Today. Walter, of Capitol Chimney Service, came out to help. He arrived on time, was professional and courteous. He immediately demonstrated his knowledge of the fireplaces and potential issues. He was conscientious about keeping the work areas clean, and quickly had both fireplaces working properly. Now, thanks to Walter, we are enjoying a beautiful fire on Christmas this dreary cold day. I couldn't be more pleased with his knowledge, helpfulness and overall service. Excellent!
Description of Work: We have two gas fireplaces. The fireplaces have been very difficult to keep functioning properly since we bought our home two years ago. The pilot lights wouldn't stay lit, the switch to turn them on didn't work consistently, and they had become non-functional. We had multiple fireplace repair services come out without any luck. So our fireplaces sat cold and dark.

Awesome! I had a situation where critters kept getting in my chimney and also an issue with odor. I thought I needed my cap replaced, but he was able to create a screen to solve the problem for a few hundred bucks:) And let me tell you my roof is not easy to access. I had another company give me an estimate for a several thousand dollars to fix the thing. Capitol Chimney is a very honest company! I will definitely use them next I need anything chimney related.

They were there to repair my propane fireplace. They came out and were looking at some of the wiring to repair the igniter however, after they were finished the ignitor was still not lighting. I know it is getting gas, because I can light the fireplace using a lighter. The contractor did not seem to know what he was doing and what he did do did not have any effect on the outcome.

He was punctual, technically gifted and extremely neat. He was cordial and engaging but put the task at hand as the first priority. Everything has worked perfectly and we are enjoying the new fireplace with the remote. Couldn't have asked for a better, and more price effective experience.
Description of Work: Walter was fantastic and did a perfect job. He assessed the problem and recommended replacement of logs and the addition of a remote system. He installed all of the new logs and the remote in under an hour.

It went well. The serviceman came when he said he would and was able to figure out the jigsaw puzzle of cast iron fireplace pieces and fit them into the correct fireplaces.--Each fireplace was different. It wasn't as easy as it may sound. He also installed the new metal back to the cast iron insert since the original fire brick was missing. I was happy with the work. I was charged the minimal service fee. Again, these are nonfunctional fireplaces and are for looks only.
Description of Work: I have three antique non-functional fireplaces. I'd had the tile on the fireplaces replaced and in doing that, the tile contractor pulled all of the cast iron inserts along with other fireplace parts out.--There were cast iron pieces everywhere and I didn't know what fitted where. I hired Capitol Chimney to put everything back into place correctly, plus I'd fabricated a new back to one of the cast iron inserts and I needed it fitted into place.

Walt failed to make scheduled appointment; they failed to return calls in a timely manner. They charged me $95 for an"inspection" without having previously informed me their would be such a charge and then rushed off promising me an estimate for the work he thought should be done. Walt bragged about having already done 9 "inspections" that day. The estimate never arrived and he didn't return my follow up call. He's in the business of of collecting inspection fees, not actually providing a service or solving people's issues.
Description of Work: They finally arrived to provide an analysis of my problem.

Our fireplace hadn't been cleaned in years. The flue was stuck barely open and needed to be hammered to open more. There were bricks whose mortar was coming out. Basically, a mess. Walter cleaned, hammered the lue to open it more and sprayed the hinges with dw-40. He also patched the mortar in the bricks.
Description of Work: Walter cleaned the chimney, vacuumed, helped to open the stuck flue wider and patched some bricks. He was friendly and respectful.

Had an appointment to get chimney cleaned. Received a call from provider which stated he could not make appointment because he was on a job that took longer than expected. He then stated he would come the next day. That was fine by me, I understand things come up. Provider never showed up next day. I left messages and none were returned. Not happy with service.

Based on a referral from the owner of a condo/apartment services company, I called Walter Clarke, of Capitol Chimney Service at 512-834-2261 on Dec 6, 2012, with this list of items I would like to have done: 1. Check outside chimney structure. 2. Repair metal ashes clean-out door, including mortaring bricks surrounding it on the back of the chimney. 3. Repair with mortar the crack in the brick wall on outside of house.. 4. Check and straighten, if necessary, the chimney cap. 5. Check and clean the inside of the chimney. 6. Replace or repair damper. 7. Seal firebricks, if needed. 8. Install my new set of gas fire-logs. Mr. Clarke said he could handle all of those items, that he was very busy, and the earliest he could get to my job was 8:30am on Dec 20th. That was fine because our family was coming from all around the country for Christmas, and I looked forward to having a lovely fire for our family gatherings. On the 20th, Mr. Clarke did not show up until after lunch, when he came into the house, looked inside the chimney, lit the gas line and showed us where we had a gas leak under the fire bricks, went out back and returned saying it was too windy to get on the roof, told me that it might cost up to $500 to repair my gas line and that he would be back at 8:30a on Dec 31 to do the work. That put a damper on my plans to use the fireplace for our family's Christmas gatherings. On Dec 31, Mr. Clarke and his helper arrived at 9:45am. Mr. Clarke removed the brass and glass firedoors, then took down the mesh firescreen, looked up the chimney and told me it did not need cleaning and the damper did not need replacing or repairing, and left his helper chipping away at the firebricks while he went to find a part he needed to repair the gas line. He returned without the part and he and the helper left to go get some lunch. After lunch, they set about finishing the gas line, re-installing the firebricks, caulking and painting the fire box, sawing off the metal brackets that had held the mesh firescreen, and installing the firelogs. They were cleaning up and ready to leave by 4pm. After I reminded him about the ashes rake-out door, he sent his helper out into the cold, rainy afternoon to repair it. The repair is not something that you would show off as good workmanship. I asked about caulking the crack in the outside brick wall and re-mortaring the loose bricks on the outside of the fireplace. He replied that he did not have the right mortar with him and that everything was closed because of New Year's Eve, and that he would be back within a week to finish the job. I asked him to write on the receipt, for the $920.00 I paid him, that he would be back to finish the work within 14 days (which I thought was more realistic) and he did write that and we both initialed it. The black-painted firebox looks very nice, and the firelogs work beautifully, but the first time we opened the damper, the handle fell off the damper. I replaced it once, then it fell off again, so my husband repaired it. I have called Mr. Clarke 2 times since he made the repairs on Dec 31, 2012, once talking with him when he promised to return within the week, and another time I left a message asking when he would return. It has been 3 months -90 days-and he has not returned. I am surprised the chimney did not need sweeping. I have lived in my house for 32 years and the chimney has been swept once in all that time. The handle falling off the damper after I had asked him to inspect it and repair it was sloppy work. Telling me that the mesh fire screen was attached to the brass and glass fire doors was false, and my agreement to his cutting off the metal brackets that had been welded to the original firebox to hold this special-sized mesh screen was based on his mis-information. His not returning to complete his agreed upon and paid-for work, as he verbally promised and wrote and signed with his own hand, is extremely disappointing. Mr. Clarke needed to do only a few things differently, and to keep his word, and I would have been a thoroughly happy customer and ranked him A on all counts -- even though I thought then, as I still think, that I over-paid for the services received. I could have lived happily with that, however, if I did not have to smell a sooty chimney, see that crack in the outside wall and see those loose bricks on the chimney inside the house every day.
Description of Work: Mr. Clarke and his helper removed brass and glass fire doors. Removed mesh fire screen. Removed firebricks in floor of fireplace to replace corroded gas line. Replaced gas line. Reinstalled firebricks. Caulked fireplace wall firebricks. Painted firebox black. Installed owner-purchased gas fire log set. After being reminded, he reset and mortared bricks around the metal ashes rake-out door on back of chimney. Even though these repairs were in the initial request, Mr. Clarke did not repair 2 loose bricks on indoor fireplace surround. Did not fill in missing mortar around bricks on outside wall of house.

Our chimney was not drawing properly and Walter came out to take a look. He tried just cleaning it first (which was the easiest least expensive option) and when that did not solve the problem he extended the flue. This was for a manufactured fireplace that came from a company that is no longer in business so he had to search out and find pipe to fit. It has worked great since then and we will definitely call Capitol Chimney for any future work.

Our fireplace needed glass door inserts to deal with smoke coming into the room due to a previous remodeling of the house. We talked to several repair services and chose Walter and Capital Chimney service due to the professional and prompt approach shown from the first call. The installation was done when promised, the work was done cleanly and Walter answered all our questions completely. Even our dogs liked him. The finished project exceeded our expectations. I contacted Walter and was impressed by how friendly he was on the phone. He was very upbeat and gave us an appointment the quickest than other chimney repair companies could. Walter set a time and date with us to install panel and cap off the gas starter pipe. He showed up, on time, and began work immediately. He was very sensitive to the fact that we have 8 month old twins and was honest about how much noise his work would take when he was cutting through the surface to make space for the panel. I appreciated his taking into consideration my situation and shows he cares about his clientele more than just making money off of them. He worked incredibly fast and was finished in less time he had said. The price was $350 for both services and it looks great! I will use Walter again when I need another chimney service.
