I don't really remember the exact date or how much I paid, but I felt it was more than fair and I was very satisfied with his work. Very professional, courteous, and friendly. Very knowledgable and gave good advice regarding my next installation of a medicine cabinet. My house is crooked and he was able to make me understand what I needed to do to hang my cabinet straight. I would definitely use him again
Description of Work: I needed a light bar installed in a bathroom.

It took much longer than expected and he had to be paid in full before he would complete the work. I also asked for the remaining paint but was given a quart of it; given how much paint was purchased I did feel as he probably kept at least a gallon. The price he quoted ended up being a rather low estimate as the final price was much higher even with the additional work performed. He was nice but as the time dragged on it became less of a person being hired to do the work and more like he was doing me a favor for free; I couldn't wait for him to be done. I had recommended him to several people including my sister, he really screwed over my sister which shocked me. The quality of work done for me vs what was done for my sister was astonishing, my house looked great hers house was a mess. He was outright rude to my sister and changed his price daily. His contracts are written to benefit him and contain many loopholes, if you use him make sure that it is plainly stated how many days to complete and what are considered acceptable exceptions as to a delay. I got the excuse it was too windy. It's always windy in Midland and I don't see how that prevents anyone from installing a door. Set the payment terms, if you are paying for the paint go to the store of your choice and buy the brand you want or oversee what brand he is buying, dont trust he will buy what you ask. I told him Behr brand and paid for that brand and he bought glidden and kept the difference. Ask for a list of people he will use to work on the project, he should know his employees. One of the guys he brought I don't think he had even met him before that morning, I didn't appreciate it and ended up changing my plans so I could remain home to watch my home. Overall, he did the work and the quality was acceptable; after hearing about and seeing work he had done for others I got the impression I lucked out.
Description of Work: He sanded and painted the trim, patio and garage door, installed security doors, replaced porch light and replaced a faucet. The work done was okay, it took a long time though 2 weeks more than he quoted. Sometimes he'd show up and other days he wouldn't and didn't call. I was quoted that it would take just a few days as there wasn't a lot of prep work that needed doing, just some chalking and replacement of a piece of wood. Different men would show up with him and he would leave them at the house unsupervised while he went to other job sites or home.

He came in did estimate after thorough discussion of what we wanted. We ordered the materials but he picked them up and delivered them to the site. His crew were careful about getting things completed and cleaning up an mess. He kept us updated as to how things were going. If we needed a change, he was very understanding and compliant. Job was completed on time and he made sure we were happy before leaving.

Started in the middle of May... the work went through June. He used unlicensed workers for electrical. The painters didn't finish the work, I had to paint the interior trim throughout a 3,000 sq. ft. house. He misrepresented and contracted out most of the work to others. He was never here to supervise the workers. I told them not to install the new carpet until after all the interior painting was done - they installed it half way through the painting. Some of the painting was sloppy and I had to repaint areas myself. Unbeknownest to me, for the wall papering I had contracted for all three bathrooms and part of the utlity room, he sub contracted it out and without persmission had the walls plastered prior to the wall papering. The cost was astronomical and the man he contracted the unauthorized plastering was sexually harrassing me, coming up behind me and rubbing himself on me. (The guy was totally creepy and I complained to Dan but nothing was done about it. I felt very threatened by this sub-contracted plastered and would find him in other areas of my home unlocking windows. I had a prowler for several years there after, trying to get into windows. As it turned out, this sub-contractor was arrested last year for rape). I had bought my own wall paper and it was top of the line and very expensive, yet the sub-contractor that he hired to hang the wall paper used some defective paste which ate through the wall paper or decolored it on the wall in large areas all over. In installing a new front storm door, his worker set it up where the door would not open fully, but barely wide enough where you could squeeze through the door and the doorframe. Workers would not show up at scheduled times. He had people doing electrical work that were not even electricans, much less licensed. My original estimate for the work to be done was at $5,000. After the end of 6 weeks I had paid out over $10,000 and all the problems they created were not fixed. In addition, I was buying new major brand appliances. He insisted he could get a better deal for me and bought and installed my new refrigerator, washer and gas dryer. The cost for the 3 was an additonal $2600. All three had to be repaired within the first month and continually there after, about once every 3 months. The refrigerator completely died within 5 years. Someone stole $5,000 cash from my hidden cash box during the time they worked on my house - and never left the house during any time that they were here working on it. Dan comes across as a very sweet and knowledgable person. In reality he is a shady contractor/handyman who is a liar and will defraud his customers. I had to hire other people to either complete the unfinished work or fix the shoddy work that was done.
Description of Work: Bought house that hadn't been lived in for 2 1/2 years. It needed a lot of work - painting, carpet, electrical, wall papering, new storm doors.

First, after being paid 1/2 to start, he didn't show up for a full week. It took him six weeks to paint the exterior of the house (2500 sq. feet). He never finished the job but demanded payment when he was almost done. He said he was done. He did not finish agreed upon work. He padded the bill. He quoted one price and then charged another. He used the wrong color paint and wrong brand and refused to give me the leftover paint. He wrote the contract to benefit himself and was very calculating in doing so. I was very trusting, He seemed so nice at first. Do not trust this crook! He was very unprofessional in his work and the way he spoke to me. I cannot express just how badly this guy acted and how badly he worked! I urge everyone to steer clear of him. He is a bad man.
Description of Work: Exterior painting of home. Simple electrical. Installation of screen doors. Faucet installation.

Response from Dan Dougherty
First of all, I went into an agreement to paint the exterior of her home. I wrote an agreement/contract and submitted it to her. She read it and signed it. I agree that I received 1/2 prior to starting (per agreement) then came down with the flu (under doctors care) for about a weeks time. I called her and informed her of the fact and she said no problem and for me to get better. (I had painted her sister's house prior). I then started work on her home. When doing the prep work I found extensive damage due to termites so there was extensive repairs to be done prior to painting. She agreed to the cost of extra repairs and was billed accordingly. There was alot of scraping, filling, and sanding due to the home wasn't primed prior to the previous painting, also alot of dryrot. At the time I was ready to paint the home, she didn't want me to paint until the new roof was on. On Monday she told me that the roofers were going to start on that Tuesday (they didn't). The roofers started on the following Monday and it took 4 days to install the roof. That is 3 weeks; she was not my only job to do. While waiting for roof to be installed, I did other jobs. She gave me a sample paint to apply to her home (canoe) which I had paint supplier match. I should note she had me do other things around her home during the whole time I was there. IE:1) Repair gas line leak in backyard. 2) Repair electrical switch. 3) Run wiring and install lighting above count in kitchen. 4) After painting-install 4 security doors on home. I did alot of repairs to the home prior to painting that I did not tell her or charge her for. As I was working on her home she stated that she wanted the storage bldg and gates in her block fence painted. I informed her that that would be extra. She stated, "that should be part of painting the house". I informed that it was not. She wants everything for nothing. I have agreement signed by her. There is no agreement to repair threshold, wood trim in laundry room or painting of back porch cover. I did paint front porch cover and back porch patio cover (not in agreement). Antique white that she told me she wanted. In her complaint to you she state, "colony buff"; this is the first time I heard of that color. I have no knowledge of anything being broken by myself or my help. I returned left over paint and gave it to her husband. There was on about a quart left over. One more thing I would like to add: After painting her home we had a terrible hail storm that beat and damaged the paint on east end of home, garage doors and patio cover. She was out of town so I took the liberty of repairing and painting the damaged areas. Approx. 5 hrs. I billed her for time and material which she refuses to pay. She stated, " you should have asked if we wanted it fixed". I have than fulfilled my agreement with her and will not return to her home again. This individual wants everything for nothing!
