Well I say price is good, but that's only because this type of job is pricey. Also I was paying double this to a plumber who only charged by the hour! I fired him when he spent 1 1/2 days trying to find second leak, and said "well I'll come back tomorrow and keep trying.". Don't bother I said. American Leak has a flat rate for leak find of $500. So if you have 1 or 5 leaks it's same price. The repair was 1350 instead of around 1800 because I replaced the concrete myself after the repair to save money. Great job, found leak in about 2 hrs, returned another day to fix it.

Justin Jenkins had come out on the 13th to locate the leak and returned on the 17th for the repair. He went above and beyond during this day ... the location of the manifold, where the line had to be isolated from the rest of the system, was in a very tight, hard to get to corner in a bath linen closet. The line ended up being the supply to the kitchen sink, which had its difficulties when the decision was made for the reroute. Could not get the supply to the original position due to its being located on an exterior wall just below a window. Was able to drop new line, still within the cabinet, from an adjacent corner wall. Very professional service, timely despite the difficulties, would highly recommend this company and especially Justin to do the work. I will certainly use this company again for any future needs.

Great. Mike and the excavation crew fixed the issue, and they did it with minimal disruption.
Description of Work: ALD found and repaired a slab leak. Mike Dickerman, the specialist who did the work, was outstanding. The crew that dug the tunnel beneath the foundation also did a good job of excavating and cleaning up. Although they dug a 19 foot tunnel, he only charged me for a 16 foot tunnel because of an error he'd made in designing the tunnel. I thought his honesty was refreshing!

Response from American Leak Detection of Dallas
This member and repeat customer hired us to conduct a pool leak detection in 2006. We located the leak in the plumbing beneath her deck and were able to repair on a separate visit. According to our records, she contacted us one month after this initial visit and stated she suspected there may be another leak. Honoring the warranty, we returned to the member’s home and subsequently located a second leak at no additional charge and repaired it as well. Later, the member contacted our office a third time to inform us that her pool service company suspected another leak. Our technician inspected the pool again and set up the bucket test, returning the next day to check evaporation measures. There was no loss from the pool and the member was not charged for this third service. Our staff attended to this member’s concerns on three separate occasions and only charged her for the initial visit. As this service was completed six years ago, our records indicate no refund was awarded and no calls were received showing dissatisfaction. We always address any concerns our customers express and would never dismiss anyone. We are committed to providing the best leak detection available and feel we went above and beyond our duty to satisfy this customer by eliminating the fees for the two follow-up visits.

Great. I spoke to Brad over the phone and he explained their process and pricing. I explained the nature of my leak. I already had another company locate the leak, so I knew approximately where it was. Brad told me the base price and explained how the cost might increase depending upon exactly where the leak was (simply under the ground next to my spa vs. inside the stone/concrete wall of my spa -- obviously the latter would be more difficult to fix) and depending upon whether the leak was simply in a PVC pipe or a more complex and expensive component of the spa. But, Brad also told me the max price too (unless, there were actually more than one leak in my pool, in which case the additional leaks would be additional cost). I was pleased with Brad's honesty, but also pleased that he explained how the price could escalate and what would be the maximum cost (assuming a single leak). One of their competitors simply told me that their base price was $X (a lot more than what I ended up actually paying American Leak Detectors) and that they couldn't tell me how much more it might be until they did the work! I went ahead and scheduled the work. They were busy, so we scheduled it for a week and half out, but that didn't bother me because I'm not using my spa in the winter anyway. Brad arrived exactly when he said he would. Before Brad arrived, I went ahead and dug the soil out in the area of the leak and actually located the exact area of the leak (what can I say, I'm anal and I just wanted to see for myself where the leak was). When Brad came out and saw I had already dug the area, he said, that would save him some time and he would be happy to give me a credit for the time savings. Brad worked for about 3 hours to dig more to get around the PVC pipe that would have to be fixed and chip out some rock and concrete on the side of my spa (down under the dirt level, so it didn't matter to me). He replaced the broken PVC pipe and pressure tested the system to confirm the leak was repaired and no other leaks. He backfilled the soil in the hole and cleaned up the area. When he figured up the price, it was more than the base price (because he had to use a power air chisel to chip the rock and concrete out from the side of the spa to get at the broken pipe), but that was what I expected given what Brad had previously explained to me. Brad then gave me a credit for the time I saved him by digging out the hole and gave me another credit because he said the rock and concrete chipping wasn't as hard as it could have been. Wow, did I appreciate his honesty! I would have never known that! Now that's what I call honest and fair service! I think I paid a fair price to them and they treated me fairly as well. Thanks American Leak Detection and thank you Brad!
Description of Work: Brad of American Leak Detection repaired a leak in the 2" PVC line that runs to the spa next to our pool. Due to shifting soil (caused by the hot, dry summer we had last year), a crack was caused to the inside corner of a 90 degree PVC elbow, resulting in a slow leak.

Given a total of five leaks (one by the first company and four by ALD), I think that ALD's price was very reasonable. The first company had a cheaper detection fee but they charge high for repair -- overall not cheap at all. ALD charges me $350 for detection for whatever number of leaks. It is cheap for me as ALD four leaks. The repair was in such a high quality that nowhere is leaking by far (more than four months have passed since ALD finished the work). Every time when I take a look of the water level of the pool, not only do I enjoy my pool but also the quality of ALD.
Description of Work: The service was excellent. The technician Marcus is super! Marcus took a challenging task because ALD was the 2nd leak detection company that I hired. The first one (NOT ALD) found and repaired one leak of the pool with a warrantee promise but never returned when water leaking continued. Marcus found four more leaks and repaired all of them. By experiencing the performance of these two companies, I know better how good the ALD is! I found ALD Dallas from Internet and talked with office clerk Kara. Then she sent me the electronic contract and booked the technician's visits. The scheduling and contract in email were very professionally done. To me, that was a signal of high quality. When Marcus came, he has many equipments that the other company did not have. For example, after checking all pipes, he dived with oxygen supply and worked under water surface for quite long time -- one leak behind the pool lamp was found then. This was in a sharp contrast to the technician from the first company who dive to check leak by holding his breath -- 30 seconds max each time. For this particular leak, Marcus came twice: first to put the pump to drain the pool and second time to repair the leak. Every time Marcus did the job very properly and clean the work areas. There was no mess at all. Actually the pool area was much neater than before he and Jesi (another technician) started to work. This once again was in sharp contrast to the guys from the first company who washed their muddy hands and feet in the pool.

Soon after moving into our first home over one year ago, my wife and I got a water bill that would make any homeowner's knees buckle. We had "used" over 40,000 gallons of water, or about 1 gallon per minute!! When we purchased the home, the inspector noted that a leak existed, and we found a leak, had it fixed, and thought that was that. But we were wrong, and were set to receive a very expensive lesson. Over the course of a year, we had plumbers come who assured us that the leak was in the sprinkler system, and sprinkler guys come who assured us that the leak was in the plumbing below the house. Leaks here and there were fixed, and once or twice we got water bills that were closer to normal levels of usage (though it turned out it was shifting ground that would occasionally block the leak). At last, American Leak Detection was called and, after some subterranean excavation underneath our house, they found the leak! It was an enormous relief, and I was very impressed with their expertise. Now for the negatives. The leaking pipe they discovered is in horrendous shape, and needs to be replaced. The service guy who discovered our leak told us he would call with a quote first thing next week, as it was late Friday afternoon when the service was performed. We never heard from him again, and I ended up using a temporary patch until we can find someone else to perform the repair. About a week later, American Leak Detection called to tell us that we still needed to pay them. I informed them we had already paid by check. They called 3 or 4 additional times asking for payment over the next 2 weeks. At last, I determined they had lost our check, and checked the bank account one final time to make sure it had not been deposited. Well, it had. I guess they had just found the check, because we did not receive any more collection calls. Overall, the service that did perform was excellent, and they earn above average marks as they found a leak that had taken a year to discover. However, we were really hoping to get a repair quote from them, and the payment ordeal was an unnecessary hassle.

I have a large sprinkler system - 24 stations - with a separate water meter. The water meter was registering when the system was turned off which indicated a leak. I had two different sprinkler companies attempt to locate the leak. The second suggested I call a leak detection company. I called my plumber and his assistant recommended Angie's List. I chose American Leak Detection because of its ratings on Angie's list and because it was based in Plano. They were able to come out the next day and the technician located the leak in approximately one hour. The technician was very knowledgeable, well spoken, and professional. I subsequently had the sprinkler company repair the leak which was exactly where American Leak Detection said it was. I am very satisfied.

We called American Leak Detection to locate a water leak near our bathroom. This was over Thanksgiving, and they wouldn't come out until the start of the normal work week 4 days later(a big negative). I thought the leak was in the slab, but the plumber located the actual leak in the wall promply. The plumber gave me a cost to repair the leak, I agreed, and he fixed it. The work was highly satisfactory, but I wish they had greater coverage over weekends/holidays.

This is actually the 2nd time I have used ALD for my home for a major repair. The first time was in May 2010, after my dining room flooring was soaking wet. ALD came out, dug a tunnel under my kitchen and fixed the leak. The following May I thought I was just being paranoid when my kitchen floor felt warm (sign of a hot water leak) and called ALD to ease my mind, instead they detected another leak. Once again a tunnel had to be dug under my kitchen to repair the leak (we caught it early enough that there was no damage). Once the tunnel was dug they showed me the pipe from 2010 they repaired as well as where the new leak was to show me this was not the same spot but, if it had been they were prepared to stand by their work under warranty. Both years they came out it was the same plumber and crew which tells me there is not a high employee turn over. ALD is expensive and worth every dime. They do what they say they are going to do and they do it very well.

Marcus came out a week before the repair with scuba gear and checked the pool (which was cracked) for water leaks. He marked the crack for injection. When he came back the next week he drained the pool (about 20,000 gallons.) Draining the pool took two days then he came back and worked non-stop for 5 to 6 hours in 100+ degree heat. He didn't take a lunch break or stop until the job was completed. We then began filling the pool and had 10 people over to swim 3 days later. It was a great success and Marcus is the hardest worker I have met in years. I would recommend this company for all swimming pool repairs.

Gave to options to go through the kitchen and take your chance that we were on the wrong side of the beam, or pay more and tunnel through the garage floor. I went with garage and AMD was spot on. Good thing I didn't try to go cheap because I would have ended up paying more, more mess, etc. These guys know their stuff. I have no complaints on the workmanship, punctuality, etc. I will use them again. AMD will charge to locate, isolate, etc., and it's fair, because someone may not hire them to do the work but I wish that the payment to find the leak would have been credited when I hired them. That part of the payment wasn't covered in the insurance so I'm out of pocket $750 instead of around $500. Every buck counts these days.
Description of Work: They located and repaired a slab beam leak. $260+ to locate the leak. $2575 to do the work. Insurance covered most of it (minus the actual pipe repair cost and my deductible).

The above explains what happened. Was a straight forward deal. I called , the guy came out . Got out his detection equiptment and found the leak . Took him less than an hour. Everything was great. He charged $250 to do this, I assume was a fair price. He was nice guy fast and efficient, professional. The plumber came and repaired the leak.

Overall, it was a horrible experience, and so bad that I won't use Angie's List since they were advertised to find leaks, but all they do is dig holes. American Leak Detection needs to be investigated by the attorney generals office since they threatened to take me to court to pay for work they didn't perform. When the owner, Bobby, called me about the bill I refused to pay, he certainly had his pitch down as if he had been to small claims court before and threatened to file a lien against my house! The only reason I wound up paying them is because they made me sign a paper before they would do any work. I didn't have a choice at the time since there was water coming up from my backyard and didn't have time to argue with them. I needed the water leak stopped and they were more interested in having their paperwork in order.
Description of Work: I asked them to find a pool leak and all they did was dig a hole in my yard and left it open.

$125
Response from American Leak Detection of Dallas
We appreciate the feedback from this customer, however we do feel like the report he is giving is misleading. It should be noted that the price this customer paid for work performed is $125, which is significantly less than all of the other paid amounts shown by the other Angie’s List members’ reviews. The standard charge to perform a leak detection on a swimming pool (no spa) is $350. This customer informed us that he knew where his leak was, a detection was not necessary. He asked if we could dig up the leak and make the repair, waiving his detection fee. We told him that this was not recommended as we have seen water appear in a particular area, but the leak is in fact many feet away (water follows the path of easiest resistance). The homeowner INSISTED that the leak was in this location and asked if we would be willing to work with him, make an exception for him. We made an exception, and told him we would be willing to do this, however, if the leak was not there then we would have to perform the full detection as well as charge him for the time and labor of digging up the area where he believed the leak to be ($125) - the member agreed to this and signed the paperwork in which this was detailed. After digging up the area, unfortunately, it was discovered that the leak was not where the homeowner believed it to be. At that time we approached the customer and informed him that a full detection would be necessary to locate the leak and provide an estimate for the repair. He refused to pay for a full detection as well as the $125. At that time, we offered to waive the $125 if he would be willing to allow us to do the detection and help him get the leak found and fixed. The homeowner refused this offer. It was unfortunate that this happened, and this is why we always recommend a full detection. In this particular situation, we were attempting to help out this customer by waiving the detection. In the end, the customer flat out refused to pay for any of the work performed on his property, as he agreed to do both verbally and contractually. We hope that situations like this never occur, and we use this as training for our staff as to why full detections are necessary. We sincerely hope that the homeowner was able to get his leak found and fixed.

The technician was prompt, professional, friendly and knowledgeable. He explained what he was doing, and where to anticipate problems. The leak was also under a beam . It was too deep to dig and repair. Our only options were to replace the pipe with a new one (in the wall) or force epoxy through the pipe (which would seal the leak). This process is called e pipe. Replacing the pipe would be very distructive and make a mess. Therefore we chose e pipe. The process was very clean and appears to work (it has a 5 year warrenty). I liked everything about the work except the cost. To replace the pipe was 1400, the e pipe was 2000.
