Dale poured our foundation in April 2013 and we moved into our beautiful, new 5,200+ square foot home in November of that year. Amazing, considering other builders quoted us anywhere from one to two years for the type of custom home we were going to build! Overall it was a very pleasurable experience. No project this size is without issues or questions that arise, but Dale not only raised some of those questions, he helped come up with solutions, and went the extra mile in solving them. Throughout the process, we were impressed with the way he listened to what we wanted, was innovative in his execution, managed and scheduled his sub contractors with Swiss watch precision, and always looked for things he could add to the plan to give us more value. Even after months of living in the house, he has been extremely responsive in coordinating subs to come back (at no charge to us) to correct little things we have found, whether it was light bulbs that needed replacing, an appliance that was making a noise, a fan that needed balancing, etc. We are now part of that crowd that attends his open houses to tell potential clients, "If we ever build again - Dale will do it, no question!"
Description of Work: He built our custom home. Our first encounter with Dale Sauer Homes was during the 2008 San Antonio Parade of Homes and we were immediately impressed by the fact that the people directing the crowds from room to room were people Dale had built homes for in the past. We liked a lot of the features in that Parade home, so later that year as we worked with an architect on house plans, we included Dale when we asked for preliminary bids from five San Antonio builders. I assumed Dale, as the Parade of Homes builder in that group, would come in the highest, but the exact opposite was true! Then the economy took a nosedive and we postponed our plans to build until we could sell our ranch (not easy during the devastating drought), which did not occur until late 2012. All during those intervening years, two things happened that impressed us about Dale: he continued to build the relationship with us and he invited us to the Open House of each new home he finished, where we continued to meet the people he had built previous homes for - and they all said the same thing: "If we ever build again - Dale will do it, no question." As someone who had experienced building a new home in 1996 with another builder, we found that type of statement to be almost unbelievable.

Description of Work: Built our timber frame home for us. Dale was great to work with - professional, reliable, honest. He took great care of us and our new home. The best thing is that if I call him still today, he will answer any of my calls & help us out even though we are beyond our warranties.

I also was so happy to hear when Mr. Sauer was voted Most prestigious Builder of the Year by his Peers in 2009. He well deserves these awards.I know that he has a legion of satisfied customers and return customers! Several of them he is building a home for a second and even third time. Each of his Clients are included in and invited to his New Home Open Houses. It affords his past customers an idea of the latest and greatest newest products and designs being offered in today's home building markets. Hence, he often helps past satisfied customers start over on their next Dream Home project. Dale participates in the Parade of Homes every year and has sold several of his Spec homes before the Parade is officially open, or before the Parade is over. Which is every Home Builder's goal during the Parade. When my husband and I decide to build again in the Future, you can be sure Dale Sauer Homes, will be the first Builder we call to start the planning and execution of our new home. A very Satisfied Customer Kathy Sowell
Description of Work: Dale Sauer and his excellent team at Dale Sauer Homes, made our dreams come true. We had planned for years to build our own custom home in the Texas Hill Country on our property there. We found alot of builders were not even interested in building that far from San Antonio. Dale was not a bit troubled about the distance, and did an amazing job. He has a "Hands On" philosophy and was there in person for all the major steps of building. From our first meeting where we showed Dale our drawing of our 'Floor Plan" on a piece of napkin, to the amazing finished product, he made our dream home a reality. Dale not only made our plans better with his amazing staff, but honored the overall look and design we hoped to achieve. Dale has had many referalls and happy customers after they are shown this beautiful home, with it's Master workmanship, design and decor. He sent us to amazing designers, and his wife Debbie also helped in our selections, we were able to achieve, thanks to his knowledge of where to go ,and to who were specialist in their fields. Beside all Dales'attention to detail, he was also very interested in the small details, such as individual costs of different items, to keep us in line of the building budget, and under cost. We did not have to execute any 'change orders", thanks to his working with us so closely with a sharpened pencil all the way. Anyone who had built a home before, knows that traditionally once you 'upgrade' or ask for something better or more expensive or make a change on design or style, you do a Change order. That I can assure you usually means more $$$$ not on original contract and cost amount. As I have been a Realtor for over 30 years I have seen building costs skyrocket due to a builders oversight etc.

Dale went above and beyond from the first time I spoke with him. Was willing to walk the lot, introduce me to an architect, talk plans and specs - all before I ever signed a contract or any money changed hands. The home was completed on time and on budget. Dale was available and on the job site every single day. Couldn't have ask for a better experience.

After a DEVESTATING home fire my wife and I decided that it was time to build our dream home. We found a lot that SAUER owned and approched him to buy it. He was extremely friendly and said he would give us a $20k discount if we choose him to build our home. We had no design so he hooked us up with a local architect. After a meeting of 3 hours describing our desires in the home we expected to see a basic prelim design in a week, two and a half weeks later we got the crappiest basic design from him i have ever seen. I then set out to find a "real" designer. This did not set well with Dale, but it is my home so I pressed on. After getting a design from a professional we started a bit backwards. I wanted to get a real good bid quote on the total cost of the home with real selections instead of "allowances" that would never cover the real cost of our selections. This took at least two months to do. Durring this process I realize the area I will be building in requires zero permits and has zero code compliance from the city. In order to protect myself I told SAUER that I will be utilizing our architect through out the process for code compliance and design integrity scrutiny. At this time he spoke nothing of having any issue with this to me. Fast forward to the 11th hour and the bid comes in ok, we are ready to sign the contract when he tell my architect he will not allow him to be a part of the building process! I called SAUER up and told him that since I will be funding a $1 million dollar home by myself I need a MINIMUM level of protection due to the nature of the area we are building in (code/permits issues). I suggested that we all get together and discuss the level of involvement of my architect at which time he states "NO- I will not meet with you and I will never work with (architect) again, he has burned his bridge with me!" I replied that if this is his level of professionalism and the way he resolves disputes especially in the "honeymoon" phase of building that I will not use him, to which he replies "I am not making enough money on this job, I need to ask my wife if she thinks we should do this" I never heard back from him the next two weeks after many attempts to call/text/email him and his wife Debbie. What I wanted back from him was the plans to my home which cost me $15,000.00 to have drawn back! Ultimately I had to resort to calling an attny. and threaten him that if he attempted to used my plans I will sue him... He never returned them to me! After the fact we did some serious research on this character. Turns out he is a HOTHEAD, and if you disagree at all with him you have a problem! Also it turns out Mr. SAUER is in the regular habit of not paying his subcontrators the agreed amount or in the case of my new decorator (she did a parade home with him) not paying at all!!! She had to file a lien on him while at the same time attending the parade home under the same roof as he...AKWARD! It also came to light when i was looking for another piece of land and dealing with the land developers that is name is not in good standing with them as well. The bottom line is that Dale SAUER builds 400k-500k homes. a 1million plus home is out of his level of comfort and if you are looking for a "real" custom builder you need to look further than Dale Sauer. If you are happy with a builder that will do it his way or the high-way Dale is you guy, if your the type of person that wants a custom home and you have your own ideas..move on! This Debacle ended up costing me 4 months lost time on our build process and since we only had one year of insurance costs covered for our rental it will end up costing me over $50k for this lost time. My advice is choose very carefully, have an attny look at the contract these builder expect you to sign and understand TEXAS is the wild west of home building with ZERO oversite by ANY govermental agency and little recourse when you are shafted by one!!! feel free to contact me at moldowan at aol dot com if you need more specific info on this clown who calls himself a custom builder By the way in his rebuttle Dale has listed that he won 8 out of 12 awards for parade homes... BUT every builder comes home with at last one or multiple awards at EVERY parade event.. just another example of the deceit you can expect from them. *update* 1-27-14 He has built a home in cordillera ranch, although a simpler home with not too much fancy finish out he did complete it in Half the time of the other builders out here. which is impressive.
Description of Work: Dale Sauer homes was to build a custom 6200 sq ft. home for me in San Antonio. The process to contract was almost complete and all the leg work that needs to be done on a home was complete then at the 11th hour Mr. Sauer pulled a fast one by refusing to work with my Architect, Stating that his agenda was to "tell me how to build a home" After i spent 3 months of work pre-selecting items and ultimately costing me tens of thousands of dollars in wasted time and rent.

Response from Dale Sauer Homes
Over the course of several meetings, and several months spent with (deleted member name), it became apparent to me that we were not a good fit for one another. I received a report from one of my suppliers, with whom he had interacted, that confirmed my concerns. As a consequence, we declined to contract with him. We mean him no ill will and wish he and his family the best of luck. I have been building homes for 20 years. In 2009, we received the distinguished Single Family Builder of the Year award. In the most recent Parade of Homes sponsored by the Greater San Antonio Builders Association, our custom home received 8 of the 12 possible awards, including the President’s Award.
