The company owner (Joe) was very polite and friendly - as a matter of fact, he was overly friendly. He provided a professional estimate on company letter head. The estimate was even broken-out into the various work activities and was emailed to me for review. The work started on time as scheduled early with Joe (the company owner) working side-by-side with a skilled sheetrock craftsman. The first work day went well with 1/2 payment made at the end of the day. It wasn't until the 2nd work day that it became very obvious that they were very rushed. By 2pm, Joe came to me and advised me that he was done. When I started to walk the job down to inspect the work, I quickly started to say certainly he did an excellent job as he wanted to use me as a reference. I said no problem let me finish walking the job down. Needless to say, there were multiple quality issues that I pointed out at which time he began to ramble about something. His solution was to cake on more quick drying mud, sand it and then do a quick texturing job. Believe it or not, this quality walkdown and mud caking cycle went on 4 times over the next 3 hrs until I was worn down. It became obvious to me that my expectation of quality and his was way off - in effect, he was not able to or not willing to do the quality needed for the job. Warning signs: 1.) Contractor did NOT have his name or business address on his card. When I asked about that he said that several of his employees have cards and hand them out. 2.) Contractor was OVERLY FRIENDLY. 3.) Contractor's estimate was several hundred dollars below other estimates. 4.) Relied too heavily on reference whom I only knew indirectly. 5.) Contractor made promises to tape electrical plugs prior to the job and didn't. 6.) Contractor began to crawfish on which rooms were included in the original estimate after he started the job. 7.) Contractor began sharing with me sad stories how his line of work his boom or bust and right now business has been slow.
