They did a good job and I would hire them again.

I pay $240 for annual service where they come out and check things twice a year.

We were recommended Gary at Payless by our parents, who also had high reviews. Gary came out quickly when their AC system froze into a block of ice right before a vacation, and he was able to replace it at a good price without selling any extra items they didn't need. Our existing AC/furnace/duct system was almost 19 years old so we obtained 8 quotes before deciding on Payless. Gary's first impression was different than any other AC place we have ever experienced. He was friendly, knowledgeable and professional. He wasn't sales-pitchy. We ultimately decided on Payless because we felt we could trust him (1st and foremost), price was competitive (one of the lowest), and Payless offered financing. Our job was rescheduled because of the rain, but Gary was sure to call us as soon as possible in advance in order to make arrangements. Each day, he and his crew were on time, cleaned up after themselves. He walked through and explained everything to us after the job was finished. He even came back out twice to check on a few of our concerns which ended up being iunrelated to their installation (we unluckily had a plumbing leak in the attic a week after the installation, and also a dead animal in our attic!). Gary was great, he came out to make sure it was nothing to do with the system. We love our new system. It is quiet, and it blows nice cold air! The only disadvantage is that we had our air grills moved, and Gary's team does not do sheetrock work. We had to hire a handyman for that. But, no big deal. Payless is trustworthy, has competitive pricing, and does great work. Most importantly, knowing that they would make it right (although, they got it right the first time!) They are our new go-to AC company!

I decided to talk to Gary Edmunds (the owner) about replacing old Trane system and putting in a new variable Trane XV20i cooling and heating system. I got quotes from both Air Specialist and Payless and decided to go with Payless system this time since I felt I will get much better customer care service from Gary than Air Specialist. It was the BEST decision I took selecting Payless cooling over Air Specialist who installed new Trane system in 2009. We had some issues with the Thermostat not reading the indoor temperature correctly and Gary took care of this issue very promptly. He has the best crew in the business Deion and Ricky. Both these guys took care of the problem I had with the thermostat. They came on time and stayed till we were confident that we resolved the issue. The problem was not solved in the first attempt. Again, it was not their fault. The builder when installed the a/c system in my house in 2001 never installed the thermostat at proper location which in under the a/c return. So, Ricky and Deoin moved the new thermostat under the a/c return and that solved the problem. These guys NEVER ever complained of anything and tried their best to find a solution. I really want to THANK YOU Gary Edmunds, Deion and Ricky for their excellent customer service and resolving this issue to my COMPLETE satisfaction.

Payless always does an excellent job and has the greatest prices. Gary Edmonds, who owns and runs the company has been a livesaver for installation of units in my former home and in my new home. I recommend him to all my friends and family. They always try to come as soon as possible and they're here to help - not to charge you for services and equipment that you don't need. We've had bad experiences with other companies just trying to sell, sell, sell and they have been so pushy and the service has been poor. Payless is a breath of fresh air compared to others that we have used. I highly recommend them to anyone in the Clear Lake, Friendswood, Pearland area.

Just a follow up to my previous review from Jan 2nd when Payless installed the system. I had to call because of two issues. First being that the system was not using the second stage and was not warming the house properly. Someone was over that day and It ended up being that a jumper had not been set to enable the second stage system. So now with the blower at top capacity, we noticed a couple days later a noise that ended up be a vibration in the heater. Called Gary and again someone was out that day and found there was a defect in the fan/motor. They called Trane for the parts and were told it would take over a month. We were OK and they would look into what to do next. Gary called me the next day and said that he wanted to come over to finish the repair and had the parts - he pulled them from another new unit. Things happen and I judge a person and a company by how they respond. I cannot be more pleased with the response by Gary and Payless Cooling and Heating. They stand behind their work and want to make sure the job is done right. Highly recommended company.

I had a 17 year old system that was installed by the builder that had a bad smart valve. We had been having some AC issues so decided to do a full system replacement. My first estimate was over $12K so for this amount of money I wanted a second opinion. I did a little research and found Payless Cooling and Heating. I was impressed by the number of comments about how honest Gary the owner was and I like doing business locally if I can so I decided to give them a call. I called at 9:00 AM on New Years Eve and got a 1 pm appointment but around 10 got a call from Gary and he said he could be over in just a few minutes if that was OK. Since the heat was out I was very happy he made the time to come earlier. He took a look at the system and had the same diagnosis and assessment of our system. It was the best decision to call Payless because my first impression with Gary was that he is honest, has integrity, and just a plain good person. My thought was this is the type of person that I would want to do business with. Then I got the estimate from him that was ~$3.5 K less for a better system with a better manufacturer warranty. So, I decided to go with Payless. He started to call his installers to do the job on New Years Day but I told him we could wait, so he took the time to show me how I could start the furnace manually till they could get in to do the job. Well they installed the system and it is working great. Gary came first thing this morning as promised with the system and his team installed the system today. After the install was complete he did a walk through to ensure everything was done properly and go through the system with me and address all of my questions. Since this is the winter and we did a full system upgrade, Gary said he will be back this spring to ensure things are good with the AC and will also do the winter inspection. So far I can't be more than pleased. I will followup after each checkup to let everyone know how things go over the long run. But from a first experience so far with Payless Cooling and Heating, it has been outstanding. Let me also say that the other company I was using was also on Angie's list and highly rated and have been very happy with their service in the past - very honest and only doing the minimal repair needed. But their cost was significantly higher, so would encourage you to get additional estimates for major repairs.

I am very skeptical when calling outside contractors. I discovered the company in the Pearland Best magazine. The service call was initiated in Aug of 2012 because my 2 yr old AC units were freezing up and I wanted an independent-from-the-builder 3rd party. Payless had an A+ rating from the BBB versus the installer's D Rating. Payless showed up on time and as requested. They were able to diagnose both leaky evaporator coils with both UV light and the visual buildup of oil (freon) inside the evaporator chamber. I was able to use builder's warranty to change out both coils costing me only the Payless service call. They did a good job in 2012 so I called then back to do the service checkup in 2013. Both systems were evaluated as being in good health. I recommend this company.
