Fence Doktor/Affordable Professional Landscapes

This company is the worst in the city I had to take the owner Steve to Bexar County precinct 2 case #21s2100412 and sue him for $2900 for bad cement work quality and service. He hires individuals off the streets they don't know what they're doing and he does not supervise them. The fence work Was just as terrible and appropriate placement of the hinges on even Pickett's fence fell apart within one year. I strongly encourage not to use him his tactics and his work quality is Is terrible. Is notice no new reviews in years???

The company did a great job on this service and did it in a timely manner. The service was a little pricey, but I did pay it because I knew it was a great company.

Overall experience was great. You have my recomendation to hire these guys!!

Steve set up 2 appointments to finalize the estimate and missed both appointments. He called the next day (8/15/12) after the first "no show" and gave a lame excuse. We set another meeting for today at 9:30am. He said he'd call before coming. He did not call or show up. I rate him as a "F" overall. He did give an estimate over the phone and it was reasonable. He hasn't contacted me as of 9/29/12,

The retaining wall is as stable as an army tank. The fencing was well done; the support posts are sturdy and the gates work flawlessly.

Went great overall-price, responsiveness, quality of work, and friendliness.

Asked Steve to come out for estimate to replace two sections of wooden fence and the gate. He arrived over an hour late and did not call to say he would be late. We agreed on the work to be done. Which included his opinion that I needed to replace the post on one side of the gate but all of the other old posts were ok. (I have that in writing) Work was performed as promised and appeared to be ok. Less than one month later the gate was warped on the latch side with the top of the gate hanging behind the fence about 4 inches and the bottom of the gate about four inches in front of the fence. I called Steve to come out and look at it. He said he would come that day but did not come until the next day when I was not at home. I called him and he said that one of the old posts had moved due to recent rains and it would cost me an additional $100.00 to get it repaired. He claimed there was nothing wrong with the gate itself or the work they had previously done. I doubted that was the reason. The old posts have been there for 30 years and they have never moved or leaned. I just wanted my gate fixed so instead of arguing, I told him to go ahead and fix it. He said he would be out the next day (Saturday) or early the next week to fix it. He never showed up. In the meantime I went out and tried as hard as I could to make the old post move and I couldn't. My conclusion is that his crew built me a lousy gate and rather that make it right he wanted me to hand over some more money. I never called him back. My gate is still warped. I will never, never hire him again. And I would definitely not recommend him.

They did an amazingly quick job to satisfy my backyard access needs. In doing so they left a few areas without finishing touches that they came back and took care of during the following two weeks. Quality was very good and so was the attitude. I would not hesitate to use Steve again.

They built the fence. They just didn't bother to comply with the law.

Called to see about getting a quote to have our existing fence extended and to have some railing put around our patio. Steve said that he would be happy to come out the next day at 1:pm. The following day at 1:10 he calls to say that he will be late by an hour and a half. Which is a ridiculous amount of time to be late by and to be calling after the appt time had passed was rude also. But I had already taken the time out of my day to be there so I said that would be fine. He never showed up or called there after. This is incredibly unprofessional and completely wasted my time. If he was too busy then perhaps he should have never committed to the appt time in the first place.

I highly recommend this company for any of you fencing needs. Steve Wahl's professionalism and care ensured the success of this project. His recommendations kept us within budget and guaranteed the highest quality of work.

Tis company was very busy so it took about 2 weeks for them to schedule my job. But once they did, they were there exactly as promised. They used a saws-all for the demo. Went really fast. They were pretty neat and kept their area clear. They re-used several of my old 4x4 posts (which I previously agreed to). They added 2 new 4x4 posts to accomodate the new gate they built for me. They were very careful digging and did not hit the sprinkler system. They quick-creeted the posts and went to lunch. After lunch, when the posts were set enough to work on, they finished the job. This was important to me because I have a pool and did not want the fence down overnight. They used galvanized nails hammered by hand. Each board was checked for length and vertically alligned. New gate, is just the right width and is framed properly, so that it doesn't sag in the future. Refurbished hardware is fine. Good people on the job site. I'm very pleased.

The project was delayed by bad weather, but as soon as it stopped raining, Steve Wahl's crew got the job done. It was a pleasant experience from start to finish. Steve came over to look at the backyard, made suggestions and gave me an estimate. I had a drawing of everything I wanted done, and Steve made it happen. He has a wonderful crew. Everybody worked hard, but Alex, the guy who laid the flagstone, has to be mentioned here. He did a beautiful job. All the work was done within a week, and I am enjoying my improved backyard.

The owner's estimate strategy seemed to be start out very high and if the potential customer balks then reduce the price to one that is still high, but makes the sustomer feel like he/she is getting a good bargain. The project was relatively simple with not that much in the way of materials but was originally quoted at $700, the main reason stated that this was a "small" project and that no one else would likely take it. When the two workers arrived I explained that I just wanted to ensure no part of the fence would be on the neighbors' property, and received a gruff response from one about how many years he has been doing this. The fence was straight and looked OK, but I found areas normally nailed having no nails and a number of other nails splitting boards due to poor placement or angle of the nails. One brace was cut too short and one of the vertical privacy boards had 2 one-inch saw cuts at the top of it. I wasn't expecting perfection but I thought the quality of work could have been better, especially considering all the worker "experience."

High quality work at the lowest prices. Very punctual, fixed minor problems after the job, very professional. About 10% less expensive than competitive bids. Recommended to two neighbors who also had fences built.

We had some problems but he came back and fixed everything. I would recommend them. I thought the price was a little bit high.

The sod in our backyard was destroyed by a combination of the drought, rain, and our two dogs. We called Steve Wahl from Affordable Professional Landscapes / the Fence Doktor for a quote. Steve was the first quote we got, so we called around and got several more. All the quotes were very similar. However, I was much more comfortable with Steve's knowledge, experience, and professionalism. Steve listened to what we wanted in our yard and provided great ideas to fulfill our wishes. He noticed that certain areas on our yard were not draining properly, so that water pooled when we got heavy rains. He suggested that we re-grade the yard. He also showed us areas where there was no hope of grass growing because of the amount of shade that we received. In those areas, he suggested rocks. He also suggested that we try a different type of sod than the existing St. Augustine because it would hold up better to the dogs. He quoted us for three yards of rocks and several pallets of grass. In the end, we had his company lay zoysia grass (more dog and drought tolerant) and put down about six yards of rocks. The amount of rocks increased because we liked it so much that we asked for it to be put in other areas we had not previously thought about. Although Steve used two more pallets of sod than planned, he did not charge us for the extra sod. He charged us what he estimated plus the additional rocks (which, again, were an add-on that we requested). They just finished today, and the yard looks great. Steve is a pleasure to work with, and his crew was fantastic. Each of his guys was knowledgeable, hard-working, and always willing to discuss what they were doing and make any modifications we requested. I spent summers working on landscaping crews when I was in college. These guys know what they're doing and they do a good job. If I have any work done in the future, they will be my first call.

This company excelled in professionalism, punctuality, and courtesy. We are extremely happy with our finished product and would use this company again without any hesitation.

Overall, met expectations. One issue came up. When they replaced the gate on the fence, they put the lock on the outside inside of the inside like the original. I was monitoring the project, but didn't catch the problem until the work was done. I recommend that you be very specific about what will be done if you use this contractor, otherwise they may make changes.

I live out of state but own the property in San Antonio for which I hired the Fence Doktor. When I first called the Fence Doktor, I specifically did not mention Angie's List to ensure an honest estimate before requesting the advertised 10% discount. When I did not hear back by the end of the day when the estimate was to be performed, I called and was told I would hear something later that evening or the next morning. I called back mid-morning the next day and left a message and was called back a short while later. I was given a verbal estimate for repair vs replacement of the gates. After thinking it over for a few days, I emailed the Fence Doktor through Angie's List to request written confirmation of the estimate. They responded with a phone call, and when I inquired about the 10% discount I was told it was already deducted in the estimate I was given. When I pointed out that until I sent that email, I never mentioned Angie's List I was told that most of his business comes from Angie's List he automatically takes of the 10%. I questioned this and he then gave me 5% off the estimate. Since I live out of town and cannot inspect the work myself, I asked if he would be willing to send before and after pics if I hired him. He agreed and I hired him to repair the gates. He said his office would email me the contract so that I could provide payment info before scheduling the work. I had to contact him a few days later for the contract when I still had not received anything. He was unable to do the work on the day scheduled due to weather, but called to let me know. No problem. He then completed the work the next day. I did not hear anything however, so the following week I emailed him to ask about the pictures. When I didn't hear back, I called him. He said he forgot to take the after pics, but would go back and do so and send them within a few days. It's been more than a week since that conversation I have not received them. I confirmed with the tenant in the house that the work was done and seems satisfactory, but I otherwise cannot comment on the quality of work. Service was friendly, but I felt like they weren't eager for my business given the number of times I had to contact them to follow through - for the estimate, for the contract, and for the pics which I never received. Assuming the quality of the work is good, I would consider hiring them again but I would shop around a little more first.

THE JOB WAS STARTED AND COMPLETED IN ONE DAY, AS PROMISED

Steve called to alert us when the crew was coming,as we had requested.They worked hard, used quality materials, and completed the job in a timely manner.Steve came when they had finished the job we had agreed upon. At that time, I was so satisfied with the work done, I requested an addional area of old chainlink fence to be replaced with cedar fencing. He gave me a quote on the new area and said they would complete the new job the next day. That was yesterday, and today it is raining, so they are delayed by the rain. However, considering his past work, am expecting an excellent completion when the rain stops. Good work, on time, quality materials,and fair price.

Mr, Wahl, working with one assistant, I believe, was able to complete the job at the arranged time. We did not have to be home for them to do the work. Mr. Wahl called me when the job was complete, asked us to inpsect it, and then trusted us to drop off the balance of the payment owed. We had asked Mr. Wahl to replace the wooden basket-weave fence with wooden upright fencing. That part of the yard has a slope, so we were concerned about the fence being even all across, but the work was completed beautifully. Good material was used, and the quality of the work exceeded our expectations. When we need fence repair, or when we decide to replace the rest of the fence, we will defintely call Fence Doktor. Mr. Wahl also does landscape work, and I would call him for that service too.

Steve and I talked about what my daughter and I wanted to do. He came to our house and then sat down with us and went over all the ideas we had. Steve is amazing. His creativity is like none I've ever seen before. My daughter said nothing in nature is straight and Steve made sure this applied. The crew came within a week and started the work. They were all very friendly and personable. They each had their specialty on the crew and all went smoothly. They had to tear up all the sod in the front yard, put down weed block and put down the riverrock. It looks fantastic. As the crew was working, Steve would make suggestions on what else could be done. As I have no artistic talent at all, this was very appreciated. It also made more work for the crew and not one complaint was heard from any of them. The retaining wall took alot of digging and dumping. Alex was great on building the wall and our rounded steps. They built us a beautiful pathway from the deck to the retaining wall filled with stepping stones and riverrock. The clotheslines are well placed and have gardens at each end. We have 2 very large flower gardens in the upper yard, one that is permanent and one for us to play in with seasonal flowers year round. The deck is perfect for what we wanted and they extended it to fit the yard. The one end is 12 by 24 and the other end is 15 by 24 so it looks perfect. Our yard was not square. The front part of this yard we have set up as a dog washing station with stepping stones as well. The two front fences were also replace with new as we are planning on redoing the outside of our house. This again was Steve's suggestion and it made all the difference in the looks of our home. My daughter and I are very satisfied and love being on our deck everyday. The yard is perfect for our dogs and with all the birds that now visit us, we can enjoy what was once an eyesore. I know I have probably forgotten to mention something as there was alot of work that was done. Thank you Steve, Alex, Danny, Joe, Larry and Greg. Job well done.
