Will and his crew were extremely professional for the whole process. They were very up front about everything and there were no surprises during the work. If I need more electrical work, I'll definitely use them again.
Description of Work: We have an old house that had an aluminum electrical mainline in a corroded underground conduit. Universal trenched our yard and laid a new copper mainline inside PVC. Also, they completely replaced our old panel and subpanel with a new one. It took one full day to complete the work.

I want to thank this member for the opportunity to repair his electrical. For the price stated we were adding a recessed light with new wiring. that price is less than 5 times the parts. So this member found someone to do the job for the price of the parts. there are some people out there who will work on your electrical for free. I am sure some work for beer. Buyer beware when they fall off the ladder that the borrowed from you

This service went great. They were able to come on the same day as the call. the air was not working at all. they diagnosed that the air handler had fried some wires and needed to be replaced, That was on Friday. They came out on Saturday and replaced what needed to be replaced. Excellent and quick service with very good pricing.

This service call was excellant.
Description of Work: Air was not working well. One side of house was hot and the other was cold. They came out. Recomended adding a new return in the hot side of house. They did it and that fixed the imbalance in the house.Being over seventy and on Social Security, I was gratefull that they did not try to sell me an entire new system, but fixed what was needed. The last Air company I used did try to replace the entire system.

The check up was a good price. I liked the young man who did the service, he was very nice. However, he gave me a quote of $545.00 (or so) for a repair that I got done for $185 from another company. Actually, the second company told me why I was getting some dirt on the coils and repaired that as well as the original problem.

My AC went out Friday at 5:30. Universal had a technician out within an hour. Ricky, the tech, was extremely professional, polite, and focused on the problem. I also noticed how clean, pressed, and professional his appearance was. He diagnosed the problem with my AC compressor, replaced the capacitor, and put in a hard start kit. I think he gave me a realistic assessment of my AC's current situation, recommended I replace the compressor, and consider replacing the 9 year old unit completely. I paid $700 for the parts and labor, which seems very high to me -- the only drawback! The next day I received an estimate from Glenn, their salesperson. He was also very professional and personable. However, again the problem is that the options and prices he offered me were quite expensive. I have no doubt that they would do a great job on installation and maintenance.
Description of Work: The technician, Ricky, evaluated my current AC situation, replaced the capacitor, and installed a hard start kit. He advised me to at least replace the compressor, and probably to replace the whole unit.

After spending $23,000.00 & being inconvenienced for several wks in Aug. 2010, we were shocked to find after the fact that we'd been given cheaper metal outlet boxes instead of the plastic ones agreed on, and that most weren't grounded. This is inexcusable & dangerous, and the fact that a worker came back & added grounds to most of the metal boxes doesn't change the fact that the job was done incorrectly & deceptively to begin with. Absolutely would never hire them again. Deeply regret having written a positive report at first, & then not writing in again to clarify all the problems. There were more, but the ungrounded metal boxes were the biggest issue.
Description of Work: We regret having ever begun working with Universal Wiring. I wouldn't be surprised if many people are confused by them. There's a big discrepancy between initial presentation & the actual work done. For us, initially, all seemed above average, but we discovered afterwards that they had not done all of the work they'd agreed to, & had actually done some of it so badly that it was very dangerous. They made a very good 1st impression, professional & pleasant demeanor by 1st guy, Will, who was their estimate-guy & liaison-person. The actual work was done by several other guys, varying in experience & courtesy, one especially surly. They re-wired most of our 100-yr-old house, which took them longer than they expected. As time passed, their courtesy diminished. We know that some of their supervisors were unhappy w/ the length of time that it was taking them to finish our re-wire project. We don't blame them for taking time, but we DO blame them for cutting corners, perhaps to pacify increasing pressure from above. At first, we thought they'd done a very good job, & I wrote a glowing & positive review for Angie's List. I'm now sorry that I didn't follow up with telling Angie's List how things ended AFTER I wrote the review. The City inspector found that most of the new boxes for outlets, switches, etc, were metal & UNGROUNDED!!!(We'd been promised ALL plastic boxes & that ALL would be GROUNDED!) To be fair, gotta say that a worker came out & added "rat-tails" or some type of grounding device to the metal boxes, so that we could pass City inspection. However, 4 boxes were never checked b/c they were behind large pieces of furniture. Universal told us to remember those 4 boxes & to have them checked & grounded, if needed, if we ever moved those furniture pieces again. (Irresponsible, unprofessional, & dangerous) In my opinion, they should have moved those furniture pieces themselves to make the corrections. I had to spend several hours following the Universal worker from box to box, pointing out any he missed, to make sure every one was checked & a ground was added (except for those 4 mentioned). A hallway ceiling light & closet light have stopped working, after Universal did their work. We don't know who to call to have this repaired - we don't know who we can trust.

I want to thank this member for spending so much money with us and giving us her trust. We have already reached out to this member regarding any leftover issues. We deserve this mediocre review. At the time we completed the job, this member gave us an A rated report on Angies List for this very same job. If you read on, we have over 150 A rated reports. Many of them from a similarly extensive job. We pride ourselves on our ability to provide an awesome service experience to our customers no matter what size the job. Many companies would have never agreed to perform such an extensive job. Yet we perform this very same rewire project almost weekly with excellent results. I am a master electrician and owner of the company and all work is my responsiblity and I am willing to own that. I review hundreds of applications before I hire one electrician; and even then we monitor them and train them to our hire standards. That is my number one job: providing trained and able electricians to my customers to the point where the service experience is awesome and the customer is left with worry free installation. We had a jouneyman level electrician return to us after having to leave to take care of his father. he left us on good tems and had a good performance history. so when we put him in charge of this members project, I was confident in his ability. But we always permit projects of this nature, because that gives the homeowner an objective, third party opinion. Why he chose to use metal boxes, i am not sure. But I can reassure you that they are, in fact, more expensive and more labor intensive to install. Also, because of the type of wire that is used industry wide for home rewiring, they are unnecessary. Plastic boxes are approved and preferred because the are less expensive, easier to install, and you dont have to bond them, which is tying the ground wire to them so that they are grounded. We bonded all the boxes at the direction of the inspectoer and the permit for the project was finalled. When I recently found out that 4 boxes had been left out form this AL review, I fell out of my chair, i was livid! Thats my job d*****! Even If the inspector had missed all the boxes and I had discovered it, I still would have endured the embarrassment of having to come in and bond all the boxes, even after the inspector approved us and the customer had paid us. Why? Well, that is the easiest way to stay in business for 20 years: Say what you do and do what you say. No matter what. We owe this customer a couple of small tasks. An I hope we can re-earn her trust. Not only will we make those small repairs, but we will go over that job in detail to ensure that everything is excellent. She still has a ten year warranty on the work we have done. And I will stand behind that guarantee.

I paid $59 for the pleasure of receiving their OUTRAGEOUS estimate. They wanted $575 to replace two outlets. Yes oulets. You know the receptacles where you actually plug in your appliances that consist of two screws and two wires and cost maybe $6 each. Excuse me!!!! They were punctual, professional and courteous and I am sure they will come up with some rationale as to why this is a fair price but even the most inexperienced person can see that there is something wrong here. I feel sorry for anyone who pays their prices without question because even though you are getting a licensed electrician they are seemingly taking advantage of people. I have a call into another electrician for an estimate and I can assure this will not be over a $200 job.

I normally would thank this member for giving us an opportunity to make his repair and then address his concern. But, in this case, I am not convinced this is my customer. Which, in cases like this, usually leads back to a competitior that has trouble improving his business and has one foot in bankruptsy. Why would I say that? Well I looked into the customers name and address. We have never worked on the street and we have never worked at the street number on any other named street. Now, we did work for a customer with a similar name who had us out to his rent house with a similar initial problem: outlets not working. But where he got $575 to replace outlets was nowhere to be found on our invoice. What I did find on the invoice was the cause of the bad outlets was a burned up panel not provideing power to the outlets. So what does this teach us? That when you have a contractor charge you minimal money and make a small repair, it may or may not be in your best interest. A superficiall repair can seem to fix an initial problem, but it has also been proven that the $200 superficial repair is easier to sell that a permanent repair that may cost $3000, which is what we prescribed for this customer to "fix the outlets". Many technicians you may have out to your home may be too scared to give you the real bad news, but are also scared of thier boss and need to sell you something, even if it is only a bandaid. Beware the bandaid, not the bid to make a real and permanent repair of a system, that when not properly maintained, has proven time and again to burn buildings and electrocute people.

While the electricians were working on our house they told us that one of the ducts wasn't actually connected. No wonder the back was hot! We had their a/c division come out and give us an estimate on new duct work. They came out at the appointed time, were extremely professional and neat and did the work in a timely fashion. Since then we've had them come out for additional repairs. They have brought up other issues, and I do detect a bit of a soft-sell , or is it upselling?, but their not pushy about it, and I have no doubt that they're right about our aging a/c units being on the proverbial banana peel. They put dampers in on the new ducts, which remedied some of the issues with uneven cooling; however, we're still not happy with the air distribution, although they've come out twice to adjust it. I will call them this week for another try. We've had so many people working on our house over the years on things that we no little or nothing about. Basically, we just have to take their word. Sometimes that's worked out and sometimes it hasn't. We did sign a service contrat with this company and have already had an after-hours call where they were prompt and thorough, so I think they have promise for the future. I certainly don't have any problem recommending them.
Description of Work: Replaced all ductwork in our attic initially. Since then, they've repaired an additional a/c system in our garage and repaired a problem with the main house this week. Came out for this at 7 pm on Friday of Memorial day weekend. We found out the a/c wasn't working when our plan landed from our vacation! Was really nice to not have to wait. We signed up for a service contract with them, and so far, it's been worth it.

For the most part, the people working on the house were extremely neat and professional. They were very helpful about identifying problems as well as explaining what we might need to do in the future that would bring the house up to code but differentiated between the things that were just not in compliance with the current code vs. things that were actually hazardous. I appreciated their honesty on these issues, since we really don't need to spend any more money on this now. While they were in the attic, they solved the mystery of our very warm back den. We've been air conditioning the attic for a while! We ended up hiring their a/c people to redo our ductwork, and that's how I absolutely know they were right because now the den is cool. I would certainly recommend them again.
Description of Work: During Ike, the weatherhead for our electricity service was damaged and we had a stopgap repair. It was really a hazard and we finally needed to have it repaired. I don't know about the cost, because, frankly, we were impressed enough with the reviews from the BBB, Ebsco, and Angie's List to decide that we just wanted the work done and done well. Of course, once we got started with all the things that we needed done but had postponed, the list got longer and longer. Of course, we had to have an upgrade to the circuit box as well. They fixed a chronic problem with the wiring to a pump we have for a water feature and upgraded a number of exterior outlets. They also rewired the connection to our driveway gate lights so that they finally are working again.

Called these guys to get my AC checked out since I have been having troubles cooling my home and saw they had an online deal. They were responsive and friendly. The tech said I had low pressure and most likely a leak in my coils. He said due to the low pressure he could not find the leak. So I okay'd the fill which I understand to be very little that he added overall to get the system running again. He said it was a set price for the fill not matter how much he added to the system. Once he put the coolant in the systems he confirmed the leak in the coil (I was not there at the time to see for myself). He mentioned that the replacement of the coil plus the TXV valve that was stuck(he mentioned this was due to the low pressure) had to be replaced and $1000s would need to be spend even with warranty. The tech even mentioned that his business was one of the most expensive in the area (due to contracted and highly experienced techs). So I stopped him there to think things over and since he got the A/C running again. Fast forward to a week ago where i decided to get a second opinion and once my AC stopped working again a month later... The second company said my capacitor was out and the TXV valve need to be replaced. NO LEAK he mentioned. Odd. The broken valve he explained was cause for a low pressure reading, but he did not detect a leak. This was another $700+ job, but it did get it running again. Hopefully for good and there really is no leak. I have to just wait and see. Overall leak or no leak, I was charged almost $400 to get AC fluid in my system with the additional 50$ spring check sale. I claim it all a ripoff personally, but what can you do when you do no have cooling and the summer is approaching with the Houston heat? I have the receipt and it does not even mention a leak, but only the fact that he put coolant in the system. You would think they would document this for future use. A little suspect to me.
Description of Work: Placed a few ounces of fluid in my A/C unit + A/C Spring check deal.

My name is Ed Valot and I am the owner of Universal Home Experts. I want to thank this member for giving us a try and to apologize. We have already reached out to this member to verify his experience and offer a refund. As a successfull home service company who has over 150 A rated reviews on Angies List, we provide employment to like minded, customer service oriented technicians. I have to review hundereds of applicants to hire just one technician. I do this because, in reality, thisis my business: To provide technical expertise to homeowners to creates a worry free service experience. I admit it doesnt always work like we intend. This technician was no longer working for us even before this member posted this review. Yet even during the 2 weeks he worked for us, he created a poor service experience that is not equal to my own high statndards.By the way, he worked for other well known companies in Houston and is still working for a company that serves Houston and he may show up at your home. But not if you call us, because I cannot tolerate any deficincy in technical expertise or customer service abilites. So to all Angies List members, my message to you is that in our effort to provide you with the best: technician, service experience, warrany, I will make a mistake. And I want to let you know that I will always stand up for any issue that arises with my customers.

They performed a detailed safety inspection. Looked like they did a good job on that but then they submitted a very expensive bid to repair and it was way over priced. Got everything on the list they gave me done at a much smaller cost and new company that did repairs was also on Angie'slist.
Description of Work: Purchased the electrical safety inspection. They gave me a detailed report which was good but then they gave me a bid to repair that was 10 times higher than what another electrical company referred by Angies list charged.

My experience with Universal was mixed. Originally I purchased an Angie's List coupon for an "A/C Tune up and inspection" I saw no tune up performed and as they inspected my system they told me my it was old, which I already knew, and that I needed a new one. No "tune up" that I saw took place took place. What I got for $49 were scare tactics and soft pressure salesmanship, albeit nice and professional. This particular coupon was bunk and just a way to hook the customer for more, I found this disingenuous. They will not be reeling me in for more. This first gentleman just ended up hooking me up with a visit from one of their salesmen. Both gentlemen were neat and well uniformed, professional, courteous and punctual but in the end they ended up giving me the car sales man routine.Everything was explained to me in great detail and good manner. Their quote though, was in my opinion high. $12,000 on the lowest seer unit and it climbed from there to new car range. I found a higher SEER split system hvac unit from the same manufacturer at $4700 with shipping included several places online. If you have disposible income and want to pay extra for the extras these are your guys. If you are on a more modest budget and want the best band for your buck, look elsewhere

I want to thank this member for purchaising the Angies List Big Deal for his Spring Check. I also want to thank him for the A ratings he gave us in regards to professionalism, etc.. We performed hundreds of Spring Checks this year and the vast majority of the systems we inspected were in good to great condition. However sometimes we are the bearer of bad news. As much as I would like to make my customers "happy", It is more important that I am honest, transparent and keep them safe. As far as the price comparison, we would have purchased the equiment for around $4700. And then what? The equipment does not install itself, It takes over 5 years to properly train a technician so that when your system is installed, it doesnt put CFC gas into you home, where your children sleep or leak water thorough your ceiling and damage your furniture or wood floor. There is lot to installing an HVAC system in your home and you should not let the cheapest guy you can find do it. Imagine that you bought a brand new car ( similar price) and the manufacturer delivered it toyour home in pieces and it was required that you assemlbe it in your driveway. That is exactly what is happening when a company replaces your ac system in oyour home.

Definitely not a pleasant experience!
Description of Work: I had Universal Home Experts come and give me a quote for wiring 3 data connections and one phone connection in my building for my small business. They were responsive and punctual, but the quote was OUTRAGEOUS! They quoted me $2373 for the job. Then when I expressed surprise at the expense, the man made a phone call and said, he could reduce that to $1780 (the process of making the phone call and magically reducing the price seemed shady to me!) Oh, and I had to pay $99 for the privilege of receiving the quote... I ended up having the job completely done, and done well, by another company for $450!

I want to thank this member for the opportunity to make her electrical repair. I agree. If you call a company to complain about the price and they "magically" lower the price, that is shady. That is not what happened here. All of our invoices and proposals are scanned into our system. I merely looked at the proposal with this members signature on it to determined what happened. There they were... both quoted prices: $2192 and $1644. Wait, they are different from what the member stated. Yes, the prices the member stated include sales tax. Which is what you do when you work for a business. Which is probably what the other contractor did not charge. The other contractor is also probably not a licensed electrical contractor (Low voltage does not require that). But there is no state licensing for Low Voltage contractors. So there is no way to determine if the contractor has liability insurance, let alone at those prices, workers compensation insurance. Please beware of super low prices. All contractors who do business in the Houston area have the same overhead. If a company chooses to not have certain overhead, and I doubt they are choosing not to profit, then you the customer will suffer because of it. And it may be a disaster like a workplace injury. If the company does not have the overhead of workers comp insurance, then you, as the property owner are liable for medical bills, lost wages and any future complications resulting form the injury for the rest of the workers life. And that would definitely not be a pleasant experience! If I could figure out how to lower my overhead and be super cheap and still be able to bend over backwords in the middle of the night during a thuderstorm and still smell good, I would do it. But my customers are the most important part of my business and I will spend the overhead to take care of them in the way that they have become accustomed to. Just look at the 147 A rated reviews from our customers on Angies List. I must have the right idea for taking care of my customers.

Our home office fault breaker was randomly tripping, even with nothing more than one lamp plugged in. The first day a professional, friendly serviceman named Dennis came out right on our agreed time. Their paperwork is very detailed and it allowed me to understand every issue they found and choose the best option for us to fix them. At the end of his trip, he told me that the work performed would be provided by another serviceman, Jonathan, the next day so I knew who to expect. The next day Jonathan came, again on time, and solved our problem. He was here for a few hours but as I was shown the day before, it was a lengthy process to do the work correctly so I knew to expect that. We signed up for their service partner plan, the problem has not shown up since and now our home has been updated with the whole house surge protection that we had seen on a home improvement TV show a week prior and wanted it for our home. We were quite pleased with their professionalism. On a personal note, I appreciated how they understood I do not have even the slightest clue how my home works and took the time to make sure I knew what was going on to make an informed decision.
Description of Work: Circuit restoration in home office, panel tune-up and a surge protection update throughout our home for safety.

The company representative came out to my house and gave me an estimate. My house needed to be completely rewired. We gave him the go ahead but before they could start the work my husband became ill and we had to cancel it indefinitely.

They were very professional and came in and did a very nicely written report that I was pleased with. My only issue was that afterwards they gave me the hard sell for several thousands of dollars worth of service that they said I needed.
Description of Work: I used them for a Big Deal for a house safety wiring inspection.

They seem like a great company, and went above and beyond to try and resolve the issues I had. I got a personally delivered refund from them the very next day. I am confident they would be able to tackle any job I had. They have a better warranty on their labor than I have on mine. I wish I would have had Angie's list a couple of years ago.
Description of Work: Got the $50 ac tune up and system check, They were prompt and time, service guy was very professional and explained what he was doing, However during the service I had flipped the cut off for the unit, and this shut down the compressor, and they were unable to complete the service, due to the compressor not coming back up.

The men arrived on time and got the job done by the end of the day. We added a couple of changes which required one to return the next day, but we are very pleased with the outcome. Everything went as planned. When they were finished, they vacuumed and cleaned up after themselves leaving my house (office) as clean as they found it.
Description of Work: We were moving our office into our 1947 home. Many of the electrical outlets needed to be re-wired. New phone lines and Cat-5 lines had to be laid in the attic and dropped between walls in order to add outlets to accommodate our equipment.
