 + -1 moreThey were very friendly and helpful upon my visit, but an extremely disappointing outcome.
Description of Work: From YEARS of wear, my diamond eternity ring had broken and I wanted to use the stones in a new setting, either white gold or platinum. After looking at styles and talking for over an hour with the jeweler I decided on the setting the jeweler recommended. I left the ring and was told to expect a call within 5 - 7 days for the final estimate. Thirteen days later I called them to check on the progress as I hadn't heard anything. I was told the jeweler was waiting for permission to take the diamonds out in order to find a setting the diamonds might work in because the ring the jeweler (his recommendation) and I picked out wouldn't work. Then I was told it would take another 5 days to get an estimate. No one had tried to reach me the first time, I wasn't about to wait another 13 days with no word. I will be taking my ring elsewhere. Very disappointing customer service.

 + -1 moreWhen my partner's mother died, we didn't know what jewelry was real and what was fake. This place was recommended by Moretti's Fine Jewelry. Moretti's is the only San Antonio member of the American Gem Society, but doesn't do appraisals unless you're buying/selling there. The woman at the counter of Penaloza and Sons was able to quickly eliminate some pieces. A week later, I got a call explaining that two remaining pieces were costume jewelry, but all the rest was real, and would cost $600 to appraise. Two weeks later, the appraisal was done for exactly that cost, including photos, thorough descriptions of each piece, and the base price used for the metal. The jewels had been cleaned as well. (The total value of jewelry was about $30,000.) The appraiser has a graduate gemologist degree, and the store is open on Saturdays.
Description of Work: Appraised 9 pieces of inherited jewelry.
