They were very nice but I decided not to use them. They had been highly rated by some other users, so I wanted to talk to them. They were very professional. All I was having done was my concrete slab re-poured on the patio and I was able to find someone who could do it for less. I might use them in the future if there is something specific that I couldn't find cheaper than somewhere else.
Description of Work: Masonry Arts came out and gave me an estimate for a patio in February.

In april of 2010, Bob Abel worked with me to design a flagstone patio for our back yard. I needed to have the patio built before I could re-do the deck that was above it. Bob helped me select the flagstone and mortar to go with the deck and house. His crew came out, excavated for the patio base, installed limestone wall to level the area for the patio, filled the excavation with cement stabilized base, and then installed the flagstone surface. after this portion of the project was completed, I had another contractor re-do the deck and install stairs going from the deck to the patio. I then had a contractor build wrought iron railings for steps to go from the patio to the yard. Bob Abel and his crew came back in april 2011 and installed the railings and built flagstone steps to go with them. They also did some minor mortar trim around the new deck. The end result is a very beautiful deck and patio.
Description of Work: Built flagstone patio below deck in back yard.

I was pleased that this job went perfect too, as this yard was on a steep slope & much more difficult & costly than a normal job. We re-inforced all with Portland cement mixed in with the compacted base & installed a stone retaininng wall at the edges to withstand the slope & compaction. Over a year later, the member hired us to come back & do additional steps, etc. Being on a slope & over a year later, there are still no cracks on the original flagstone patio. All looks great.

Great! Very professional and courteous. It took us a little while to decide on a color, but they were very flexible and happy to work with us. Even took the initiative to get a couple of alternate color samples and put them up on the wall. Went ahead and re-plastered the walls that were really bad even though this wasn't in the initial proposal. I would definitely recommend and use them in the future!

The job was okay. The owner was absolutely wonderful. They fixed the mailbox and did a wonderful job. It was perfect. Then they were to do a flagstone patio and a flagstone floor in the Jacuzzi room. The group that did it made a mess in my backyard and killed all my grass. They messed up the storage stuff, the hose that was on display that had all these different things on it. They were swinging things up and I had grout on the walls as well as the outside of my house. They were very messy. They then got a rock that was not up to my liking. They said that they would take it back but they did not do anything about it. They should have said that the rock was not acceptable and taken it back or done something else. But, they did not. I would not give them the wonderful rating that they had before. They were very nice but I was not totally satisfied with everything that happened in my house. They put the floor down. I said that I wanted it to be even and level because I had a sister who had difficulty in walking as she had Down's syndrome. There were ditches in it and they did not use the rock like I thought that they would use. I thought that the price was high for what I ended up with. The price would have been fine if I had ended up with what I wanted to in the first place. The owner himself had to come out to re-do some of the things because he was not pleased with it. I would not call them again. It was my mistake as I should have put my foot down and told them to get rid of the rock. I should have told them to get the other rock.
Description of Work: I have used the services of Masonry Arts two years ago for masonry work. They did a flagstone patio and a flagstone floor in the Jacuzzi room.

Wow, I'm very surprised by some exaggerated things in this 2 year-old report, & ratings, especially after how hard I worked to correct anything & everything she didn't like, & was OK at the time! Again, it was 2 years ago & at that time I was real busy I used a mason subcontractor named Frank & his crew to help me out. I had used him on many jobs & was excellent, so I had total confidence in him. This time he seemed a little sloppy/tired & had a new helper with the crew, so I stayed on top of them cleaning & inspecting, but not all as bad as in this report. The short term "dead" grass was the only area where we HAD to work & store the sand/cement/stone, as to be expected, but was cleaned up. Masonry is always the messiest of any trade - see any house being built. But we are careful & clean up. THE MAIN THING the member wasn't pleased with was the stone itself! It was for a sun room floor & when finished, she expected it to be as smooth as tile. I had first shown her photos of what to expect & explained about the mortar joints are not always flush & stone not always flat like tile as is natural patio stone. At that time in mid-summer, there was very little selection left of the color stone she wanted due to unusual peak demand. I went all over looking for it & picked the best left in 2 counties from a supplier I rarely use as they don't have a scale. I even lost $160 as this stone was more expensive than budgeted, & with no scale, I had to go back & buy extra to be safe. Flagstone is always on pallets & wire mesh covered = you can only see the top row & the sides, & this color all comes from Mexico. Once got the non-returnable stone to site it was slightly less smooth than I like, but not real bad, especially for patio stone. So we made the best out of it as NOTHING else was available. Frank & I spent a long time & came back twice chipping & scraping the stone to try to please her & correct some mortar depth mistakes I didn't like either. Frank's helper had cleaned a few mortar joints down too low so I made Frank re-do many to please her & I helped. After the 2nd trip to come back try more work, & much more time, Frank started getting mad at me & her, & said she was way too picky & this was very acceptable work in his 15 years of experience. Later, he said this is very good & walked off. I stayed & kept scraping stone & filling mortar until she said also, that it is fine as knew that's the best that could be done. She is a nice lady & I wanted to help as much as possible & I went beyond normal to correct the stone & mortar, etc. I kept telling her that if I knew she wanted it that smooth, I would have recommended tile or carpet as stone is natural & not always controllable...especially when Bexar & Comal counties were out all selections at that time. I "fired" Frank & haven't used him since- for walking off the job mad at "us picky" people. I have also never bought from that stone suplier & won't! I felt real bad but did best I could, & I even lost a LOT of time & money on that job. I hope she understands & wish the best for her & her family!

First met with Bob to discuss options and ideas for the project. He pointed out many options available. After price and decisions were made he ordered the materials and shortly afterwards his very pleasant workers came and did a wonderful job. Bob kept in touch and visited all throughtout the project. Since my project was small he was able to fit it inbetween a couple of larger projects he had. When the project was finished there was a small area that he noticed was too low, so he had his guys return and fix the dip in the surface. Bob is very easy to work with and has great ideas! Great work!

Description of Work: Called Bob to repair retaining walls and lay flagstone over large area in front of the house over a dirt and gravel area...front porch, steps and sidewalk. Overall we are very happy with the work done by Masonry Arts. Bob Abel & crew delivered what he said he would do as far as adding the stone foundation and came up with a great design for our outdoor grill that really opened up our backyard outdoor patio space. While Bob was very busy (he seems to always be running late but he will call you to let you know) he did a very detailed estimate of the work required and answered all my questions/concerns. His masonry crew did a great job matching the stone work done in the front of our house and finished the project on time. They also did a good job cleaning up the job site which I was very pleased to see.
Description of Work: We wanted to add a stone front to cover our home's concrete foundation and add a simple (just a grill + counter space) built in stone kitchen structure for our backyard patio.

Bob came out to examine the project and provide an estimate. He was late, but called me to adjust the time. It wasn't an issue as I was working on other items around the house. When Bob did arrive, he explained the complexities of working with the mortor. He was confident he could get the right match. He also looked at the piece from the fire box and said he could make the repair. We agreed to a price and he got started three days later. I was in no hurry and allowed him to pick the best time. Once he got started he finished the job in one day. I reviewed everything with him and he explained how I could best cleanup the fire box with a specific type of spray paint. I truly appreciated his efforts. It has been a few days and I can't tell where the repairs were made. I wished I had take "before & after" pictures. He truly enjoys his craft and I will be contacting him again for other work. He has a book of other projects that is quite impressive.
Description of Work: My flagstone fireplace had cracks inside and outside. The matching outside wall across from the front door also had a few cracks. The firebox had a piece of mortor fall off just outside the box above the screen. I wasn't even sure what type of material.

Bob Abel came out to look over the work needed, and told us he would be able to do this after the roof work and flashing had been installed (in a day or so). He was recommended by our roofer and I did not get another estimate because of the time constraints for the project so I have nothing to compare it to. But he was knowledgeable about stucco and masonry, and appreciative of the need to complete the project (also part of window replacements). He was timely and professional, finishing the job in one day. The work looks good. I would definitely use him again.
Description of Work: Replaced stucco on exterior wall from roof line where new flashing had been installed, approx. 8 inches by 30 feet of stucco work to match white color.

5Stars. I needed brick replacement on a side on my house due to a plumbing repair. I needed someone to who could come over and make an estimate and estimate and start the work as soon as the plumbers were finished. I didn't want part of my home left exposed to the elements. Mr. Bob Abel of Masonry Arts is an Angie's List member who I called on the same day the plumbers were removing some bricks to fix my plumbing problem. I immediately spoke to Mr. Abel, told him my situation and then he asked me some questions about what kind and how many bricks were removed, the color of the motar. Then he said he'd call me back to get an idea if he can get a crew over. He called back immediately to say he'd have a crew over by the time the plumbers were finished, gave me an estimate which he lowered as he was reconsidering the work needed to be done. He also said he would personally come over to check on the situation and he did and on time. The work by Mr. Abel's crew was flawless. Professional people, meticulous people, I'm so relieved my home now looks like nothing was done. I would recommend Masonry Arts to anyone.
Description of Work: I needed masonry replacement on a side of my home due to a previous and immediate plumbing repair. I needed someone to come over, make an assessment and estimate of the work and start the repair as soon as the plumbers would be finished. Masonry Arts being an Angie's List member was chosen based on their rating. I immediately got a hold of the owner Mr. Bob Abel and told him my situation. He clearly understood the situation, came over as the plumbers were finishing up their work and told me he'd havve his crew over about an hour or so later. The work was completed by Masonry Arts and in a couple of days, you wouldn't even know their was a repair made.

Bob was very responsive to the estimate request and very flexible when it came to scheduling. They did an excellent job of matching the new mortar color with the existing mortar. Bob found a great match for the new bricks and did an artful job of faux finishing the new bricks to match the old ones.
Description of Work: Bob and one of his men patched and added a course of bricks to a low retaining wall along our 30ft concrete patio. They also replaced cracked mortar in a flagstone section of the patio and sealed all the cracks and holes in the mortar around our entire brick home (4 sides).

Bob responded immediately to my call. He came to the house and produced a bid and some suggestions to improve the appearance to a more modern form. Work was delayed because of weather, but he came on the day planned and supervised the entire project. Work site was clean, the mailbox looks great. He was accomodating and helpful. I did not price other vendors and it seems a bit high, but that could be unfair because I really don't know the costs involved... just surprised at the expense. Bob was professional, friendly, accomodating and did a good job. I would certainly use his services again and will call him if we have further masonry projects.

Bob is very communicative. He keeps you informed of when he'll be able to get to the job, and what he's doing when it's in progress. Based on the quality of the first job, I've given him the task of sealing the remaining cracks.
Description of Work: My driveway had developed a lot of cracks. Apparently when the house was built, something was done wrong either with the base preparation or the pour. You can even see where they apparently tried to patch it up to hide their mistakes. I got some concrete sealant from Home Depot and began sealing the cracks myself, but due to medical issues could not finish. I asked Bob to come out and take a look to see what he could do and how much it would cost. As a trial, he worked on cleaning up the areas I had done. He evened it out, and lightened it up to make it blend it better.

I first must say that I have nothing but rave kudos for the job that was completed. Bob Abel and his crew do exceptional work. My house was built in 1974 and Bob went to several places to ensure that the mailbox brick matched as close as possible to the the brick on my house. The end product was fabulous. They, also, went around my entire house mortar patching and repaired some outside framework going into the attic near the roof of the house. They sealed and insulated the area to ensure there is no possible entry for small animals. Bob Abel and his workers are very thorough, meticulous and honest. We were so pleased that we would like to use Masonary Arts for a future project.

Bob and his workers arrived on a Tuesday afternoon and began the excavating for the sidewalk and decking. The next couple of days workers would arrive around noon and work until about 6:30. Bob, the owner, and three workers worked about four hours doing the repairs. They did an excellent job matching the mortar color. They arrived later than planned, but Bob was really good about updating me on their ETA during the morning. He's very good about communicating before and during the job. He's very affable and easy to talk to.
Description of Work: The patio and little wall around our pool is made of limestone and mortar. The mortar had dissolved and chipped out in places, and we needed it fixed. We had a crack in the mortar in the exterior part of our fireplace that they filled in.
