The repair guy called for the courtesy call and I asked if he had another person coming to help him. He became flustered and said he was not aware of needing another person and had to call his manager. He called me back and said he was so sorry that they did not get the message and he did not have anyone. I explained that, regardless, I needed my dryer fixed because I was going out of town and had guests coming on Sunday and that he and I would have to pull the dryer down. He did not like this option (neither did I but I needed my dryer fixed!) and that he would call his manager and get someone. I said ok and asked if this was ok as I needed to leave work to meet him and did not want to leave and find out later that he was not coming. He said no, it was ok and that he would be there in an hour (5:30p). I got home by 5:20, waited until 5:45p and tried to call the repair guy who I had spoken to earlier but no answer. I called the main Village Plumbing number and spoke to a woman and asked about the repair. She tracked down the driver and said he or someone else would call me shortly. I waited until 6:30p - no call and no response. By that time, Village Plumbing was closed and the repair guy was not answering his phone. A little after 6:30p, the repair guy called me back and said two guys were on their way to pull the dryer down. I told him that I did not want them to come, that I had made other plans since they did not respond and that I was not going to use Village Plumbing. It is so unfortunate because I have heard great things about Village Plumbing and they were so reliable for my grandparents when they were alive. My first attempt to use them was so far from what I expected - really inconsiderate and very poor demonstration of service. Everyone was nice on the phone but that did not get my dryer fixed, nor did it meet the commitments they made to me. Unfortunate that their credibility was shot in one experience.
Description of Work: Nothing!!! Provider was supposed to come to do a dryer repair on 6/14. When I made the appointment, I explained that it was a stacked washer/dryer with the dryer on top so they would need two people. The woman who scheduled, who was very polite and efficient, said ok.

Prompt, professional, polite and punctual. The dispatchers were great coordinators and kept me informed. Our licensed plumber, David, showed up 10 minutes early for our 9am appointment, and he finished our water heater installation by 11am, as promised. He took the time to explain the system, answered questions, and was overall very helpful and courteous.

Technician was prompt and courteous. He evaluated the heater and stated that he would need to order the parts and return to replace the regulators. The cost would be $950 to replace both. However, while the technician was in the attic he noticed other "problems". He suggested I repipe both heaters so the heaters would be centered in the catch pans. A job that would cost thousands of dollars. My house is a new construction that is less than 4 years old and clearly passed inspections from both the city and an independent contractor. This was completely unnecessary. He also wanted to replace a valve that looked "cheap." I immediately contacted another plumber approved by the heater manufacturer who did not charge me for an evaluation as this was a known problem with these heaters. They came out and did the job in less than 2 hours for $300. I agree with the other reviewers. Inflated prices and looking to add additional projects that are not necessary.

Last fall, I hired them to replace old ductwork in one of my houses that is occupied by renters. In the spring, the renters called them because a furnace blower was out.. when they gave an estimate for the blower motor and, alternatively, a new system, they advised the renters that the ductwork was a mess and needed to be replaced - there was old ductwork mixed with new, and most of the new ductwork was just laying on the attic floor instead of being hung. They even showed a picture of how it should be properly done. The next day when I talked to them, I reminded them that the problem ductwork was theirs - they had just been paid to replace it! They checked their records and responded that: a) for some reason their work order only included replacement of 5 of the 7 ducts; b) out of the 5, their tech only had replaced 3; and c) out of the 3 actually replaced, only one had been hung properly, the other two were laid on the floor of the attic, which violates code. They offered to hang the 2 improperly laid runs and to replace the 2 runs that they had failed to replace at all. They also quoted replacement of the furnace and air-conditioning system with a Lennox system but, when asked which Lennox model number they were stumped and said they would have to work on figuring that out! I subsequently had 2 other contractors bid on the replacement systems and was very surprised to learn that even the 3 ducts that Village replaced had not been the type required by Code (R8) but instead were R4, which had been long since been superseded in Code requirements. Village had also removed the tags on the ductwork that would have shown the insulation rating in case an inspector checked their job. When confronted with this information Village blamed it on a tech who no longer worked there and offered to replace all of the ductwork with R8 "if they got the replacement job." I can see blaming poor installation on a rogue employee (but that admits that there is no follow-up to ensure quality work), but you can't blame a tech for loading product on the van that Code does not allow. When I threatened suit, they refunded the money I paid for the ductwork... I wound up having the systems and ductwork replaced by Air Specialists, who I highly recommend. In sum, the only things that sets Village apart from the shady guy on Craigslist are slick television ads, fancy vans and high prices. Village

Response from Village Plumbing & Air
Dear [Member Name Removed] I was truly disappointed to read your review. Although you have lost faith in my company, I am glad our second technician pointed out the faulty work our first technician had performed in your home. I would have liked to replace the duct work and perform the job properly, however, I respect that you allowed Air Specialists to perform the work. I know the owner of Air Specialists well and they are a quality company. We refunded your money for the work because it was the right thing to do. You are correct that quality checks on job sites are vital to verify the proper installation of systems and it is obvious that no one checked your job at the end of the service. I sincerely apologize for your experience. My parents started Village in 1946 and I take great pride in doing work the right way the first time. It is my family's reputation on the line. If there is anything I can do to repair our relationship, please email me at monica@villageplumbing.com or call me at 713-526-1491. Thank you for your feedback. It is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Monica Ryan

It went fine. Lighting my pilot was quick and easy. The hot water heater is 4 feet from my back door. A simple job. I was told that that the price to light pilot would be $175.00 I agreed to it because i needed to have hot water. My house and car had flooded. The water heater was one more problem to take care of. That is why i said ok to do the work.

service company. Our air conditioning failed. Village Plumbing had installed the air conditioning/heating system. Village Plumbing came immediately and diagnosed the problem, which arose because the unit wasn't properly serviced last time they came out for a part replacement. I had a discussion with a pleasant young technician who indicated that Village Plumbing was "cleaning house" because of some bad technicians in the field. He indicated that he personally would be taking care of our air conditioning system. We put new components in, under a new warranty. I just wanted to keep the unit running during the summer and I didn't have time to "shop" a new service company. After twenty-five years of using Village Plumbing, I am writing them off. I certainly would not recommend them to new customers.

Dear [member name removed] ~ I apologize for any service you have received that is below your standards. The Air Conditioning Service Manager, Billy Raley, will be contacting you tomorrow morning to discuss your job and correct anything that is not to your expectations. I am not familiar with any "house cleaning" as we have strict hiring standards that have been in place for some time to protect our clients. I am disappointed to hear that any employee would make such a comment and I am thankful you told me. I appreciate you listing your concerns so we may be have a chance to correct the situation for you and for all our customers. Thank you again for your review. Sincerely, Monica Ryan President

I called another plumbing company. They came promptly to my house, gave me an estimate, and a 10 percent discount for being an Angie's List member. I gave the job to them.
Description of Work: Got home and found a broken, leaking pipe. The pipe was located in the ceiling, and thus the ceiling collapsed while I was out of the house. It was around 1:10 am. I called Village Plumbing 24 hour emergency number. The person who took my call was not able to tell me how long they were going to take to come to my home or how much they would charge. She did say, though, that she was going to call the plumber immediately. The plumber never came. I never received a call back from them.

The plumber came out and said it really needed to be replaced but repaired as best he could for the time being. The estimate he gave me for the replacement was very high, $300, so I did not have him replace it at that time. He was very nice and informative. He did what I needed as I wanted to confirm if the old faucet I had was fixable or needed to be replaced, which he got it working again until my husband could replace it.

I used this company because my regular plumber couldn't come out today. I had a minor gas leak from an outside lantern that got water inside of it. I just needed the water cleared and the fire lit. Two men came out. The main guy, Will, said that it had soot buildup and needed to be "completely taken apart and cleaned out." I immediately knew this couldn't be true because it just went out 2 days ago when a pressure washer accidentally got water into the lantern. It wasn't soot buildup, but water. Before that it was working perfectly. I told him just to see if there was any water in the line and to relight it. He insisted that it was soot buildup and would only do the work for $250. I agreed to the price, thinking at least I will get my lantern completely cleaned out and lit. He literally took the brass tip out, walked to his truck, and came back 5 minutes later and said he was done. He had taken a rotary wire tool and scrubbed the top of the tiny 2" brass piece where the fire comes out. That was it, for $250. When I commented about it being a high charge for $250, he said, "If you buy a home warranty, I'll reduce the price to $200". I said I wasn't interested. Then he said "What do you think would be a fair price?" I said that I thought absolutely no more than $150. He shrugged his shoulders, and said, "OK." He also damaged the brass tip when he "polished" it and now I need to get a new one. So, $150 charge and I'm in a worse position now than before. I will complain to management but after talking to neighbors I hear that this is typical of this company. There is no set price list--they charge what they think you will pay.

I had the same technician every time who seem very knowledgeable. After dealing with multiple AC issues in the past 6 months and using several difference services, I have found Village to be overpriced and very willing to push services/fixes that are very expensive and highly unnecessary. After paying $1,200 for the zone board, i found others could replace it for $700-800. I needed to replace my evaporator coil due to a leak. The technician mentioned it was 'about $3,000. When he confirmed that it needed to be replaced, he tells me it is normally $3,600 but they would do it for me for $3,000. I got another quote of $2,000 and told Village...they came back and said they could do it for $2,000. I suppose it is good that they would come down in price but the fact is they would have seriously screwed me with their first price. Maybe this is standard industry practice, but seems pretty exploitative to me. After having another company replace the coil, I had village come back to address another issue. Same technician told me that the new coil was either leaking already, hadn't been installed properly, or there wasn't a proper vacuum on the system when it was recharged. he wanted to charge $300 to add some coolant or $900 to recover all the coolant and fully recharge. I declined. Turned the coil outside was so caked in dirt it wasn't operating efficiently. I cleaned it myself. He didn't even bother to check it..just wanted me to pay for more coolant. All in all, I feel like they are out to get as much of the customer's money as possible. I will not use again.
Description of Work: I have use them 3 times: first to replace a zone board on a lennox 3 zone HVAC unit ($1,250), replace a 24v contactor, and another diagnostic trip but ended up not using them.

It could not have gone better!!!! They were awesome! Jose came out and fixed the dryer problem in just a few minutes. The painters that I had out recently had crimped the dryer vent tube. Balancing the washer was an easy fix. But, after he started looking at replacing the hoses, he came back out and said that he was concerned that he would create a leak because the valves coming out of the wall were so corroded. He recommended that a plumber come and replace the valves first. I agreed, so he called dispatch and asked that a plumber come out later in the same day. Jose then left. An hour or so later Jason, the plumber, showed up to replace the hot and cold water valves. He didn't have a part he needed, so he said that he would go back to the warehouse and get the part and would be back. While Jason was gone, Jose showed up again without being called. Jose started on the hose replacement while Jason was gone. When Jason returned, they completed the job together in short order. They tested everything before they left. Jason noted that my hot water heater was set too high and adjusted it back to what it should be, then explained to my why having it set so high wasn't good. Jose found an additional issue with the washer and obtained a quote to fix that issue. I opted to fix that issue later, and there was no pressure to do it now, which I appreciated. Both Jose and Jason were polite, conscientious, professional, and clearly knowledgeable.
Description of Work: I requested that they come out to investigate why the dryer wasn't drying properly recently and the washer was off balance. I also asked that while they were here to replace the hoses for the washer.

Again, the work performed was satisfactory, but I have been waiting for over TWO weeks for the technician to return and repair the leak under my sink that he said was apparent while he was doing some investigating. I have called Village Plumbing twice and nobody has returned my call. I have been a customer for some time and I really don't understand this sudden lack of professionalism.
Description of Work: Provider performed several jobs. The technician advised that he was not able to repair the leak under my sink as he did not have the parts. They would need to be ordered. I have not heard one word from Village Plumbing, and I have used them for many years. Village has gotten into the system of sending and quot;contractorsand quot; whose rates change according to our reaction to their quotes. Two and quot;Villageand quot; workmen recently have suggested virtual remodeling of the bathrooms WHICH HAVE BEEN REMODELED EXTENSIVELY AND EXPENSIVELY in the past four years. One man insisted the trouble withe the Kohler low-flow toilet was so serious we would need to replace the entire toilet!! He even called with a bid of $1700 for a new, identical toilet. I was so angry I got out of my wheelchair, got the tank top open and found that the repeated flushing was due to an over-flowing setting. I re-set it myself and the problem has ceased. Yesterday three different workmen from Village came to and quot;snakeand quot; out a clogged washing machine line. It has been a problem over the years, but Village's former master plumber managed to do this job each time by snaking the line from the washing machine (which is at the top of the house line,) then opening the large and quot;nippleand quot; valve in the side of the garage and snaking the rest of the line. I couldn't even interest Village's men to look at the main valve!!!! Instead, they want to tear out a hole in the sheet rock, as if this would gtive them some sort of better access. I'm through! I'm using another plumbing company, even hough we have done business with the Ryan family (owners of Village) for almost 50 years!!
Description of Work: The provider replaced the handles on the faucets of one of my Kohler Man's Lavatories. The handles were not the ornate and expensive type that I purchased from originally from Villege (who are Kohler suppliers). I am told they are no longer available. This is very disappointing.
