This project was contracted by Mr. Jorge Vela (dba Euro Design and Progressive Construction) Work started in December 2010 and ended in June 2011. Several portions of the project had to be done several times with the end result still far from perfect. Within 6 months the grout between the shower floor and the wall started developing significant cracks. In October 2012 mold was noticed on a wall immediately adjacent to the shower. The drywall was cut out and the wall extending behind the shower was soaked. The water lines to the shower were pressurized for two weeks to determine if the leak was from a water line or the shower pan. The soaked walls began to dry out suggesting it was a shower pan problem. Mr. Vela was contacted and he inspected the shower. His first solution was to silicone around the shower floor to seal the cracks in the grout. His second suggestion was to tear out an outside wall (the shower was in a corner of the house backing onto two outside walls) to access the shower wall to identify the source of the leak. When I refused to let him do that he stated that his warranty was only for three months and if I paid $2000 he would fix the problem. I opted to use another contractor who found several problems: two of the shower walls had completely water-logged sheet rock, the shower pan had been installed incorrectly, green sheet rock was used for the walls without any waterproofing layer, and where the shower had been extended the surface under the tiles was the original wallpaper. The entire shower enclosure had to be torn out and rebuilt, and re-tiled. In addition, the toilet had been installed incorrectly and had been leaking for some time. The toilet required replacement. I called Mr. Vela with this information and asked him to partially offset the cost of the repair work. He refused saying that his warranty was only for three months and he had offered to fix the problem for $2000 (although he did not know what it was at that time). The individuals that Mr. Vela used for this project were very poorly skilled workers. Mr. Vela brought in other workers to fix the drainage of the shower floor but they were unable to prevent water from pooling in two corners. Mr. Vela was unable to do a bathroom renovation or correct the mistakes that his workers made. I had lost confidence in his ability or skill to identify let alone fix the problem.
