Have been using General Air for a few years now, at least 5. Mike was on time, as normal. Professional appearance, came in greeted everybody, including the dogs in his usual friendly manner. Went right to work, checked everything out in a most timely manner. I will renew my service contract with them in October, when they will perform the heating check up. Excellent service, highly recommend them.
Description of Work: This was the annual check up on the a/c, the fee was paid previously for two annual visits, so actually nothing was charged for the service today.

I had three problems with General Air Conditioning: 1. Outrageously high prices 2. Deceptive business practices 3. Insulting, hysterical tirades directed at me by the company's president (see attached!) From the beginning... I e-mailed General A/C, saying my air conditioner was not cooling, and that I thought there was a problem with the evaporator coil. Note that their Angie's List profile says they give "free estimates". To me, an "estimate" is where the mechanic examines your equipment, figures out what is wrong with it and what parts need to be replaced, and provides a written quote of how much it will cost to fix. I can not imagine under what circumstances General A/C would ever give anyone a free estimate. So the receptionist called and said we should be prepared to pay $59 for a technician to come out and diagnose what was wrong with our air conditioner. Tim Bruce, President of General Air Conditioning, showed up at our house. By the time he was done, he had conned my wife out of $422.74. He didn't even fix anything. All he did was tell us our evaporator coil was bad. He said he had to charge an extra $114.58 for a leak test, and an extra $179.16 to add refrigerant before doing a leak test. All this was just to figure out what was wrong and provide an estimate. Wouldn't you think that Tim Bruce, supposedly a competent professional mechanic and president of his company, would know ahead of time that he was going to do a leak test, and how much he was going to charge for it? I think so! I don't know much about the A/C business, but I sincerely assumed that leak tests were a very common procedure, especially when the customer says his A/C unit is failing to cool. Why couldn't he tell us over the phone it would cost us over $400 just to get an estimate? This is exactly the kind of trickery I hoped to avoid by using Angie's List. So how much would Tim Bruce charge to replace my coil? $905, just for labor. Luckily, the part was covered under warranty -- otherwise, I probably would have had to pay that much again for parts. The total job would come to $1,327.74, not including parts! Realizing she had been taken for a ride, my wife, enraged, called our bank to complain about being overcharged. Naturally, they opened up a dispute regarding the charge to her Visa card. My wife shopped around a little, and by the end of the day had found a licensed A/C mechanic who, for $400, would do the same job for which Tim Bruce asked $905. I called Tim Bruce and told him I was astonished at how high his prices were, and that he was wrong to charge us $422.74 for the leak test, since we were told over the phone that a diagnosis would only cost $59. After lengthy discussion, Mr. Bruce agreed to refund $363.74 if we could find another state-licensed mechanic who would do the job cheaper. I told him we had already found one. He said fax over his competitor's invoice after the work was completed, and he would refund us $363.74. It took a few weeks to receive the new coil, and for the other mechanic to install it. In the meantime, our bank reversed $363.74 of the charges to our Visa card. Time passed, we did not hear from Mr. Bruce, and I thought the issue settled. No. Our bank forwarded us a furious tirade penned by Tim Bruce, calling me a liar and a fraud for daring to complain about his ridiculously high prices and deceptive business practices. I wonder if he has the courage to look a man in the eye and say such words. Realizing I had failed to fax him the competitor's invoice he had requested, I hoped to appease him by finally doing so. No. Mr. Bruce responded with a very brief but polite e-mail saying my fax was illegible. That same evening, I replied by retransmitting the scanned document via e-mail. Still no good, because by then, he had fired off another seething harangue, this time mailed directly to me, saying my fax was illegible, once again calling me a liar, and offering to refund $129. He had the nerve to ask me to sign the bottom of his insulting rant. I would never affix my signature to such a diatribe. Now I am confident that he was able to read his competitor's invoice the second time I sent it; however, he did not reply. He apparently has an anger problem. I have not heard anything else from him, and I hope he did not have an aneurysm upon realizing he was outbid in the marketplace. Tim Bruce and I can no longer communicate like adults. His insulting and unprofessional tone blinds me to his point of view. Why doesn't he refund us $363.74 like he originally said he would? Is he so overcome with rage that he can't do the right thing? Or did he really mean to lie to me from the beginning? Do you like it when someone calls you a liar, Tim? It hurts, doesn't it? I don't like it either. A businessman does not demonize his customer for having a complaint. It will hurt your business. I have little hope that Tim Bruce cares enough about his reputation on Angie's List to get over his animosity and do the right thing. You can ignore my post if you want, Tim. But be aware that I am VERY DISSATISFIED. The feeling that my wife and I have been INSULTED and RIPPED OFF is eating away at my soul. What this means to you is that I will continue posting my complaints about you for a long time, and in whatever forums I can find. Now everyone, feel free to read what Tim Bruce thinks of me, in his own words. See the documents which are attached to this post. This is how Tim Bruce treats his CUSTOMER. I think you will find it entertaining. Outrageous prices. Deceptive business practices. Hysterical tirades. General Air Conditioning!
Description of Work: Inspected our A/C unit to determine why it was failing to cool.

Response from General Air Conditioning Inc
Angie’s List Members, this is not how we treat customers at General Air Conditioning, but rather how we handle falsely attempting to reverse a credit card charge – with full documentation. In this case a verbal agreement was in place to credit what the homeowner thought to be outrageous pricing; provide me with an invoice of someone who would do the work for $400 and I would refund all but the original trip charge. Instead of doing so, he informed his credit card company that he “did not recognize the charge” causing a chargeback to our account. Full documentation (the letter to Merchant Services) was provided and the chargeback was reversed in our favor. The homeowner eventually provided to me documentation showing he paid substantially more than $400 for the work and the proper permit for the work was not pulled; less regulation can me a lower price for the end user. In any case, our pricing in the fair market place was right in line so the homeowner’s, statement something along the lines of: “feeling the sting of losing in the competitive marketplace” really is incorrect. Our verbal agreement was void as soon as the false claim to the credit card company was submitted. The homeowner was offered a full refund of the maintenance agreement price, since we will not be performing the maintenance, pending a signed authorization. As of May 24, 2011, he has not accepted it. Tim Bruce

Excellent. They began when they said they would and worked from 9:00am to 10.00pm on the first day and finished first thing in the morning the next day, just before our christmas guests arrived. I called them for a price to replace our furnace, it bit the dust. Our a/c was ok, but they explained the rebate programs available to me if both a/c and furnace were replaced, the final cost was the same as replacing the furnace only( there were no rebates for furnace only). The new system was explained thoroughly by the install technician and then by the project manager at the final walk through. They were very neat and clean and their work was professional. The system came with a years maintenance and a years worth of filters. Great job! after rebates the final cost will be just under $4000.00, and lower utility bills.

The technician, Mike, seemed very nice and showed up on time. The A/C has been functioning fine. Never had any problems with it, and has always kept the house cool. After performing Annual Maintenance Check, Mike told me that system was running a little low on freon but was otherwise running fine, and that company charges flat fee of $170.00 to add freon, regardless of how much needed to be added. When asked how much freon was to be added, Mike told me that he didn't know and wouldn't give me an estimate. Called another A/C company to find out if $170 was reasonable, and was told that if the machine was still blowing cold air (which mine was), $170.00 was way to high (i.e., I should be charged by the pound). Called the main office to question the $170 charge without knowing how much freon was needed. I was told by the man on the phone that "this is just the way we do it," and he said that my system should have been checked for leaks. When I questioned Mike about checking for leaks, he indicated that the company would charge me an addititional $125.00 to check for leaks. The whole transaction seemed a bit strange to me. I won't use the company again.

Response from General Air Conditioning Inc
I am sorry you were unhappy with our service and I wish it didn’t end up like this. To clarify, General Air Conditioning Inc did not perform any work for the member listed above, however, we did perform work for someone with the same last name who’s address is different from the one in the complaint. General Air was called this other person's home to perform our annual maintenance, a $149 cost, $20 less for Angie’s List members. Although the air conditioning system was operating, my technician discovered it to be low on refrigerant. Our technicians are instructed to get approval for any additional work before doing so, including adding refrigerant. When adding refrigerant we ask the customer to agree, in writing, to the following: “If an air conditioning system requires refrigerant, it is the policy of General Air Conditioning Inc. to recommend a leak test and to have all leaks repaired on the system. If you choose to only have the refrigerant added without a leak test and without repairing the leak, we want you to be aware of the following: Your system will lose capacity as the refrigerant continues to leak out. Your system will lose efficiency as the refrigerant continues to leak out. General Air Conditioning Inc will not credit the cost of refrigerant from future repairs. The EPA has determined that refrigerants are damaging to the ozone layer.” At this point our customer, although unhappy about the price, declined the leak search but agreed to proceed with adding refrigerant. She also threatened to write a bad review on Angie’s List. I did not realize that some customers would try to use Angie’s List as a tool to lower the price for a service. When she called questioning our prices, I failed to stop the transaction right there and tell my technician to leave her system “as-is” - not properly charging the system with refrigerant. If my technician did not charge her system, it would have only been a matter of time before she would have called back to let me know her system was not cooling anymore, most likely leaving the customer to question if we did our job properly. In a correspondence with our customer later in the day, I explained our pricing and to be leery of anyone who is offering refrigerant by the pound since the accuracy and calibration of their scale may be in question. Overall Angie’s List customers have been more than happy with our service and upfront pricing as indicated by numerous positive reviews. I would like to leave the door open for this customer to reconsider her treatment from General Air Conditioning Inc as fair and consistent as the rest of our many satisfied customers. Tim Bruce President General Air Conditioning Inc.

I called Tim around 10am on a Sunday, he had somebody at my house by 2:15pm. He did not charge extra because it was a weekend nor did he charge extra to drive out to Timberwood Park. What I loved about David was that he explained in detail everything he was doing and why. We asked at least 30 questions and he was patient and answered all of our questions thoroughly. They are honest and very knowledgeable. We will be using them to replace our entire system for the fact that they are honest. You don't find companies that care about you like this anymore. I really felt like I was important to them as a customer. They did not make the repair needed only because my husband wanted to try and fix this himself. (I am sure we will need to call them back as my husband has no experience with AC repair.) If you want a good, reliable job done this is the company to call. Like I said, their honesty is what makes them unique. I will be recommending them to all my friends and family that need AC repair. Thank You General Air Conditioning! Keep doing a great job!

On December 4, 2009, my heater stopped working. As this was the coldest day of the year and we set a record for a cold temperature, my house was quite cold by Saturday morning. I called General Air at 8:00 a.m. Someone was at my house by 9:00 a.m. As I have used General Air in the past and pay in advance for a service call in the spring and fall, I did not have to pay for the service at all. My heater was fixed and up and running within about 20 minutes. General Air was prompt and courteous.

The overall experience was very positive. I will use this company in the future.
Description of Work: In the middle of the night I had a leak coming down through my ceiling from the a/c unit up in the attic. I called General Air first thing in the morning and they scheduled a service call for late afternoon of the same day. They had a cancellation several hours before my scheduled appointment and called me to see if I wanted them to come early. Mike came out and did a thorough inspection of my very old system. Although he did acknowledge that my system is quite old and in need of replacement, which I already knew, he did not try to pressure me into a new system. It turns out several of the lines in the system were blocked. Mike pointed out that it would be cheaper for him to perform an entire maintenance on the system which would include unclogging the lines that had caused the leak than it would be if he just charged for the trip charge and cleaning out the lines So he did more and charged less. He was also very good about my using the coupon I got here on Angie's list. Mike was very professional and answered all of my questions about a replacement system and cps and federal tax rebates available for a new system.

We created a master closet by extending into one of the other rooms. The current A/C vent was now in the closet and needed to be diverted into the room. Victoria (Vic) quickly assessed the situation and had a solution for us. In the kitchen, we changed some walls around and this required the current vents to be moved. Both jobs required the use of "old style" box ducting. Both items were completed within hours on the same day. Thanks, Vic and the General A/C team.

We called Tim to take a look at our A/C unit which had stopped pumping out cold air. Tim immediately diagnosed the problem and offered solutions to us to get the unit up and running correctly. He also performed a full maintenance and service on the unit. When I saw him remove the casing off the outside unit and clean each coil with a hose, I knew that we had the right guy. The A/C company that I had been using in the past never removed the cover once in the last 6 years. So now the build up of leaves is gone. The unit has been up and running like a champ since.
Description of Work: Full maintenance check and agreement for 1 year service. Added freon to the unit. Replaced electronic part.
