Excellent. I recommend Mickey Construction for this type of work. The owner, Stephen, personally supervised the work. I am in the construction management business on the commercial side and so I knew what I wanted and I was particular. Many service providers would hesitate for such an customer buy Stephen was confident. I wouldn't' normally have used Angie's List since I have a lot of contacts but I didn't want to draw from those relationships for this work. I asked for 6 sack concrete, 4000 psi, #4 rebar on 12" centers, chaired. light broom finish with a cure and seal. We discussed the crack control joints and expansion joints. I wanted the subgrade scraped up and compacted back down with added moisture and a sand cushion.....Stephen obliged - no problem. I even had a quirky need for expansion joints to have a zip strip and urethane sealant applied....Stephen obliged - no problem. I can assure you, I have the "baddest" concrete drive in Dallas. Stephen protected my house and new fence with a poly cover from wet saw and concrete work. I got text photo updates when I was not there staring at the work. The job was complete start to finish in two days as promised. He showed up and did exactly what he said he would do. That ranks him high in my books. I know construction costs too and I think I paid a fair price. Don't hesitate to call him.

It took 3 days to do the complete job, here is what happened: Stephen's crew started on Wednesday 6/20/2011 the came and preped the forms for laying the concrete after removing a good portion of the flower we had installed by a different vendor. On day 1 the forms had been laid and the concrete poured along with the removal of the flower bed. By day 2 they laid the flag stone for the greatest part of the patio with only the circle at the end out in the yard to finish. By day 3 they laid the the remainder of the flag stone. The 3rd day the work crew hand brushed the flag stone and acid washed the flag stone and the brick closes to the house to remove residue accumulated during the work and accumulated from before the patio was installed. Stephen and his crew came up with creative ways to modify the draining of the water away from the house. We have received lots of complements from neighbors who saw the patio while the fence was down (the fence came down back in March/April time frame so this fence repair was scheduled but since the fence vendor got delayed we installed the patio in the meantime while waiting for the fence repair). We are so greatful to Stephen Mickey for keeping to his schedule as best he could without any long delay in scheduling and having equipment and materials ready. We will refere friends and neighbers to Mickey Construction, expecting them to have the same positive experience we had.
Description of Work: We requested that we have a flower bed adjusted (removed) to accomidate the design of the patio. We worked with Stephen Mickey (owner) since last year on the planning of what we wanted and in the mean time while we were getting our funds aligned we had a flower bed installed using brick and stone we had remaining from our home construction (different vendor). Stephen Mickey, worked with us patiently without waisting valuable time by scheduling brief meetings about 30 minutes long to understand what kind of design and material we wanted to use to get this project done. Stephen overlayed an existing aggregate porch with Oklahoma 1" flag stone and extended the patio out to the end of the house just past the garage door (circle at the end of the patio which has a very small step on the grass side into the yard. Demolish concrete per plan and removed the remaining debree (this was the portion of the flower bed that had to be removed), this was necessary to widen the patio and make it look like the patio was installed with the house and since a portion of the flower bed wall has the same stone as on the front facing of our home the Oklahoma flag stone complements the flower bed.

Everything was perfect right from the first phone contact. Steven Mickey is a consumate professional and his team reflects that in their attitude and their work. He is great at communicating with the customer and keeps his word. He is prompt, reliable, and efficient. Everything went exactly as planned, on time, and quickly. The clean up afterwards was especially impressive. We would reccommend this company to anyone.

I am very pleased with the work that Steven Mickey construction did on my patio and pool decking. The owner, Steven Mickey did the work himself and was punctual and very professional. Steven's estimate came in $1600 less than the company that poured my pool decking, which after 5 years was crumbling on the surface. I couldn't say better things about this experience. Steven did great work and I would definitely use his company again.

They were very punctual and I did not have to worry about that. I spent about $1200 on that service. They replaced my grass that they tore up. There was one water sprinkler that was messed up that I noticed that evening when I went to turn it on. They came out immediately and repaired it. They did a very good job. I am going to use them again.

They did a beautiful job. Before the job was done, there was a little confusion in communication because he and I went out of town on different days. When it cam time for the work, they did exactly what was promised at exactly the time we agreed. This is not a big company, so users may not see much paperwork. That doesn't matter. They do what they promised; at least they did for me.

I spent $375 on that work. They did really well. I don?t know if there was any improvement needed. They did have to put the job off a couple of times but they knew I was ok with that as long as they did it before I went out of town. They did not arrive the first day but they kept me informed in advance. They were very easy to work with. Their price was comparable and industry wise it was a good price.

I am very disappointed that this review cannot be more positive. Mr. Mickey is a nice fellow & given his assurances, I expected he would be able to do a better job than the City, even if it cost more. Alas, such was not the case. 07/2010: Evaluated both the 100%-homeowner-paid/City contractor and the 50-50 cost share options with the City to replace sidewalk. City engineer produced a detailed bid, with a drawing that would have marginally accommodated the parkway tree; cost was $900. After interviewing the City contractor & speaking several times with City PW&T personnel, I was not comfortable with the specifics of the program (especially the requirement for me to pay in advance, before work was even begun). Moreover, their scale drawing did not provide sufficient off-set or a wide enough arc from the base of the tree. Mr. Mickey had done some sidewalk/driveway replacement in my neighborhood, so I contacted him also in 7/2010 for a bid. I was explicit about the need for the sidewalk arc to be wide enough to make room for the tree, & asking him to look at similar radius-work replacement sidewalks for trees a few blocks away. He produced a bid for $1700. Although this was nearly double the City's bid, it included the cost of a permit and the specialized work that would be needed (or so I thought). I was advised by the arborist caring for the tree to postpone the concrete work until after the hot summer, preferring a period of dormancy in late winter. 02/2011: I contacted Mr. Mickey & asked to schedule the job. By then, the bid had increased $100. He was very responsive to my calls and the work was easily scheduled at a mutually convenient day/time within a week or so. 03/02/2011: Mr. Mickey and crew arrived as promised @ 7 AM & got right to work, even though he did not yet have the City permit in hand. (He returned with the permit later that morning.) Demo of the old sidewalk was uneventful. As we chatted, I asked explicitly about the need for 1) a plumber to adjust the drain clean-out to the proper height, & 2) the need for soil or sand to create a suitable, stable, level bed for the new sidewalk. I was told neither would be needed. ~1/2 hour later, I was told that a plumber *would* be needed. So, I started working on that little unexpected glitch. Several minutes later he changed his mind again and said he could handle it. Uncomfortable with his flip-flopping, I opted to have my plumber come out, even though it was not easily done on such short notice. This was a harbinger of things yet to come. As the crew laid the forms, I saw that they made NO accommodation for the tree! Rather than creating an arc, as planned & discussed, it was clear they intended to hack & chop any/all tree trunk and roots to make room for a straight run of sidewalk. Whether he was unable (didn't know how?) or unwilling (couldn't be bothered?) to create a suitable radius, I now realized that this wasn't going to end favorably. After some discussion, Mr. Mickey eventually bent the forms a bit to make a bit of (insufficient) room for the tree. It was, however, nothing like the formal semi-circle or wide arc originally intended or planned. It didn't even come close to the City's original plan, let alone improve upon it. But, I was stuck -- he had demo'd the old concrete & I did not have a replacement contractor. I sensed by now that the job was going to proceed according to the contractor's wishes, not mine. The plan was for PW&T to perform their 1st inspection the next day (3/3), with plans to pour concrete either *late afternoon 3/3 or early 3/4*. At ~11 AM on 3/3, however, Mr. Mickey called to say he would be ready to pour at noon, even though I had told him I would not be home that early. So, I left work early, stopped at a home improvement store for the PVC pipe that was to be laid under the new sidewalk for later underground sprinkler installation, & arrived a few minutes before the concrete delivery. The concrete was poured, completely submerging the City's lateral clean-out. Before it set, the crew managed to sloppily scrape some away from it, but they ultimately left it barely visible. Should it ever be needed for a clean-out, it will be inaccessible, as it is essentially cemented shut. There is also a wide groove between the lid and the concrete, which will collect water/ice & likely lead to early spalling & surface breakdown. It was now Thursday afternoon; the concrete had been poured, but the City had not performed the 2nd inspection needed to complete the job. Nonetheless, Mr. Mickey pressured me uncomfortably for payment in full that day, as well as the morning of 3/4. I informed him that "job completion" meant a green tag or "completed" online status for the permit. He insisted with a lot of fast talk that I should pay him anyway, b/c that was how things worked. I contacted the City Inspector (& his supervisor) directly who refuted Mr. M's assertions, advising me to await final inspection, which would occur on or after 3/7. Fortunately, the job did meet the City's low expectations, the permit was completed on 3/7, & I mailed Mr. M a check for the full payment. UNFORTUNATELY, the job was huge disappointment. Having seen his work in the area, & having trusted his claims that he would perform the work as specified, Mr. M. cut corners on setting the forms & did not create the wide, semi-circular arc needed to relieve pressure on the parkway tree. Rather than relocating the sidewalk, as even the City plan specified, in order to make room for the tree, he opted instead to hack/crowd/pour on top of the tree base/roots in order to accommodate a largely straight sidewalk little changed from the original one being replaced. The sloppy work around the drain clean-out is both cosmetically & functionally sub-par. As such, having been charged twice the City's bid for a job no different from what the City would have performed was a rip-off. Being pressured to pay before work completion added insult to injury. Unfortunate & expensive outcome for me & for the tree at the heart of the job. I cannot recommend this contractor for this type of job.
Description of Work: Replace ~44 linear ft of sidewalk. Job included accommodation for the City's lateral sanitary drain clean-out &, more importantly, relocating the existing straight pavement in a semi-circle arc to make room for the trunk & base of a very large, specimen ash tree in the parkway. This was being done to reduce pressure on the tree's roots & trunk, which were being compressed by the existing concrete sidewalk.

Outstanding job. I received bids from several businesses but I just had this comfort feel from the first conversation and when I decided to use him, he was able to schedule me soon. Unfortunately the driveway from when the house was built was crumbling due to inferior concrete or bad conditions when poured. What we got from Stephen is a quality job that will last and look much better as it is also the entrance to the front of our house. The old driveway used house bricks to edge it and he located superior brick pavers that would match the house brick color. Stephen was involved or accessible throughout the entire job. I was also impressed with the workmanship of his crew; each one worked together seamlessly. Overall, it was a pleasant experience for what is a very messy job. Stephen is an example of an Angie's List search success.

Fabulous experience from start to finish. When I first talked with him over the phone, the owner, Steven Mickey, was very informative about what should be done in constructing a new driveway to minimize the risk of cracking. He has a no-nonsense, this-is-the-way-it-is attitude which I really appreciated. He told me exactly what to expect. We agreed on the scope of the work, he sent me a proposal by email which was simple and straightforward, and the work started shortly after I signed the proposal. It turned out that the prior contractor who had done my driveway had imbedded a sprinkler tube in the concrete, so that when Mickey Construction was excavating the old concrete, they hit the tube. Mickey promptly called a reliable plumber who repaired the problem so that the excavation could continue. The work was done quickly, and the end product looks beautiful.
Description of Work: My concrete driveway had cracked and looked awful for the second time in the 20+ years that I owned the home. I wanted to find a really good contractor this time, so I looked on Angie's list and chose Mickey Construction because of the many very favorable reviews. They proved to be very reliable.

They started with a mess left by another contractor who pulled up stakes when he hit the power line and skipped town. So Mickey Construction started with sort of a mess, but the old driveway had already been removed by the first contractor. Mickey Construction kept me informed of progress and was very willing to talk to me and explain the what and why of their process, keeping me informed of progress along the way. I trusted them implicitly and they did a good job from start to end and the driveway looks great.

I contacted Stephen Mickey for a quote on an expanded patio. Within three days, he was on site and provided a verbal proposal then, followed by a written proposal within one working day. Stephen was in constant contact with schedules... his communications with me, the customer, were amazing. Note that I actually delayed the project by two weeks by requesting that Stephen obtain a construction permit from the City of Allen, Texas. No problem... he handled it all in stride. On Monday (day 1), his crew showed up bright and early (before sun up) to prepare the new concrete site... removed dirt, position forms and install re-bar. At 11:30 a.m., the city inspector arrived (as planned) to approve the preparations. No problem - approved! At 12:30 p.m., the concrete truck showed up (as scheduled) to pour. By 3:30 pm, we had an expanded concrete patio! The next day (day 2), his crew again showed up bright and early to begin the flagstone install. What a job... it was just like a giant jigsaw puzzle! At nightfall, the crew left to return the next day. The next (day 3) morning, again bright and early, his crew returned to complete the flagstone installation. By 1:00 p.m., they were finished. Nice job! Day 4 was all about letting the mortar and flagstone dry completely. Day 5 included the application of two coats of sealer. Talk about the flagstone looking good! This highlighted the entire job. This project reflected the way all business should be conducted! Stephen did what he said he would do... when he said he would do it... and kept me informed along the way. One word comes to mind for Mickey Construction, Stephen Mickey and his crew: OUTSTANDING!

Stephen Mickey was very professional and easy to work with. His crews were on time and worked promptly throughout the day to finish pouring my driveway and front walkway. They would have been able to finish my sidewalk but the City of Dallas Inspector failed to show up to inspect the job site. Once he inspected the jobsite they poured the sidewalk within hours of the inspection. They completely cleaned up the residue concrete and materials and left my home as clean as they found it.
