Very satisfied with the service and price. They show up on time and don't try to gig you on extras.
Description of Work: We first got to know Total when we hired them to install a new central HVAC system in our home in Highland Park built in 1929 that had window units and space heaters. We could not have had a better installation. That was 10 years ago. Two years later, we hired them again to replace an old HVAC unit in a home we purchased in N. Dallas built in 1972. They did an excellent job and have done our biannual service ever since.

One had caused a breaker to be tripped so I wanted them thoroughly checked out. This brings up a recurring question for me. The reason that I call company's for various service calls is that most of the time I have little knowledge of how any of these work. In the past I have sometimes felt that a service person came out, checked a few things and whisked off a little dust and called it done. My previous experiences with this company have been mostly good so I have to trust that what should have been done was completely done. The service person was trying to turn the outside power switch back on after service and it didn't work. I have learned to ask to look at the item and did see some melted plastic in the box. The service man surmised that this might have been part of the breaker problem. Not so, since it tripped again a couple of weeks later. A $150 call ended up becoming a $600 call (partly because I chose to lump a winter check of my units in with this call to save a little money). This service call was better than one that had caused me to stop using this company several years ago when the service person completely missed that the ducting had come loose very near one ac unit and I had been air conditioning my attic.
Description of Work: This was a service call for two ac units. Replaced an outdoor breaker switch for one unit.

We used Total Air & Heat in 2008 and were very pleased with our technician, Larry. We asked for Larry again, but he wasn't available so another technician came out - Carl. This time the upstairs compressor was not turning on. He said we needed a part, which he had in his truck. He quickly replaced the broken part and the unit is working great again. They are always punctual, polite, and honest.
Description of Work: Upstairs a/c wasn't working. Compressor wasn't coming on.

After a bad experience with another company, I called several companies. FYI, there are plenty of companies on Angie's list that do not have experience with ceiling mount units. This company did - even the woman who answered the phone seemed to know everything about it (what a relief!). On the first visit, the technician fixed the leak - something the previous company was unable to do. He also said that the unit had not been mounted and that it needed to be or it would come through the ceiling one day (to give the previous company their due, they also said this - I just didn't have a lot of faith in them for a host of reasons). The cost of the first visit was reasonable. The same technician and one other came back a week later with equipment to properly mount the unit. This took several hours and seemed like a difficult job. It cost a lot of money, but I had no choice and I feel pretty confident that it was done right. After the job was done, they cleaned up my floor really well. THANK YOU for a job well done. UPDATE in October 2010. SEVERAL months after the work described above was done, there was a slight leak from the unit. I asked Total to come back since I had paid quite a bit of money for the initial work done and thought the problem had been fully resolved. The first technician actually worsened the situation, but clearly did his best. After I reported the increased leaking, Total immediately arranged for someone else to come out. This professional furthered balanced the unit and then indicated that he would like to do additional sealing (that's probably the wrong term), but that he would have to come back with someone else to do that - which he did. Throughout this process, Total was really helpful and transparent in terms of what they were doing and why - including the woman with whom I spoke on the phone. She even went through the names of their technicians for me and explained why the person who did the follow up work was being selected - what a breath of fresh air to actually be treated like an intelligent consumer and participant in the process. It's been a VERY long time since I received this kind of service in Dallas. Thank you again - no problems since the follow up work was done. All done at no additional charge.
Description of Work: I had a leaking air conditioner unit that was a ceiling mount. The leak was ruining a bathroom that had just been remodeled. I had a bad experience with another company that actually had a high rating on Angie's list - this experience was the exact opposite. I paid a lot, but feel that the end result was worth it.

They did an outstanding job. They found the parts for our AC and it was under warranty. They checked everything out. They came out as soon as one of their technicians was available. So I thought that it was great and they were really good. They also gave us some helpful information about how the unit works and what to do in order to protect it. So I learnt a lot from them and we did get a lot of education from them. I didn’t have to pay them anything since there was an extended warranty and they asked me about it right away. They were going to charge me $70 for coming out. Then they called me back about a week later to tell me that they would credit me back. I was perfectly happy spending $70 for replacing the motors on the AC unit. I thought that it was reasonable. They deserve good ratings and I would definitely use their services in the future too.

There was some initial confusion about what work was to be done when the technicians thought they were finished based on the direction they received from the dispatcher, but the company's reps were on top of things as soon as I posed the question about what should be expected when the project was complete. The rep who originally came to our house to provide the quote, Justin Lauten, was extraordinarily professional, prompt and knowledgeable. When there was a question about the work that was to be completed, Mark from the office called me immediately and assured me that all that I had anticipated would be done. Finally, Lenny the actual technician and his partner could not have been more polite, accommodating and clean. From a cosmetic standpoint, they did a great job cutting the vent covers off where a knife was needed to separate them from the wall (had been painted over). When they left it was like they had never been there. They showed me everything they did, and I was confident that every detail had been attended to. I will absolutely use Total Air for my HVAC needs going forward.
Description of Work: Had all of the venting systems for 2 HVAC units sealed with mastic. Technicians sealed the flexible duct work to the plenums as well as to the vents coming into each room of the house.

They diagnosed the problem in only about 10 minutes as a failed ignitor and charged $70, which seemed reasonable for a service call. However the reason for the poor rating is: 1) They would not apply this fee to the work of replacing the ignitor which is a common practice for other HVAC companies. There was no extra trip involved, the serviceman said he had the part on his truck. 2) If they wanted to charge ala carte for diagnosing the problem and fixing it during the same visit I could live with it if the price was reasonable. However total amount would have been $471 ($70 for finding the problem and $401 for replacing the ignitor). The serviceman said it would take him about 15 minutes to replace the part already on his truck, so I paid $70 for the first ten minutes and was asked to pay another $401 for the remaining 15 minutes + the cost of the part. I almost paid because I am not a handyman type at all and gladly place value on the skills of a professional. However even with my lack of skill I paid $33 for the part locally and installed it myself in about 30 minutes. I gladly pay professionals for their time and I would have gladly paid $150/hour + trip charges + 300% markup on parts - but this company wanted more. With those rates I don't think it's too much to ask that the diagnostic fee would be applied to the work to be done since it was on the same trip with parts already on hand.
Description of Work: The service performed was to diagnose the cause of a furnace that had stopped working.

Response from Total Air & Heat Co
Wow-Let's review the facts here. Everyone should know you missed something, I think Enron Accounting was used: According to you: We got an "A" for Punctuality and a "A" for Responsiveness, plus a "B" for Quality, but a "F" for price? Let me make sure I understand this: We come out and diagnose your problem correctly. We are Responsive to your needs, we are Punctual, and provide a Quality diagnosis using an employee who has many years of training, passed very tough back ground checks, is fully insured, and is safe to allow into your home. We have invested over $35,000 dollars in the truck and inventory that came to your home. In addition we carry the highest air conditioning contractor's license available in Texas, carry $1,000,000 dollars in liability insurance and $1,000,000 in umbrella coverage, have been in business since 1957, been voted the Best Heat and Air Contractor in Collin County 14 times. Then you go buy the parts yourself for $33.00???????????????? That's below my cost for the part. I don't know what type of part you used? Is it safe? We use only OEM approved parts to make sure we don't void the UL safety rating. Personally-I can understand the repair cost is expensive. I face that all the time when I go to my doctor. However I don't go to my doctor and have him tell me what's wrong and then go try to fix "me" myself, nor do I go to an automotive mechanic, or a plumber, an electrician, or any other professional and have them diagnose the problem then decide I know more about their costs and overhead and what takes to stay in business over 50 years and dictate to them what I should be charged???? You really don't mean that do you? I can't imagine replacing a part on a heater myself and risking my family's health and safety if I did not know anything about it? I respect the fact you took the knowledge we gave you and fixed it yourself. However.... does it make any sense to post a price issue like this? There is no Benchmark on which to compare it! You have no knowledge of what it takes for us to stay in business. Over 80% of all A/C & Heat Contractors fail in their 1st 5 years in business, I wonder why? You did not compare us to another A/C & Heat Company and what they would charge: you compared us to a part of unknown origin, with no warranty, that may or may not be compatible with your system. Just because it works does not make it the correct part. My point is: Nobody is getting rich in the A/C & Heat business. We do our best to provide the best service possible, at an honest and fair price. and treat our customers with integrity. We have done that for over 50 years and we plan to do it for 50 years more! Our reputation in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area speaks for itself. In closing, I wish you nothing but the best of luck in your "self repair". I urge you to pay a professional to make sure the repair you made was correct, and the part used was correct. Steve Lauten President Total Air & Heat Co.

I called this company when my downstairs heat wasn't turning on. They made an appointment very quickly and quoted $70.00 for the service call. The tech did not give me the hour's notice that I was expecting, but he did come in the time frame I was quoted. I explained that the heat wasn't coming on even though the thermostat said the temperature was below the setting. The tech went into the attic for short while, came out and started telling me that some things weren't "technically correct" with the unit, but there was nothing wrong or broken. While he was talking the heat started downstairs and he realized that he had checked the Upstairs unit, not the downstairs unit that I had called about. Once again, he went into the attic for short while. When he came out, he said there was nothing wrong with that unit either and that my problem must be with the thermostat. For this I was charged $135.00, which he was careful to explain did NOT include the time he spent checking the wrong unit. If I had known I needed to time his work to avoid additional charges, I would have done so.

Response from Total Air & Heat Co
We have attempted to contact this customer multiple times with no response from her. To be honest....we are very surprised anything was said about arrival time because we got there in less than 1 hour from the time she called! In regards to the price we charged. It's very simple...$70.00 diagnostic fee which covers up to 30 minutes of time after we arrive, then we charge by the 1/4 hour. All of this is explained in advance when we schedule the call. Our tech did look at the wrong furnace initially, it was completely check out for No Charge! When we arrived at this home we found the furnace operating normally; we gave the customer the option of attempting to find the problem or to come back at another time. Sometimes it's tough to catch a intermittent problem. In this case we determined her thermostat was acting up, and not maintaining set point. As already stated we want this customer to be happy, but we can't get any response from her. Best Regards, Steve Lauten President Total Air & Heat Co.

My home's original unit always worked poorly and finally gave out at 7:00 PM. Based on their high rating on Angie's List, I made an appointment with Total Air and Heat for 7:30 AM the next morning to get an inspection and proposal. The sales tech was very prompt. By noon the work was started. They made a very professional installation and left the attic nicer than they found it. The Trane unit they installed is much quieter and has a variable speed fan that warms the house without blowing as much as previous unit.

The responses to our requests were prompt, and the sales person seemed quite professional and well equipped. The technician could at best be described as acceptable, though his manner could have been more personable. The problem occurred after we followed due diligence in obtaining additional estimates from other providers. A second, unaffiliated service company did not even inspect the unit to verify Total's conclusions before giving an estimate. But a third, independent service person who was also called to inspect the unit and give an estimate determined that there was actually nothing wrong with the functioning of either the gas valve or the heat exchanger. He spent several minutes looking through the system, explaining to me what he saw and thoroughly answering my questions, then proceeded to test and finally start the system - with no problems in performance of the system whatsoever!! The only thing wrong with our system is that it is an older (but very well made) unit that is a bit difficult to start after being idle for a few months. If we had not persisted in obtaining additional opinions we could have ended up spending thousands of dollars that we cannot really afford at this time. We will never do business with Total Heating & Air Conditioning again. Follow up: The experience with this technician, though resulting in the unfortunate news that our furnace is in fact beginning to fail, was completely satisfying. He was very patient and thorough, answering every question that I had and carefully explaining what he found as he proceeded with the examination. He was very personable and helpful, and extremely thorough in his examination. When he was finished he cleaned up the work area and was very careful to vacuum off his clothes before coming down out of the attic. He then very patiently explained everything that he found to my partner, and took all the time that was needed to answer any additional questions. He was quite helpful and we feel much better prepared to make a decision about our next steps. Total Heat & Air has responded very satisfactorily in remedying our prior negative experience, and might be receiving additional business from us, possibly in the very near future.
Description of Work: A technician came to our home to inspect our furnace, which we had difficulty lighting. The technician arrived at the appointed time and indicated that the gas valve was bad and that there was a crack in the heat exchanger. He contacted the office to arrange for a sales person to come out and give an estimate on replacement of the furnace. The sales person arrived close to the indicated time and gave estimates on the replacement of the unit. Follow up: In response to a much less than satisfactory experience with a different technician from this company, they sent another technician who conducted a thorough evaluation of our furnace involving a nearly complete disassembly of the unit in order to determine if the very old heat exchanger is indeed leaking, and a thorough explanation of what he found.

We appreciate the updated report from this Angie's List member. We have no idea who the "3rd Independent Contractor" is that said this furnace is safe to operate. After seeing the initial feedback we were compelled to set the story straight and confirm this furnace is unsafe to operate. We took a special video camera to the home and used a video scope to confirm the heat exchanger had multiple areas where the heat exchanger has issues. In addition we used a carbon monoxide meter and showed the customer that indeed the heat exchanger was leaking carbon monoxide into the home. We did all of these additional tests at no charge so that we could confirm our original diagnosis was correct and the furnace needs to be replaced. We appreciate the trust that Angie's List Members has when they choose us as their A/C & Heat Contractor. Best Regards, Steve Lauten President Total Air & Heat Co.

(I noted final cost as higher than original estimate because of the additional duct work that had to be added as noted below in this story. All costs were exactly as quoted.) Our upstairs unit was out of refrigerant, this wasn't unexpected. We called Total Air because the last service tech to fill the unit was very professional and informative. The new one was also very professional and helpful. He refilled the refrigerant and checked for a leak (on his advice and our request). There was a leak in the coil. We also had a drain line for another unit that has repeatedly become clogged (the last couple of times it was "cleared", it became clogged within a day. We were told by the last person to clear it that it wasn't adequately sloped and that person pointed out that we didn't have drain pans. We asked the technician from Total Air about getting the drain line resloped and a drain pan installed. He looked at the system said yes they could do that, but a salesman would need to come make a bid on the work. Also he noted that our furnace was very old and was single speed. He recommended upgrading it. The sales person (Richard Britt) came out. This is where our experience went from wonderful to not so great. The salesman would not answer my questions directly regardless of how I reworded them. He kept lapsing into sales talk "I've been in this business for over 20 years...", "I know what I'm talking about...", etc. etc. He worked up a bid on replacing the leaking coil (and installing a drain pan) on the first unit and a couple of bids on the second (re-run drainline and install drain pan, re-run drainline, install pan and new furnace...) We agreed that the company would do the following: Replace the coil and return plenum, and add a drain pan on the first unit. Replace coil and return plenum, add drain pan, correct slope of drain line (and clear drain line), and upgrade furnace on second unit. The Installation team was scheduled. They arrived in a timely manner, did very good work and answered all my questions. The lead of the installation team checked the drain line several times. The new furnace was too powerful for the existing duct work, so there was dripping into the pan (the sales person had not noticed this because he had estimated the size of the existing supply plenum rather than measuring it. The sales person returned and gave us a quote (and damaged our attic access door in the process) on adding two ducts with registers to accomodate the extra air. The install team came out and did an excellent job on the installation. (I plan to have the rest of our duct work redone by them sometime in the future because I know there is a lot of nice cold air leaking into the attic right now!) I will defiinitely call them again for future work on our HVACs, BUT I will DEFINITELY request a different sales person.
Description of Work: Refilled refrigerant on one unit and checked for leak in coil. Replaced two coils and return plenums, replaced one furnace, cleared one drain line that was not adequately sloped. Corrected drain slope and installed two drain pans. Added new ducts and registers.

The technician was professional and courteous. He explained that the unit was fine and that only the filter needed replacing. I called them back two weeks later and was told I would have to pay a new trip charge which I did not think was fair since the solution the technician had proposed did not work.

Response from Total Air & Heat Co
If you were to rely solely on the feedback left by this Angie’s List member it would appear we had done something wrong. That could not be further from the truth! As quoted by the member: “ They provided same day response to a rental property” and “The technician was professional and courteous. He explained that the unit was fine and that only the filter needed replacing.” Here are the facts: The air filter was extremely dirty, enough to cause the system to not cool properly. We checked the a/c system vital signs and could find nothing wrong other than the dirty air filter. The system was working properly when we left the home, it worked fine for 2 weeks and we had no calls from the property owner during that timeframe. All we charged for was a $70.00 ( we gave a $10.00 off coupon for Angie’s List) service call that covers 30 minutes of time. We were at this home for at least 30 minutes. There is no warranty for changing an air filter. The best comparison is if you go to the doctor because your feet hurt and he finds your shoes are too small and tells you to change your shoes. Then 2 weeks later your feet still hurt does the doctor look at your feet for free or charge you another office visit? This complaint has no merit! We performed everything we could possibly do at the time and the system worked for 2 weeks. All we requested was to be paid to come back out to the home to cover our travels costs, and labor. We told the customer we would charge him another service call unless our technician missed something the first time we were there. The customer claims “I called them back two weeks later and was told I would have to pay a new trip charge which I did not think was fair since the solution the technician had proposed did not work.” The facts are we did not propose any work because the only thing wrong was a clogged air filter. We have all the pressures and temperatures listed on the service ticket, on the ticket it clearly states: “Nothing wrong, just dirty filter”, there was no other solution suggested. It is our opinion we did everything we could do at the time, there was no repair made therefore nothing to warranty. However we did offer to come back out and if we missed something it would be free, otherwise it would be chargeable……the customer declined

My husband and I were looking into a specific unit and after finding Total Air & Heat Company on Angie's List we called them up to ask about getting an estimate for the installation. He came out and took the time to explain what we needed and how much it would cost. After we decided to go with them they set an appointment for about a week later and three guys came out to do the installation. They spent about three hours at my home and they did a fantastic job. The entire project went very well.
Description of Work: Total Air & Heat Company came out to install a new air cleaning unit.

I originally contracted with this company in fall 2008 to perform routine semi-annual inspection and service of our HVAC system. In the process of servicing the system this spring they discovered a problem wiht the interface between a blower unti and the duct work. This was a pre-existing condition, resulting from a poor initial installation. I asked for an estimate to correct the problem, and got one other estimate from another company. The bid from Total Air was significantly less. They performed the work in a completely satisfactory way. The routine semiannual service is also excellent. Their workers are clean, neat, and take extra care to avoid making a mess while they work. They are well-trained and very professional.
Description of Work: Repair duct work. (Also routine semi-annual service.)

Most professional crew! Put down padding to not scratch my wood flooring/furniture during removal and installation. Were quick and efficient and didn't leave me without air conditioning too long. Very neat and clean and cleaned up after themselves.
Description of Work: Replaced builder grade a/c heating unit with 16 SEER 2 stage unit in 11 year old house. Replaced thermostat with programable one. Put in Honewell F100 filter system.

One of our two A/C units was not cooling. Total Heat & Air came on very short notice on a Friday evening. They did not charge a premium for this I was told. They fixed the A/C unit by replacing an electric relay panel. They also added coolant. The repairman showed me an exterior electric panel that was corroded and would likely be the next part to fail. He did that as a service, not to raise revenue. Their service was as good as it gets. They would not break down the repair between parts and labor. It seemed expensive for the task.
Description of Work: Inspected the A/C system and repaired it on short notice on a Friday night.

Response from Total Air & Heat Co
We appreciate the kind comments you made about our service! We really do our best to make our customers aware of what may be the next thing to fail as an added benefit and as you stated: not to raise revenue. In regards to your comment about us not giving you a break out on part and labor: that is because we use a lump sum flat rate repair guide. Our technicians don't have any parts or labor break outs. The State of Texas allows us to use a lump sum repair option, this saves you money by paying tax on the parts cost rather than a retail price. It also saves you money by having a fixed sum for all repairs, regardless of how much time it takes. You know the repair costs in advance rather than us making the repair and then telling you how much the cost was. I hope this explains why we don't split out parts and labor. Please feel free to call me if you have any other questions. We appreciate your business. Best Regards, Steve Lauten President

The service technician arrived 15 minutes late. His attitude was curt and not very communicative. The service technician parked his truck in the middle of the driveway, blocking my wife from getting out of the garage. After I asked him to move his truck so my wife could leave, he took at least 10 minutes to move hist truck, saying "he had something he had to finish up." For some reason, never explained to me, the technician used my garden hose. When he was finished, he did not roll it up in its holder, but left it lying on he ground. The technician had mud on his feet when he came into my home and tracked mud on my carpeting. When the sales person for Total came out to my home he tried to sell me on replacing the electrical connection, saying it was "in violation of code." I do not believe that is true. The company that I selected to ultimately do the work never mentioned the electrical connection and replaced the compressor without replacing the electrical connection.
Description of Work: Service call for A/C compressor.

I'm sorry to see our service did not meet your expectations. With the traffic in the DFW area beyond our control (specially during rush hours) we feel arriving within 15 minutes of a promised time is stellar performance. I have visited with my service technician and my salesperson and there appears to be some type of misunderstanding as to what occurred. Here is what we feel accurately describes the events: 1. Your electric disconnect was burnt and melted. I can't imagine any contractor replacing your unit and not replacing the electric disconnect, was a city permit pulled as required by law? 2. According to my technician, your street is laid out where our van can't be parked in front of the house, only your driveway was large enough. My tech did move his vehicle to allow your wife to leave, and did wait in the street at least 5 minutes before she left the house. At no time did he see your wife outside waiting for him to move his vehicle. 3. We did use your garden hose which was not rolled up, it was already laying out in your yard. I have instructed my technician to use the hose we provide him, or if he uses somebody else's hose, to roll it up even if it was not rolled up when he started or to ask the customer if they want the hose left where it was found? 4. All of our technicians wear floor savers shoe covers on their shoes. My tech has confirmed he did wear floors savers in your home. He does admit a small piece of dried up dirt was picked up from your carpet at your request. He also says he removed his shoes and showed you that there was no dirt on the shoes and he does not have a clue where the dirt on your carpet came from. However the dirt was picked up and no spots were left on your carpet, nor any mess left for you to clean up. In summary, you say we attempted to upsell you when in fact all we did was make you aware your electric disconnect needed to be replaced. If your disconnect was not replaced your new unit will almost certainly experience a premature failure. In addition your comments reflect you paid too much. We spent 45 minutes traveling to your home and 45 minutes at your home and you were charged $60.00! I think that is a fair price by any standard you choose. My techs average an hourly cost with benefits of $30.00 per hour, we spent 1.5 hours of time associated with your service call, plus fuel. I think the math is pretty clear that $60.00 did not cover our costs. If you had decided to use us, we would have applied the $60.00 towards the new unit. You suggest we upgrade our service and sales staff. We have been chosen as the Best Heat and Air Contractor in Collin County 14 times, in business since 1957 and a multi year winner of the Angie's List Super Service Award. In my opinion that speaks for itself. Best Regards, Steve Lauten - President

I love their service! I am very happy with them.
Description of Work: I use Total for my heating and air conditioning. I have used them for a number of years. They come out twice a year. I have an annual service agreement with them. The price is for a three year service agreement. When they come out they check everything to see if Freon is needed, cleans everything out, checks my thermostat. They check the heating and air conditioning. They came out on the 4th of July about three years ago for me because my air went out and it ended up being a dead bug.

Called and gave initial price estimate on a Sunday afternoon. Tech was on site in less than 90 minutes after phone call. Raymond did a professional job and got my unit running in short order. My service call was more expensive soley due to me having a couple of additional suggested services done while he was here. I was very pleased with the work and thought Raymond did a great job and made very appropriate suggestions for the additional services.
Description of Work: Outside AC unit was damaged and not working after a heavy storm.
