Project took a year to complete. They installed the countertops on the cabinets last November. Did a superb job. The island was to be a different look than the countertops. I was building the island to resemble a piece of furniture. turned oak legs, etc.. etc. The slabs were delivered for the island last november when they installed the countertops. We just had them back a few weeks back to install the slabs on the new island and cut out the cooktop. They had only 3 cuts to make on the island. 2 pieces to it.. different elevations. The cooktop slab needed a notch cut into it to fit the higher section of the island, and of course the actual cook top opening. The installer had a full size plywood template to use, since we had been using a wooden island template with the cooktop in it for this whole past year. He made 3 mistakes in just those 3 cuts. I spent a good deal of time showing him how important it was that he made the cooktop cut right.. as it had to line up with the downdraft tube, and clear the cabinet and drawers on either side of it. He measured it appears from one side of the template and transposed it to his slab from the other side.. thus the cut was 5" off center. we didn't notice till he was done and we went to drop the cooktop in the slab. Didn't fit cause it now rested upon the cabinet space below and did not line up with the down draft. In fact i was so confused when he was there.. i assumed i had done something wrong in my building of the island. it was not till the installer left that i went out and measured the full size plywood template.. and saw his error. Upon calling the Granite shop and reluctantly telling him of the error. He said he'd speak with his installer. His installer says i told him to cut it 5" off center. I mean really. why would I have him slide it off center. Pretty lame excuse. whats worse is the Granite shop has not even offered to come see the install and the template to verify the story. they sent me a bill stating that it would cost me $750 to have them redo this 63" by 30" piece of black granite they cut wrong. Sorry, but no integrity in business there. its a shame cause aside from that they did nice work. A couple of other small mis-cuts... but I can forgive that.
