I've told my full story above. It's pretty short and sweet (uh', better make that short and bitter.)
"Please don't follow this members advice. Follow this members actions. When you have an electrical emergency, there may be an unsafe condition. Which, when you speak of electrical systems, could be a fire or shock hazard. Even if your did it yourself! This member called us on a Friday at 1:30 pm. we were at his home at 2:30 pm that same afternoon and spent almost 3 hours with this member, not 1 hour, even though we don't charge by the hour. We gave this member an up front price that he approved before we started. What did he do at that time? He approved the work, because he valued us and our ability to get to his home quickly on the same day and take care of his electrical problem before it became dangerous. Where were all the other electricians? Simple, they don't care enough to invest in the overhead to be available when you need us. RIGHT NOW. I would rather invest in the overhead to create great service and take care of our customers quickly before the situation is dangerous, than cut corners, provide inferior service and not be available when you need us. So please read on. the only complaint you will see is that when we took care of the customer quickly we were too much, but when the customer knew to hire us to create a permanent repair, we get straight A's and Page of Happiness nominations. Which by the way we have over a dozen Page of happiness nominations and one actual page of Happiness as well as over 90 A's out of 110 reviews."
They arrived on time and were friendly, including to our dogs!
They performed an electrical assessment on the house and gave one recommendation. They said their pricing is based on the job (based on national standards), not per hour and i felt it was very reasonable. They did both jobs in a timely fashion. We will use them again for any electrical needs.
"We worked for this member on New Years Eve 2010.She called when the power to her bedrooms was out. I read the invoice, we actually replaced 3 Arc Fault Circuit Interupter Breakers not 2 fuses. AFCI breakers have been updated about 7 times for problems since they were installed in her home. We also waived our normal $59 dispatch fee and charged her a total of $495. I am not sure what the technician was pushy about, because we did not recommend any additional work, since her house was built in 2005. Ye,s you can hire someone cheaper. And of course, that is all they are worth. All of our electricians are licensed home electrical experts, drug tested , background checked, and available at short notice when you need us most, RIGHT NOW. I would rather spend more on overhead to create a great service experience than cut corners and provide inferior service. This member also has a 3 year warranty on her breakers as well as a satisfaction gurantee, while most electricians' warranties are either 30 days or after their cell phone is turned off because they can't pay the bill. An electricans license does not require any knowledge of business, or much math for that matter. I recommend getting 3 bids and then throw away the cheapest. Do you want to help someone "practise" on your home while they figure out howe to be a contractor?"
I called all over town trying to get a few data jacks installed, and even though you see these services advertised on the side of the road (and on Angie's List) - go ahead - call them. They'll tell you the job is too small, or they don't do residential, or you get some guys voice mail and maybe you'll get a call back, then they'll tell you the job is too small.
Not so at Universal Wiring. I made the call, said I wanted a few data jacks installed, and Richard (called first) showed up the next day and performed the site survey. While here Richard saw all my computer equipment (most people have zillion dollar 60" plasma and LCD TV's - but I just have computer gear) and asked what sort of surge protection I used besides the obvious plug-in-the-wall power strips.
I proudly stated my was built with a whole house surge protector which had already saved me once and was replaced by another electrician who was here installing a ceiling fan a few years ago with the most expensive unit I could buy at Home Depot. Richard inspected the unit and politely explained while the unit was a good one and still working, with the amount of computer gear I had in the house I might consider stepping up to a light grade, lower end commercial unit.
As everyone knows, losing a computer is nothing - it's expected. What's horrible is rebuilding the unit with the data etc. because it takes so much time. This decision was a no-brainer for me so I asked Richard to put the new surge protector in the quote.
The quote was emailed the next day as promised, approved by me, and an appointment was scheduled to perform the work. The day of the appointment Universal Wiring called to let me know they were on the way (who wants someone to just knock unannounced?), and even though the 3 techs went in and out the front door 30+ times that day, they put on booties each time before entering my house. (They should ask to get paid by the bootie install/uninstall.) Richard was onsite to supervise the work which was performed exactly as stated, and the amount charged was exactly what was on the quote. As they finished working at each location in the house the techs cleaned up and the house was spotless when they left.
It's been 3 or 4 weeks now and everything is perfect. No glitches. No call-backs. In this day and age it's hard to get quality service from a nice, polite, company that stands behind their work with a guarantee. Universal Wiring will be doing all my electrical work in the future.
Oh - did I mention Universal Wiring was happy to show up to quote a measly $350 worth of work and I was so impressed (and smart enough to know quality) that I spent $3500 to get the all the work I really wanted done since I knew it would be done right?
Everyone else blew me off over the phone - ahhhhh, bad mistake vendors, take a lesson from these guys on customer service.
Update from A to C rating: Turns out one of my 3-way light switches don't work consistently anymore. It was in my backyard so I didn't use it often and didn't notice right away. Sometimes switching it on in my bedroom works and sometimes it doesn't and I have to run to the breakfast area to switch it there first and then back to the bedroom. It wasn't like this previously. I went to their website to get a new appointment 2 different times towards the end of the 90-day warranty period. They never responded. I forgot to follow-up until after the 90-day period.
"Our goal is to make everyone delighted with our super service and feel safe in their home because of our expertise. We want all of our customers to love us and we want to be their electrician for life. I urge anyone to continue to look at some of the 110 reviews our customers have posted, 90 of which are "A"'s and the dozen Page of Happiness Nominations; with one Page of Happiness listing. Our prices are not intended to take advantage of anyone. They are calulated to allow us to handle the extra overhead it takes to provide superior service. I would rather spend a little extra to insure our service is spectacular than to cut corners and provide an inferior service. Most other companies, let alone electrcians do not understand this. So you may be able to find a "cheaper" price, but what is not there? Is it a license or insurance or background and drug testing for their technicians who are going to your home? Workers compensation insurance is very expensive: as much as 10% of any job. If another electrican is working at your home and they get hurt, are you protected from liablity? If the service company working at your home is not covered then you, as the homeowner, are liable. This year alone, 255 electricans have applied with us; I have hired 2. Where are those other 253 electricians working? I have been in business for 20 years. Customers call us regularly to inspect; and usually repair the work the "electrician" who was priced less than us. I find that the reason the other electrician was priced less was simpy due to the fact that they priced less actual work. Because most consumers are not aware of the 1000 page electric code book, it is easy for an electrician to take advantage of a homeowner by not doing enough work. In older homes, there may not be an easy way to do things, but we would rather educate the homeowner about their entire system than do inferior work and make an easy sale."
"Our goal is to take care of the electrical system for all of our customers. Sometimes, in older homes, there is no easy fix. We would rather educate the homeowner about their entire system than get an easy sale be recomending a "simple" repair that could lead to a dangerous situation."
