Good experience. A contractor did the work - and came a week early. Earlier is better than later I guess, but not what was planned - no big deal because I didn't have plans. Finalizing order and scheduling was a drawn out process with office. I think they are overworked because of storms so I don't hold it against them much. My biggest problem is that stain was spilled over two patches of my lawn covering about 8 square feet and the stain killed the grass. The contractor did not apply multiple coats to areas where there was greater fading (as estimator discussed). Not a bad experience, but not an A performance.

Took over 2 months to get a date after initial purchase. They subcontract so had issues with what needed to be stained. Contractor wanted to argue about what was supposed to be stained. Stain appears to be fading already on some sections of fence.

Sorry for any delays. We moved offices in April and it was a tough transition. We do not use subcontractors and your contract was very clear on what we were supposed to stain. The stain you requested is transparent and shows a lot of character. I don't think fading is the right term to use here. If would like to discuss the job further please feel free to call.

Terrible. Firstly they were late to send back quotation after the onsite assessment. 2nd, it took them too long to confirm the appointment, however on the day of the appointment they contacted again to reschedule cuz the guy was behind of their schedule. Finally they made another appointment 2 weeks after that. The guy came and then the office called me to inform that they couldn't find the material. Such a waste of time with this contractor. I ordered my usual handyman and my project was completed within less than a week after his assessment and for a price less than Texas Best Stain game me in the first place.

Job started 03/03/2017. Finally finished at 05/05/2017. Mostly due to bad weather and too windy to spray paint. The project manager Jason is super nice and very professional. He talked to me and update me all the time and has been to the house 5 times. The first attempt was bad. Job poorly done. Jason inspected the result with me and had someone came to fix the paint. The final result was great and they did more than they committed to without additional charge. They are really a very honest and trust-worthy company. Jason is the best project manager I have dealt with from all the vendors and service providers.

Here are my responses in regard to TBS’s FALSE statements for their response posted on 3/10/17 after my original review on 3/8/17. Dishonest business practice, uncooperative, rude & bully owner. We do not recommend Texas Best Stain……. This updated review has solid evidence to support all claims against Texas Best Stain (TBS). Due to limitation of space for the posts, I can provide a 9-page long document, pictures and screen capture of TBS’s responses to any consumer who cares to find out the truth and make their own conclusions regarding TBS’s business conduct. TBS’s claim: Why would you pay your bill if you were not happy with your fence? You forced me to offer a discount by refusing to pay your bill. You demanded that we discount your bill by $1200 because you got another quote (that you did not chose) from another company that was cheaper (based on cheaper materials) after you agreed to our contract. Response: Of course I have to pay for the work and material TBS have finished and provided up to 3/3/17, because it’s the RIGHTFUL thing to do. My proposal to settle the dispute was the difference between the lesser quality #2 pickets TBS has provided. TBS refused to accept the proposed difference of $1200 and offered $500 reduction on final invoice. (The 9 page document will show how the $1200 difference was derived) I decided to accept the offer and move on. I’d rather take a ($700) loss and view this bad experience as a life-time lesson on what to do and what not to do when selecting a reputable fence company. In addition, it’ll cost me a $2500 retainer for an attorney who charges $300/hour fee at minimum of $1000 to handle this case. His advice to me it’s to send a 60-day notification letter to TBS that states I’ll be filing suit for DPTA (Deceptive Practice Trade Act) against TBS to Collin County JP court on my own, because the damage value of $1200 is not justified for his legal services. TBS’s claim: We provided you written proof of your materials and your fence is beautiful. FALSE: Written proof of the purchased materials WAS NEVER provided. When I requested for the supplier’s fence material PAID INVOICE or RECEIPT, TBS provided a SALES QUOTE instead without transaction date. No proof or evidence of better quality of #1 cedar pre-stained was picked up on 2/7/17 for the project. When I called and visited TBS’s supplier warehouse, I learned that they only sell #1 cedar raw un-stained and only #2 cedar come in pre-stained. After I continuously request for the supplier’s PAID INVOICE or RECEIPT, TBS became agitated, uncooperative and harrassive. (The 9 page document has the screen capture evidence to support these claims) Mr. Cloninger even made comment that I have no business contact his fence supplier and should take his words and accepted the pickets were #1 cedar because he said so. TBS’s claim: We made an effort to replace multiple pickets with "minor" imperfections at our own cost that were completely normal in every way to make you happy. Your request for replacing boards you "didn't like" was the cause of the delayed completion date you are referring too. FALSE: I never mentioned any boards that I “didn’t like” as claimed by TBS, therefore, it caused the delay of the completion date. (FALSE! FALSE! FALSE!) It was the suggestion from TBS’s salesman after conducting the final walk through on 2/21. He noticed these imperfect picket boards have seen through holes and he said these boards are not supposed to be used. He will schedule the crew to come back to replace it (Total of 4 boards). He’ll also have them replace the incorrect choice door metal insert and fix the crack space between neighbor fence and the new fence. That’s why I sent the final punch list reminder on 2/21 and TBS crew finally completed the punch list on 3/3/17. TBS’s claim: We met with you every time you had a question and did everything in our power to explain the difference between #1 and #2 lumber in our industry. FALSE: Never happened. Mr. Cloninger and I never met in person. He and I only communicated via emails. I did leave a voice message on his cell number to return my call regarding the authenticity of the pickets, but he never returns my call. My husband met TBS’s salesman ONE time at the initial estimate on 1/16/17. We both met him again at the final walk through 2/21/17 which was my 1st meeting with TBS salesman (nice gentleman). Total of TWO times for the entire project. Nothing was discussed about the difference between #1 and #2 cedar. TBS’s claim: Your job was scheduled and completed on scheduled dates and your request for replacing boards you "didn't like" was the cause of the delayed completion date you are referring too. FALSE: TBS salesman verbally mentioned completion date should be 3-4 days for this size’s project. Due to miscommunication between their office and crew, incomplete material caused the delay. I took a vacation day from work on 2/7, the day construction started, and another day off from work on the expected completion day on 2/10. By around 2pm on 2/10, I discover that the front custom arch gates did not have decorative corbels and the extra 1x2 trim. I immediately contacted the salesman and he confirmed with the crew that the contract indeed has decorative corbels design along with metal insert and not the extra 1x2 trim. The crew foreman suggested I should pay him $300 cash instead without his company’s knowledge for the extra 205 feet 1x2 trim to make the fence looks nicer with the corbels. I didn’t accept his offer because it was unethical practice. As I found out later on 2/13 their salesman provided an official quote of $205 instead. TBS’s crew called in sick on Monday 2/13, and on 2/14 it was raining. Therefore, they showed up on Wed 2/15 and finished the fence on Friday 2/17 while I was out of town. I received a call around 3pm Pacific Time from the crew foreman saying that they finished the fence, but will return to clean up and pick up remaining fence material next Monday 2/20 or Tuesday 2/21. The final walk through was conducted at 12:30pm on Tuesday 2/21 with TBS’s salesman. He was surprised to see fence material and trash were still left in my yard. (The 9 page document has pictures for the incident) After submitted TBS’s review on Angie’s List, Mr. Cloninger was not pleased and offered to take down his company’s sign and void the 10-year warranty due to my review posted on 3/8/17. This is another bad business practice by TBS for not honor their warranty just because he dislike customer’s negative review. My husband sent him a NO TRESPASSING notice to warn him not to come near our property without our permission. After such a horrible and unpleasant experience with TBS, their company’s 10-year warranty has no value to me, because I have lack of trust and uncomfortable to conduct any business with such bad reputation company. My conclusions and comments for this unpleasant experience with TBS are as follows. I have been a resident of the DFW area for total of 35 years including being resident of City of Plano for the last 27 years. I have worked with many home improvement contractors in the past and have never once sought for legal advice for DPTA suit against any contractors. This is the first time I’ve had to resort to this, and I’m hoping this will be the last. I have spent over $12,000 for this fence project and with it came headaches and distress dealing with Texas Best Stain. In addition, I’m spending valuable weekend time to response to the bully owner’s FALSE claims. I hope this terrible experience can help to prevent any homeowners from going through what I have recently experienced with company like Texas Best Stain.

We have documentation of the entire process and you are false in all of your claims. Why would you pay your bill if you were not happy with your fence? You forced me to offer a discount by refusing to pay your bill. You demanded that we discount your bill by $1200 because you got another quote (that you did not chose) from another company that was cheaper (based on cheaper materials) after you agreed to our contract. We provided you written proof of your materials and your fence is beautiful. We met with you every time you had a question and did everything in our power to explain the difference between #1 and #2 lumber in our industry. The picture you posted of #1 cedar is unstained so it does not show any character. This character is not visible until stain is applied. We are not sure how we could have ever made you happy based on our experience. We feel we were 100% responsive and accommodating in every way. You seem to have had an inclination to leave a bad review from the start of this relationship in my opinion. In 7 years of business no customer has ever accused us of being dishonest or being deceptive. I think our reviews on AL, yelp, Google, etc. will show that very clearly. Your job was scheduled and completed on scheduled dates and your request for replacing boards you "didn't like" was the cause of the delayed completion date you are referring too.

It has been 10 years since we moved into our house. We needed a new fence desperately. The good ole’ spruce fence was looking dilapidated. We were ready to move quickly with this transaction with the right vendor. I contacted 6 vendors for a free estimate from different channels. Two of the six free estimates I received from the highest reputable fencing contractors on Angie’s list. Initially, I reached out to Texas Best Stain inquiring about a coupon deal. The deal stated The deal state "Upgrades may be purchased directly." Immediately, I received a reply message, “We can do all for XXX if you go directly through us. Please send your contact information over and we will call to go over details and scheduling if you are interested. Thanks.” I called their office to schedule an appointment. I was in contact with Rocky. Rocky went over the details of the fence with me from trim, height etc. He emailed me a few pictures of the fence to show how the fence would look like based off the fence details I requested. I scheduled an appointment with him to firm up the free estimate he provided over the phone. Unfortunately, it rained heavily on the day of my appointment. The traffic from downtown to the house was heavy. I was about 30 minutes late arriving to the house. However, Rocky did measurement the fence. Then he had to head to his next appointment so I didn’t meet him in person. We kept in touch via text and he promised to call me the next day to provide the estimate. The next morning, Rocky left me a voice message explaining he would call me later in the afternoon as he had a few morning meetings. Keeping true to his word, he emailed and called me with the estimate. The estimate was for 175 ft. versus the initial 155 ft. based off my measurements. (As a side note, I did re-measure the fence. The fence measured 175 ft.) In doing the math, Rocky’s price quote did not change per feet. There was no upcharges. We reviewed other details such as the work that would be performed, permit, crew size, completion time etc. As a day to day project consulting manager, these details are important to communicate to the client. The reason I did not select Texas Best Stain as the contractor came down to price and time. I received a lower bid that included a few better upgrades and the timing was better. In summary, I would recommend considering Texas Best Stain as a fence contractor. Their pricing is very reasonably lower than the other estimates I received. Rocky is professional, easy to work, with and the communication is on point in my experience dealing with Texas Best Stain.

They didn't use the stain that was discussed, didn't replace the top caps and it just isn't finished. I worked with Keith at the beginning and after completion (as far as they were concerned), he was non responsive. Eventually I received a call from Rocky, who said he is the owner and apologized for Keith and said he is no longer with them. Two more weeks and several calls by me have gone without response. It has been over 2 months for a simple project. They had good reviews but I would stay clear as they are not customer friendly and not responsive at this time. We did the project in Oct so it would look nice for the holidays, not so much. Update: (01/13/2017) After my review on Angie's list the owner (Rocky) reached out to me to make sure I would get satisfied. He sent his crew back, used the correct stain, replaced the top caps and now we have the outcome that we originally wanted. Rocky has been easy to deal with and want us to be a satisfied customer.

Initial contact and bids done in early April, Todd was confident and responsive, however, with Spring rains and other delays, work didn't actually begin until June. I made a point of asking Michelle to arrange for a supervisor to come by and review the work after it was complete to be sure it was up to their standards. I repeated this request throughout the job (as you'll see, they ignored this request). Finally got a start date, however, nobody showed that day, and although I was assured they would complete in one day, they came the next afternoon with a "crew" of 1 inexperienced guy and his girlfriend. Obviously he did not finish, in fact, he managed to make the posts even less level than previously. He also didn't bring any of the tools necessary for the paver repairs. I complained about this and asked for Todd to come back and review the work done so far and to be sure he had communicated the job requirements correctly. He did come out and was dismayed to see how poorly the work had been handled. He assured me they would send out a better crew. A different crew did show up, and they managed to properly align the fence posts, however, they indicated that the stain quoted was incorrect (needed an oil-based paint instead), and since they also showed up after noon, they didn't complete. They said they'd be back the next day. The same guys showed up, but with a new guy in charge, who said it was his job to "make me happy." They proceeded to stain the fence, and he got to work on the pavers (again, without the proper tools). He also didn't have the hardware for the gate latch (said it wasn't quoted) and had to spend an hour or so at Home Depot buying one. He bought a completely different kind of latch that didn't fit the hole where the old one was, thus leaving a big hole in the gate. I had to demand they fix the hole. He also bought one that latches on the outside, so I can't lock the gate. The work was finally, completed, and looked okay from inside the back yard. However, upon examining the outside of the fence, the crew was incredibly sloppy in staining, getting huge brushes and splashes of paint on the stainless steel posts, very unsightly. Again, since no supervisor came by to review the work, I had to demand they return to fix this, which was finally done. However, the final insult, the guy that did the pavers, didn't wash off the red brick correctly after cementing them in, so now I have an ugly sheen of concrete film over the bricks. Also, my yard had all kinds of debris and trash from the job, which they didn't bother to clean up. I was so disgusted at this point I didn't bother reporting the paver issue. If you use these people, be vigiiant.

Complete failure before it even began. Communication and professionalism was about the worse I have experienced in my entire life.

Response from Texas Backyard Living
Sir, Here is our message thread. We were completely responsive and punctual in all aspects. Your quote was delivered in a timely manner, you accepted, and work was scheduled on the days you requested. When we arrived on the scheduled date you were rude to my employees and were rude to me. Cussing and yelling at my employees for no reason is not OK. I asked my crew to leave and told you I did not wish to do business with you. You threatened me with a lawyer before we even started the project. You replied: what email should we use. All further contact will be emailed. Jul 15, 12:38pmYou replied: The crew will call in the morning. I'm not sure yet. If you prefer AM or PM you can let me know. Jul 15, 12:34pmJoe wrote: I never received the email. I now have you down. What time will you arrive on 7/20? Jul 15, 12:28pmYou replied: [Member Name Removed], We emailed yesterday. You are scheduled for 7/20 and 7/21. Jul 15, 12:16pmJoe wrote: Since I have not heard back yet, I must assume that you will not be hear on Monday, 7/18. I will schedule myself as out of pocket that day. That leaves Tuesday through Thursday left open for your visit. Please let me know when my fence will be pressure washed and stained. The other: I have three fencing signs that need to be removed prior to power washing and [Member Information Removed], one on the east front and two alley side. Estimate process was quick, price was right, and installation was a breeze. The fence looks great, and everyone along the way was super friendly. 10/10 would have them do a fence for me again.
