Day one - delivery of tiles at 7 am, as promised, work started promptly thereafter. The team worked worked very hard right through until approx 8pm when they broke for the day. Day 2, another 7am start and work replacing the roof was completed by 5pm that 2nd day. Our pool was well covered and care was taken with garden and plants. The yard was completely cleaned and restored to normal, no evidence of construction having taken place other than a very nice new roof! Steve and his team were very professional and courteous throughout. We are very pleased with the finished result.
Description of Work: Roof replacement- removed old tiles, installed radiant barrier and reshingled entire approx 6000sq ft roof.

They were prompt to set a date for original estimate. They scheduled a work date quickly and showed up on time. They did not go over the estimated time or budget. They kept a clean and safe worksite and totally cleaned after.
Description of Work: Replaced roof of house and stand-alone garage. Cleaned gutters and made repairs to gutter attachments. They made repairs to chimney and all roof stacks associated with furnace etc.

3/14/14 update: Mr F's response to my 3/8/14 review is chock full of misrepresentations. First, I let the Colony crew continue their work despite the deceptive photo stunt early on, because I did not have the heart to make them redo half a day's siding, nor to get into a hassle over the contract with the siding work half done. Instead I decided to supervise closely thereafter, and did so. That may have been over-tolerant or questionable judgment on my part, but it doesn't mitigate the dishonest photo or the owner's unprofessional conduct. The worst instances of such conduct came later--over caulking in the rain, and at the end of the job. Notice that his reply denies that his crew were caulking in the rain. I saw it with my own eyes as it went on, and spoke with both the crew chief (in person) and Mr Furber (by phone). The crew chief (Javier) said it was not a problem, and continued doing it. Mr. Furber also insisted was "not a problem"! For him to deny this now is outright prevarication. As for our confrontation on 3/6: Before I wrote the check to pay for the siding, I asked him "when he was planning to do the roof." I didn't really want them to do it, but also did not want to be the one to break the contract. He did so instead, and I was relieved. And I did not "threaten" to write a "scathing review" (I neither wanted nor expected any concession from him); I informed him flatly that I would write (an honest) one, and that he wouldn't like it. His exact, disdainful response at the time: "I don't CARE what you say in your review, because it's BOGUS!" No, the review is honest. His reply is bogus. I chose Colony Roofing based on their good reviews on Angie's 's List and because the owner (Steve Furber) seemed like a regular guy who would do things right, and respect my repeated wish to protect my house from rain during the work I hired them to do (residing and re-roofing). Things didn't work out exactly as i had hoped. It soon became clear that Mr. Furber placed absolute credence and confidence in his crew, and zero credence in his customer. I'll give two main examples. On the first day of re-siding, without my permission his crew reconfigured the trim-work on the SE corner of my townhouse, removing a vertical 1" by 2" trim board that had been set with 2" side perpendicular to the siding and parallel to the brick along the SE corner of my house--*exactly like every other vertical brick/siding seam on my house*--and replaced it with a 1"x4" trim board installed with the 4"side parallel to the newly installed siding. When I later noticed and questioned the change, the crew chief showed me an I-phone photo purporting to show that the new format with 1"x4" trim had been that way all along. To me the photo was obviously a sham: the 1"x4" trim board in the photo still had nails protruding from it, and must have been taken from the opposite corner of the wall, which did have 4" trim, being a corner where siding met siding, not brick. I hate to accuse anyone of deception and do not do so lightly, but am in no doubt whatsoever about what was there before they started. I had recently inspected and discussed the SE corner in detail with a carpenter who was estimating a new arbor to replace the old one that had been attached to the house and notched out around the same (1"x2") trimboard at that corner. I have checked that recollection against genuine photos, taken years ago, documenting how that trim-work had been for the last 32 years. (I am the first and sole occupant.) When I tried to explain to the crew chief and to the owner that I was *certain* and not merely assuming how the trim was before they started, they scoffed, claiming that the I-phone photo proved that I was mistaken. The crew chief actually argued for treating *all* the remaining brick/siding seams on the front (north) and west sides of the townhouse the same way they reconfigured the SE corner! Mr Furber was present at that discussion. The reason for the crew chief's wish to reconfigure the brick/siding seams on the N. side in particular, was that keeping the trimwork the way it was involved re-doing 30 sq. ft or so of Hardie siding that was already there (done 20 years ago by a different contractor) on the two narrow sides (each approx. 2' x 10') of an overhanging section on the N. side of my house, work not included in Colony's estimate. The owner should probably have foreseen that and included it in the original estimate. Doing it their proposed way would have made those narrow sides look silly, so I insisted that it be done the right (original) way. This prompted them to assess a $230 upcharge. I consented to the upcharge, as it seemed a small price to pay to preserve the appearance of those two sides of my townhouse, the ones most visible from the sidewalk and street. So I saved the original config. and appearance on those two sides. Colony's crew got their way on the E (patio) side, redoing the trimwork there to suit their own convenience. After that, I checked their work more often, and raised questions as necessary. My impression was that the crew chief, while not pleased with my increased level of scrutiny, and complaining about it daily to the owner, mostly accommodated me in person during the remaining days of work. Mr Furber, on the other hand, was more patronizing about my increased input, commenting more than once that I was "over-scrutinizing." My reply is that I scrutinized the job because he didn't. Fairness requires me to acknowledge that the finished re-siding work looks good. But I was never thanked, only belittled and patronized for my efforts to see the work done properly. On Thursday March 6, I called Mr Furber after 5 days of not hearing from him about the next phase of work. He came over and we settled up for the re-siding. That's when he said he did not want to do the roof, and accused me of "micro-managing the [re-siding] job" and of "costing his crew time and money," giving that as the reason he did not want his company to do my roof. I said, and say again: that's hogwash. While fairness requires me to acknowledge that the finished re-siding work looks good, I was never thanked, only belittled and patronized, for my efforts to see things done properly. I am positive that my scrutiny and cooperation saved time and improved the work outcome, by forestalling re-do's and giving timely feedback. I reminded him Thursday of the reason for my careful scrutiny: the crew's ad-libbed trimwork on the SE side. He scoffed. When pressed, he admitted that he did not see the original SE corner and wasn't there when his crew redid it. He only saw and believed the crew and the photo. He again referred to the cooked photo as incontestable proof, and brushed off evidence I tried to present, evidence which I honestly believe would convince **any disinterested person**. "Why would they do that?!" (fake the photo), he asked. I guess he has forgotten about the conversation ten days earlier, when we both heard his crew chief argue for reconfiguring the trim-work on the whole house to match the way they did it on the patio. The crew's reconfig. of the trimwork wasn't the only incident of what I consider unprofessional practice. On Day 4 of the job (Thurs. Feb 20th), a day when rain was widely predicted, instead of doing the responsible and accommodating thing--caulking the seams the crew had left uncaulked during the first three days of work--the crew spent the morning residing the chimney chase and some trimwork on the north side of townhouse. It started raining around 3pm that afternoon, as my housekeeper (who was there at the time) reported. It rained hard at several points, and the workers would take refuge in their trucks during the hardest rain, emerging to continue work when the rain slowed. When I came home from work at 5:30, it was raining lightly, but the siding crew was up on ladders, bravely tearing off old trimboards on the front (N.) side, installing new siding and caulking seams, all in the rain. When I questioned the crew leader about doing that work in the rain, he said it wasn't a problem. Mr Furber responded the same way when I called him that evening to question doing re-siding and caulking in the rain. True to form, he suggested it was "fine" if his crew did it, because they were the experts, and who was I to question it? I pointed out (also in an email) that caulking in the rain is simply bad practice, not good for adhesion, and it doesn't take an expert to know that. I intervened only to protect my property, evidently not his top priority. "If they don't work, they don't get paid," he explained. On March 6, when we settled up, Mr Furber got so vehement and offensive about my alleged "micro-managing" that I asked him to leave my house, paying him what I owed for the re-siding. Though he left me in the dark for five days about his intent not to do my roof as agreed, leaving my house with unrepaired sheetrock damage around one inside window, with ladder-damaged shingles around the outer edges of the house (perhaps par for the course on roofwork), and without gutters, I am in truth glad to be rid of him, and relieved that no crew of his will be working again on my roof or leaving my house exposed to the rain. I realize this report is is not typical of this company's reviews on this site. I'm probably more demanding than most. But I didn't start out that way on this job, and given what happened, I make no apology for scrutinizing the work of his crew. Though in the sales phase, the customer reviews and the owner's easygoing personality did "sell me on their expertise", the owner's conduct and attitude were *not* consistently professional. He reacted with condescension instead of respect or sympathy when I pointed out the above-detailed lapses. On this job, he placed his crew's convenience and presumed expertise over the customer's property and dignity. Hence the "F" for "professionalism" in this review.
Description of Work: Of the two-part job (1) residing and painting, and (2) roofing and gutters, Colony Roofing only did the first part. The owner told me he didn't want to do the second part, and they didn't.

I want to first be clear about this important fact: [member name removed] fully intended to continue to use my services but gave me an “F” for my professionalism. He has accused me and my crew of placing “zero credence in the customer”, using fake photos and other deceptions, scoffing at him, ad-libbing work, doing things to suit ourselves and so on. My question is why would anyone allow such a contractor to continue to work for them? No money had exchanged hands. I would have told any contractor that behaved with that much disrespect toward me and my property that his services were no longer needed. The truth is, that was not the case. The fact is, [member name removed] was ready for me to continue to work for him, but when I told him that I would not, he threatened to send a scathing report to Angie’s List and told me to leave his house. I also fully expect [member name removed] to respond to this but I have nothing further to say on the matter. I will not go back and forth with him defending the excellent reputation that I have spent many years establishing. I have not been in this business for twenty-five years (and, before that, ten years as a construction manager) by behaving in the way that he describes. I have an A+ listing with the Better Business Bureau and have been awarded the Angie’s List Super Service Award for three consecutive years. In addition to this, a successful company relies on excellent referrals. Without them, a company cannot survive. My past customers refer me on a regular basis. In [member name removed] own words, we did a good job. It is too bad that so much time was wasted because he did not trust us to do the job right. He could have been another 100% satisfied customer without all the stress. Having said that, I want to address a few items: [member name removed] accused us of using a “sham” or a “cooked up” photo in an attempt to deceive him. What possible motivation would we have to do this? Why make work for our crew and create a situation where an Angie’s List subscriber would give us a bad report? This defies all reason. Yes, [member name removed] did have a photo but it was taken from a distance that I would estimate to be from the street. You cannot discern anything in the photo because it is too far away, and it is at an angle in which it was impossible to prove his allegation. Had I seen proof of deception, I would have apologized, made my crew redo the work, and probably fired them when they were finished. We had previously discussed the trim treatment on the northeast and northwest corners. The treatment suggested by my foreman, but described as “silly” by [member name removed], can be seen on homes all over the area. We were emphatically told by [member name removed] that everything must be installed exactly as it existed on the house. Note that doing it [member name removed] way required more labor and materials and, yes, I did expect additional payment. It was not an “upcharge” as he described it, but a charge for a specific way of doing the work that was not in the contract. A day or two later my crew chief pointed out that the southeast corner was done with the method we had previously pointed out to the customer. We had worked for [member name removed] for a couple of days and, based on our experience, felt we needed to document this. My foreman did so by taking a picture. The crew then duplicated exactly what was there. In hindsight I probably should have mentioned this to [member name removed], but he had been adamant about having everything done exactly as it was. I also want to note that duplicating it exactly the way it was did not compromise the integrity of the work or detract from its appearance. If it did, I never would have allowed it. There was a point where [member name removed] “questions” became insinuations that we did not know how to do our job. He even told me that my crew had “fooled me” into thinking they did good work. I have been in the construction industry for nearly thirty-five years. I know excellent work when I see it. Yes, I appealed to him on behalf of the crew. Like him, these are men trying to make an honest living. My foreman had begun to complain that he was losing time and money because of the customer’s intrusion. The labor price is based on how many days it should take to complete the job. If they are delayed they start losing money. At one point the customer told the crew they could not start painting until he came home and checked the caulk. The crew lost twelve man-hours of work and there was nothing wrong with the caulk. The foreman and his crew are one of the best in the business. He has many years of experience and is in great demand. He knows the folly of trying to put caulk on when it is raining because rain inhibits its adhesion. He did apply caulk above the windows while it was not raining. This is standard, to prevent water from entering the house in the event of rain. [member name removed] told us that we were putting up cracked siding. The foreman explained to him that those were not cracks, but were pencil marks from measuring the siding. He still expressed doubt and we invited him to go up on the ladder to see for himself but he declined. After the job was finished, I went to [member name removed] house to speak to him personally. It is important to note that his house did not have any roof leaks so there was no danger of damage to his home. I told him at that time we would not be doing his roof. This was when he threatened to write a scathing report on Angie’s List. Gutter installation was part of the contact. Since the roof should be installed before the gutters, I refunded him the money for them. Regarding his complaint that there were nails popping out of his sheetrock, the contract clearly explains that this can happen during the process of installing siding and that our company cannot be held liable for it. As a goodwill measure, I also refunded money to have that fixed. 8) My aforementioned comments show that I was making sure that [member name removed] home was being protected, although his comments could lead you to think otherwise. As I said before, my reputation speaks for itself. There will be no further comments. Thank you.

We appreciate the positive comments given by the customer but since we received B ratings on so many items we felt the need to address them. While a B rating might be acceptable to some roofing companies we maintain a higher standard than most. We informed the customer we were very busy and would get to it as soon as we could, which we did. Continual raining was an issue in that we cannot repair the roof while it is raining or when the roof is wet. The customer, understandably, was concerned with the damage that water coming in might do. As I explained to customer, the problem lies in the fact that, when the roof was initially installed by another company, the decking was fastened with staples and there was not proper spacing between each sheet of decking. This causes buckling in the decking as it expands and contracts (with the change of humidity) which pushes the staples back up through the shingles, causing leaks. Each time we come out we find 25 or thirty new staples pushing up through the shingles, and as anyone can tell you, water can find its way through the tiniest of holes. We repair these areas, but new staples keep popping up and will continue to do so. Because the roof is very large it is a very tedious and difficult process to find every staple that is sticking up. As I explained to the customer, the only solution is to replace the roof. Thank you. – Steve Furber

This was the second time I have used Colony Roofing. The first time, after a few years we had a couple of leaks over a section of roof that gets the worst sun exposure, has a shallow pitch and heavy water that gets diverted onto that section of roof, adding to the amount of water that it would normally receive. In spite of that they ended up replacing that section of roof and added a water shield that cured the problem completely. And because if "failed" he did not charge for it. Needless to say, I was extremely happy and more than willing to use his company again. Once again they did an excellent job and left the property completely clean when they left. I deliberately waited a couple of months, and in spite of the welcome rain we've had this fall the roof performed flawlessly. Steve responds quickly to all phone call and offers great customer service as well. That sets his company apart from most contractors I have dealt with.

Thanks once again for your business. As you know it is my policy to "make it right" if there is a problem. Because of the slope and the excess water on the shingles, it was apparent that additional protection was needed. Unfortunately, as hard as we may try, not every job goes perfectly. Sometimes we have warranty issues. But, my customers can be sure that we will always do what is necessary to repair the problem. Thanks again for your repeat business and your kind words. Steve

My house has a very difficult roof for roofers. Very steep pitch and lots of difficult angles. Colony Roofing realized that they would be short on shingles after the first day of work yet owner Steve Furber did not request that any extra amount be added to his original bid although it cost him money in both additional materials and labor. This is a man of integrity which is what I was looking for when I found decided to go with Colony which is highly recommended on Angie's list. The crew was conscientious and protected my windows and flower beds with plywood and tarps. The job was interrupted by 2 days of rain but they had weathered in the areas they had stripped before they left each day. They stayed after dark to ensure the roof was rainproof. They worked both Saturday and Sunday to make up for the rain delay. They were considerate and did not arrive before 9:00am on Sunday out of respect for our neighbors. The crew also did a great job of cleaning up the yard, flower beds and driveway of shingles scraps and nails.

We were very pleased with the service we received. I called Steve first thing on a Saturday morning and he and his crew were over at my house by 9:30 a.m., even though Steve was planning to head out of town for the day. Steve and his crew were professional and quick, and I had confidence that they knew what they were doing. While he was there, I asked him to evaluate our roof, which he said looked good and did not need to be replaced any time soon. That also gave me confidence that Steve does not try to sell you something you don't need. I will definitely call Colony Roofing in the future should I be in need of any of the services he provides. I highly recommend them.

Excellent job. Truly my best Angie's List experience. Hired Steve and his team in 2012 to replace the roof on my two story home with detached garage. Very pleased with the work so i contacted him again this year to replace siding. As expected, another positive experience. I have several pets and the crew made sure the backyard was tidy and usable every evening before they left. I look forward to using Colony Roofing next year for new windows!

I found this company on Angie's List and used a Big Deal coupon for this service; it was great. They did an excellent job and gave me a great price. The main person gave me a free estimate and showed me exactly what they were going to do. The crew showed up on time and worked non-stop for a week-and-a-half to finish the job. They cleaned up everything and were very polite. It was a really good experience. I got a much higher bid from another company and I did not have to pay until everything was finished.

The paint job went smoothly and looks excellent. The painters did a excellent prep job. The deck job also turned out great, however, as to be expected, there were unforseen complications. Without getting into details, the original construction of the deck was deficient. As a result, additional work and close supervision was required. Steve Furber was outstanding in performing the additional supervision required. He was always available whenever there was a problem. I would definitly choose Colony Roofing again, especially if you want someone who is responsive.

Company owner, Steve Furber promptly returned my call after I contacted him and showed up at the agreed time to evaluate the job. His price was reasonable and he was able to schedule the job expeditiously. Even though this was a small job, Steve showed no hesitancy in taking it on and working it into his busy schedule. The work was completed in a professional manner and I will not hesitate to call upon Colony Roofing and Exteriors the future when the need arises.

Thank you for your input. We are glad to see that you are satisfied with the result of our work, and we appreciate your patience. For the sake of the Angie’s List members reading this review, I would like to explain a bit about the work that was done and the increase in cost. When our siding man was removing the old siding he discovered plywood damage (under the old siding) on the right side of the chimney. Basically, the plywood was in such bad condition that there was nothing on which to nail the new siding. Because of this, he had to reframe that part of the chimney. (Framing/replacing plywood was not in the contracted scope of work.) The additional amount I charged was strictly for material and labor. There was no additional profit for our company. This was a very rare occurrence in which unforeseen damage caused the cost to be somewhat higher. (member name removed) , I thank you for your patience and am glad to know that you were happy enough with our work to say that it “looks great”. It has been a pleasure working with you.
