I had a really bad experience with this company all around. I switched to them out of frustration with the local cable company. I almost immediately regretted my decision. First, they did a sloppy job putting the antenna on my roof, running the cable over my rain gutter. The power supply to the antenna went out in less than a month. I was paying $100 per month for what was supposed to be 10MBPS downstream. The speed only rarely approached that, usually it was less than half that. Often, I would get just 2 MBPS! The speed and connection were so unstable I had trouble installing Microsoft and security updates. When I complained about this I was told there was a problem with my access point on a tower, which they would repair. After a week with the same issues, I called them back. Still no repair. Turns out they don't own the tower and have to get the owners to give them access. When I asked when this might be, I was told as soon as possible. Another week passed. Not much is possible for Gtek. As an alternative solution, they suggested raising my antenna 30 ft and pointing it at another tower twice as far away. I declined. I also had VOIP phone service with them. It was worthless. Almost all my calls had intermittent drops and I ended up repeating things over and over. Completely useless. So I cancelled my service. After pointing out the above history, they were gracious enough to waive a good part of the early termination fee, which I appreciated. Now for the worst part. They sent a technician out to get the antenna. He caulked up the bolt holes and assured me I need not worry about leaks. Can you guess? Now my roof is leaking. I will have a roofing company repair it as I don't trust Gtek. It will cost at least $200. This was an expensive lesson and I owe Time Warner Cable an apology. Lessons for you: If you think that antenna bolted to your roof is a bad idea, it is. If you wonder about how their speed and reliability compares, see above. If cable is available for you, choose that. I can say that their tech support and accounting people were mostly polite and helpful, though some could be a little more professional. Update: I couldn't wait for them to send their own roofing person out, since water was actually leaking through the roof (when the roofer pulled back the damaged shingles, there was no caulk in the holes Gtek's antenna had made). I sent them a copy of the bill and unsurprisingly received no response. This review should give you enough information to make an informed decision about this company. My own opinion is that unless Gtek is your only choice, you'd be better off with another internet service provider.

Response from Gtek Computers and Wireless LLC
[Members Name], Our apologies for the bad experience you had with Gtek Computers and Wireless. We would like to compensate you for your roof if there has been any damage because of our equipment. Before we do, we would like to send a third party roofing company to your property to check for any damages. We have pictures from the tech that disconnected your equipment that shows we did seal the holes with industrial sealant on 7/28/2014, and per your request we sent another tech out on Saturday 8/2/2014 to reseal the same holes. We will call you to confirm a date and time with you, So we can send out the third party roofing company. Thank you, Gtek Computers and Wireless Team

The next day, G tek came to the home, cut down MY antenna mast to remove their directional antenna. The technician that performed the removal made no less than four cuts of the cat 5 cable to ruin any chance of reusing the existing cable and even went as far as burning the terminal fitting left on the cable the protruded from the ground. The Gtek worker threw my antenna mast over my fence where I found the pointed end stuck eight inches into my ground and the fat end of the mast resting on the fence. The tech also threw the cut pieces of cat 5 cable and one of the three stainless steel hose clamps over the fence and into my yard. The other two hose clamps were left in the grass in my neighbor's yard who is also a Gtek customer. All three (cut, not screwed open, so no chance of reusing these expensive parts) hose clamps were left in St. Augustine grass. My neighbor and I were lucky to find these clamps with our eyes and not our lawnmowers! My neighbor also confirmed that it was a Gtek vehicle parked on the street during the time when this all took place. Placed a call to Gtek, was placed on hold and passed around three times to Justin that stated at 4:35 pm, the best he could do is send out a tech the next morning because it was too late in the day. Justin also stated that Gtek purposely cuts old cable because customers complain about the unconnected cable trashing their yard. If they are so worried about customer satisfaction, why did they throw the "trash" back into my yard? I informed him that he had to do better than that, I needed someone, preferably him, to come see what his company had done to my property today. He told me he wouldn't come out, I told him my next call was to the San Patricio Co. Sheriff's Dept. That didn't change his mind. I called the sheriff and filed a criminal mischief complaint against Gtek. As stated before, I had planned to use Gtek as my ISP. I didn't move fast enough to sign up for their service. I am so glad I didn't! Their spiteful and unprofessional actions on-site and management's lackadaisical concern after the fact for the damage they created to my property makes it very easy to recommend to anyone in the 361....NEVER USE GTEK!!!! Ps. My Sprint/Netgear wireless antenna and router are working just fine!
Description of Work: I purchased a home in rural San Patricio County and planned to use Gtek as my internet service provider as the previous residents of the home had done before. I had not made a purchase of their services upon closing the home purchase deal on 23 June.

I am so sad that I can't recommend this service. I want, so, so much, to like Gtek. Besides ongoing "speed" issues, or even "reliability" issues, we frequently aren't able to access ordinary websites. Back when my mother paid for it, I phoned Gtek more than once to ask why I couldn't access certain major websites like Tumblr -- I had to access those sites through "proxy server" services, as if I straight-up lived in China -- and I was always always told I was "mistaken," that the ISP had no proxy problems. The "proxy" problem has continued: A few years later -- earlier this spring, actually, and for an entire week -- I wasn't able to connect to either Microsoft Update or Adobe Reader. When I finally phoned Gtek, the person on the line insinuated that I understood neither how to use Windows nor the Internet. (I ended up updating my brand-new PC, drivers and all, through Tor, of all things, which has most famously been used by Edward Snowden. Great! Thanks!) At that time, Gtek's staffer's insinuations struck me as some gall, since I am a Bay Area tech writer, transplanted to Texas, fairly well-versed in PCs and networks, and so I do not feel too far out of my depth. Furthermore, for a few days in December 2012, I was not able to send my overdue tech article to the New York Times: At that time I phoned Gtek and wailed. Of course I finally sucked it up and headed to the local Starbucks; meanwhile Gtek eventually "repaired" my home antenna. On that: Gtek has repeatedly moved or "repaired" its antenna along our roof, maybe five times or more within half as many years, and this expensive process has never resulted in better service. (We are currently paying for Platinum, but we have never even once enjoyed commensurate speeds.) As a tech writer with a programmer-husband -- both of us "telecommutes" -- I can tell you our Internet service very frequently "bottoms out," especially when we are using it to (ostensibly) communicate with our colleagues. Our lack of stable Internet in the home is, for us, an ongoing professional embarrassment. I'm sure that Gtek assumes the "average customer" doesn't "need" Internet, or that we won't "notice" when Gtek's service perpetually goes missing. When we do notice, the young men answering Gtek's phones are apparently trained to tell irate 30-something women that their new PCs with clean hard drives are virus-riddled and may require reinstallation. But the very worst of it is, my husband recently checked the DNS and confirmed that Gtek is simply Time Warner Cable, transmitted via radio antenna. I must assume we've had all the same connection problems other area folks have enjoyed -- just more slowly, and possibly with more intellectual emasculation on the phone. After being hateful lifelong city-dwelling Comcast subscribers -- he, in San Francisco, I, in Chicago -- we are reluctantly switching to Time Warner. He and I both are extremely suspicious of big-name Internet providers. But Gtek is supposed to give us 15 Mbps download -- we average 9, and at the time of this writing, it's actually 1.8 -- while Time Warner, for half the price, offers 50 Mbps. We have now chosen to go ahead and "future-proof" our home and install cable, which -- bless my parents for trying to give me and my career usable Internet -- this house has never had. I owe Gtek an additional star because, after both my parents died and I phoned to change the account to my name, the woman on the line apologized because she was friends with my mother. We really, really wanted to be fans of Gtek and keep their service, but we literally can't think of a single reason.
Description of Work: For the last five years or so, this Internet Service Provider ("ISP") has repeatedly insulted my intellect and character I wanted to like them, so much, and it was so kind of my parents to want to have at-home Internet that I potentially could use for work. But -- and I do not say this lightly -- this ISP is worthless. After eight months of trying, my beleaguered husband has begged us to move on to Time Warner. We have a cable guy scheduled to install next week.

We've used Gtek for our internet service for a while now, and recently upgraded our service to accommodate increased speeds for our work. As far as customer service for billing and getting the new installation scheduled, Gtek is by far the most personable and responsive internet provider I have ever worked with. We were able to talk to their representatives almost immediately, and had an appointment scheduled for the next day. Matt performed the new installation, aiming a dish at a closer antenna, performing all of the wiring, and testing to make sure we had the connection speeds we were paying for. However, support for the connection itself leaves something to be desired. We've had several cases where sites we've needed to access for updating software have been blocked by their servers, and have had to use proxies for things as routine as updating system drivers. Those issues accounted for, it is still the best service in the area.

Had a computer that was infected with a virus. The Tech guy I spoke with wasn't the nicest or most professional. Have ever seen. Felt like he talked down to me while explaining what could be the problem. I will admit I don't know everythng but did he really have to treat me like I was a small child. He said he would know somethng within 24 hours and would let us know. At about 27 hours and no word, plus it was a Friday afternoon and I really wanted to know before the weekend I made the call to find out they had discovered a virus it would be ready in about an hour. That part was very prompt just hate when someone tells me they will call and don't . Also somethng else ths guy did was try to up sell me on his particular brand of virus protection. Instead of telling me how good his stuff was, he was bad mouthing everythng else out there. Just very unprofessional!
