J & S UPHOLSTERY

Let me say right now that Jerry is incredibly nice and was very considerate considering my 4-yr-old daughter was on a tear at the time he came to my home. Also, I will talk about how long it took to have him out, but he did explain that he is a pop shop and was backlogged with work. Still, the time it took should be considered when selecting a company. I called Jerry and after some back and forth phone calls (several weeks) he came by to do an estimate on re-upholstering a couple inherited rocking chairs. I am not familiar with the upholstery business and I misunderstood his estimate and thought I could have both chairs done for around $400-$450 and as it turned out later, that was the cost for one chair. When he came by to pick up the chairs a few weeks later luckily one of the chairs was buried too far in the garage so we only ended up having one done, since the cost for two would have been hard on us at that time. I picked my fabric from Jerry's samples. He also let me have the option of buying my own fabric, but I found a fabric and color that suited me in his samples. He took the chair and within a couple weeks, returned it to me. I did pay $125 down, and paid the rest on drop-off. The upholstery was done very well. I am very happy with the quality of the work regarding the upholstery, and it looks like I could have bought it in the store. However, the rocking chair was very old and I had asked Jerry if he could repair it as it sat very far back and the mechanics were rusty/off. I didn't notice any difference in the mechanism when he brought it back. I later did my own surgery on the hardware and found that the wood base was old, rotted and the screws were stripped, so Jerry hadn't replaced either that I could see. I bought a new wood base and re-drilled the holes and used new screws and the chair works much better now, but I do remember part of the estimate was for repairing the chair. In any case, I found the $400 charge to be high as did my husband who now won't let me get the other chair re-upholstered since we could purchase a brand new chair for that cost. I realize a personal business like this is not about cheap work, and I want to restate that the quality seemed very good on the upholstery. But for those of you who might not want to pay so much, you may want to look at someone else. I am going to indicate in the questionnaire that the price was the same as the estimate, the only problem was I didn't think the estimate was explained right to begin with, but I understand that may have been my error.

Couldn't be more pleased! This is the 3rd or 4th time I have used J&S with no problems for reupholstery. This is the first time I have used them for custom made items like the table runners, but I will use them again to make custom pillows, etc. The wait time seems reasonable to me as I realize it takes a while to complete other customer's work. Most of the time when I have work done to my house, I usually have a slight wait until the work can be started, so the wait time here wasn't a big deal to me. And the work was completed in a timely manner, again based on my experience with other contractors. The furniture looks brand new, and I saved a lot since I didn't have to buy new chairs for which I had gotten estimates. I read his other reviews here and really did not experience any of those issues (again, the wait time was expected and seemed reasonable to me based on my other waits for contractors). When I couldn't find any material that I liked in his book, he took me to the showroom where he orders material for, and I found TONS of other options (I will return to that store for all my fabric needs). All said and done, I couldn't be any happier with the job and I will of course use him again, and I feel fine recommending him to my friends.

We had a pair of old chairs that had been in the family some time and we wanted to save them. Jerry was nice on the phone, told me he'd be out within a week to do a quote. It was actually a couple months before he came out to do a quote. He quoted fabric and labor, but didn't write the entire cost on the receipt. I also asked if he could repair the rocking chair as it leaned far back and squeaked while rocking. He said he could and told me it would cost about $25 for the rocking device, and figured in the repair with his labor for the reupholstering. He came back 6 wks later, at which we decided to only do one chair as a trial (he did tell us it would be about 4-5 wks). The chair cost $450 when we thought, based on the receipt, it would be $250. He brought the chair back a week later. My husband was upset about the cost. The upholstery looked nice but we had to replace the rotted wood platform ourselves. Nice seams and fabric, but I would go for a less expensive option next time.

He came out promptly and gave me a quote on several pieces. They all seemed reasonable and he told me it would be about two weeks before he could get to mine. It took him over two months to get around to picking up one loveseat. I furnished the material for the project. The job was done quickly, about a week. I was very disappointed in the job. He had to take one of the cushions back because the cording was not attached properly. He did not press the fabric to remove some wrinkles on the skirt, when I asked him about it, he stated that's the way it came off the bolt. The seams are sloppy and look very unprofessional, the fabric gaps on the sides of the cushions and along the back. The entire loveseat looks like an amateur worked on it, not someone who claims to have worked on furniture for over 50 years. I would not allow him to take the other pieces that he quoted me on as this one was such a disaster.

Came out and gave me a price and told me it would be about 4 wks. until he could get to my work. He was very prompt & courteous. I said I understood and that was fine. Four weeks came and went and I called on the 5th week and he said he had a rush job he needed to do and would call me the next week. He never called and when I called him 2 weeks later, he said he had been out of town and would call me the first of the next week and let me know what day he would pick up my work. Never called. This happened 2 or 3 more times and he never contacted be. Then he got an answering machine and he does not return my calls. This was over a period of 3 months. He should have just told me up front if he was not interested in my job and let me just find someone else. Too bad because it sounded like he does good work. I'll never know as he never has called me back. In my message I asked him to at least let me know if he had no intention to do the work but he did not bother to call me.

The only suggestion I would have would be that they communicate better. Their response time is a little slow.

When I first contacted Jerry, he was very upfront about how long it would take him because of the volume of work he had. I am very glad I waited. He came when he said he would, was very professional and did a beautiful job. I could not believe the value and quality when I saw the finished products. Jerry had fabric samples but I wanted something specific so he even picked the fabric up for me at the store where it was ordered. I told him I was sorry I didn't have any additional pieces for him to do!

Fantastic job. Took a piece of furniture that had been sloppily reupholstered and turned it into virtually new condition. Extremely reasonable, personable and accommodating. I would use them again in a second and have already recommended them to several people.

As shown by the number of items I have had J&S Upholstery do, I am absolutely pleased and amazed at their work. They are very timely, professional, and above all nice people. I know that I can pretty much buy any piece of furniture second hand, at any cost, and just pick out the right material and they can make it look showroom quality! The quality of work is outstanding, and I would and have recommended them to anyone needing any sort of upholstery work. I used to work for an interior designer in another state, and I know what most people charge for these types of services, and you will not find a better price or better quality workmanship. The best part is that you will be more than happy with your new furniture and you will be so excited about the price, and the fact that you are dealing with such nice people.

Jerry and wife was very prompt and polite. They did wonderful upholstery work and replaced springs at a price that anyone could afford. They are highly recommended by everyone they do busines with.
