I went to select granite at the only site recommended by Gordon. Although Gordon had emphasized that I needed to select the granite ASAP, he failed to tell me that for insurance reasons, granite places require the builder or fabricator to accompany the client. I had to make a second trip so Gordon could be present. He and I agreed on a slab of the same grade included in his bid. Gordon was to get with his fabricator to confirm the pricing and timing. Another couple of hours at Gordon's recommended tile showroom. The tile consultant was incredulous at Gordon's allocation for tile. She said she didn't have anything or know of anything -- even seconds or discontinueds -- for the per square foot price Gordon provided in his bid. She said ANY floor tiling I selected would be a minimum of 2-3x Gordon's estimate. Still I proceeded, with Gordon promising to "get back with me". Having completed my "TO DO List" Gordon scheduled my job for "demo" on a Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. I had had new floors put in the weekend before and, although the floor guys wanted to move the furniture back into the hallways and rehang the pictures, I knew this would be in the way of demolition the very next day and asked them to leave all the furniture crammed in the middle bedroom so G&S wouldn't have to spend their time moving the same furniture back into the middle bedroom. By 9:30 a.m that Monday morning, neither Gordon nor his demo crew had arrived OR called. My third call to Gordon indicated that the crew was to have been at my house at 8:30 and that Gordon was running an hour late. I reminded Gordon I had a meeting that I would need to leave for no later than 11 a.m. Around 10 am, one man with a crowbar (i am NOT kidding) was at my front door with Gordon. As the demolotion crew of one started spreading protective cloths on my floors, Gordon told me, for the first time, that the granite slab i'd chosen would be $1,000 more than his bid. I asked how this could be, since the granite was of the level he budgeted and why was I just now hearing of this. The slab selected would have increased my costs by over 10%. Gordon said it was because my job didn't require a full slab. Gordon himself had taken the measurements and SHOULD have known this and figured a full slab into his bid. I'm fearing at this point that I will have to re-start the entire materials selection process. Additionally, the tile over what the tile salesperson said was an impossibly low budget. Gordon appeared to have several topics to cover, but by now I am needing to leave my house for the meeting Gordon knew I had. Had he been on time, we would have had that extra hour to go over things. I returned home immediately after the meeting to find no sign of activity and all the protective materials removed. I called Gordon, who explained that he just didn't we have a good working relationship. I am absolutely STUNNED, since I have completed his "Must Do" List in a few days and had never once -- until the morning my project was to begin -- sensed ANY discord or ANY tension in our relationship. Practically speechless on hearing this, I asked Gordon if he would at least send some men over to help move the heavy cabinets back into the hallway..... the furniture the flooring guys were more than willing to move but that I had waived off so Gordon's demo "crew" wouldn't have to move it again. To this minute, I have not heard one word, from Gordon. I have owned a small business for over 30 years myself. I value honesty and integrity highly. I conjecture two things about Gordon Leonard and G&S Services, neither of which are good: (1) that Gordon Leonard seriuosly underbids a project in order to get the work. Once demo has started, the homeowner learns that things will cost a LOT more. Being able to present a realistic bid to a homeowner takes product knowledge and integrity. If the homeowner wants upgrades or adds extras, that of course is outside the bid and on the homeowner's tab. But the failure to present an realistic bid, only to have the homeowner experience reality AFTER the project is begun, is dishonest. (2) that Gordon Leonard either overcommits or doesn't have subcontractors available as he purports. One man with a crowbar does not constitute a demo crew, to remove and cart off a bathtub and marble panels requires more than one man. Caveat emptor on Gordon Leonard/ G&S Services. I would be 100% sure to get ALL components priced out FROM THE SUPPLIERS BEFORE starting your project so, if Gordon's bid becomes the highest priced, at least you know it before your project starts and you still have the option of changing contractors. I would also avoid ANY contractor who won't sign a written bid; otherwise, you might well be in over your head. Finally, while disputes do arise, I have little respect for a person who blames the other party for his own failure to perform as promised, and who lacks the integrity to make things right after HE exits left stage. Gordon Leonard is a likeable person with good references, but be smarter than I was or you too may be left high and dry with no notice.
Description of Work: Gordon Leonard bid to remodel my Master Bathroom. His bid was in the mid range of the 4 bids I got. He checked out well with 3 references and seemed to know what he was doing in bathroom remodeling. I got a timetable from Gordon on what I needed to do and when, and immediately started selecting granite, then tile, then fixtures. I took approximately 4 hours off work to make selections so he could get my job qued up. We seemed to work together well and he seemed impressed that I got going on my "Must Do" List so quickly. I asked when I would be signing a contract and he said he preferred not to work with a contract. Upon reflection, that should have been a huge red flag. And while each of the other 3 emailed copies of their insurance coverage (required by my homeowners' insurance), Gordon produced none, stating verbally that he had insurance. These should have been two red flags to me, but his references were good and he is a likeable person.

Response from G & S Services LLC
I did decide not to work with (member name removed) at the last minute. No work was done, no money changed hands and no contract was ever signed to do the work. At our last meeting I made the determination that we were not a good fit to work together based entirely on my feeling that our personalities would make for a difficult and unhappy working relationship. (member name removed) is understandably upset at my unexpected decision not to work with her.

They were excellent. I didn't have any dislikes, I was overall really pleased with them and they worked real well. They did the job on time and it was just a very pleasant experience. I thought the price was pretty fair.
Description of Work: I used G & S Services LLC to remodel the master bathroom and they added some closets in another room last January 2010.
