He was on time, very professional, did his work very well and effeciently..reasonable cost...would def use again
Description of Work: I have very tall ceilings and he replaced 8 fire detection devices and reviewed my breaker box in preparation to list our home. Install smoke detectors
It went perfectly. Curtis really knows his business, came up with some great suggestions on how to do things in a smarter way that would be less costly to us and did a perfect job. He was easy to work with, and his work is of a very high standard. His rates are reasonable, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone and we will call him again.
Description of Work: Curtis completed a number of jobs for us. The main one was to mount our television above the fireplace. As part of this he installed power, HDTV and cat5 cabling behind the wall, re plastered the points of entry and exit for the cabling, re-texturized the wall and painted. He did a great job, and was very particular to make sure everything was done perfectly. He also installed a couple of power points with USB charger points, sorted out a door that wasn't shutting properly and added insulation around the door of a loft entryway. He also did a couple of other small jobs for me.
This was the first time I have used a company from Angies list and it went great! I had 3 quotes and went with this company- he was the mid-range pricing between the three companies. I called, he was quick to return my call and set appt. for quote. When I was ready we agreed to do the work on a Saturday. He was on time at 8 am and had everything to do the job, unfortunately I did not. As the floor was being installed it was clear I did not get enough laminate flooring. I read my own measurements wrong when purchasing materials. He installed all that I had and agreed to return the next day, Sunday, to finish the job once I picked up everything I still needed. It saved me money to get the materials myself. Again, he was on time when he came back on Sunday. I was also pleased with how well they cleaned up at the end of each day. He installed a wood laminate floor, base boards, caulked and removed/replaced a ceiling fan. He was very thorough and my new home office came out great! I had already painted the room and baseboards, prepped the floor and done as much as I could to save money before I hired anyone. I will be calling him again for my next room!
Description of Work: install laminate wood floor, remove/replace ceiling fan, install baseboards and caulk.

The subcontracted electrician was VERY slow and not punctual. I purchased a specific HDTV electrical box that I wanted in my bedroom. He argued about the whole process of installing the HDTV outlets. After I told him that he either installed what I purchased or I would hire someone else so he finally installed it. It took him two days to complete the projects. When the Best Buy Geek Squad came to install our new system, I had to call the electrician back over because he did the wiring wrong. FRUSTRATING EXPERIENCE.
Description of Work: I needed a couple of ceiling fans hung, and new mounts for my new TV's, including the new outlets. Also had a new dining room light hung.

All the jobs have gone very well. Although, we have one door that he sanded and painted that continues to rust, but we know now that it is because of our dog. She scratches on that particular area of the door. Curtis sanded and painted it twice for us before we realized that it was caused from the dog and would continue to be a problem. He said he could replace the door with an aluminum or install a kick plate and that should solve that problem.
Description of Work: We had a very good experience with Houston Handy Husband and would definitely use this company whenever possible. Initially, we had miscellaneous projects done (Installing garage shelves and hooks, repairing rusted exterior door, fixing drywall damage, etc.) by Curtis who is the owner. It was the typical handyman jobs we felt comfortable enough with hiring an unknown. We realized this was a handyman that has integrity and has a broad amount of knowledge coupled with his willingness to bring in others who specialize in a particular area if it isn't his specialty or he doesn't feel he can get the job done as efficiently. He doesn't charge extra for the people he brings in either. He just gets them to work at his hourly rate, which I love because it takes the time and hassle away from me of trying to find someone suitable for each job. Curtis noticed our fence was severely rusted while installing a drip system for our potted plants, and brought it to our attention. We were not even aware of how bad the rust had become and were so disappointed to see it because it was almost rusted completely through and obviously had become a safety issue. Our fence was only 6 years old and had been sanded and painted twice in that length of time by 2 different companies. The last time was just the year prior. Curtis explained that it would be better to be out the expense now to replace it with aluminum as opposed to continually try to sand and paint it and the piece he brought to our attention wouldn't be salvageable at that point anyway. After checking prices with different companies, we decided to give Curtis a chance to install the aluminum fence and we are SO glad we did. What a difference it is. It took him longer than a specialized fencing company, but he told us that up front. We decided it was better to have the job take a week longer, but work with someone that has shown himself to be honest and do quality work. We have had the fence almost a year and of course have no signs of rust. We are going to have him change out a child safety fence that is under a covered area next. We thought we could save money on that part and not replace it just yet since it is covered and protected from weather, but it too has totally rusted now. Such a disappointment to spend that kind of money on a product that is meant for safety and it doesn't last more than a couple years. At least we know this time we will get a product that will last for much longer. I would also say this, I wish we would have known Curtis when we purchased our home because he is great at catching things that were done incorrectly. We hired an inspector, but it is a one time event and they are quite pricey whereas, Curtis charges $55/hr, and offers various discounts.

I contacted Curtis through his website which offered an estimate if you sent a description of the work. I sent him my 'honey do' list. The reply I got was "Can you send address and phone # to set up an appointment?"...that was it. His explanation for the abbreviated response was that he thought he was responding to a client he was fairly familiar/casual with. It didn't occur to me until later that if that were true, he wouldn't have needed her address. Anyway, he estimated 4 hours at a rate of $55 / hour. When he came he had another guy with him. I showed them both all of the projects and thought it odd that Curtis didn't take any notes. Curtis left to get a couple of things from the hardware store and the other guy got started on mounting the TV. They had estimated 4 hours, but only allotted 3 hours. So, they left to head to another job without completing the work, but scheduled another visit to complete the tasks. All they finished on this visit was to repair the hole in the wall, mount the flat screen TV and change out some electrical outlets for RFIs (which I had purchased a while back and never used). The second visit Curtis came with the same guy. The first job they tackled was repairing the gates. However, Curtis just kept chatting with me while watching the other guy. Eventually, I went inside and they worked together to fix the gates...later Curtis left the other guy outside to finish the gates while he worked on some of the stuff inside. Again, they they had another job schedule after mine and left without finishing. He was also out of receipts and said he would email me a receipt, which he still hasn't done. I've also requested a couple of estimates. Two of the jobs he has yet to provide estimates for. He did provide an estimate for replacing the bad wood on the exterior of the house and paint. However, he has only provided a quote for the entire job. He still has not provided the detailed quote I requested. It's been 3 weeks since the last visit. The work he did complete was high quality. However, I won't use him again as he seems to drag out the work, and I just don't have the time to deal with it.

Response from Houston Handy Husband
I'm sorry that this customer had a bad experience with my company,I will try to work on improving on it .Im the owner of a growing business and I try to make the customer happy while training new workers, it's a bit of a juggling act at times, but I always try to improve myself and the business . There's times when more parts are needed to complete a job then originally expected or jobs are added to the original bid and adjustments must be made. I understand that not everyone has been in the construction trade for 20yrs. And can have the same understanding of all the logistics that involved in what may seem to a simple job. In the future will go the extra mile and explain what's happening in detail . As the owner of Houston Handy Husband I don't do every job myself ,but I make sure that the customer gets the highest quality of workmanship .

HHH has an email address where you can send inquiries. Wednesday morning (10:40) I sent an email with a description of the work along with photos of the damage to the provided address. I received a response on Friday night (8:28 pm) via email confirming that they could do the work and a price. I did not use HHH because I already had someone booked for the repair by the time they responded. My rating is based on the length of time it took them to respond to me. If I contacted them initially on Wednesday morning, I expected a response sooner than Friday night. They did have my cell phone number as well as an email address. Also, their price was higher than what I actually paid to have the repairs done although was still in the range of what I would consider fair. Overall though, I will keep them in mind for future work.
Description of Work: I had a drywall repair on a ceiling that was damaged by an AC leak. The ceiling is approximately 18' high. In addition I needed a drywall repair near a shower door that was water damaged.
It went well overall, they are a new business in the area, but they had very good prices and you can tell they know what they are doing. It was nice to work with someone that was clear and they make scheduling appointments easy to do and their pricing was better than what we had researched.
Description of Work: We had Houston Handy Husband perform a variety of services for us and we were very pleased with all of them. We had them pressure wash our driveway (what a difference), put in wood flooring, repair some walls and a number of other around the house items we just dont' have time to do. They told us up front while they perform a number of different services, they really focus in on the ones they do well, and for the work they did, we were very happy.

Overall it went very well, Curtis (the owner), has a fine attention to detail and made sure that everything was done to our satisfaction. We love the look of the aluminum fence and it matches what we had before. What we really liked is that instead of replacing everything, they only replaced what needed to be replaced and gave us the pro's and con's of everything we were considering. We saved a lot of money and couldn't be more pleased with the way the fence came out. I wasn't aware of aluminum fencing before, but after doing some research, it really works out well and I am looking forward to not having to replace my fence again after only a few short years.
Description of Work: We needed our fence replaced because it was rusting out in several places, even though it was only five years old. We have a steel fence, and even though we have had it repainted it would still rust. We had Houston Handy Husband replace our existing fence with an aluminum fence, which looks exactly the same, but it will never rust. The installation turned out great and we saved several thousand dollars compared to other quotes we received. They also replaced some gates with child locks on them and they also work great. They were a pleasure to work with and would highly recommend.
