I made an appointment for them to inspect my water tank. I explained that the problem was a buildup of calcium, and asked them if this problem was able to be resolved. They said yes and came over to inspect. Yet, after a very short time, the technician told me that the tank could not be fixed and needed to be replaced.

Response from Baker Brothers Plumbing, Air & Electric
We're sorry that this member was dissatisfied with the diagnosis regarding her water heater. When she called, she asked our representative if calcium build-up can be resolved, and it can in some situations. However, once our technician saw the problem firsthand, he recommended she replace her old water heater. It can be much more expensive to attempt to repair an older water heater than to replace it. There is no guarantee that if repairs are made, that there will not be further problems, which can be costly to the homeowner. Our technician determined it would be better to replace the water heater than to put her through the time and expense of continuing repairs that might or might not fix the problem. We regret that she was not satisfied with our conclusion, however, we try to provide the best solution to each customer’s problem based on their individual situation. If she reconsiders, we will be very happy to provide her with the quality service she has a right to expect.

Person installing the Roman faucet in master apparently didn't know what he was doing so had to follow the instructions. He was looking at the wrong instructions and sawed off part of the rough in portion, which was the wrong thing to do. They had to order another piece and come back another day. Way, way over priced for what the do and their quality of work.
Description of Work: Installed Roman style faucet in master bath, changed shower faucet, changed water cut offs in kitchen.

Response from Baker Brothers Plumbing, Air & Electric
The member is correct in saying the technician read the installation instructions that came with the tub valve, but this is necessary to install it per the manufacturer's guidelines. Unfortunately, these instructions were generic in nature and did not cover every type of valve made by this manufacturer. The plumber realized this too late. We did order another piece for the valve and installed it correctly on another day. In addition, the Service Manager talked with the member and refunded him $200. Baker Brothers takes pride in the quality of service we provide and regret it when anyone is dissatisfied. We made a sincere effort to make restitution for any inconvenience the customer may have experienced in addition to taking the necessary steps to correct the problem and complete the job to his satisfaction.

The servicemen were prompt and polite. After opting for the new toilet, they gave me the option to pick the model I wanted from what they carried. While I certainly was not going to spend hours in big-box store looking for a toilet, I appreciated having some options and going online to compare them. The new toilet is higher in back and a little wider than the old one. As a result, it was necessary to cut part of a shelf. They were prepared for the task and did a very neat job. (This was not an issue since I will be remodeling in a few years.) The whole job was completed in just a couple of hours. Baker Brothers installs lids that are easy to remove for cleaning. The serviceman showed me how to operate the clips to remove the lid. Too cool for that hard to clean area of the toilet! Overall, the experience went very well.
Description of Work: After returning from a business trip to discover that the toilet was leaking, I called in Baker Brothers to fix the annoying and wasteful problem. My expectations were simple - just replace the flushing mechanism. However, the serviceman explained that the cost of rebuilding the toilet would be $350, but for only two or three hundred dollars more, I could get a new, more efficient toilet that would outlast the rebuilt toilet. After considering the options, I went with the new toilet.

They promptly arrived, and they did what they said they were going to. They charged what they said they were going to charge. The only negative thing was that they had to cut a whole in the drywall which wasn't fixed before they left, but I was pleased overall with the experience.

After a couple of estimates, Baker Brothers came in, gave a fair estimate, made recommendations that were excellent, even advising against a more expensive option that we thought we wanted. They got our business. Great service and very thorough. We would use them again.

The pipe is in our basement very close to an outside wall and up in the floor joists, so it was quite difficult to access. On the first visit to give us an estimate, Baker Brothers thought they would have to remove brick from the house and fix the pipe from the outside. But when the plumbers came to do the work, they were able to access the pipe by cutting a small piece out of one of the floor joists, so no brick removal was necessary. The plumbers were very professional and did an excellent job. I did, however, have a few price issues. The written estimate provided to me was itemized and included an amount ($350) for brick removal and reinstatement. Even though the plumbers did not have to remove brick to complete the repair, they wanted to collect the additional $350. I spoke with the Baker Brothers office twice to resolve the issue before paying for the repairs, and ultimately, we settled on an additional $150 because the plumbers had to cut the floor joist. I thought that was quite expensive for that work, but agreed to pay it. The other price issue involved correctly applying both the Angie's List coupon and the amount I paid for the service call Baker Brothers made to give me an estimate. When Baker Brothers came out to give me an estimate of the repair cost, I paid $39.50, which I was told they charge in case I decided not to have the work done or hired another company. But, if I decided to have Baker Brothers do the repairs, the $39.50 would be applied to the total price of the repair, and that fact is noted on the written estimate. When it came time to pay for the repair, however, Baker Brothers balked at deducting the $39.50 that I previously paid from the cost of the repairs saying that they gave me the Angie's List discount, and they do not give two discounts on the same job. When I explained that the $39.50 was not a discount, but was the amount I paid when they gave the estimate, and that it was noted on the estimate that the $39.50 would be applied to the total cost of the repairs, Baker Brothers grudgingly deducted it. Despite these price issues, I would use Baker Brothers again because they did an excellent job. But the experience has reminded me how important it is to have a specific itemized estimate for the work that is required.

Response from Baker Brothers Plumbing, Air & Electric
Please read the response and provide me with any changes or corrections before I put it on line. Thanks: We appreciate that the member is among our loyal customers and recognizes the quality of our work, however, we do regret she felt her experience on pricing and billing was negative. First, we do take our customer’s concerns very seriously, and the billing was reviewed by the Service Manager over her job at the time the work was being done. As a company, we are happy to apply credits and discounts since our mission is customer satisfaction with the intent of having a life-long relationship with each client. In this particular instance, another technician wrote up her estimate but did not end up actually doing the work, which at times can create some confusion with the pricing. Once the technician’s supervisor was aware of this, as the member stated, the $39.50 was credited, the Angie's List coupon was applied for $50, the $350 was deducted off the initial estimate since brickwork wasn't necessary, and the $150 ($90 for labor and $60 for equipment) was added. Our technicians work off book prices so no matter how long a job takes, those charges are effective. This can and does benefit the homeowner in the event our technician ends up taking longer on the repair because of something that might be unforeseen. In this particular case, although minimal, the labor and materials needed to perform this work exceeded the amount we billed the member by $61.84. Our customer was not penalized for the additional cost and charged the agreed-upon price only. We value having her as our client and hope she will continue to use us as her plumber of choice in the future should she require plumbing services.

Rep. was rather arrogant and presented an estimate which was double my previous identical service with another plumber. Rechecked with six other plumbers and confirmed the Baker Bros.averaged twice the amount. Paid the service call and asked the rep, to leave as the fee was way to high. Totally disappointed with them.

Response from Baker Brothers Plumbing, Air & Electric
We understand his complaint was the estimate(s) he received, however, Baker Brothers continues to review the national averages to be sure we are right in line with our prices. A 2002 study on service industry charges revealed that the cost of a service call averaged $365 per call back at that time. Thousands of consumers here in the Metroplex see the advantage of using Baker Brothers Company. In today’s world, people in general are very safety conscious. At Baker Brothers, you are getting a plumber who has been drug-tested and background checked. The particular plumber we sent to the member's home had 30 years of experience in the plumbing industry. In addition, we have weekly training meetings designed for continuing education in new plumbing products and services, as well as, what we as a company, working together as a team, can do to take care of the customer. In addition, we match the manufacturer’s warranty – which can end up saving our customers hundreds of dollars in labor costs. A warranty is only as good as the company standing behind it. Baker Brothers is a third-generation owned company that has been in business since 1945 – our customers know (1) how to contact us, and (2) that we will be there when they need us. As a reputable plumbing contractor who operates under the guidelines of the International Code Council and within individual city requirements, we have made a considerable investment to provide excellent service to the public. This adds value to our service which cannot be measured in dollars. While it might be easy to quote a price for service over the phone, until the technician actually sees the repair environment, real cost cannot generally be determined. There is no service call fee when the customer goes forward with the job while we are there. If the work is scheduled for another day, the fee is credited to the job. We respect the member's right to be dissatisfied with the estimate, however, he did not use our services and therefore would not be in a position to evaluate the quality of our work simply based on being unhappy with the quote.

The service representative showed up several hours early to replace my toilet (much appreciated :-)). He put on protective covering for his shoes before entering the house to look at the job. After he had surveyed the situation, he gave me variety of options to choose from and we went from there. Unfortunately, he did not have the replacement toilet with him and had to go to the supply house to get it. Even with that trip, he was finished, cleaned-up, and out before the time I had originally been told he would be here. Again, given the nature of the repair...MUCH APPRECIATED! He answered all of my questions and explained everything to me (I figured for $700, I might as well get an education too).
Description of Work: The original toilet from when the house was built in 1992 needed to be replaced. Not only was it constantly leaking water but the flange was also broken. The toilet & flange were both replaced.

The main service rep /plumber was very pushy to the point of being unprofessional. He was flirting and trying sell me extras, that perhaps I did need but couldn't tell if he was just trying to sell me something or actually needed it. I did purchase just about everything he suggested, but I did feel uncomfortable. His manner just didn't sit right with me after all was said and done. He also was trying to have me organize the city to come and pass inspection on his work, when this is something he needed to do. He did a small amount of the work, but the assistant plumber did the bulk of the work. They did do a good job, but I felt for the legnth of time and the amount of money I spent, the constant harrassment wasn't worth the trouble. I did need an emergency plumber, but felt the guy was just too pushy.

He arrived on time. Then showed me pictures of his wife and family. I explained the job. I also said I needed him to do the shower first as the tile men were waiting on him so they could complete the tile in the shower. He began and said all would have to have new stops. He said he would call his boss for a quote. I said it wouldn't matter the shower had to be done. He began to work not on the shower but on the sinks. They called asking where he was. He did the shower last. He talked and talked. He did fix the shower. They left to go to lunch. He then said he needed to have lunch. He game LATE back to the house. I told him that he needed to leave. That he had been slow. I caught him talking on the phone outside in the yard. It appeared a personal phone call. He asked if he could please finish the work. Do the sinks and the tub. I said no. The bill was over $1000. I called my husband and he said that he was going to talk to his boss. I told him that my husband was going to call his boss. He said he better not. That my husband should call him and talk to him. Very threatening. I called his Bakers and they reduced the bill by half. He apologized for the man's behavior. It was unprofessional and frightening experience. I do not know why you have them on your list. This was a dangerous man.
Description of Work: We were moving. The job was to remove two lavatory fixtures, tub, and shower fixtures from the house we bought and put them in the house we were living in to update to sell it. He also was to put the valve in the shower that was being tiled. When he removed the fixtures he put new stops in them. I also explained the tile guy was waiting on him to do the work on the house we were going to sell. To please do that first.

Response from Baker Brothers Plumbing, Air & Electric
Baker Brothers takes any customer complaints very seriously, and since we were informed by the homeowner they were satisfied with the resolution we provided at the time they raised their concern, we were surprised to see this report over five months after performing the work at their home on August 19, 2009. When the member called our office initially with her complaint, she spoke with the Service Manager, who in turn, discussed her concerns with the technician immediately. In addition to reviewing the matter with the technician, we made a significant billing adjustment. At that time the customer stated they considered the entire matter settled to their satisfaction. Although we conduct weekly training programs that cover protocol and customer interaction, we cannot take individual perception out of the equation. A vast number of our satisfied customers request a particular technician because of the personal attention and care they experience with them. The plumber in question has been with our company for several years, and has, in fact, a loyal customer base that asks for him expressly. In this instance, it is possible that his outgoing personality was inappropriate for this customer and we regret they felt they had a bad experience as a result. We realize homeowners are concerned about having a stranger come into their home, and we take the area of customer safety very seriously. That is why all applicants are drug tested and background checked before being hired, and intermittent drug testing continues throughout their employment with us. Be assured we did not take the homeowner's complaint lightly, and where needed, corrective measures were taken. Baker Brothers Plumbing will continue to focus on customer satisfaction as our company Mission.

The plumber called before he arrived and put shoe covers on to protect our floors. He took a look at the broken disposal and asked if we wanted it fixed or replaced. We asked that it be replaced (it was leaking very badly and old.) He showed us an assortment of disposals in a wide price range and we chose one for $429, which he installed and it works fine. He also fixed a couple of slow sinks, one of which we knew had a very corroded pipe (trap?) that needed to be replaced. The sinks work fine now. We got an estimate on a toilet replacement and plan to use this company for that soon. The plumber was very professional, didn't leave a big mess, and we highly recommend him.

After the gas company cut off gas due to a gas leak, Baker Brothers was prompt in dispatching a team in an effort to isolate and repair the leaks in the system in and under the house. That late evening task extended to the next day and determined primary leak(s) were in the line from meter to home. By noon they were excavating after agreeing on fees for the job and the following morning installed the new line and connections to the house. Then waited first on City of Dallas Inspector to issue green tag and then 6 hours for Atmos Energy to reconnect meter. Two helpers arrived several days later when it warmed up to backfill the trench. All work done professionally, neatly, promptly. All workers (6 different helpers and plumbers) appeared to me to be focused on their work; diligent and explained what they needed to do and what they did. Cleaned up the site; protected the interior with drop cloths. They did well!
Description of Work: Four days of work in detecting leaks in gas line; replacing several cut-off valves; hand digging 68 feet of trench for new line; installing new line from meter to house and from house to connection to old line under the home and then backfilling the 19 inch deep trench and leaving yard in great shape.

They are not the cheapest around, but we like their service. They have a flat rate. They are one of the few companies in Dallas that sell Rani hot water heaters. We really liked Greg, the plumber who came out. He removed our old hot water heater, and moved all of our hot water lines to use the tankless hot water heater on the back of the house. He did a great job! We haven't had any problems with it. We have an older house, built in the 1920's, and he was able to repair all of that, and get everything working like it should.

When Pedro and his assistant arrived, the weather was nasty. They laid down canvas to walk on and proceeded to work. The leak was precisely where Pedro thought it was and they were able to complete the repair by mid-afternoon. They were pleasant, professional and punctual. I would use them again and definitely recommend them!
Description of Work: I discovered that I had a slab leak. After some checking around on Angie's List, I decided to go with Baker Brothers due to the longevity of the company and the quality of the comments here. I first had Pedro come by the house to find the source of the leak. He was very conscientious and pinpointed where he thought the leak was located. I contacted them the next day to set up a time for the repair. They came as promised and repaired the leak the same day.
