The biggest problem with the whole job was that Jeff didn't keep an eye on his contractors. He essentially subcontracted all of the work, as many pool contractors do. As Jeff's office was about 40 miles from the job site, he wasn't really around too much to keep an eye on them and ensure they were doing the job according to the plans. Due to a language barrier, I had a difficult time communicating with his subcontractors, who ran a length of electrical wire incorrectly. The wire was supposed to end up behind the pool house, but instead stopped under the middle of the pool house. After trying and trying to get Jeff to fix it, I ultimately gave up and dug it out from underneath the sidewalk it was hidden under and fixed it myself. Truth be told, most of the work was great, however much of it was not. In some of the stone work, they mortared where they should have instead used an expansion joint, which will ultimately lead to cracking. They also had to re-pour about 25% of the pool deck, where the rebar was actually laying below the concrete, as opposed to within the concrete. He also became unresponsive after he received payment for the job, forcing me to fix the electrical wiring issue myself.
Description of Work: He installed a swimming pool.

Original contact and bid process went well. Prompt response during bid process and contract signing. Once contract was signed and deposit paid, things changed drastically. The further we got into the process, the longer it took to get anything done. Dwayne (our contact) was always very professional on the phone and in person, but we rarely saw him. The work crews never came when they were scheduled and it would take multiple phone calls and schedule changes to get someone to show up. I hired this company because they were recommended by a friend and had been remodeling pools for a long time. I had difficulty finding a contractor in my area for a remodel job. Everyone wants to do new construction only. I thought that since this company had been in business for years that they would know exactly how to get the job done and done well. I don't consider myself hard to please. The end result has left me unhappy. The overall look of the deck is what I wanted, but they placed the sleeves in the cement to hold the ladder and handrail incorrectly, so that my handrail and ladder could not be put back into place. After weeks of controversy over the matter, Jeff's finally bought a new handrail to fit the holes, but the new rail is not sturdy and moves when you use it. I feel like it is unsafe. The sleeves for placing the ladder were placed too close to the edge of the pool, so the ladder wouldn't rest against the pool wall as intended. Jeff's chiseled out the sleeves from the cement, drilled some new holes for them (which had to be a good bit larger than the sleeves for the tightening bolt to fit) and then patch around the sleeves to make them fit the too large holes they drilled. The first set of holes was then patched. The cement is a different color from the original pour, so the patch job is very obvious and ugly. I have complained about the patching and am unhappy that I paid $9300 for a pool deck that is now patched. My handrail is not sturdy and gives way enough to be a fall hazard if someone leans on it very much entering or exiting the pool. I am waiting to pay the remainder of the $9300 until I see what Jeff's decides to do with the cement patching. They tell me that with time, the cement will match. I'm not holding my breath on that one! Also, the day they finally poured the concrete was a very hot day. The cement truck broke down and it appeared that the cement was getting too dry as they were trying to work it. The rounded edges that overhang the pool have some chunks missing on the underside and we find rocks and small pieces of concrete that continue to fall into the pool daily. Can't help but wonder how much will keep falling. I think the mix was too dry and set up too quickly before it was properly packed and formed. These people pour concrete every day. You'd think they would not have any trouble getting it done correctly. Other small sources of irritation are that the liner tract had to be replaced before pouring the concrete. They didn't bring enough liner tract, so they cut it and used part of the old tract (which is discolored from the sun) and it doesn't match. They also got cement in the tract, so when the liner was being installed, the liner crew had to chisel cement out of the tract and in places the overhanging cement totally blocked the tract. Jeff's had to send someone out with a cement saw to cut back some of the overhang to expose the tract so that the liner could be installed. Jeff's crew also changed the corners of the steps (after the liner man had taken all the measurements and the liner was manufactured). This changed the fit of the liner so we now have a few wrinkles in the liner that would not have been there if the steps had not been altered. I'm very disappointed because this was a major expenditure for our family and I was so excited about having a beautiful new pool. Now I have a patched deck that looks cheap and tacky. This whole process has been a comedy of errors and I can't understand why this company doesn't have more pride in their work.
Description of Work: Demo, removal, and replacement of cement deck around existing pool.
