The computer took 3 and 1/2 months to fix. We will never purchas anything from them again.
Description of Work: Computer would not boot up. The computer went to the blue screen and then would not start. It is 4 years old but we purchueced the 5 year extended warentee plan from Fry's. This was the second time we had it in the shop. The first was just after we purchased it. Never again will we purchase anything from fry's. The service department is full of incompetent people who just do not care. They tell you something but never follow up. You have to keep calling and stay on top of them or nothing gets done. This time we brougth the computer in on May 14, 2012 but as of today September 3, 2012 it is still not fixed. This is after bringing it back three times. They replaced the hard drive twice, the video card and motherboard. Now they are telling us the power supply does not support the video card they put in. I've read some other blogs that say the do not replace the parts with new parts just refurbished parts. We will never buy anything from them again.

My most recent visit to Fry's was late in the day on Saturday after Black Friday. They had some good sales in the Saturday ad. It was crowded but not packed. As I walked back to the component department, a Fry's salesman asked if I needed help. I hade a list of about 10 items from the ad that I wanted to look at. He knew where several of them were and walked with me to pick them out. He knew that they were out of stock of one of them. For the rest, he checked the stock on the computer (they had all the rest in stock.) and led me through the store to find most of them, getting help from the salespeople in the department as needed. Two of the items were in the audio department which I could easily find on my own. This salesman was remarkably knowledgeable about the computer-related items on my list. I was blown away with this level of service and knowledge and with the fact that they still had all but one of the items in stock including those that were free or almost free after rebate. This salesman was spectacular but most of the sales staff in recent years have very good. I just sent in the customer comment form to the Fry's home office. I think this is the longest Angie's List comment I have ever written, by far. Several of the comments on the list about Fry's were negative. I wanted to share my opposite experience. I think most of the problems were with repair services so maybe that explains the difference.
Description of Work: I have made purchases at Fry's for more than 10 years. Purchases have included flat screen TV, 2 computers, 3 printers, cell phone, and too many additional electronic devices, parts, software, and small home appliances. I have a weakness for the "free after rebate" offers that are in virtually ad in the Friday newspaper insert. I know it sounds absurd but I have probably sent in 200-300 separate mail-in rebates and I keep a copy in cast there is a problem. My success rate with rebates is better than 99%. On the rare occasion that I have an unresolved problem getting a rebate, I contact the rebate specialist at my Fry's store and they go to bat for me by contacting the vendor or manufacturer. This has always worked. I should point out that I am extremely careful to to follow the rebate directions exactly. I have returned probably 20-30 items over the last 10 years. The return department has always been very courteous and credited my account for the purchase. On 3-4 occasions I have gotten a credit for their price match guarantee when either Fry's or another store had a better price within 30 days (I think that is the limit.) of my purchase. My reasons for returning items have included changing my mind, product defective, product incompatible with my system. I have had essentially zero contact with the service department so I can't say much. A few years ago I bought a refurbished printer and an extended warranty. (I rarely get the extended warranty.) The printer stopped working after a few months so I took it in. The repair folks told me they would check out and repair the printer but if the problem (e.g., bad print cartridge) turned out not to be covered under the warranty I would be responsible for the $49 inspection fee. I thought that was outrageous since the printer only cost $40. I did not have it repaired. Obviously, I have been very happy with Fry's.

THEY WERE ABLE TO RECOVER ALL MY DATA. THEY ALSO DID IT IN A MINIMAL AMOUNT OF SERVICE TIME. I WAS VERY PLEASED.
