We asked them to make sure that to demolish a deck, and then if they could, we wanted to replace the flagstone that matched the surrounding flagstone. We would have been okay with a slightly different flagstone, as long as it wasn't significantly different. We just wanted final approval before they started to do anything that was didn't involve removing the deck. We wanted to make sure that we were happy with the flagstone decision. The contractor did offer two samples while we were still discussing the matter. Then, I sent him an email telling him not to purchase either of those samples. In spite of that email, on the second callback, he said that he'd already purchased the material and started lifting it. I was very upset and told him to stop all work. He told me that he was not able to stop at that point and continued to work (for a little while) against my advisement. The work was very unprofessional and they were did a poor job. The deck was originally flat for six feet, but they wanted to add steps and make it have two levels. They didn't even consult with us about that. Finally, when they stopped all work, they left the concrete lying around on top of the grass. Of course, now my grass is damaged as well.
Description of Work: Attempted to replaced a wooden deck with flagstone. There was to be another $2500 upon completion.

Response from Reid Services
Much of the statements in this review are not accurate and we have emails and accepted estimates to prove the true description of what transpired on this project. Reid Services contracted this stone patio project through [removed member name] management company for this is a rental and [removed member name] lives out of country. This project was to be the removal of an old deck and the extend an existing stone patio as well as replacing 7 cedar pergola posts and rebuilding steps from the new patio to the back door with a total cost of 5700.00. [removed member name] was to have 50% Material deposit to us before starting this project but wouldn't decide between using credit card with 3% fee or mailing a check. Before starting [removed member name] was informed that matching the stone exactly to a 10 year old stone patio was not possible but we could get very close with a slight variance in color. He responded by saying he trusted our professional judgment and to proceed. On good faith we started the project with no down payment with understanding that we needed that material check to purchase the patio stone (the main bulk of material costs). this was to be a 4 day project. Day 1 remove the old deck and begin removal of dirt to prep for a solid foundation. Day 2 finish removal of dirt and replace with stable patio foundation. Day 3 install border stone and patio stones. Day 4 install mortar between patio stone punch-out and clean up. On day 1 during removal of the old deck we realized there was an old concrete patio under half of the deck at a higher elevation than the existing stone patio(in construction some times we find unforeseen issues under decks, sheetrock, or flooring). At Reid Services we pride ourselves on not coming up with surprises especially not surprise costs. We immediately informed [removed member name] of the issue and gave him the options.1 we could extend the existing stone patio until we hit the concrete patio the step up onto the concrete patio and stone across it, 2 we could build the new stone patio at the elevation of the concrete patio then step down to the old stone patio, 3 we could remove the old concrete patio and extend the stone patio even but this would be additional removal costs. I recommended the second option because it would give a good barrier between old stone and new and there would not be any additional charges even though this added significant base to the foundation. He was not happy about this but there was nothing we could do about it. After day 2 completed patio base completed he still had not gotten the material check to us so we had to take the day off because we could not fund his project. Also in my line of projects we do not have a 1 day project we can jump to. the next day we received the payment and got our guys back on site and began on the border stone as I was leaving my vendor with the patio stone I thought it would be good to shoot him a picture of a sample of the stone that was hanging on the wall. He responded by saying this rock looked nothing alike and it was unacceptable and not to pick it up and give him 20-30 min to call me back (it was on my trailer and in rout to the job). Once I got there the crew was ready to start installing but I put them on hold till we heard back from [removed member name]. I emailed him back 1 1/2 hours later and he began to tell me I was very unprofessional and I should have given him pictures sooner and to give him 20-30 more minutes to think about it. during this time my guys are sitting around on the clock so I sent him a side by side of the old stone and new showing it looked similar. after another 2 hours I email him again and he said to send my guys to do something else for a day or two and that he wanted to do a deck now and I was very unprofessional that all these issues should have been handled up front (customer told me to go ahead and never asked for pictures of the stone and the concrete patio issue could not be seen till the old deck was removed). AT this point we could not incur any more delay costs or push back any of our other customers that had been previously scheduled so we informed [removed member name] that we where pulling off his project and would not be returning unless we received full remaining payment as well as 750.00 delay and return fees (my vendor charged me a restock fee as well as my crew sitting around for half a day. He immediately put a stop payment on the material check and luckily it had gone through the management company. The management company had to get a lawyer to contact him and threaten legal action to get the money back. after this we tried to return to once realizing he was not having us back to finish the clean up but we where informed by the management company that he cancled there contract and we could not enter the property without his permission. Later he contacted me to build the deck in its place but was unhappy to here that the initial payment went to the material and labor to remove the deck and install the pad for the stone patio as well as the delays and return fees. he did not understand that had we built a deck we would not have done all that prep work for the foundation. Offered to do the deck at a discounted rate and no removal charge (seeing as that was done already) but he stopped corresponding and now I find this review. Reid Services has been in business for 4 years now and has not had a single bad review or dissatisfied customer. I have never pulled off a job before [removed member name] project and worked hard to rectify the issue and try to please him. I can and will show emails to prove all these statements if requested and ask that you see Reid Services has a good reputation and many satisfied customers with good quality work at a competitive price. Please feel free to call, text or email anytime to get a free estimate and look over our pictures on this site. Thank You Tim Reid 512-945-4944 Tim@reidservices.org www.reidservices.org Emails bellow: Hi Tonia, Dylan , Please make sure that the flagstone matches the already existing flagstone in color and pattern , I believe if that doesnt happens it will be a work which will be required to be done once again in future when I sell the house. Please confirm me either you or TIM email . I dont see any Email or Paper quotations though Tania I will look at those items when I go by today. I will do the best I can to match color and pattern. Additions to flagstone patios are not always flawless. Different quarry's may be used with a slight different shade to the color. I can assure you the quality of instillation will be there and I will do everything possible to find the best color match as well as match the pattern. I just want everyone to understand additions are noticeable some times especially when you are looking for it. I will follow up tonight with written estimate and better answers to the customers questions once myself and my Forman have a final look at the job today. Please call, email or text with any questions, comments or concerns. Hi Tim , I totally Understand that they may have slight difference, I am fine with that tolerance , Why i wanted to bring your attention was that many contractor will not make this efforts to match the flogstone color and pattern and they will built with totally new or different and I dont want to waste money here. secondly I respect your experience in this business but still to make it clear I believe you would follow the process as shown in the attached diagram so that it blends in terms of pattern and there is no vertical visible line. I hope you will concur with the approach. Please go ahead and do your best I would say. I hope you are leaving the Pergola as is if it need some maintenance do not hesitate to suggest. Thanks [removed member name] talks went back and forth until aug 17 2013 and I thought we had an understanding and where going to start his deck then we never heard from him again.
