GREAT!!!! Called after receiving a high quote from another co. They quoted a new installed Carrier furnace at a reasonable price and did such a good job overall that we called them back to replace our other furnace (which was working fine, but old). They handled everything very professionally and even sent us a thank you note and gift after jobs were completed. Based on our great experience, I give them a strong positive reference.

I recommend Cand J to everyone I know. From the first call that I made to their office through to the completion of the job, their employees were professional, timely, and knowledgable. They were able to install the system within a couple days of my call and installed it in one day. I have had no trouble with the unit since it's installation and their pricing was fair for this new system. I am one satisfied customer!

Cand J sold me a low quality unit in 2008 that would not have been permitted to be installed a year later. This unit uses a coolant (R22) they knew would be phased out and become much more expensive instead of recommending one with R410. Cand J sold me a unit in Dec 2008 even though less than a month later in 2009 I could have had substantial savings had I purchased a new system. The owner never said a word. Cand J never fixed the leaks at the outside valves which leaked Freon in 2010 and is leaking Freon in 2012. Instead they used putty to try to seal the valves!!! They have lied to me by omission of key facts and negligent service even though I know the owner personally and have had a service contract with them for at least 10 years. I will never use them again. They will only take advantage of you. I now have a ticking time bomb heat pump that is leaking Freon because it was never fixed correctly.
Description of Work: In December 2008, C&J replaced my interior heat pump unit with a 3 ton, fan/coil Payne unit that uses Freon or R22 coolant. I paid $2450 for this work. At the time I was told that the evaporator coil had rust and should be replaced. I was also told that this unit was the best choice because it was compatible with the still functioning outside unit so I could save the cost of replacing the entire system. No other options were presented to me at that time. I now know that that the production and import of R-22 is decreasing every year between now and 2015 and that it will be phased out in 2020. I understand that this was known approximately 12 years ago. I also learned that new split systems using R-22 could not be installed after January 1, 2010. Finally, I found out that Payne units are the lowest quality of heat pumps manufactured by Carrier. My original unit installed when my home was build was a Carrier. Based on this information, I now know that the Payne unit C&J installed was a bad choice. In addition I discovered that starting in 2009 (less than a month after my unit was installed) that the Residential Energy Property Credit (Section 1121) increased the energy tax credit for homeowners who made energy efficient improvements to their existing homes. When asked about any rebates or incentives, I was told that there was nothing available in 2008. C & J never mentioned any upcoming incentives that would benefit me. On June 28, 2010, the system didn’t cool. The technician found leaks at the caps on the outside condensing unit. The invoice states that 2 pounds of R 22 was added, the caps were tightened, and the system was started & tested. This cost $190. Recently, HAVC technicians pointed out that Freon is leaking from those valves. They showed me where putty had been applied to both caps (2010 service) in an attempt to seal them and to prevent the Freon from leaking. C&J never told me that there were any issues with the outside unit. On April 3, 2012, C&J did a precision tune-up & check to my AC unit . The technician stated that the unit is working properly. No problems. On May 16, 2012, the system didn’t cool. A C&J technician came the next day and stated that the system was almost empty of R22. He also said that that he found trace of R22 all over the copper coil. He said he added 8 pounds to my system. However, the unit only has a capacity of 6.38 & I never authorized adding coolant on this date (the tech talked to my son who was home). Later I spoke to Randy Collar, the owner of C&J. He told me that the coil needed to be replaced. It would cost me $792. I was shocked since the unit is only 3.5 years old. In the meantime, I have had several HVAC technicians inspect both the inside and outside units. None of them detected leaks at the inside coil. However, they showed me where Freon is leaking from both outside valves. I saw the old putty on the caps, I smelled the Freon, and I saw the oil coating the valves that indicates a Freon leak. I now know that both valves need to be replaced to stop the leaking Freon. This will cost me $800-900. This solution still leaves me with an outdated system that uses R22.However, I will probably need to have a new heat pump installed, it will cost me at least $6500 for a bottom of the line unit. This is in addition to the $2450 I spent in December 2008 to have C&J replace the inside unit. AVOID THIS company. They RIP people OFF!!!

Response from C & J Air Conditioning & Heating Co
We show service history with this customer in our current computer system dating back to 1995. We did replace her interior fan/coil In December 2008 with a Payne unit. Her outdoor unit at the time was approximately 10 years old. It is our normal business practice to offer several equipment options to our customers in these situations. Payne is a Carrier product and comes with the same manufacturer warranty as the equipment tagged with the Carrier label. Some 3 1/2 years later (May 2012) the coil within this unit started leaking refrigerant. Leaking coils were a problem across all manufacturer lines during this time frame. As a service contractor, there is nothing we could have done to prevent this leak. We did provide a quote to replace this component under the manufacturer's limited parts warranty. Customer originally agreed to this and then later decided not to go forward. The customer has a laundry list of complaints that we did our best to address as follows: * Customer Complaint -Starting in 2009 (less than a month after my unit was installed) that the Residential Energy Property Credit (Section 1121) increased the energy tax credit for homeowners who made energy efficient improvements to their existing homes. When asked about any rebates or incentives, I was told that there was nothing available in 2008. C & J never mentioned any upcoming incentives that would benefit me. Our answer - Our Answer - Yes, we did not advise her of this incentive because it was not in effect at the time of her replacement. In addition, very few system qualified for these incentives until later in 2009. * Customer Complaint -.On June 28, 2010, the system didn’t cool. The technician found leaks at the caps on the outside condensing unit. Our Answer - This leak was related to the service valves associated with the original equipment installation that we did not perform. These leaks were corrected by tightening the caps. * Customer Complaint - On April 3, 2012, C&J did a precision tune-up & check to my AC unit . The technician stated that the unit is working properly. No problems. On May 16, 2012, the system didn’t cool. A C&J technician came the next day and stated that the system was almost empty of R22. He also said that that he found trace of R22 all over the copper coil. Our Answer - Leaks can occur at anytime and cannot be predicted. Unit was cooling before the leak. * Customer Complaint - He said he added 8 pounds to my system. However, the unit only has a capacity of 6.38. Our Answer - Total refrigerant charge for a system is comprised of the amount the unit holds plus additional refrigerant to account for the line set. * Customer Complaint - I never authorized adding coolant on this date (the tech talked to my son who was home). Our Answer - This is our common practice, especially to existing customers, to provide the customer temporary cooling while making their decision. We do not hold the customer hostage without cooling. * Customer Complaint - That the coil needed to be replaced. It would cost me $792. I was shocked since the unit is only 3.5 years old. Our Answer - A leaking coil was covered by the manufacturer limited parts warranty. The price of $792.00 was to cover the labor and installation materials associated with it. * Customer Complaint - I have had several HVAC technicians inspect both the inside and outside units. Our Answer - The customer did not allow us to follow up on these claims. We questioned the validity of such since refrigerant does not have a smell as she indicated. We did our best to work with this customer and did not mislead her at anytime. Being in business since 1964 is good proof that we stand behind our work. Unfortunately, she had a failure that we could not have prevented and was caught up in a refrigerant change over that was mandated by federal regulations.

When contacted they came out quickly to give me an estimate. After telling them I wanted them to do the work they came out quickly and did everything in 1 day. Professional, courteous, and kept work site clean. They prepared all the paperwork for me to get the Carrier rebates and to get the CPS rebates. Always very responsive to return calls. Excellent company and work. Very happy with the installation and finished product. I would definitely use them again.

I feel that we get fast turn-around and honest, straight-forward service.
Description of Work: C & J has been our AC service company for about 8 years. They were recommended to us through word of mouth (our plumber). This is a well-run, old-San Antonio AC company that brings a lot of integrity and service ethic to the table. Our builder-installed AC is about 9 years old and we know it will need replacing soon. C & J has given us a fair bid for a new unit. Other bids we got from other providers came with high-pressure sales. C & J avoided that completely. At the same time, they continue to help keep the old unit going. Had the coil replaced this past spring-- Pricing was around $1,200 parts & labor, which was the best pricing we found among others who quoted the coil part to us. Also, we use their twice-yearly service plan every year which has helped keep the unit going.

Super service!! C and J came to our house on 1/13/11 for our winter maintenance check up and found a broken plastic duct in our attic unit. This duct led to out kitchen/family room. It was broken beyond repair and had to be replaced. Spoke with owner, Ronnie, and he explained costs to us before work was done, and then set up the appointment with us. Adolfo came on 1/19/11 to replace and repair it. It's not an easy area to get into, but Adolfo was a trooper and got it fixed and attached to the existing ductwork. Aldofo also warned us of problems he saw with some pipework we had done by a plumber which was put over the air conditioning ducts in attic and would cause problems if we needed to put in a new air compressor in the future. He let us know what we'd be looking at with that pipework needing to be moved to put in the compressor. So grateful that he let us know possible costs and what we'd have to do in the future so we could plan for it. Adolfo even cleaned up in the yard where some insullation had blown. He left everything s*** and span. We have used Cand J for over 20 years and trust them, and we know they will do the best job, as well as let us know everything they are doing and what needs to be done. They take care of our units and us!! Highly recommend C and J !!!!

I liked them. They are very prompt when they say they are going to be here, they are very informative and they are good at what they do. I think the price is reasonable and it's cheaper than some of the rates I've seen from other providers who say they don't charge extra for holidays and weekends, but they double their rates all week. I think C and J doesn't charge extra on the weekends if you're a regular customer. They've probably been here probably 15-20 years. They are always very helpful and friendly. I had one technician come out and found wiring that established when they house was built and one area was close to having a fire. He cut it out and brought it in to show me so I would understand what was going on.

They were not the original installers of the unit but they were more responsive than my original a/c company. They were able to get the fan motor at a Carrier warehouse and installed it in very timely manner. The only issue really was the price. It was a bit pricey for 45min of work. Note: I had the fan motor die on me again within a month and they came out the next day and replaced the old fan motor. They did not charge me again for the service and the fan motor was still under warranty. Overall, I'm satisfied with the company.

I called them during the day and asked if it was possible to have someone come out and look at the AC that was not cooling. They told me it might take a day since this was the busy season. However, they were able to get one of their "after hours" technicians to come over and look at it that day. He was there less than an hour and got all the work done.
Description of Work: They came out and cleaned my AC both inside and outside. The AC had not been cleaned by the previous home owner, so it was really bad. Fortunately, they were able to get it running again (it stopped cooling).
