Good company. Did good work. Electrician that showed up was very knowledgeable and personable. Could tell he was being pushed to sell the service contract. I would use them again. Good work, but very expensive.

The exhaust fans quit working. It was extremely hot in South Texas during the summer and even now in November AC is needed. I contacted Angie's List and selected Mike's Plumbing and Electrical. The repairman came and replaced the motors on the 2 fans and the fan on one. The other fan replacement was not bad so later they sent a repairman to replace that fan. Everything is now working well. The last visit was on November 15, 2012.
Description of Work: Replace 2 attic exhaust fans and motors. Excellent service! Mike himself called and checked on the progress. The technician was very professional.

The gentleman, came to look and see what was going on to give us an estimate. I related to him what we had been told, he went to check it out and didn't find the problems we had been informed we had. He asked to come inside to check the thermostat and it turns out that, because we have an older air conditioner unit, we can't use the filters. By checking something sosimple, he saved us hundreds of dollars. Very professional and helpful. We are very happy!
Description of Work: We were having air conditioning problems, it was not blowing cool air. Another replaced anti-freeze, then told us we needed to replace the compressor. It felt fishy so, we decided to get a second opinion and an estimate on how much it would cost.

I called Mike's because I had heard their ads on the radio and I needed both a plumbing and an electrical job done so I thought I could kill two birds with one stone. Well, it turned out that they have to send a plumber and an electrician separately so you have to pay two trip charges. However, the trip charge was reasonable ($19.99) so I decided to go ahead and give them a try. The plumber arrived first. I personally was not at home when he arrived but he called me as soon as he had assessed the situation. His initial price to replace the cartridge was about $320!! I gasped and said that was much too high, that the whole faucet had not cost that much! To which he immediately said that the lowest price he could give me was $210 plus 15% off for being a new customer. I thought about it but then told him that was still too high. He pointed out that they would give me a one year warranty. I said that Moen guarantees the cartridge for life, so that was no big deal. I also told him that I had previously replaced the cartridge on the shower and had paid somewhere around $100 for the job, not $200 or $300. I told him I would just pay the trip charge but did not want him to do the job. After we hung up, I called Allstar Plumbing, who have done numerous plumbing jobs for me in the past and I have always found them to do excellent work at a fair price. They told me over the phone that they would not charge me for the cartridge because that was guaranteed by Moen and that I would just pay the labor at $85/hour. I calculated that it would not take more than an hour for that job and therefore the job would likely cost around $100 with Allstar, confirming what I remembered from past experience. After hanging up with Allstar, I got a call from Mike's plumber who, as it turned out, was still at my house. He had made a call to Alex, his superior, and told me he had been authorized to do the job for me for $129, including the trip charge and the 15% discount. I told him that I really did not like this way of doing business where they start out ridiculously high on the price just to see how much they can get out of you. The fact that they could come down 60% on the price and still want to do the job shows how inflated the first price was and that it was designed to take advantage of any consumer who doesn't know what a fair price is. Well, I decided to let him go ahead and do the job since he was already there. The faucet is fixed but I came home to find that he did not take care to remove the towels which were in the cabinet underneath while he was working. Consequently, about four of my towels were dirtied and wet and there was still a small puddle of water in the cabinet when I got home. Sloppy. I won't call them again. P.S. The electrician didn't show up at the appointment time (nor did he call to say he was running late). I waited an extra hour and then cancelled.
Description of Work: The cartridge was replaced on a Moen faucet which was leaking.

I wasn't happy. Not just because the repairs were going to be expensive, but because I had to beg them to provide a report of the estimate to provide the seller of the home for our negotiations and the plumbers were blowing me off. I ended up buying the house any way. The plumbing was absolutely horrible. I found a different plumber to redo the entire home for around 3,000 including work Mike's didn't consider. I think they are over priced and not really concerned with customer service.
Description of Work: Called to get an estimate to repair the plumbing on a house I wanted to purchase. I was told that it would cost 20.00 dollars for the visit. When the plumbers arrived, they wanted another 175.00 to do the estimate. That didn't make sense to me. I asked them for the low end and high end estimates and for options they though would be reasonable to consider. They said they would provide a full report and options the next day. They didn't. In fact the only option they did ever put in writing was the 8,000 to 9, 000 dollar replace all the plumbing option.

They accepted the Angie's List discount with pleasure then charged me $153.69 to replace a 220 plug. I was thinking it would be $50 since he was in and out in less than 10 minutes. The service call charge is $19.99 and the part (220 plug) and labor was $160.87. Why? My neighbor had a 220 compressor hooked up directly to a 220 and they charged him $150, so I guess that is the minimum rate no matter how small the job.

Member, Thank you so much for your comment. We are sorry to hear that you were not 100% satisfied with the price of the repair. Although we do not charge by hour we do keep track of our Service Professionalls with GPS. According to our GPS records our service technician was dispatched at 11:15am and did not leave the residence until 12:11pm. Our highly trained technicians are not only professionally trained and licensed by the State of Texas but are drug free and have had their background checked to ensure the our clients safety. It does cost money to get our 'warehouse on wheels' to the customers home and especially when one factors in salaries, fuel, insurances and so forth. We would hate lose you as our valued customer please feel free to contact our office and we will be happy to discuss the issue with you. Thank you again for your concern and have a wonderful day!

It was a waste of time dealing with these people. The office staff seems accommodating but in reality they just relay messages and don't necessarily follow through. I have an old T12 flourescent fixture where the ballast needed replacing which is in an awkward position in the attic. On Friday, the electrician told me that as of July 2012 they will no longer make bulbs for this fixture. The question was do I fix this or just get new lighting. The electrician quoted me a price of $187 to fix but said he did not have the ballast and would have to come back. He charged me $20.00 for the visit. I asked him to quote me on some newer fixtures, ones that would not be obsolete since he did not have the ballast. Then we could decide what would be more cost efficient based on the four quotes he was going to provide me with. He knew that was my only light in the bathroom and said he would have the quotes on Monday. Monday came and went, I called the office on Tuesday. The office was accommodating and said he would get back to me that day. Tuesday came and went. I called again and was told he was working on the quotes and I asked if I could have them via email so I could make a quick decision and get the job done since I was without lighting in that bathroom. I called again on Friday and was told the electrician would call when he was done with his last job. He called around 6pm a week later with some info. He gave me a verbal quote of $187 to fix the obsolete fixture and gave me a verbal quote of $340 for a T8 which is about to become obsolete in a year and the newer fixtures which are energy efficient he said he could not quote because he could not find my size but would continue looking. At this point, he should have declined the job since he knew he did not want it. Two weeks later, I have heard nothing and no call back. I called another electrical contractor who asked me what kind of fixture, said he would find the ballast and be here the next morning to fix so that I would at least have lights in that bathroom. And he came the next morining and in twenty minutes I had light and at 1/3 of the quoted price by Mike's! I am across the valley from McAllen , near SPI, maybe Mike's is better at serving the McAllen area. I don't think they wanted the job and should not have taken my $20.00 knowing they weren't going to do the job. The $20.00 fee is for people who waste their time. In this instance I paid them to waste my time. Shame on you.
Description of Work: Took my $20.00 and promised me four written quotes for four differnt senarios which I should have had on March 5, 2012.

I called about the problem on a Sunday and received a call back from Sal, who was on duty, within a few minutes. After discussing, we decided that they'd send someone the next morning to look at it and discuss options.Their dispatcher called early on Monday to let me know that someone would be there and a short while later Sal arrived. He examined the damaged area and provided a range of options for repairs and we decided to repair the damaged meter box and also the load center to bring it up to current code. At completion, their work looked much better than what was originally installed in the house. I'd use them again for electrical work and would ask for Sal if he was available.

We were pleased with the service. There wasn't anything major; it didn't require running any new plumbing lines. I used Angie's List to choose from my area and they were listed in there. There were some good comments about them from other customers as well. I was really happy that it included a coupon if we mentioned that we had found them through Angie's List. That helped us save on the cost and just having had a good experience with them for that purpose. It was nice and we were very grateful for that. They ran the plumbing from our laundry room into the kitchen area. They checked the electrical part and connected the machine. With a dishwasher you can either hard wire it or use a plug and plug it into an outlet. There was an existing outlet underneath the sink so they made sure that the outlet was in good shape and if it was GFCI protected because the water was so close to it. They were very neat, came in and out without any problems. It was a good experience working with them. It sounds like they did a lot of work for $300. I do know that we were able use the coupon so that really helped. I don't remember what the discount was on it but they happily accepted it and didn't give us any trouble about it when we mentioned it to them. I think the price was very reasonable for the work that they did.

They were listed on Angie’s List. I was very pleased with their work. I had a problem with electrical shorts; it was an ongoing problem. I had a past diagnosis done by them, but the problem continued. I called the same serviceman back and he did a very good job of diagnosing the problem. Several electricians had tried to diagnose the problem, but they were not successful. It so happened that there was a problem with the voltage; the voltage was not to the level it was supposed to be. Initially, I paid $284, a month ago. The return service call cost me $65. Totally, I paid $320 on the service. I thought the price was high. I am happy with their service because I do not have the problem now. They were able to finally diagnose the problem. The serviceman spoke to the person from the electrical company directly, which was really helpful. I would use this company again in the future.

I have not had any problems with them. They are excellent and fast. They are efficient and they don't charge an arm and a leg. The price included parts and labor. They have been in business for a long time. One time I was desperate and needed a plumber quickly. They were the first one I called that could come quickly. On Wed. July 13th, I called Mike's Plumbing and Electrical to get an estimate of cost to replace a power pole. On the 14th, Sergio Garcia, their sales manager, came out. We spent about 15-20 minutes going over the details of the job,(taking out the old pole, digging the hole deeper, putting in a new pole, and the disconecting and reconnecting of everything attached to the pole). He entered information on an electronic pad of some sort and gave me a price quote of $450.00. I called my wife to check on what day we could schedule the work to be done and gave those dates to Sergio before he left. He said he would check with his office and call me as to which day the work could be done. About 3 hours later, Sergio returned to our facility. I was unavailable and he spoke with my wife. He said the office had made a mistake on the price quote and the actual price for the job we needed done would be $1475.00. He apologized for their mistake and he offered to subtract $200.00. We said we would get back to him. It was actually at this point that we went to Angie's list and Joined. We looked at the other electrical companies listed, read the information and we ended up calling Hetrick & Barber, Inc. They came out, we gave them the same information regarding the job we needed done that we had given to Mike's. They told us they needed to go back to the office to calculate the estimate. It took a couple of days, but they sent us a bid on July 18th for $400.00. We scheduled the work, they came out and completed the job very satisfactorily and we paid them the $400.00. If someone wants an electrical job done we highly recommend they call Hetrick & Barber and not Mike"s

Response from Mighty Mike's Plumbing, Electrical & HVAC
We thank you for the opportunity that you have given us to respond to the member's comments and posting. Please be assured that anytime we deal with a customer, or potential customer, our intent is always to provide the best possible service at the most affordable price. Having said that, I must stress that when we make a conscious effort to meet all of the local, state and national codes, prices may sometimes be driven to a point where the customer may feel that they are excessive. In the case with the member, when they initially called asking for a price to straighten their electrical service pole, a price quote was worked out based on the description that was given by the customer, but upon arriving at the site and seeing that the electrical pole in question was tilted to the point of it being a safety hazard, and that the electrical panel was not up to code for various reasons, a second price quote/option was presented to the customer. The first quote was to straighten the electrical pole and position deep enough in the ground so that it would be secure, however it was explained to the customer that the electrical violations on the existing electrical installation were still a safety hazard and that we strongly recommended updating the electrical pole to meet electrical code. The second price quote submitted was to completely update the electrical service thus bringing it up to code as needed. This second price quote that was given to the customer included a new pole, a new electrical meter enclosure, new electrical panel, and new wiring to the service mast, along with the needed electrical permit and a full 1 year warranty on all parts and labor. When I arrived to speak again to the member in person he was occupied, so he sent his wife to speak to me for approximately 25 minutes. I explained to her in detail what needed to be done and why it was important to bring the electrical service into compliance with state laws and codes. As per city and county officials, as of 8-19-2011 if the work was performed by another electrical company NO permits had been request/pulled by the electrical company doing the work and therefore if the job was done as stated by the member the job may have been performed illegally according to state and local laws. These laws are ultimately set in place not only to protect the homeowner, but also, those around the home in question as well as the power company employees and the actual power grid that may be affected by improper installations and safety hazards. Many efforts were made to explain this to the member and the landlord via phone calls and e-mails. At Mikes Plumbing & Electrical, Inc. we strive to maintain a high service standard for our clients and always preform our jobs up to and above state laws and codes which involves obtaining all the proper permits when necessary, and at times means that we may loose a potential client to other companies that may not enforce these strict standards. I must also say that even though we made trips out to the customer's residence on more than one occasion, we never presented the client any bill or invoice for this time. All our service visits and estimate were at no charge whatsoever to the customer. In all, I hope that if any work was performed for the member, it was done so in a manner that is safe and legal, and is in the best interest of everyone involved, not just the electrician that made the sale in this case.
