Walter takes pride in his work and talks about his work with lot of passion and emotion. He was very thorough and meticulous. He never once gave me an attitude and took care of everything as I pointed them out. He was very patient with a picky customer like me and remembered everything he said he would do without me reminding him, like painting my iron gate or the outdoor light fixture and the from door wood panel. He enjoys his work.
Description of Work: Walter Barber and Major (his helper) did the exterior painting with Benjamin Moore Paint at my house/ The 2 storey brick house took 4 days. I was apprehensive at first but after meeting with him, I knew I could hire him. I got other quotes from bigger companie who would provide 3 or 5 year warranties but all would spray paint instead of brush and roll. Walter was the only one who would brush and roll and use high-end paint.

He was very prompt. He set the appointment and met the appointment. The work was perfomed on time and to my specifications. Walter was a pleasant guy.
Description of Work: He gave an estimate and reviewed the work with me. He came back the next day, removed the wall paper and retextured a bathroom and hallway for me.

We had a roof leak around the chimney and the drywall got ripped back around the fireplace and he came in and repaired it. He was here when he said he was going to be. I would use him again in the future.

I had read the mixed reviews of Mr. Barber but ultimately decided to use his services since there weren't many options for dealing with mold without full-scale remediation, which we didn't feel was necessary in this small area. We did have a lot of issues with his reliability. Out of five days, he no-showed on two of them and was hours late on a third. When he did arrive, he worked quickly and seemed to know his stuff and do a thorough job on the mold and drywall repairs. The painting left something to be desired. In the closet, he insisted that the white paint currently there had a blue tint to it, while I was pretty sure it was just plain white. After discussing it for a while, though, I finally gave in since it was just a closet and let him use the white with a blue tint. I ended up being right and had to repaint the closet later. In the bathroom, he worked quickly and seemed to do a quality job. He even removed and reinstalled lights and wall cabinets. But after he left, I noticed that everything that was left had small paint splatters all over it - towel racks, light switches, and worst, the countertop. I was able to get some of it off, but we ended up replacing the towel racks and light switches and part of our countertop is still speckled. How hard is it to throw down a drop cloth? I will not be using him again.
Description of Work: Walter Barber removed a section of bathroom drywall that had mold on it, treated the area for mold, replaced and retextured the area, and repainted the whole bathroom. He also replaced the bottom portion of drywall in a closet that had ant damage and repainted that area.

In response to this report, first of all when I first looked at the job I told Member that the job would be a process, and would take 4 to 5 days. I removed the wet and moldy drywall, and I allowed two days for everything to dry out. Then on the third day I replaced the sheet rock and taped and bedded. At this point the sheet rock mud needed at least a day to dry. The next day I re-skimmed the sheet rock tape lightly and textured. Finally I came in when everything was dry, I covered everything with my drop cloths witch was not to be painted and I painted the bathroom and closet. All was fine and as always I asked my customer to inspect my work in case of any complaints before they paid me. Member said that everything was fine and wrote me my check.

I don't remember the price charged by them, but I think it was in the $7000 to $9000 range. We were very satisfied with the quality of their work. They showed up on time and did what they were supposed to do. They did it well. The crew was friendly and courteous. They cleaned up after themselves. They did a good job. All in all, it was a good experience. Their price wasn't the lowest and it wasn't the highest. They were on the lower side. We got a good deal. They were really thorough in terms of the prep work which is what counts when you are painting. They really did a good job of prepping and making sure everything was done properly in terms of priming, painting and caulking if needed. They spent a good amount of time doing the prep work. There were a couple of places where they had missed the spots. If we saw something and pointed out even while the work was ongoing, they used to fix it. At the end of the job, Walter did a walk through with my wife. They together found spots that needed to be touched up or had been missed. He took care of all of that. They pretty much showed up when they said they were going to. If something came up where they were going to be late or not going to make it that day, they used to make sure to call in and let us know. We would use them again in the future.
Description of Work: Walter Barber did some outside painting for us within the last couple of months. They painted all of our outside woodwork which includes a fair amount of soffits, window and door frames. They cleaned it and primed it. They replaced or fixed the rotten boards. Then they primed and painted it.

Walter was the first of the 3 potential contractors we called, that came by the house and gave us an estimate. He showed up on time on the day he was to begin work, and worked hard all day to make sure that it was finished before dinner. He came back the next day briefly to paint and do touch-ups.
Description of Work: Walter and his team did a great job patching several holes in the ceiling (both indoors, and in the garage) due to some gas lines that had to be replaced. He needed to float some boards in the ceiling, fill in with drywall, patch, and repaint. Walter was very kind, efficient, and did a great job. He even patched a small area upstairs that wasn't included in the original estimate!

He was great. He also did some interior work for me previous to that for which I don't remember the cost. He removed some water stains from the ceiling. He did that extremely well. He was very personable and I plan on using him again in the future. Everything has been fine with the paint job and there has not been any complication. He did the interior work by himself but had a helper with him for the exterior painting work. The helper seemed to be fine but I was not watching him closely. I spent $500 or $600 for the job.

Walter came and gave us the estimate the next day after I called him. He was available to work soon which was what we needed. He was very punctual and was even early most of the time. The drywall repair work was excellent and was not noticeable and the painting work was done in the same great quality. Walter is a perfectionist when it comes to the painting - He is more like an artist than a painter. He was very responsive to our concerns and provided us with outstanding customer service. Most of the days he worked extended hours and after each day he cleaned up after himself so the space was immediately usable for that evening. I can say I surely got my money's worth with Walter. I did not find anyone who can match Walter's price for the work. Thank you very much Walter!
Description of Work: We had our first floor flooded and the cleaning company had the drywall bottom section torn down. The wall had texture on it so the new drywall needed to be texture-matched and repainted. As such, the whole first floor was repainted and textured and so was the ceiling which was quite extensive in our house. All the bath and bedrooms (about 6 rooms including dining rooms in total) were textured & painted with 3 pairs of matching color themes. Two of the bathrooms had to have the wallpaper stripped. Bathroom and kitchen cabinets are refinished and painted. At last the baseboards along the first floor walls was installed.

While I can't comment on his work, I can comment on his work ethic. Walter came to my house and was very personable and nice. He spent about an hour with me going over everything that needed to be done and expressed that the job was doable and he would do it himself. He said he would have a quote back to me by Tuesday. I had expressed that I needed the work done within the week because I am putting my house up for sale and he said no problem. I had scheduled new carpet installation and a cleaning service based on him telling me he could get the work done within that time. I had noticed some reviews on Angie's List about him not being punctual and not getting back to people, but thought it was worth a try since he had been so highly recommended by so many people...shame on me. I expressed these concerns to him and he assured me that he would get back to me by Tuesday. Of course, he never got back to me, nor has he returned any of my calls. Because of this unprofessionalism, I have had to delay putting my house on the market by at least a week. I am having to find someone else to do the work and reschedule all the other work I had already scheduled. Very poor customer service and just inconsiderate.

Overall, the whole experience with Mr. Barber went exceedingly well. He was prompt, informative, and informed us of his arrival and departure times regularly. In other words, if he said he would be here at a certain hour, he was punctual. I might add that Mr. Barber is not simply a painter but an artist as well. He is proud of his work and should be!
Description of Work: Our home was recently painted by Walter Barber. His name and phone number are now in my address book owing to the excellence of his work, his 35 years' experience, his dependability, and the quality of the paint he used. He proved to be a man of his word as well as a man of good cheer. The price he quoted was reasonable and fair, and we are delighted to report that we are very pleased with the appearance of our home. All trim looks very neat. Gutter removal and the hauling off of them was performed expertly. We recommend him highly. In fact we have recommended him twice already.

I contacted Walter Barber and set an appointment for the next day. Walter showed on time. I explained the work that I needed; remove wallpaper, texture and prime walls in the entryway and master bathroom. Walter gave me an estimate and we set an appointment for him to start the work at 9AM the next morning. Walter arrived on time and started removing the wallpaper in the entryway. All of the walls were papered from floor to ceiling. Walter was careful to lay drop-cloths where-ever he was working. Since he used wallpaper remover, he could not texture the walls until the remover dried. Walter cleaned up his work area and came back the next morning. Walter also removed the wallpaper in the master bathroom using the same careful, methodical, and professional approach. Walter patched holes and filled all nail holes in the walls, then textured the walls and prepared them for painting. I will call Walter when I decide on a color for these areas. I recommend Walter Barber.

Mr. Barber and his partner went straight to work clearing away the brush and debris behind the shed/garage and completely washed the house, garage etc. I am so happy that the shed looks better than when I moved in. I realized that the company that I used in the past to paint my home didn't do it right. The meticulous attention to detail that was taken on my home is evident in the finished result. My home looks great and I have received compliments from friends and neighbors.
Description of Work: Removed rotten wood on the back and side of shed; rebuilt shed door. Replaced wood around two doors; removed rotten boards on the house and replaced with new. Repaired screening in garage and shed. Washed home; sanded and caulked; then hand painted the house, detached garage and shed. Painted iron on front porch with perfectly matched paint and refurbished shutters and front door.

Another contractor messed up my bathroom ceiling and I called Waler to fix it. I also had him tear out some boxes that were built over 2 vanities and repair the ceilings and walls where the boxes were torn out. Walter came in assesed the situation, gave me a reasonable price and did the work. The new drywall looks great, the ceilings look great, I would definitely use Walter again.

We hired Walter after reviews on Angie's List, many of which noted he was good, inexpensive, but somewhat unreliable. That proved true. His estimates were by far the most inexpensive. However, throughout the process it was frustrating to get him to complete the work. Some days he never showed without a phone call. Some days he would call, then never show. When he did come, his work was great. His painting was meticulous and his drywall repair fantastic. However, he was a bit sloppy with the paint cleanup. Ultimately, the worst sin was that he never finished the job. After I paid him the final installment, he failed to come back to finish a small area in our formal living room. Repeated calls were met with no call back. I liked Walter, and he did a good job when he came, but when you hire someone and pay them the agreed amount, you expect them to finish.

The years of experience paid off in that he did a quality job, and gave us some good advice. However, in giving us a bid he forgot to tell us that bid he gave us was for just him, and he would need at least another, perhaps two to meet our deadline (which was pretty flexible). We didn't learn this until after he had started, so we were stuck. We were able to register our disappointment in the way he does business and negotiate, but we shouldn't have had to.

The project was not just a paint job. I needed to restore the entire outside of a ‘Foursquare’ located in the Winnetka Heights Historic District, Dallas, and built sometime in the 1920s. I picked Mr. Barber off Angie’s List. I have restored two historic homes, and dealt with many paint contractors. Mr. Barber is head and shoulders above any and all I have dealt with. His price was reasonable. More importantly I picked Mr. Barber, because his plan, from the beginning was well thought out, and he explained everything he was going to do. This job was very difficult, and would take six to eight weeks. Mr. Barber and his crew were meticulous in their work. They literally had to rebuild whole sections of my house. They made many, many small repairs. The prep work – sanding and caulking – was outstanding. I had many people in my neighborhood say they had never seen preparation that was so thorough. On my job, Mr. Barber was extremely reliable and trustworthy. If he said he would do something, he did it, no ifs, ands, or buts. He never missed appointments. When there were problems (and there are always problems in a project of this size), he quickly brought them to my attention, and we worked them out. If you would like to see the house and Mr. Barber’s work, don’t hesitate to contact me at Kkirks1414 at gmail.com

I called and made an appointment with Walter and he showed up exactly when he said he would. He went over the job and offered suggestions and then furnished a written estimate for the entire job. They made a date to do the work. However, the job they were on got delayed for a few days. He called and we agreed to do my job earlier than planned. They arrived on time and worked cheerfully and dilligently and got the job completed when they promised. They did everything asked of them, and my wife and I were very pleased with the results. I solicited one other estimate and Walter's bid was much lower.
Description of Work: He and his helper removed all of the mildew under my patio cover and under the eaves around the house. They caulked all cracks in these areas. They painted the two back doors and the front door and surround. They also painted the wood facing around the garage door. They spent two hours removing the dark finish on the door handle to reveal a bright brass which they then sealed with lacquer. They also replaced a corroded air vent in the ceiling of one of our bedrooms.

Did an excellent job for us. His quote was the best we got, and he encouraged us to let him do a good outside cleaning with his special mix of materials before we painted to see how much painting we really needed. As it turned out, the cleaning result was so good all we needed was some selective touch up. He is very methodical and efficient. His 30 years of experience really showed. After I saw how he did on the outside painting I had him do some selective interior painting that was not part of our original agreement. At the end I insisted on giving him several hundred dollars extra ( a first for me), though he never asked for it,because of the extra things I asked him to do. I chose him originally because of his good reviews, and I was not disappointed. I will use him for all my future painting needs.
