The technician arrived on time; he took care of each of the system's needs; and he showed me each of the system's problems. He offered to install a filter, but he warned me that his filter would be twice as expensive as Lowes or Home Depot. He left duct tape so that I could seal the filter doors after I installed the filter, and he didn't even charge me for the small amount of freon he added.
Description of Work: The Total Air Conditioning and Heating technician came to our new home for a seasonal check-up of the air conditioning. We used a coupon from Angie's List. The technician discovered five problems: 1) the unit was missing the air filter (?); 2) the evaporator coil needed cleaning (~$300 and another service call); 3) the doors on the furnace were reversed (?); 4) the outdoor unit needed cleaning, and 5) the system needed a small amount of freon.

He arrived on time and was very professional. The outside unit was checked and cleaned. Then he went into the attic to check that unit. When completed is work, he told me of the condition of my system. Also, he made some suggestion on the upkeep of my system and left. I was completely satisfied with the service.

The Technician arrived on time and was extremely knowledgable and very professional. I have white carpet and from time to time service people that have come to the house don't use protective footwear this company does, I really like that. He was extremely thorough and explained everything he did and the results. I have a couple of items that can be addressed later, he didn't pressure me to get anything done that day but did let me know that the air conditioner is aging and can use a couple of items to keep it running well. He did quote prices for the items indicated and I felt that they were very reasonable. If I have airconditioning needs in the future I do intend to call them back.
Description of Work: This was an air conditioner check up that I took advantage of through the "Big Deals" that are periodically offered.

The service went very well. In addition to performing the above services, he diagnosed why the outside unit wouldn't power on by running a wire from it to the thermostat to verify the existing wire had been cut or chewed through (no additional cost). He provided a quote to run a new wire which I declined.

get my a/c etc checked every spring. Total air had a special for $49 and I took advantage of it. My A/c unit is 32 years old and still running pretty well. The tech came out at the correct time and explained everything he was going to do. I couldn't believe all he did etc. he explained a great deal more then anyone I had out prior and did a more complete job then any company i had prior..He checked everything including things that prior techs never checked before. Because he did so well. I am having a sales rep look at what it would take to go to a new unit. I figure the cost of electricity savings could well make it worth while with a more up to date unit. Thank you Derek and Total AC/H.

I have used Total Heating and Air for previous AC repairs and had purchased an outside unit through them 10 years before. Last summer my AC had gone out and I called them and the man who came out told me I needed a new compressor, duct work, and heater. I got 2 other estimates so that I could compare. The other two also said I needed a new system and duct work. The bottom line is this: Total Heating and Air gave the highest estimate and was going to provide me a builder grade unit. The other two estimates I received were close in total cost, but included more for the money, and one company's pricing included a better unit with higher seer than Total. Only one company -Avery Air - also did a thorough check of my home, not just inside, but around the entire house, which Total Heating and Air did not do. Overall, after being a customer with Total Heating and Air for over 10 years, I was disappointed to say the least.
Description of Work: DO research about HVAC - what SEER means, types of units When being told you need a whole new system, DO see if the technician does a thorough check inside and outside the home. Ashrae.org has a consumer section where you can get great information.

Response from Total Air & Heat Co
I love Angie's List...but like all of us we have our flaws. This review is a prime example. We have no record of this review being our customer, nor do we service Argyle, TX. We have multiple tracking systems, so we know this customer and address is one we have never been to! In fact...I suspect this review is from another HVAC company who is now bankrupt. I requested the review be removed, but because the member did not respond back to Angie's List the review stays posted. At least I have the opportunity to respond to the feedback. I urge you to review the feedback and look at the wording, it's clearly from someone with knowledge of A/C and Heat and even suggests you to go to ASHRAE for info, that organization is primarily for commercial a/c and heat contractors and manufacturers and is not consumer oriented. The review also mentions a competitor who went of of business...Avery Air went bankrupt!!!!! Last but not least, the reviews says we skipped some steps, not true we have a written process for our team to follow with required forms to submit...but we were never there! Angie's List...I urge you to review your processes, when a review like this is clearly bogus, Remove It! Best Regards, Steve Lauten President Total Air & Heat Co.

Incredible job overall. I have had the pleasure of working twice with Total's representative Josh McKenney. The first was back in the summer of 2010 when we called on Total to fix a 14 year old Carrier A/C unit that was original to the house. Josh spent about 2 hours evaluating our two systems and gave us three separate proposals to fit our budget. We opted to go with a simpler fix by just replacing a capacitor. Flash forward to June 2012 when the unit died for good. We called Josh in again after getting two proposals from other highly rated Angie's List HVAC providers. Again Josh gave us three options. He also recommended important repairs to corrected the horrible duct work put in by the sub-contractor when we built our home in 1996. To make things even better, Josh told us about a zero-financing special available through Home Depot. The install went with just one hitch. There was a manufacturer's defect in the first A/C unit. This was swapped out and the system was up and running by the end of the day. The technicians were experienced, professional, and cleaned up wherever they might have made a mess. We opted to go with a moderately priced Trane 14 Seer System. I delayed my review because I wanted to test both the A/C and Heating units. After nearly nine months they have operated flawlessly and I have definitely noticed a reduction in both my electric and gas bills. Our second heating unit is due for replacement and we will definitely call on Total Air and Heat to perform the work.
Description of Work: Complete air conditioning and heating unit swap-out and changes to duct-work to allow for correction of builder installation errors.

The master bedroom and bath have always been colder in the Winter and hotter in the Summer than the rest of the house. I have lived with condition this since 1987 and finally decided to see if it could be improved. Total Air had an “A” rating on Angie’s List and also came highly recommended by our next door neighbor, so we called them. Chad came out on Friday, 1/18, and determine there was not enough air flow into the bedroom. After examining the duct system in the attic he determined that part of the reason was that the duct supplying the master bed & bath was split into two smaller ducts at a "Y", with one going to the bedroom and the other to the bath. He suggested that individual runs should be installed, with a 9" duct going to the bedroom and a smaller (7" I think) to the bathroom. He also indicated that dampers would be installed into three ducts so we would be able to adjust the air flow as needed. He said he couldn’t guarantee that this would entirely fix the problem but it would be an improvement to what we now have. He was able to schedule the installation on Monday, 1/21, at 8:30AM. On Monday the installers arrived right on time. (Unfortunately I have forgotten their names.) Both were pleasant and professional and they gave me the feeling that they know what they’re doing. We went to the attic and they explained in detail exactly what they were going to do. The floor was covered from the front door, up the stairs and to the ladder entry to the attic to protect the carpeting. Work was completed in about 1 1/2 hours. They had me accompany them into the attic to examine the installation and so they could explain to me how to adjust the dampers. During the next two days I experienced more air flow into the bedroom than ever before, to the point that some of the air flow had to be close off! I had some trouble moving the damper so I called Total Air and explained the problem I was having. I expected that they would be here in one or two days, but they scheduled someone the same day. The tech arrived in 2 hours and fixed the problem. They did a great job, from identifying the problem to fixing it. Can’t wait to experience a much cooler bedroom this Summer! The price was well worth the results.
Description of Work: Installed two air ducts to the upstairs master bedroom and master bathroom and installed dampers to adjust the airflow as needed.

Our air conditioner was not cooling, although the air as blowing. When I contacted Total Air and Heat, they were really busy as was my schedule. But they worked hard to schedule us as soon as possible. It took just one extra day before we could be on the schedule and get the problem fixed. The receptionist was professional, compassionate and very customer service oriented. When Total Air & Heat arrived, they were on time and got right to work. I was very impressed with the service pro's knowledge. He showed me where the wiring to our outdoor unit had been improperly done by the last company we had used, and took the time to redo that neatly and professionally. He diagnosed the problem as the result of a short in the wiring. Additionally, the fan motor had gone out. He called the provider of the necessary part, and because there were no customers waiting for service at that time, rather than having to go to another job he was able to go and pick up the part and return to finish the job. **Had he had to leave our job to go service another customer, our unit would not have been repaired the same day and the rating would be different. It did open our eyes quite a bit...and now we know to ask all.service pros if all work will be completed the same day.** (He did not have to do so, but was kind enough to go out of his way and get the part and install it that afternoon, so I give him excellent marks for that!**) The thought of going without air conditioning for yet another day was chilling (pun intended). I feel we got lucky that he was able to go pick up the necessary part and return in about an hour-and-a-half to complete our job. Had he not done that we likely would have been without cool air that day PLUS another service pro would have been assigned to install the part on another day. I was not comfortable with the thought of 2 different service people working on my air conditioing unit on two separate days...and was thankful he finished the job in one day. As do believe our service pro went above and beyond to get the work done and do it correctly. And our air conditioner has worked well ever since.
Description of Work: Check air conditioner unit to determine reason for it not producing cool air. Analyzed problem. Noted short in wiring. Repaired wiring. Redid the wiring that was poorly configured by former service company Replaced fan motor. Added freon.

Tino and the crew arrived in a timely manner, got started around 9:00 A.M. and stopped only for lunch. I was impressed with their knowledge. They were more than happy to answer any questions I might or explain where they were the installation. A big plus is that they are all employees of Total Air and not a sub-contractor. They removed all the duct work from the attic. That old nasty duct work was bagged before it was brought down out of the attic. They brought the remainder of the a/c unit out in pieces. The crew took the new duct work up first and started the duct work install. As they did the installation of the duct work, other parts of the crew and began to take the new pieces into the house and up into the attic to start the assembly of the new unit. Meanwhile, outside, the old condenser unit was removed as was the old slab. Due to the size of the new unit, i had to have a large concrete slab. Total keep those precast slabs on hand, so there is no waiting for the pouring of concrete and letting it set up. Because I added a two stage system, I also had to have a larger line return line. They ran that line up side my house and into the attic. They then covered the new lines to prevent exposure to the outside. They added three new, much larger returns than what I had. They moved them to the ceiling and off the floor. The thought process was, the up areas is where the hot air will be. They brought everything up to code, including changing some electrical parts out. They completed their assembly and installation of the entire new unit with duct work in about 10 hours. They had all departed by around 7:00 in the evening. A week later, the inspector from the city of Plano came by and was highly complimentary on their installation, claiming it as the best he had seen. The inspector also went on to state that he could not tell them that in person , since I guess compliments from the permitting staff were not allowed, but I am including his remarks here. All in all, I was very please with the installation and absolutely recommend them. Sure, I could have gone with a cheaper system or a company not from Plano, but this was the company and the product I felt comfortable with.
Description of Work: I live in a 2,350 sf house. I had the A/C (21 years old), heater (20 years old) and duct work (28 years old - original duct work!) replaced. The return grills were moved from the floor to high up returns. I took bids from ten (10) different contractors. The bids ranged from $13,000 to $18,005. After reviewing offers from the various bidders which included all the well known brands, I went with the local company here in Plano, Total Air Conditioning & Heating. The Service Representative, Mr. David Larson, a very knowledgeable employee, provided me with a printed list of every item that would be utilized in the replacement process. He discussed the difference in duct work (R-8 for supply and R-6 for returns), why the duct work is suspended instead of laid on top of the rafters, as well as the reason for moving the returns from the floor to the ceilings. I had three returns installed high up, either in the ceiling or on a high place in the wall. The price quoted of $16, 752 is exactly what I paid for upon completion AND acceptance of the work. I went with a Trane XR-15 Two stage Air Conditoner(http://trane.com/Residential/Products/Air-Conditioners/XR15-Air-Conditioners) and the XV-80 (http://trane.com/Residential/Products/Gas-Furnaces/XV80-Gas-Furnaces). The XR-15 had the minimum SEER rating (Up to SEER 17.0 per the brochure) I was looking for .I now have the 4" Honeywell Media Air Cleaner filtering system (https://customer.honeywell.com/resources/techlit/TechLitDocuments/50-0000s/50-9091.pdf) , as opposed to the 1" monthly replace filter. The entire system was mastic sealed, so between the Honeywell filter and the mastic seal, I expect a significant improvement in the reduction of dust in my house. .

Initially they were good. They were timely and polite. However when they came to recheck the unit they said all was well even though they new the house was warm. They tried to sell me a new thermostat saying that would fix the problem, but the problem was not the thermostat. After their frustration level got to a certain point they would not return my calls. Only after a plumber asked them to call him so he could explain the problem would they respond to my need.

This house is over 50 years old and had an issue with plumbing beyond our control. There was not a problem with our installation, the problem was with her hub drain which was clogged up. The problem showed up after our install because the new unit was removing a lot of humidity...her old drain line could not keep up. The plumber did not have the tools necessary to fix the problem (you would think they would) so we went back out and fixed the problem at no charge. Her thermostat was a very old mercury bulb that has toxic waste (mercury) in it and it was not accurate. We keep logs of all calls we get and we have not ever ignored a call from her. Her new unit is working great and we appreciate her business! Best Regards, Steve Lauten Owner

On 7/14/2012 at about 2 A.M. we noticed the A/C fan was not running but the outside unit was running and had been for a long time. In the morning I called for help and the Total office employee's asked if this is the only A/C unit cooling the house, which it is. So she then set up an appointment for 1P.M.. The tech was here on time and found a swellen capacitor within about 5 minutes. He replaced the capacitor and checked my coolent. The unit is cooling correctly now and the tech was finished and gone in about half an hour.

I bought my system from them 10-12 years ago and they come out every six months. I am quite pleased with them. I have a contract with them for 3 years. I would trust them for sure. I used the same guy that came all the time but he left and they have another guy that I getting used to and it’s the second year. I like their consistency. I live alone and I want to know who comes to my house and they work with you and things like that and that is really good. I would trust them. If you got any questions you can ask them and if you didn’t like the answer from the service man you can call the main office and they will switch and the communication is very good there. I am happy with the price, and I don’t have anything to compare it with. I want it to be a little less and I don’t know what anybody else charges.
