were installed immediately. Job site was left neat and clean. Based on this experience, I will contact them again to advantage of their other services.

Description of Work: We have used Shafer Services several times and always have had excellent service. While they were at our house installing a new water heater, I mentioned to Bob (the technician) that we had a leaky shower. He took a look and said that he would schedule the first date open to repair it. We have had at least 3 other repairmen over to look at the leak with no luck. Bob from Shafer fixed this leak!

+ -1 moreShafer responded to my service request in a timely manner. Two of their service people came out when scheduled. They looked at the area where the water was leaking from below-ground, from the water pipe that served the outdoor faucet attached to the house. Without digging to determine where the leak was (how far below ground), they wrote up an estimate based on what they observed, and what their service price list was in their manual. I was quoted about $300, including the service call, and also including a 10% discount for first-time Angie's List customer. I asked how they knew what the repair would cost without knowing where the leak was coming from (how far down the pipe). The answer was that it would "either be an easy way or a hard way" to repair. When I asked for clarification, he referenced in the manual their two-tiered pricing structure, the lower ($300) being for something that's just a few inches down, and the higher ($500) being for a leak that's further. I was not sure about this estimate for my particular situation, so I advised that I would let them know if I wanted to schedule. I called another service provider for a second estimate. They came out quickly, dug down to find where the leak was, fixed it quickly, and charged me about 1/3 the lower price listed above. I'm sure that some customers would prefer knowing that they only have to pay the fixed price upfront for something that will have an unknown level of repair, rather than waiting to find out that the repair might end up costing hundreds more than that fixed price. But I prefer to pay for what is actually repaired, and to not subsidize other repairs through a fixed-price service.

+ -1 moreWe made a call to have our water heater looked at after a hose had broken and leaked water all over our garage. The answering person was very kind and helpful. We were told someone could be here between 1 and 3, and they arrived at about 1:20! My husband had already fixed the problem, but was unable to turn the water heater back on. The service person was able to do that (in seconds) and did not charge extra for a "relighting fee", which we appreciated SO very much! He was also very kind and professional.I am beyond pleased with our experience, and will call them again when needed.
Description of Work: A technician came and relit our water heater, after it a hose had broken off and leaked water all over our garage. Mu husband replaced the broken hose, but could not relight the unit.

+ -1 moreThey were running about 45 mins behind, and I had to contact the main phone number to check on them. Just as I was checking about the arrival time, they pulled up. Once they arrived, were very professional and listened as I gave the problem. They then gave me all the options of what the problem could be. I gave the ok to start trying to locate the problem. They were very quick in locating the clog, and keep me up to date on their progress. I was very pleased with the work done. My only concern is letting the customer know of delays, when an appt time has been given. I totally understand about delays, just like to kept informed. I believe this to be the dispatch area, and not the plumber's area.
Description of Work: Over flow pipe for the washing machine was overflowing. Shafer Services came out, told me of the different scenarios that it could be, and then proceeded with the first option, and was pretty confident that it would be fixed.

Chris explained all about their services and how their charges ran. They did the job quickly and professionally. It is evident they take pride in their work. I would definitely use Shafer Services again and ask for Chris. I found out they also do HVAC and I will call them for HVAC when I need it. Great Company!!
Description of Work: I called Shafer Services based on Angie's reports. We had gotten a notice from the Water Dept. that based on their testing that we might have a leak somewhere in the yard. When Chris got to the house, I showed him the letter and where SAWS had marked the place for the leak. He explained what could possible be the cause, then investigated it and fixed it. There was a crack in a pipe and Chris fixed it quickly.

+ -1 moreI am remodeling a master bath, and needed to have measurements verified for correct placement of the tub drain in case it was misplaced before the cement floor could be poured and hard wood floor installed and an estimate to perform the tub installation. Shafer Services sent out a plumber who did the verification and was going to give me an estimate to install tub. He charged me almost $100 to verify that the drain was in the right place and said he would get a written estimate to me in a few days for the final installation of the tub. After calling them a second time,a couple weeks later, I still did not receive their estimate. After all the floor work was finished I still hadn't heard back from Shafer. I proceeded to hire another licensed plumber to install the tub. It turned out that the hole Shafer said was for the tub drain was really the overflow pipe and not the drain. On top of that, Shafer said the wall needed to be built out in order for him to have space to install. The licensed plumber I finally hired for the install had to cut into the hard wood floor and chip away the concrete in order to place the drain line in the right location as Shafer had made an error. The drain needed to be another 11" from the overflow causing an 11" cut into the hard wood floor wide enough to fit the drain pipe. This has not only disfigured the beautiful hard wood floor but I have incurred additional costs and delays to install the job right.
Description of Work: Wrapped a pipe for tub drain so flooring workers could complete floor. Also verified measurements for proper tub install.

Explained what he had done and described a possible problem in the future. Said nothing was necessary right noow. Shafer probably isn't the cheapest service in town, but I doubt there is any better.
Description of Work: I have an annual contract with check-up on functioning of A/C, Heating and Plumbing systems in my home. The October visit was for the Heating system. I get reminders to set up these appointments from friendly office personnel.

+ -1 moreAfter reviewing multiple listings on Angie's List for plumbing services, I ultimately decided upon Shafer due to the large number of reports they had, as well as the nominations for pages of happiness. The one them I noticed in the reviews was that the pricing seemed a little high, but the reviewers seemed to be very pleased with the work. I did learn that Shafer offers a 1-year warranty on all work performed, so that alone is worth a little more in up front costs. I had called for service on a Tuesday, wanting it to occur towards the end of the week. They accommodated me for Friday morning. The young lady who took my order request called me back to make sure I was aware of the $49 service call, regardless of whether any work was done or not. I was aware. The 2-man crew showed up on time, driving a professionally labeled company van. They also had on uniforms with the company name embroidered, along with their names as well. After reviewing the three jobs I had for them, an estimate was written out, for which I signed and agreed. It is important to note that Shafer has standard charges based upon each job to be performed and not based upon time required to do the jobs in total. The estimate included the $49 service call. They proceeded with the work in a methodical and efficient manner. When it was time to work on the piping under the kitchen sink, the lead crew member decided to not charge for that after all - he said that the repair was just too simple! How often do you come across that? They used protective drop cloths and also cleaned up nicely after themselves when the projects were done. I highly recommend Shafer for any plumbing needs. I will definitely call them back when other, bigger-than-we-can-handle, plumbing jobs arise in our older home.
Description of Work: Our house was built in 1980, so there are mishmash of plumbing issues that are starting to pop up. There were 3 issues addressed during this service call. The master shower had developed a fairly serious dripping leak. We had personally replaced the cartridge in the assembly which worked for a few weeks, then the leak began again. Needed someone who actually knew what they were doing! The Shafer crew evaluated the issue and determined that a more "hefty" copper cartridge was needed. They also indicated that quite often the old cartridge (the original one that we replaced) will leave behind a broken off element in the assembly which many folks won't know to look for, which happened in our case. That shower hasn't dripped at all since they repaired it. The hot water copper connection & valve for our washing machine was seriously corroded, and it was just a matter of time before it would break off, leaving us with a plumbing emergency. The crew looked at the corroded connection and recommended having both hot and cold water connections replaced at the same time. Turns out that the cold water connection was corroded, too. Required turning the water off to the house from the main valve by the street, after which the crew cut off the old corroded piping & fittings and replaced them with shiny new fittings. After turning water back on to house, they continued to monitor the connections to ensure that they weren't leaking at all. They even made sure that I understood how to turn them on/off should the need arise. They are working beautifully. The third item was a leak that had developed under one side of our kitchen sink. Turns out that one of the PVC pipes was cracked and had to be replaced. It is as dry as can be now under that sink, since that pipe has been repaired.

+ 0 moreWe have used Shafer Services numerous times for our plumbing problems since we found them on Angie's List. We have always been extremely pleased with their professionalism. Technicians always arrive quickly; we do not have to wait days for someone to get here. They are always neat, clean, and thorough. They complete the repair in a reasonable amount of time and always clean up nicely. When our a/c died in our horrible hot summer weather, we decided to try Shafer for this problem. As indicated above, they came quickly and fixed the problem correctly. We were extremely happy with the outcome. Shafer now has an air conditioning customer.
Description of Work: We returned at midnight from an extended vacation. When we entered the house, we discovered that the a/c had broken down. After spending the night in a hotel, we called Shafer Services the next morning. Their technician Jessie arrived within 2 hours of when we called, checked out the a/c system, and found a bad capacitor. He repaired the problem quickly and checked out the system. We had cold air before noon. Problem solved.

+ 0 moreIt was taking a really long time for the hot water to get hot, since the kitchen and master bath is a long way away from the hot water heater. I called Shafer one morning, and Chris came out within an hour. He ordered parts for a hot water recirculator system, and came back a couple of days later to install once the parts came in. Everything works great. No more wasting the shower water waiting for it to get hot. Chris was exceptionally neat and clean with all of the work and tools, etc. I had no concerns having him in my home, and would recommend their service.
Description of Work: Installation of a hot water recirculator system, replacing a leaky toilet valve and cleaning out a faucet line.

Their work is excellent. Always on time. Calls when they are on their way. Calls or emails to remind me when it is time to schedule service. On the few occasions I have had a problem, they were Johnny-on-the-spot. I just do not worry about my plumbing, heating, or air conditioning - that worry time can be spent on other things. I know they are going to professionally take care of this equipment and not try to sell me something I do not need. They take the time to answer questions and teach. Could not be more pleased with the quality or service.

+ -1 moreI had used them in the past. They were quite prompt in their response. It was an emergency and it was between 15 and 20 minutes before they were here. I felt what they charged me was reasonable considering that it was an emergency. They noticed that there was a $25 coupon in the monthly magazine which I hadn’t even noticed. I just grabbed the magazine, found them and called them. I had used them before and I’m not sure if I was really impressed with them when I had used them in the past, but my emergency request was terrific. There’s an ad in the monthly magazine about them and they have a good response and good rating. I would use them again in the future if need be.

Description of Work: The AC at our rental property was not cooling properly. I had noticed in the past, two of my neighbors used Shafer Services. I checked on Angie's list as to their history of service and decided to give them a call. They promptly came out and was able to get the existing unit cooling again, but it needed additional cleaning. I wish to also point out we were having over 100 degree days at that time! Because of the cost of the cleaning to be done to an existing 15 year old unit, with no warranty, I opted to just put in a new unit. The design consultant for their company came out to talk with us the same day 8/18/11. He was very helpful, informative, respectful, and professional. We decided on a unit, he explained everything that would be done and arranged for them to start and complete the job on 8/22/11. They arrived at 9 am and completed the work by 3:30 that afternoon. From my first phone call with the young lady at Shafer Services that sent someone immediately, to the Technician "Tom, to the Design Consultant Gregg, to all the Gentlemen that came to our house to install the heating & AC unit; we couldn't have asked for a more respectful and professional group of people! It is scary enough to have to spend such an amount on a necessity for your home without worrying whether you called the RIGHT company or not! We sincerely appreciated how everyone took extra effort to keep our property clean during and after their work as well. + -1 moreOverall, my wife, who was present at my son's house, said that that Chris indicated that the shower cartridge was the problem (known issue with Moen product). Provided an estimate of 191.00 parts and labor. My wife gave the go-ahead and the part was replaced and problem was solved. Initially the appt was from 2-4 pm, however they called stating that there had been a cancellation and would be able to come within 30 min of the phone call. They did.
Description of Work: Shower was leaking, Chris found that the cartridge was bad and also was a generic one initially installed. Chris replaced it with a manufacturer's cartridge, problem was solved. Quick, easy, and very professional. Will use them again!
