Job was done, but I'm doubtful if it was done properly. Fan can only be used with the remote. If remote goes bad, I can't use the fan anymore. The fan & light should be able to operate independently by the wall switch, but perhaps I'm wrong on that point. I think $133.00 to change out an existing fan was excessively high.

Response from All Star Electric
I must say that I am shocked by this review. You provided the fan and the remote that you wanted us to install. You cannot have independent control of the fan and light with switches if you want to have a remote control operate them. The one switch was left connected as an override so you could turn the fan off in the event that the remote stopped working properly. With regard to the pricing, we provide you with a hard quote before we begin any work. You signed off on the quote authorizing the work to be done. If you had any problems with the price, you could have just turned down the repair. Also if you do a little shopping around, you will find that we are not excessively high compared to other electrical contractors. Occasionally we run specials on fan installs, as other contractors do, that would reduce that cost, but our everyday price is very competitive with other contractors. The thing that is most concerning to us about this review is that you never called us with any questions, comments, or concerns. We thought you were happy with the work. You really should contact a company and give them a chance to address your concerns before you just write a bad review that is completely unjustified. We would have been happy to explain why you could not operate the light and fan from switches and from the remote. I hope I have addressed your concerns with this response. Thank you and I hope you have a good day.

I was stunned to learn that the $100 Angie's list voucher covered over half the cost to change two light bulbs. There are far better companies that can provide basic electrical work (changing light bulbs isn't really considered electrical work) for a far more reasonable and fair price.
Description of Work: The electrician was very professional, excellent at his craft and I would hire him again; however, not at the price I paid. He literally changed 2 light bulbs for me albeit one was on a high ceiling that required a ladder and they charged me $56 dollars. The first two quotes provided were incorrect.

I apologize for any confusion that has been created with the work at your home. The deal you bought is supposed to be for one trip out to your home. We would then do whatever work you needed done and would apply a credit of $100 towards those services performed. You scheduled us to come out to your home on 10/27/2016 to replace a ceiling fan light kit, repair two lights that were not working, and check a third fixture's socket for damage. When we got to your home, you had purchased the wrong type of ceiling fan light kit. We only found that out after first trying to install the light kit. We then repaired the two lights while we were there (they happened to just be bad bulbs). We also tested other fixture's socket to determine if it was working and found that it was. That was all the work you gave us to do that day. We went over everything done with you at your home that day. We were at your home from 2:56 p.m. until 5:21 p.m. The deal you bought is supposed to apply to one trip and one trip only. No matter what services you have us do while we are there. We were trying to help you out by giving you some additional credit from that original credit of $100 to use towards another repair. That means we came out to your home and did some repairs for you for a total of $53 (we gave you $47 to keep to use towards additional repairs). There are not a lot of electricians that would make a trip to your home, diagnose your problems, and make repairs for $53. Our minimum charge to come to someone's home is higher than that. Every licensed electrician in San Antonio is significantly higher than that. We were trying to work with you to keep a happy customer. It was certainly not our fault that you purchased the wrong ceiling fan light kit. We did not have to carry over any of the $100 credit. Again, we were trying to keep you as a happy customer. According to your email to us on 11/7/2016 at 2:13 p.m., you seemed very happy with us for giving you that $47 credit to keep to use for additional repairs. You even commended our technician in that email saying, "he is a hard worker, very professional and I am more than satisfied with the work he provided". You even requested a quote for additional work at your home in that email. With regard to the comment that our first two quotes were wrong, that is slightly misstated. We only provided two quotes. The first quote assumed that all the work listed on the quote would be done the day we came out to do the work. As I explained to you in our email correspondence 11/3/2016, that price was dependent on all the work being performed that day. We work on a flat rate system. We give a price for an electrical repair, and then all the other repairs done while we are there are at an "add on" rate to the original item. The original item on that quote was your ceiling fan light kit. Then we did the "add on" rate for the bulbs to be replaced. We do it this way because if we just did one price no matter if the item was added onto another ticket, the price for every item we do would have to be much higher in case someone called us out to there home only to replace one lamp. Some companies operate that way. We are trying to keep prices as low as possible for our customers without sacrificing quality. We would be out of business really quick if we only charged someone $12 to drive out to their home, diagnose a lamp, and then replace it. When you took off the original ticket item (the ceiling fan light kit), we then had to change one of the "add on" rate lamp replacements to an original priced item which increased one of the lamp replacements to $41. That brought your new quote to $53 (one original priced lamp replacement plus one "add on" rate lamp replacement. That is why there was a price discrepancy with the first quote to the second quote. $53 is still an incredible price to get an electrician to come to your home, troubleshoot your problems, and make repairs. That was explained to you and you seemed fine with it during our conversations. I am sorry that we could not keep you a happy customer. I hope you have a better experience with another electrician.

I bought a "big deal" off Angie's List. The company called me back almost immediately and scheduled someone to come over the next morning at 8 am. I had expected to wait several weeks! This company is DISHONEST AND WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOU!!! I DO NOT recommend them AT ALL. Find an honest electrician instead. I purchased an Angie's List coupon for $117 for two hrs of electrical work to check out a GFCI that had been tripping, as well as a couple of electrical outlets. The electrician came out, ran a couple of very brief tests, and stated that a wire was loose and problem solved. It was nowhere near two hours of work but I was okay with that. The next day, the same GFCI tripped again, and I called to have the electrician come back. When I asked, I was told I would only be charged for parts. Two electricians came this time, and replaced the GFCI and a couple of electrical plugs. Another very brief visit. However, at the end of their visit, they presented me with a bill for $95 for "parts only" - three plugs!!!! One of the plugs was a standard plug that you can buy at Lowe's for 50 cents. THEY CHARGED ME $30.00 for that plug! Not to mention two GFCI's at $35.00 each - part only, as labor fees had already been paid. When I questioned the charge, the electrician gave me a smooth, double-talk speech about how I was lucky they weren't charging me more - WHAT?!?!? When I called the manager, Erik, to complain, he - after much slick talk and condescension - admitted that the charges were absurd, but blamed it on their "system". I told him an electrician who works on outlets all day knows he is wrong when he writes down a charge of $30 for a simple plug. Erik finally agreed to refund me $35. Weeks later, I have NEVER received the refund. DISHONEST, DISHONEST, DISHONEST. When I called today, Erik insisted that they sent to check last month. Interesting that this particular check never made it to my mailbox, yet I have never had an issue with the mail before. Again, DISHONEST. I am reticent to write a negative review, but I am writing this one because there are a lot of honest electrical repair companies out there who deserve the work. This is NOT one of them. STAY AWAY FROM THIS DISHONEST COMPANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Response from All Star Electric
I’m very sorry to see this review. First off, our company has never, and will never try to take advantage of anyone for any reason. When you bought the 2 hours of electrical service deal, we came out to your home on 7/13/2016 and tried to resolve the issues you were having. We troubleshot the circuit and we found and repaired a loose connection in one of the receptacles on the circuit that day. When we left, the circuit was tested and was working. We then received a call back from you a few days later saying that you were having issues again and we came back out to try to resolve the issues again. When we came back on 7/18/2016, we found that you had two GFCI’s that were having some issues and looked to be starting to go bad on that circuit. We replaced those and also replaced the plug that originally had the bad connection just to make sure there would be no problems there down the road. I am sorry we didn’t catch these on the first trip, but this can happen with circuits sometimes. Sometimes there are several problems on a circuit and some of them only happen sporadically so they are harder to troubleshoot and resolve. We couldn’t even have known the problem was going to continue there after our first trip to your home since everything was working when were finished our work at your home. Now we were trying to be helpful and not charge you any additional labor or any additional trip fees for our second trip. Had we found these items the first trip out though, you would have been billed for that labor and the parts it took to repair the circuit at that point as you had only paid for two hours of labor and it would have gone well past that to make the repairs. I can also say with absolute confidence that any other electrical company would have billed you for their time on this return trip as this was additional work outside the repairs made the first day. Your statement that we were there nowhere near 2 hours on that first trip is just either a mistake on your part, or a gross mischaracterization of our company’s integrity. We have GPS tracking on all our vehicles so we know exactly how long the technician was there. Again we were trying to be helpful and fair to you by not billing you for the labor for these additional repairs since we didn’t catch them on the first trip. All we were seeking was compensation for the additional materials we provided during the second visit. Now the technician did make a billing error the day they came back to your home. That was partly due to the fact that we were starting to transition to a fully digital system (for our work orders and invoices) and they looked up the wrong part codes on their iPad while preparing the invoice. Invoicing in the field in this way was brand new to them and they made a mistake. Your job was only the 3rd job they had done with the new system at that point. Prior to the transition to digital, we had always given them the prices from the office. Therefore our technician would not have known the correct pricing for ever item they might install as they never needed to know. We found our billing mistake on that Friday (7/15/2016) as we were processing the invoices from the week. We issued you a refund check (check number 10236 dated 7/19/2016 in the amount of $35.00) in the following days. We let you know that we had issued you the check on 7/19/2016 as well. Now I am sorry if somehow that check didn’t get to you, but we have no control over the mail. Let me ask though, why would we inform you that we had made a billing mistake (unsolicited), say we had sent you a check, and then not send it? That doesn’t even make sense. I was present when Eric was talking with you over the phone. He never said anything of the sort that you were “lucky” we weren’t charging you more. What he said was that we were not going to charge you a trip charge and for the labor to make these corrections, but that we could have been justified to charge them to you since the repairs were outside of what we had worked on the prior trip. He was just trying to explain to you the reason that we were billing you for the material for the second trip because you were asking us why you had to pay for anything. Then you accused us of only overcharging for the material “because we were dealing with you and not your husband”. That is absurd to put it nicely. To try to correct this for you, I have issued a stop payment on that original refund check and I had reissued you another check (check number 10271 dated 8/18/2016) in the amount of $35.00. I am now voiding that refund check and issuing you a check (check number 10272 dated 8/19/2016) in the amount of $95.00 to fully refund your money spent on the repairs made during our second visit to your home. Please let us know if you don’t receive it by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week so we can get this corrected. I will tell you that we have been in business for over 20 years and have always taken pride in maintaining good customer relationships. You have taken what was really an honest billing mistake and made it out like we were out to get you. You even implied that we only were out to get you because we’d rather deal with your husband. In over 20 years of being in business, this accusation was definitely a first for us. We tried to make it right by issuing you a refund check and for some reason that never made it to you. I know that just compounded your frustration with us and I am sorry that happened. I can say with absolute certainty that the check was mailed because I put it into the mailman’s hand myself (he has to come in to our reception area every day to collect our outgoing mail). We didn’t even realize that you hadn’t received it until your phone call back to the office. We are sorry for your dissatisfaction and that is why we are issuing a full reimbursement for the charges you paid on our second trip to your home. Hopefully this helps change your view that we are a dishonest company. If it does not, that is unfortunate. We definitely are not a dishonest company. There is a reason that our company has been around as long as it has. There is a reason that we have an “A” rating on Angie’s List and an “A+” rating with the Better Business Bureau. We have never been dishonest with a customer and we never will. Thank you and I hope you have a good weekend ahead. Rick Grohman

A waste of money After having paid for the big deal, the electrician showed up and thereafter advised it would cost an additional $2-300. for labor involved in connecting the outlets -which was not in my budget. I told him I would call them back when I had the money or I would use my big deal for something else. Thereafter I had an issue with my outside lights so I called. I was told I used up the 2 hour big deal when they came out to estimate. They sent the same gentleman out who was pleasant and well mannered , however he spent three hours , could not find the problem, and could not fix the problem. He couldn't locate "the j box" ( I had no clue what that was). I was charged for an additional two hours and nothing was fixed nor accomplished. The following Monday I had a Master electrician from another company come out, he spotted the " j box" in 3 minutes, fixed the light problem all in a matter of 15 minutes. All in all I paid for the big deal and the additional hours without a diagnosis or repair. The electrician was calling the owner for assist but the owner apparently couldn't or wouldn't help. No solution nor refund was offered which is the reason I rated price as a D. The guy who came out tried ( because he tried- B for his professionalism)but without assistance he was unable to diagnose nor fix the problem

While getting a home inspection as part of buying a new property some issues were noted by the inspector. I called All Star to come do an inspection of the problems. They gave me an honest opinion of what really needed to be fixed and what didn't. My house was built in 1977 and some of the issues noted by the home inspector were standard procedure at that time and didn't need to be fixed. All inspections and work performed were timely and friendly.

I am extremely pleased with the work that was done! All Star sent two electricians out to work together on the project and they were knowledgeable, efficient, and friendly! I was able to ask questions, and they would take time to come get me to explain different parts of the process so that I was aware of all that they were doing inside my bathroom walls and attic. The end product is beautiful! The only thing to know up front is that All Star does not repair the drywall that they have to cut through to get to the wiring, so I will have to have someone come do that part of the job. Granted, they make as little damage to the wall as possible and it really isn't bad at all - I decided to save the money and put a picture over the wall! :)
