Description of Work: Installment of new water softening system (replacement of old one)...we were told the new system needed a new carbon tank since our city's water had too much chlorine in the water.... our city's water department said: no way! we've had a lot of issues with the system, including carbon 'dust' and 'floaties' of carbon in the water, although our city's water department came out and checked the water and found it safe.

While the chlorine is at a safe level it does affect the resin beds in water softeners as well as seals in your water using appliances and even toilet flaps. Horrible.
Description of Work: We bought a Kinetico water softener ($2000) in 1996 which we were told should last 20-30 years or longer. Turns out it didn't make it to ten. (No, I WILL NOT recommend Kinetico-nor any expensive water softener again for that matter.) We started having trouble with the mechanical mechanism, then the tanks started doing weird things. Water Conditioning Systems from whom we bought the system had long gone out of business. So, we called American Watercare, the Kinetico dealer. They came out twice or three times, each time assuring us we should have soft water within 24 hours. This just simply did not happen. (By the way, they collected for a service call each time and each time the fixit procedure was different.)
