Todd and his crew did a great job of replacing dead or poorly growing shrubs in our front beds that are shaded by large oak trees and that had lost all their mulch during Harvey. He added new shrubs that matched the remaining hardy ones including Pittosporum and Cleyera to bring our front shrub beds into compliance with our H.O.A.'s (First Colony's) landscaping requirements. He also re-located some other remaining foxtails and filled-in with other hardy, low-maintenance and shade-tolerant giant liriope and Aztec grasses. His crew also re-conditioned the beds, loosening the clay, adding garden soil and fertilizer and topping with hardware mulch. They properly trimmed/shaped the existing shrubs and used fresh, healthy, well-shaped and sized replacement plants (from a commercial-only nursery) that are guaranteed for a year. He was responsive and flexible with scheduling around weather events. He was on-time for the start and completion of the work and provided an accurate and reasonable cost estimate and had helpful suggestions for our modest-sized re-landscaping project. We highly recommend him and his crew for this type and scale of landscaping project.

I seem to remember that we had some difficulty reaching them regarding a plant that died and I don't believe they ever replaced it. It has been 5 years since this work done, so I can't verify for certain what happened. That aside, Todd and his crew were very professional, personable, and we were very pleased with his design plan.

I really liked them, I like the guy, I felt like he did good decent work. I had a patio paver area put in and I think they could have done that a little bit differently cause we use have some work redone and some of the plants that he planted I think he planted that particular type at the wrong time and they ended up dying but anything that died he replaced. So he did really good on that respect. And he came back and he worked on the patio but it's still not exactly what I wanted, he's always been very good about coming back and redoing if he needs to.

Scheduling and implementing went right on schedule. Garden Guy was great in supplying sample pavers etc. This company did a fantastic job. Both the front and back yards looks fantastic. Todd was responsive to a couple late changes my husband wanted to make and very flexible in working them in. We love our landscaping and it gets better with time. The few times we called for advice in maintaining the work they have been totally responsive. We would definitely use The Garden Guy again.
Description of Work: We had a 1986 home that needed old tired landscaping out front removed and replaced. Back yard that was a plain weedy muddy lawn. Todd came out twice - once to design the front flower beds and strip along the driveway. A second time to design patio, fire pit area and landscape new floor beds in back yard. Todd quickly understand our needs and the designs totally reflected our wishes.

They were pricey. The grass that he planted was not the right type for the area and then some of the flowers and the flower beds that he planted didn’t last more than two or three months. He has a warranty but they don’t warranty their grass at all. We had asked him to put in whatever he recommended and we ended up replacing what he put in. We had to replace the grass and all the plants that they put it, because it just didn’t last.

Price: The service was expensive, but you get what you pay for. We chose him because of his knowledge, background, and because of his relationship and cooperation with a highly recommended sprinkler system company. Quality: The gardens are great. We are happy we invested. Todd's design has created a space that is a joy year round, and we receive a lot of compliments. We have recommended him to many of our friends and neighbors, and Garden Guy has made many installations in our neighborhood as a result. Most of the plants have been self-maintaining. Some of them have overgrown the space available, in large part because his maintenance schedule has been so irregular. Responsiveness: We are not really sure why Todd even offered the quarterly maintenance, but that was one of his selling points. We were initially unable to afford the service and tried to take care of the gardens ourselves, or just schedule his services once a year, but soon we realized we did not have the time to keep them up and we also needed his expertise to keep our investment healthy. Curiously, from the beginning, we had to hound him to get any maintenance service scheduled. Contacted him by phone, email, text. After the short initial DIY time, we asked repeatedly to be put on either an annual, semi-annual or the regular quarterly maintenance schedule, but for some reason he could not or would not do any of this. Once he arrived and did the work, the gardens always thrived, so we wanted to continue the relationship. He seems really really busy, but so are we. Because it was so hard to reach him, we provided details in writing about what we thought was needed, and included suggestions about changes or replacement plants we were considering. Todd is very knowledgeable, and we always felt his input and collaboration were vital. The maintenance service is expensive, so we always asked for an estimate in advance to help us understand the costs involved, and to give us the option of delaying any replacements or changes that exceeded our budget. Punctuality: It might take 3 or 4 months to get on the schedule (or longer!), but once estimates were received, they were always clear, and the work progressed promptly as scheduled. Professionalism: We asked him repeatedly to tell us if he no longer offered the maintenance service so we could find another company. He would eventually respond with a schedule after multiple contacts from us, but with no explanation for the delay. However, getting him to respond and put us on the schedule might take three or four months. Then in spring 2014, after stating he would put us on the schedule the next week or so, he quit answering us altogether. So odd, after all our referrals for him, and after all these years. We hope he is OK.
Description of Work: Installed gorgeous gardens in the front and back yard in 2007. As part of the initial sales, he offered quarterly maintenance service to keep the gardens in top shape.

The Garden Guy and his wife were very responsive from the start and was able to come to my house for a consultation within just a few days of my request. He was on-time, polite, and even covered his shoes when in our house. He gave us a great plan for landscaping that was clearly tailored to our small backyard and took into account our requests. He was able to start the work about two weeks later, which was fairly quick based on many other quotes I received from other landscapers. He came over promptly on the day of service and brought his foreman and two helpers. They finished the work in just under 3 hours. They first removed 3 ligustrums, revamped the soil, and laid out a set of border stones. Then put on a fresh bed of mulch. Next came the planting of a mix of 26 shrubs: azaleas, camellias, and sweet viburnums. They watered them all and cleaned up nicely. Garden Guy notified me that 3 of the camellias were not available yet, so removed the amount from our bill and planned to come back to plant them once available. The Garden Guy has great attention to detail - evident when he asked his guys to adjust the position of a few shrubs to better compliment our house window layout and take into account drip lines from the roof. What was a bonus for us was that they removed the remaining old grass sod that I had not completed yet, without charge! I had re-sodded half of my grass the weekend before and they saved me probably 2 hours of work. They also hauled away a load of extra dirt from my earlier sod removing efforts. My wife was very happy when she came back to see the results. The Garden Guy was able to brighten up a yard that had limited light exposure and create a modern clean look. We were very pleased with the outcome and highly recommend Garden Guy.

We had the Garden Guy plant a significant amount of plants and flowers in our front yard, including 2 trees. The two trees were producing leaves when planted but shortly after started to lose leaves. One tree struggled along and eventually did well but the second tree died. I called the Garden Guy team a couple of times and even had him out to take a look but he dismissed it, saying that it would come back. Even though they guaranteed the work, the didn't replace the tree. We eventually had to remove the tree. I gave them a C because all other work was done successfully but I wouldn't use them again due to their service.

Garden Guy offers design services, which is what really set him apart from the competition. We talked with (3) other landscape installers and (2) of them quoted to us, but Garden Guy was the only one that offered a real plan & vision for our yard. Garden Guy also tailoring a phased approach to the work that helps us manage cash flow. Garden Guy's service was professional and was handled with integrity. (In fact, all of the landscaping professionals we found through Angie's List were professional and managed their business with integrity.) Genuine professionals project competence and ability, which is what we found in all phases of the project working with Garden Guy. We marked the pricing as C for average, as the pricing was high compared to other offerings, but there were intangible values that Garden Guy brought to the work. Also, one of the plants is suffering from too much water (roof runoff) so we marked Quality a touch away from perfect. All other plants (20+) are doing great. If we could share pictures, they would really showcase the work. Clean-up was very good and the work crew was professional. No issues at all. A few weeks after the work, Garden Guy swung past our property to see how things looked. He gave us a courtesy call with a few recommendations to keep everything looking great. Overall, we're very pleased with the work. We recommend Garden Guy without reservations.
Description of Work: Garden Guy removed and replaced the landscaping in our front yard. This work included two beds, an accent bed at the top of our driveway and the main bed in the front yard. In addition, Garden Guy prepared a comprehensive, multiphase proposal for us, starting with the front yard, options for the front yard, sprinkler system, and the back yard. Garden Guy also prepared a sketch of the proposed work that we used as a plan and for HOA approval. This review is for the front yard only.

It went well. We had some issues with scheduling, but that was as much my fault as it was his, I was in and out of the state. He did a good job. He was very responsive. I had flagstone walkway put in, and the mortar was crumbling and he had a couple of the guys come out and fix it and it looks amazing. I also called him regarding a red bud tree, that wasn't doing very well and he came and check on it for me.

Their work was good, but their business philosophy was unacceptable to me. In 2006 they received some negative publicity about their refusal to work for clients they believed to be homosexual. As I found that business practice repugnant, I fired them. That is why I graded them an "F" for their professionalism - or lack thereof.

I had let the lawn area behind and to the side of my garage run amok, so decided to put in a little bird- and butterfly-friendly retreat back there. It's part of the yard that can't be seen from the house. The pool equipment is back there, along with monkey bars and a chin-up bar that had been left by the previous owner. In a separate part of the yard I had some bamboo along the back fence that was beginning to encroach on the neighbor's back yard. (Even though It's not the running bamboo, but the clumping kind, it does eventually begin to spread.) I called Todd and was very pleased with his response to my questions and requests. He came promptly to all appointments and kept me informed along the way. He did a rough sketch of what he was going to do, and what he intended to plant. I asked him to substitute one kind of tree for another, which he did. I had done some research on the requirements for a root barrier, and Todd suggested exactly the kind of thing I had read about. His guys had to cut the bamboo back a little more than I wanted in order to install the root barrier, but I'm sure it will fill in again. The rest of the garden looks great. I waited to write this review until the plants had had a little time to establish themselves, and they're doing fine. Some are already twice the size they were when he planted them. It will take some time for the roses to create the arbor and climb up on the fence, but they're progressing nicely. And the best thing is that I began to see Monarch butterflies right away, and have seen them almost every day since. Too cool!
Description of Work: Trim bamboo & put in root barrier Remove grass & weeds from lawn area behind & to the side of the garage Plant butterfly/hummingbird-friendly plants & tree Plant climbing roses to make arbor over monkey bars & to eventually cover fence Put river rock where pool equipment is stored Install flagstone pathway

I contacted Todd to come out and give us his thoughts on how we could best landscape our front and back yard. He came at the scheduled time, and was very polite and helpful. I soon after received the 2 drawing(sketches on graph paper) of his ideas along with a detailed quote on how much the job would cost. He was also nice enough to split things out into phases, which was very helpful. For those of us DIY-ers out there, it's nice that we can pay for a service like this to get some guidance and an essential "shopping list" of materials needed from a professional for a small fee.

We initially enjoyed working with Garden Guy. Our reason for not giving a favorable review is that once the job was paid for, we could not get the company to respond to follow-up requests for items covered under a one year guarantee. Specifically we had concerns about puddling near the house on the patio overlay, a hollow sound under the overlay in front of the back door, and viability of two of the trees. Emails, phone messages and even messages left personally with the owner's wife were not returned. After almost a year, we finally spoke with the owner and he promised to come out on a certain date to make everything right. He neither showed nor called. At that point it was obvious that promises and a guarantee from Garden Guy were not worth anything. One of the trees was dead and we had to dig it out and dispose of it ourselves. We are submitting this review now because Angie's List asked us to complete a review on Garden Guy.
