One week went by, I called to inquire regarding my estimate. Brittney told me Jerry had been ill and they were very busy. I told her I hoped Jerry was busy and no rush just please get me an estimate. It's been two weeks today, still no estimate for the work I would like done. I don't think Jerry ever intended to do the work because he never took measurements of the square footage, never asked about it, maybe the job wasn't big enough?? Who knows! If that's the case, their ad is very misleading........I'll call someone else, perhaps they will want the job. I will not use or recommend this company. I hope my next experience with Angie's List is better!!
Description of Work: I called Handyman Matters to schedule an appt. for an estimate. Brittney was very nice, explained they were very busy and that Jerry would be out on July 19. Jerry was scheduled for 9 a.m., actually was 5-10 minutes early that morning, very polite. He didn't take any measurements, however, did not give me a date when I could expect an estimate. He listened to what I wanted done and left. Haven't heard from him since, it's been two weeks as of today.

The gentleman that answered the telephone was very courteous. I told him what I needed and that it was an emergency. He was kind enough to let men know that he was fully occupied for the day and the remainder of the week but he was professional enough to provide me some excellent referrals. I was able to use one of his referrals, Alamo City Handymen. They were available and came out the same day to replace my shattered door. I told Alamo City Handymen who provided the referral and were very grateful. For this excellent referral, I thank Handyman Matters.

This is not good business and I would not recommend using them. Very unreliable. If they can't make it out to even look at the property, how reliable would they be when they started. Very poor customer service!!
Description of Work: I contacted this provider a month ago and set up an appointment to get a bid on fixing water damage to the rear of one of my homes. They sent a repairman to go out and take measurements. After calling them for a week after this was done, they told me that the repairman had quit and they could not use his information. They never called me let me know that. I set up another appointment for a week later, which was not met. I was told that they could out a week a alter.

I contacted Handyman Matters via their website. I requested a handyman by filling in the "request a handyman" info. I received a call the next day. After I explained the repair I needed done the appointment setter said they charged $65 per hour with a one hour minimum. She also stated they charge in 15 minute increments for any partial hours. I needed my shower fixed so I agreed. She said the soonest they could send someone was on June 4th. Stephen showed up about 10 after 1 pm not exactly what I would call on time. He spent the first day removing the old faucet. On the invoice he wrote down that he removed the plastic shower panels. That is not exactly true. I had removed two of the shower panels in an effort to fix the problem myself; he only removed one more shower panel to check for water damage. I was unable to remove the faucet so I ended up capping off the water lines so I could turn the water back on. The pipe coming down from the shower head had two elbow type fittings on it creating an S curve so I could not figure out how to get the old faucet off without tearing out part of the wall. I decided I was in over my head and I had to call in a pro. Stephen had to cut out part of the drywall to remove the old faucet and install the new faucet properly. First he told me he would have to go and get a fitting to replace the two elbow fittings. A few minutes later he told me he could lower the shower head so he wouldn?t need the fitting after all. When I asked if the shower panel would still fit he said yes but I would have to buy a cover/plug to cover one of the holes in the shower panel. I wasn?t thrilled with that but I didn?t want to stop the repair to go get a new panel. Later Stephen said the new faucet had an extra knob to turn the shower off and on so he was going to have to cut another hole in the panel. First the panel had too many holes then he had to cut an extra hole? My confidence in Stephen began to fade as the day went on. Stephen nailed pieces of 2x4s (which I supplied) in place to replace the drywall. He installed the new faucet. He cleaned up the bathroom putting everything in the tub so we could use the bathroom if needed. I told him not to worry about it since we were not using that bathroom but he insisting on cleaning up before he left. I just wonder how much time he took to clean up. Fifteen minutes of clean up time equals $16.25 added to the labor cost. That is more than I make in an hour so I would have rather done the cleanup myself. The second day Stephen replaced the drywall and shower panels and put the faucet handles on. He spent a lot of time sanding the glue off the shower panels before replacing them. When I went to check on him he said he was having a hard time getting the glue off. I asked if there was a glue stripper available. He said no the only way to get it off was to sand it off. He also stated that the shower walls would never fit the same again. That was cause for concern; I asked if they would stay on the walls. He said yes he would put plenty of liquid nails to make sure they stayed on. Had I known it would take so long to reuse the exiting shower panels I would have gone out and bought new ones. While I do appreciate quality work and attention to detail I also appreciate a sense of urgency to get the job done in a timely manner. At $65 an hour it may have been cheaper to buy new shower walls than to pay Stephen to sand off the old ones. I was told the second day?s work would take 2 maybe 2 ½ hours it ended up being 5 hours. I did not want to stand over Stephen watching his every move so I left him alone to do his work. I really don?t know why it took so long. He said he had trouble getting the new faucet installed but that was done on the first day?!? He said he dreaded plumbing jobs especially in older homes because they never go smoothly. Maybe he should have passed this job on to a more experience handyman. At 1 pm he still was not done. I told him I needed to be somewhere at 2 pm. His response was ?I was supposed to be somewhere at one.? I didn?t comment on his response I told him I guess I will have to call and reschedule my appointment. He said ok, no apology for taking so long and making me miss my appointment. I was in the bathroom when Stephen was testing the faucets and shower. There was quite a bit of debris in the bathtub from the drywall repair. When I asked if all that stuff would go down the drain Stephen said it was just dust and that it would dissolve. The next thing I know Stephen was asking for a plunger. Not good! The drain was working before the shower faucet started leaking. I thought great I have a faucet that works now but a drain that is clogged. Again?not good! I did not have a plunger so Stephen went somewhere to buy one. While he was gone the water did drain out of the tub leaving a thick layer of drywall pieces and wet dust on the bottom of the tub. I cleaned the bottom of the tub. When I picked up the debris I had a hand full, I?m not exaggerating the palm of my hand was FULL of crap that Stephen was attempting to wash down the drain! After I cleaned the tub I turned on the shower to rinse the tub and to see if the water would drain. The water did not drain but what was worse the pipe for the shower head was leaking. There was a stream of water running from the pipe down the shower wall. I also noticed because the shower head was lower a notch had been cut out of the top of the shower panel. The round plate that fits over the shower pipe was half on the shower panel and half on the wall, it was sitting at an angle and it looked like crap. When Stephen came back I showed him the leak. He blamed it on the old fitting. He removed the pipe put more plumbers? putting on the fitting and retighten after that it did not leak. So was it the old fitting or handyman error? I really hope the pipe or faucet are not leaking inside the wall. After Stephen used the plunger and got the water to drain he said the drain attached to the bottom of the tub was too small that's why it got plugged up. I had to disagree. Trying to wash all the debris down the drain is what plugged it up! Would you wash left over cement down a drain?!? I don't think so! So why would you attempt to wash left over drywall down the drain? I really hope I don't have to call a plumber to snake out the drain/sewer line. While Stephen is a nice guy he is slow VERY slow. I had a different Handyman Service come out to the house, they claim the whole job would take a couple hours. Unfortunately they never got back to me with an estimate so I went back to Angie?s List to find someone else. When the first handyman service didn?t get back to me my father offered to fix the shower for me. My father is 88 he is considered legally blind in one eye and has arthritis in both hands. I believe that together we could have gotten it done and I don?t think it would have taken us NINE hours! I really feel like I got ripped off big time. When the appointment setter mentioned $65 an hour I figured a couple hours maybe three at the most so I was expecting $195 in labor max not $585!!! A two to three hour job took NINE hours. A job I thought would be done in one afternoon was stretched out to a two day project, four hours the first day and five hours the second day. I was prepared for six hours in labor four the first day and two the second day but it turned out to be five hours the second day. I feel I was really over charged. I paid for three hours of extra labor, three hours over how long I was told it would take. When Stephen had to go buy the plunger I was a bit upset. When he got back I told him I hope you know I am not paying you to go and buy a plunger. He said he understood. Stephen asked if I wanted the left over drywall. He had bought one sheet but only used a small portion of it. Since I knew he was going to add it to my bill I figured I should keep it. He bought a large can of texture he used a VERY small portion of the can I watched him spray it on the wall. He did NOT offer me the left over can of texture. I'm sure that was included in the $61.04 I was charge in supplies so why didn't I get to keep the can of texture? He told me he did not need the left over drywall, I guess he needed the left over texture. I did not see any receipts for supplies so how he came up with $61.04 for supplies I don't know. When Stephen left he said he hoped I was satisfied and that I would use them again. I told him it took a lot longer than I thought it would and it cost a lot more than I thought it would but the shower worked now so that is what mattered. As far as using them again I didn?t respond. My thoughts are probably NOT. A one hour job could end up taking half a day at $65 an hour that adds up fast. I live in a duplex. I spent almost $30,000 a couple years ago to have one side totally remodeled. It was a nightmare. They are the ones that put in the crazy fittings on the shower. I joined Angie's list to find good contractors to finish fixing up my house. So far I'm not having much luck finding any good ones. I have to give Handyman Matters a D capital D for very DISAPPOINTED. If you want to take a chance and use them I highly recommend getting a time quote in writing and make them stick to it. If it takes longer than it is supposed to don't let them charge you for the extra time. I feel I was over charged $195 for three hours of extra labor three hours over how long they said it would take. The whole project cost $350 more than I thought it should. Not good. I should have just torn out the drywall and fixed it myself. I could have used the trial and error method Stephen seemed to use and gotten back together somehow. But I took the easy way out and called a ?pro? to fix it for me...what a joke. My 88 year old father could have done it better!
Description of Work: Removed faucet from shower/tub. Repaired drywall. Sanded glue off shower panels and replaced. Caulked shower panels. Used can of texture to texture new drywall to match existing drywall. Tried to wash drywall debris down tub drain and plugged up drain. Went and bought plunger to unplug drain. Stephen let me keep the plunger, he said in an older home you really need a plunger. Funny I never needed one before. I was charged $61.04 for supplies so I think I actually paid for the plunger. Edit in reply to company response: What part of it took a lot longer than I thought it should and it cost more than I thought it would made Stephen think I was satisfied? I did NOT complement him! Yes it is true I did ask him about an outdoor light. I was curious what he would say. I wanted to see if he would claim to have electrical skills since it was obvious to me he did not have any plumbing skills. His response was kind of lame. He said that the company is basically labor for hire and that if I bought the light “we” can install it. He did not say “I” can install it. I took a closer look at the Handyman Matters website. It is a franchise. The website was not created by anyone is San Antonio, TX it was created by someone in Lakewood, CO. The website is impressive it lists many services. After re-reading every Angie’s List review I could find it is obvious I picked the wrong company. There is not one review I could find that had anything to do with plumbing. Stephen did me a disservice by taking on a job he was obviously not qualified to complete in a timely manner. A SKILLED handyman could have put up drywall in the whole bathroom plus install the shower panels and faucet in NINE hours. If he would have taken that long to do something in your house I don’t think you would have been impressed. The only alternative he gave me was to lower the shower head. If I would have known he was going to notch the top of the shower panel I would have said no. He did not tell me the shower pipe cover would not fit properly. It is half on the wall half on the shower panel, it looks like crap. I was the one that suggested glue stripper to speed up the reinstallation of the shower panels. I think the only reason Stephen bought the plug cover was to try to get on my good side. He could tell I was upset because he was taking so long. For your information I put the plug cover on myself Stephen did not install it for me. It was not a "decorative" plug cover it was a plain white cover. When Stephen was standing in the bathtub plunging away I asked him if I could just have the bill so I could pay him. I wanted him out of my house. I’m glad you spoke to him about washing the drywall down the bath tub drain but I’m disappointed that you did not address his slower than a snail way of working. He milked the job for all it was worth. Every time I went to check on him he had another excuse ready. When I think of “Handyman” I think “Jack of all trades master of none.” Well you have the “master of none” part right. I have told several family members and friends about my experience with Handyman Matters. I have told them to spread the word. This company is a joke they are not qualified or experienced Handymen. They can do very simple jobs that is it! Do not call them with any "difficult" jobs you will regret it I know I reget it.

Response from Ace Handyman Services San Antonio
Each issue our craftsman encountered during the course of completing the work was reviewed with the member, alternatives were discussed, an option selected by the member and approval obtained before going forward. The member was billed for the following material used on the project – plumber’s putty, toughrock (drywall) and mud, liquid nails, caulk, and sandpaper; with our mark-up, these items totaled $61.04. The member was not billed for the can of texture, the plunger, nor a decorative wall/switch plate our craftsman replaced. At the completion of the work, the member indicated she was satisfied with the job and complimented our craftsman. The member also had our craftsman review an exterior lighting problem in the back yard. I apologize that our craftsman did not vacuum out the tub before testing/running the water and for arriving 10 minutes late without notifying the member, and I have addressed this with him.

I scheduled an appointment with Handyman Matters 2.5 weeks ago (I thought if it is that far out they must be good). I was scheduled to have a tech from Handyman Matters come out to my house on 5 June at 2pm for some minor electrical work. I took off of work to be there when I received a call at 145 saying the tech will not be coming out as a previous job ran into more issues than he anticipated. I understand things happen, but when the agent told me the nearest time they could reschedule me was another 2.5 weeks out and there was nothing she could do. I asked why can they not fit me in sometime that week she said there was nothing she could do and she was sorry. Everything I asked for her to remedy the situation It was just I am sorry I cannot do anything except reschedule me for 2.5 weeks out. If you use Handyman Matters you better pray everything goes well the day you are supposed to have service if not you will automatically put on the bottom of their priority list.

We called 4 companies to get quotes on a small bathroom remodel and painting 2 bedrooms with popcorn removal. I initially contacted Handyman Matters through email and they responded the same day. We had contacted Handyman Matters to come do about an hours worth of work for us. The handyman didn't show up or call. I called the business #. They had the handyman contact us directly. Supposedly his battery died and he could probably come to our home in about an hour and a half. He was to call us and let us know. He never bothered so after 2 hours we called him. He was not very apologetic and said he could maybe be there in another 1 1/2 hours, which would have been 8 p.m. We said no thanks. I understand that things come up but this seemed very odd and the least someone could do is call. I called the business office a day or two later to tell them the situation. Though they were apologetic they did not offer to send out a different handyman or anything so we will be going elsewhere.

I think it was supposed to be around $4000 and they came in $1000 over their estimate. The people that they had were nice and seemed knowledgeable. The price seemed okay until they came in $1000 over budget and that was one of our early issues. I probably won't use them again right now because their procedure was vague; we got halfway through it and said they might have to do a couple of extra things. So we said okay and then when it came down to it, it was $1000 over and we weren't really told specifics. We were already told it would take extra hours and that it involved extra labor and everything. So, that was our only beef; that they charged a lot more without really warning us. But it still came out well and that was my only problem and I didn't fight with them over it too much. I might use them again in the future.

My first experience with Handyman Matters was calling them to hang our new chandelier light fixture over the dining table. I asked them to come as soon as possible. They sent Stephen quickly, and he did a very good job. Not long after that we learned that family was coming to visit for a week. All of those little things that needed attention that I was trying to ignore came to the forefront of my mind, and I found myself calling Handyman Matters requesting that things be done as soon as possible again. They sent a different person from the one they sent the first time, and it did not work out because he had a tendency to do things without asking the homeowner's opinion. I'm not complaining about this because the one they sent was very polite and likeable, and Handyman Matters bent over backwards to make sure we were satisfied. For example, I was not happy with the color of the caulk that the first person put in the kitchen. Walter made a trip to three different stores gathering caulk color samples. He brought them over, and we picked the best color. Stephen was sent to complete the work and did an excellent job. The color of the caulk in the kitchen turned out to be perfect, and it's so nice to shower without seeing missing and cracked caulk. We enjoyed greeting our company at a front door that not only looked great but worked. The policy at Handyman Matters is that, if work needs to be redone, the customer is not charged for the redo. I very much appreciate them for getting the work done in a timely manner, for their outstanding customer service, their insistence on top notch quality, and the fact that they do not try to do jobs they are not comfortable doing. Walter referred us to both a plumber as well as a glass company, and I even found this impressive! We have already started on a new list for them.

My appointment was scheduled for 4/23 @ 8am. I was told the handyman would call the day before. I did not receive a call. I called at 8am the day of my appt. to be told that the individual could not make the appt. due to extenuating circumstances (which is fine, thing happen), and that they could not re-schedule a new appt. until the following week. Oh, I was told that someone might be able to come out later in the evening, possibly, but there was no guarantee. Not only was my appt. not kept, I was not informed in any way (I called to find out about the cancellation), nor was any effort made to accommodate a "make up" the appointment in any timely manner. Wow.

Response from Ace Handyman Services San Antonio
Unfortunately our craftsman had a family emergency that needed immediate attention. The soonest we could reschedule the member’s appointment was the following week. The member asked if we could “bump” another customer to accommodate them; we said we would not.

A representative from the company came out and gave me an estimate to put up gutters and replace some wood rot on the roof of my garage. The estimate looked good, so I hired Handyman Matters to do the job. A different crew came out to do the work. At the end of the job, they handed me a bill for twice the original estimate, explaining that the wood rot had been more extensive than the original estimator had indicated. I complained to the main office and after some discussion they agreed to charge me the original price. A few days latter it rained and i realized that the workers had hung the gutters wrong. Instead of sloping down towards the drain, they titled away from the drain spout causing rain to pool at the opposite end of the gutters. I called the company again and they sent out a new person to fix the gutters. Ultimately, Handyman Matters did the job at a good price, but it took two attempts and some complaining on my part.
Description of Work: Hanging gutters on my garage. Replacing some wood rot on the roof of the garage. Digging up a concrete post.

Jerry (and helper-Rudy) arrived, not just on time, but early. They was very professional (introduced themselves, made friends w/the dogs, checked out the job). they knew exactly what to do and got the job started and completed in just a little over an hour. We are EXTREMELY PLEASED with everything. Well worth the money spent. Jerry talked about other types of jobs they do, so we will be using Handyman Matters again in the near future. (See if I can't reduce the size of my "Honey-Do" list)
Description of Work: We needed to have an old "Over The Stove" microwave removed and a replacement installed.

We placed a phone call to have someone come out and give an estimate (3-day wait). After we accepted the estimate, we scheduled them to do the work described above. We used Angie's coupon to save $40 on the service fee.
Description of Work: The back door to the garage wouldn't latch properly. The handyman determined that the door was sagging slightly on its hinges. He rehung the door using longer hinge screws. Next, it was determined the striker plate was not properly positioned, so he used a Dremil to grind off a small portion. That did the trick. Also, a bi-fold closet door was off its roller. We had tried to replace it, but each time it would last for only a few weeks. He solved the problem.

Called and set up an appointment for an estimate. The Handyman came out and made a list of my jobs and I was provided with a quote by email 2 days later. I accepted and scheduled a day for the work to be completed. The first day half of the work was completed, but I had purchased the wrong power pack for the lights, so the Handyman said he would come back in 2 days to give me a chance to get the correct supplies. He showed up 2 days later and completed most of the work, but I needed to exchange 2 of the lights that were defective. A days was rescheduled for 2 days later for him to come back once I replaced the defective items. He arrived and completed the installation of the lights. I was only charged the original price I was quoted, even thought he had to come out 3 times because of mistakes I made and defective supplies. I was very happy with the entire experience. He was not going to leave until I was completely satisfied with the finished job. He also would not accept payment until ALL of the work was completed. I will definitely use this company again...
Description of Work: Replaced lights lining steps up to the front door. Installed security flood light on the side of the house. Installed address plaque over the garage. Installed garden hose reel on the side of the house. (all of these jobs involved drilling into the brick on the outside of the house)

They were wonderful on the phone and just as nice when they came out. Steven and Walter (owner) came out to do the work. They did what I thought no one would. I thought I was going to have to return all 6 large baskets. They were terrific and calling them again this week for more work. Thank you!!!
Description of Work: Needed someone to hang some large baskets up about 20ft in my home.
