When Mike came out originally he seemed ok and I felt comfortable hiring him. He agreed that all the tile and grout would be done and all baseboards would be installed with the nail holes caulked. He came out a little late the first day and said he could only stay until about 3:30 because he had another job had to be at later in the day. He starded out by cutting baseboards, but he used my saw to do it because he didn't have one that could handle 5.5" baseboards. Once everything was precut he started on the tile and got all the tile laid before he left. The next morning he was late again and had to leave early again to make it to his other job. He was in a big hurry all day because he really didn't have time to do everything the way it should be done. He had someone else come in to help with nailing the baseboards to the walls, caulking, and grouting. I had told him the day before that I had tiled under the refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher so all those areas would need to be grouted. Toward the end of the day they had most of the baseboards done and were working on the grout. I came behind them pointing out areas that had holes or just hadn't been done very well. When I asked if he had grouted under the stove and dishwasher he said he had not. I pulled those out of place and grouted there, but I'm 99% sure he wouldn't have if I hadn't said anything. At a quick glance when they were "finished" everything looked ok, so I paid him and he left. After all, I didn't have anything to worry about since there's a 2 year warranty. When he left he had just finished with the grout, meaning that it needed to be gone over again with a sponge to clean up the residue and dust. He assured us that it would just sweep up, which of course it doesn't. I was left with a bucket and sponge doing part of the job he was paid to do. After he left and we had more time to look at the job he did, we were appalled. We found debris in the grout because it hadn't been cleaned first. there was a 1.5" long hole in the grout in the laundry room, and there were holes in several places in the kitche. For some reason he had installed the baseboards before the grout, so there were gaps in all the holes where the grout would have filled in had he done it before the baseboards. He had also thrown a bucket of grout he was cleaning againt the brick in the front of our house (thinking it was clean) and leaving a big brown area that he still has yet to clean. The baseboards are the worst part. There are multiple areas where the boards are cut wrong (not even close) and they attempted to correct it with caulk. The nailholes were not caulked. He cut the transition pieces from the tile to the wood too short. In a spot by our dining room door where the tile meets the door frame, they filled a spot on the floor with caulk instead of grout. The quarter round is cut one way on the left side of our back door and a different way on the right side. There's a board by the stairs but at least 1/4" short from being flush the way it should be. There are lots of other examples, but overall it was a very, very poor job that looks like it was done by an amateur at best. He finished the work on Friday and I called him the next day and said we needed to talk about the work. He was fine with that and thought there was maybe one spot that needed to be fixed. I told him there was a lot more than that and that we'd walk through it together. We set up a time for him to come out on Sunday but he never showed and never answered or returned my calls. He did answer the next day and offered to come back to the house, but that didn't work for me so we set up a time for him to come out on Wednesday. He didn't show again but did call and said he had been at another job late, so we agreed he could come out on Thursday instead. On Thursday he got to our house before I got home (after work) and talked to my wife. I talked to him on the phone and he said they would need a full day to do all the work that needed to be corrected, so I told him that's fine, I'll call back with a time. He also offered to paint the baseboards after they were fixed. I called him the next day, which was October 30th, to give him a time, but he didn't answer. I left him a voicemail with the time but I never heard back. I called multiple times following that and left multiple messeges but never got a call back. I called again today (November 23rd) and he answered. His response now is that the things that are wrong aren't his fault. I really don't trust him to fix the work that was done wrong, but if he does come back to work on it I'll be watching it all very closely. I would rather get a partial refund and have someone fix the issues that knows what they're doing than have him do the work again. He also used my 100 ft extension cord for his air compressor when installing the baseboards and it is now nowhere to be found. This has been a horrible experience and I wouldn't recommend Mike for any job, especially since he seems content with substandard work.
Description of Work: We hired Mike to finish laying a small amount of tile in our laundry room and a small pantry, grout those areas along with our kitchen and breakfast nook, and install baseboards in our entry way, guest bathroom, living room, breakfast nook, kitchen, laundry room, and dining room.
