When we first met Eric Vogel, we found him affable and professional. Our experience, however, was anything but. He lacked professionalism, punctuality, respect, and quality in his work. Promises made before we signed the contract were broken: that he would be on site or have a site manager review the work daily; that his subcontractors were skilled and trustworthy; that he had experience installing our type of siding; that he could complete the project on time and within budget. The most serious problems included wasted material (we provided material, and more than 30% was wasted and/or removed from the job site to use in Vogel's other projects), poor workmanship (ungalvanized nails used on exterior siding, siding not installed to spec), failure to follow the plans (the ceiling was built 18" too short), and a failure to correct problems (we were charged an additional $500 to fix the ceiling/roof when it was the contractors' fault). It also took twice as long to complete the project (over 8 weeks when the contracted stated 4-5). I have worked with dozens of contractors and subs, and Vogel Construction is by far poorest quality and worst attitude that I have encountered.
Description of Work: We had many problems with Vogel Construction -- too many to describe here. In a nutshell, we hired him to do framing and cornice work on our house. He claimed that it would be completed in 3-4 weeks, but it took over eight. The contractor and his subs also wasted thousands of dollars in materials (which we provided) and built with the quality of an inexperienced and incompetent builder. He blatantly disrespected us, had poor communication skills, and misrepresented the construction capabilities of his subcontractors. We are very happy that we only hired Vogel Construction to complete a portion of our house rather than have him act as a general contractor because many of the more serious problems would have been cosmetically covered by drywall or other finishes and would have only been noticeable after several years.

Response from Vogel Builders
The member has presented several items that need clarification. I will say that the premise of two points were correct. 1. The cornice subcontractors ran out of galvanized nails and started using regular nails in the siding. We replaced as many as we could find and then they took $1000 in lieu of a 1-year warranty for me to come back and replace the nails that showed signs of staining the cedar. 2. This siding has two sides of of the "wavy edge" versus the more standard style that has one straight edge to make cuts off and the other side is wavy for the look. This material is very difficult to cut and make a perfect seam with the next piece because they must be cut at the opposite angle without a straight edge to base the cut off. This resulted in a much higher waste factor. I did purchase material to finish the project and credited them money at the end for the pieces they said were still not cut properly. This is not an excuse, the situation just needed clarification. 3. She claims that I stole material from their job to use on other jobs because she had cameras posted all around the property. She only produced 2 pictures. One showed me carrying material up to the front so I could help unload roof decking from the truck that could not get down due to the rain. They could have been charged a trip charge, so I shuttled it to the house in my pickup. Also, her husband knew about this. The second instance was my framer leaving with about (10) 2x6's. Most of my projects include me supplying the material, so my assistant sent them over to pick up the material, not knowing they had supplied it. At first, I told them I did not know who it was, but then I asked my framer and he told me that he had. Then they showed me the pictures. I went to the lumber yard, bought (10) 2x6's to replace the material and had her mother witness me delivering it. She still feels as though I stole material. With all the cameras though, she would not show me any more pictures, just make accusations. Plus, she blames me for her generator and other material being stolen. I even spoke to the sheriff and he told me theft was high in the area. I asked them to keep an extra close eye on this place because the clietns were building it themselves and it would take a little longer than normal to complete. From the beginning, I told the member that I generally do not work on projects in which the client provides the material for this specific reason. I told him it would lead to problems due to theft issues and reiterated it to him. He assured me I would not be held accountable becasue he wanted to supply it. I finally gave in and agreed to do it. 4. The plans were followed, however there were (3) elevations/vieews that did not match. They wanted one look, but the Architect had three different drawings. The framers chose one that worked with the scaling on the plans and framed it that way. The charge was them covering what an Architect may pay for design errors since they did not pay for the plans. I paid for the rest. The foundation crews are never mentioned and they poured the slab wrong by about 9" on one side and 3-4" on the other side. After adjusting that issue, the rest was framed per the plan upstairs. However, the windows then did not line up. This was corrected at no charge to them because they said it was something they should have been called on. I agreed and reframed the master bathroom and closet at no charge. I also reframed the two dormers on the house for the same reason. I fixed the back roof pitch because the architects measurements did not work out properly. I realigned the balcony door to match the window because the drawings did not line them up. I also reframed three windows for them in which they knew they would have to pay for, but ended up not paying me because I did not give him a price before making the change. Mind you, the windows were being installed and I forgot to give him the price. I had attempted to charge him $275 to reframe the windows and did not charge him because I did not follow his instructions. Therefore, I did not charge them for mistakes that I caused. I actually paid to fix several of the problems created without charging them because I felt they should have been called on a couple of them. I am in agreement with that portion of it. 5. It did take longer than anticipated due to the siding. It took longer to install and we had to replace quite a bit of it, which we did. This part does fall on me. 6. After the frame was complete, I could tell that the member did not trust me or my contractors, which is why I expressed to her husband that I did not feel it was a good relationship and that it might be best if they found someone else to do the siding. However, I told him I did not want to leave him in a bad situation, so I would continue if he wanted me to. He said that we had done a good job to that point and wanted me to continue, so I did. 7. Finally, when you are constantly degraded and called a liar and a thief, your attitude tends to become negative. I never walked out on their project despite that and I completed what they asked me to complete. She speaks of my lack of communication, she never contacted me one time. I spoke with her husband often and communicated via email with him, not one time did she call me. Even on site, many times she would pull her husband aside so they could confer and he would tell me what she said because she would not talk directly to me. This was from the very beginning, it had nothing to do with the siding or issues that came up later. After the final contract was signed and I had given them over $1700 in credit, she has now filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau wanting additional compensation for the time delay. Although I thought I had addressed all their concerns prior to the final payment, in which they signed a completion of contract form, I offered to pay her the $50/day fee for the time I went over my estimated time. My goal is to make my clients happy. I understand that she will not be happy with me or my company, but I am trying to make right some obvious errors on my part. Problems occur, but I have tried to make them right in a fair manner. I do not wish to say negative things about the members, I just felt the accusations she made needed to be clarified to some degree. I wish them the best on the rest of the construction of their home.

I was happy with all of the work and they did a good job. The gentleman that did the cabinets had the wrong end caps and they had him come back out and change them. They were an excellent contractor and I had no trouble with them at all. They were reasonably priced. They followed up and if I had any issues with the subcontractors, they would contact them and make sure I was satisfied. I would recommend them to others and they exceeded my expectations.
Description of Work: They were a general contractor that did several things for me. I had a window torn out and they brought in a mason to close in the wall. They brought in a custom cabinet maker to make the cabinets and he custom stained them. They brought in a painter to paint my textured walls and he matched up the existing paint. They also finished my garage which was unfinished. They put up sheet rock in the whole garage, painted the walls and they enclosed the ceiling.
