Thank you for the opportunity to make your electrical repair. I apologize that you thought we were inventing work. Our mission is to provide permanent repair solutions for our customer's homes through education and transparency. As for many electrical issues, prevention is the only solution because the system failure may lead to shock or fire hazards, and to us that is not acceptible. There are many companies who only want to make a quick repair and not be sure that your system is safe. If this leads to some thinking that we only wat to upsell, then I accept that. What I wont accept is that we failed to educate our customers on a very important part of their home.

Scheduling went fine and technician arrived on time. He and I walked through my home, checking outlets, switches, and making note of minor issues. However, once we got to the breaker panel, he quickly pointed out that I had a "dangerous" Federal Pacific breaker panel. He went on to explain that although I might not be experiencing any issues yet, that eventually I would, and pointed out the issues with the panel. He also presented a booklet that reiterated his explanations. At this point, it started to feel more like a sales pitch than providing information. He worked up a quote, I thanked him for his time, and he left. I did not schedule any work afterward. I called two other smaller electricians that I located on Angie's List, and had 15-20 minute conversations with both of them about my panel. They both explained that there is a possibility that I might have issues with my panel at some point, but added that if I wasn't having issues now, then they would not do anything if they were in my position. They also explained that some of the issues that the Universal Wiring technician brought up weren't really issues at all (rust on non-conducting surfaces inside the panel, for example), and that all panels in our humid climate will have this. Each of these two electricians also provided quotes for panel replacement that were approximately $800 to $1,000 less than Universal Wiring. Please note that neither of these two electricians came to my home to inspect my panel. After speaking to these other two electricians, I became more comfortable that my home was not going to spontaneously ignite, and I will not use Universal Wiring for any other services in the future. If and when I do need electrical work done, I will call one of these other two electricians.
Description of Work: I purchased the Angie's List deal for an electrical inspection for $74.

Thank you for allowing us to perform an electrical inspection of your home. Our mission is simple: Provide permanent repair options through eduation and transparency. I am now concerned for this member. She has a time bomb of a breaker panel in her home called a Federal Pacific Electric (FPE). The issues with this panel is known thoughout the electrical industry as a serious issue that can only be solved by replacing the panel. Do not take my word for this. GOOGLE IT: Federal Pacific Electric panels. You will find a lot of information on this. FPE panels allow the electricity to flow through. I get responses like this: " MY FPE panel works great, it has NEVER tripped a breaker." That is exactly the problem. Electrical breakers act like the breaks in your car. When you are driving and there is a problem on the road in front of you, what do you do? You step on the breaks to stop the car. Breakers do the same job, when the electricity is flowing throughout your home and there is a possible fire hazard the breaker turns off the electricity. I am not happy that this member is following the advice of people who claim to be electricians, but think that waiting to replace the panel after it fails is the right solution. Before it fails it may take your house with it. So to all Angies List members: Fine, do not use us to replace your FPE panel. But find an licensed electrical contractor who knows about this issue to do it now. If the electrician you speak with tells your that your FPE panel is ok and we'll just change it when it fails....RUN. That so called electrician is so lazy, that he is willing to put your families life in jeopardy just so he doesnt have to work that day.

They were on time and polite. However, the "tune-up" did not include any actual servicing - they did not clean the coils, for example. They merely told me things which were wrong with the system (low on coolant, voltage problem with motor, rusty drip pan) but did not offer to follow up on fixing anything. They did not give any hard and firm recommendations on what should be done.

Overall, the service was excellent. We received calls from the office and from Dennis prior to his arrival.
Description of Work: We called Universal Home Experts and scheduled an appointment for Monday 10/8/12. Our appointment was rescheduled for 2p-4p today and technician called to say he could come earlier and arrived at 12:30p. Dennis was very professional and explained everything in detail. We replaced fixtures on front and back porches. Universal Home Experts charges by service and not by the hour. $164.00 for back porch sconce fixture and $248.00 for front porch hanging fixture. Work is warrantied for 3 years. We thought the charges were high, but we are pleased with the work and results.

I contacted this company because I wanted to purchase the home inspection coupon for $74.00 on Angie's List. I called before I purchased the coupon because I live out of towna nd have tenants in my home that I wanted the inspection on. They agreed to inspect the home eith my tenant in it for the coupon price. They took all the contact information and then told me they wanted me to fax them a preauthorization for my credit card in csae any other services needed to be done. I explained to them that I was not comfortable faxing a blank preauthorization for my credit card and that I would be happy to make myself available during the time that they were doing the inspection and when/if they told me what needed to be repaired and the cost, I would be happy to immediately fax them an authorization for the specific amount. They were not willing to accept those terms and refused to do the $74.00 inspection without the credit card authorization form. This is NOT RIGHT!!! In the coupon, they offered a service for a specific, prepaid price. They should NOT need a blank credit card authorization to redeem the coupon. I refused to authorize my credit card and they refused to do the work they are advertising on Angie's List. Sounds like a bait and switch to me.

I want to thank this member for considering us for her electrical inspection. I apologize for any impression that seemed discourteous. We will honor any request for the Angie's List Big Deal. The best method to do this is through Angies List. I am not sure why this member did not want to purchase the Big Deal through Angie's List. We have a simple mission: Protect our customers from the hazards that can arise form their electrical, plumbing and AC systems with education and transparency. I think that protecting our customers form identiy theft and fraud is important as well. So we have adopted PCI compliance practices to protect our customers. The most secure way is to meet the homeowner who intends to pay in person at their home. 99% of our customers are homeowners. We will work for out of state landlords, but there is a different procedure. Sending us a signed authorization when a credit card willl not be present at the job is for your protection. Using your credit card has many inherent protections and you may dispute most charges that occur. We only charge a customer's card based on their approval. This member had no reason to fear that we were arbitrarily going to charge her card for any reason other than what she had approved. The reason to use us over others is that we are responsible for the welfare of our customers: This includes education, transparency, doing what we say we are going to do, onwnership of any issues or problems and standing behind our work.

A new technician came out who I never worked with before. He tells me the start up capacitor needs to be changed. The technician then comes back to tell me the compressor may be bad as well. I decided to wait for the compressor to cool down before troubleshooting. The first technician wasn't able to answer my questions. They sent out a second who tried to upsell me on a new air conditioning unit. I received a second opinion before replacing the compressor and I haven't had an issue with it since. I also had them come out to look at my electrical in my guest home. They again tried to upsell and use fear tactics to make a bigger profit.

I want to thank this member for considering us for her ac repairs. The ac system she is referring to was installed by another company and was brand new. For some reason they called us. We arrived on the same day. The capacitor on the condenser was bad, on a brand new system. Since the capacitor was bad the condenser was not running and was FROZEN. The technician could not diagnose a system that is not running. For FREE, we waited for an hour for the system to settle down so it could be run. A BRAND NEW condenser should not burn out capacitors, period. The system was so poorly installed that we considered replacement as an option to essentially restart a guarantee for her since she was not willing to contact the company that installed it. Since she wanted more information on a replacement option, the second tech who showed up on her invitation was our REPLACEMENT specialist. As a part of her service partner plan, she is eligible for an annual electrical inspection which she requested. This would also allow us to determine that there was not an electrical problem causing the ac problem. Imagine that: when your ac is not working, who do you call? We will send both an ac tech and an electrician out to your home to determine exactly the cause. OK, how many of you have had any kind of technician out to your home lately. Did they fix the one problem that you called about? Did any of you have subsequent problems afterwards? Have you ever taken your car to a mechanic for a specific repair and then a week later there is something else wrong? This occurs because the technician or mechanic did not evaluate your whole system. They put on their blinders and just “fixed” the one problem that you saw. They are the experts, why aren’t they being the expert? If you went to the doctor, would you be upset if they merely diagnosed your flu symptoms, yet there were other issues wrong with you that if left untreated could be life threatening? As a company, we come behind other contractors that missed major problems daily. The technician comes in, makes the one repair the homeowner is aware of, collects $200 and drives away. Yet serious issues that need to be repaired are left behind because the technician did not look! We have made a conscious choice to educate our customer and not be the company that fixes and leaves. We value the safety and comfort of our customers and we want to make sure. Even at the risk of a few customers accusing us of up selling, we will not stop educating our customers on their whole system and giving realistic, thought out options to make real and permanent repairs. So if you want a quick fix that will potentially last as long as the repair took or Band-Aid real problems, call another company, please. If you want an honest, transparent education about your system so that you can make choices, then we are the company to call. By the way, even after an hour long system evaluation, 80% of the repairs we make are simple repairs because there is nothing wrong with the system as a whole.

The workman was very good and I would recommend them. He came out took the unit apart, cleaned it, checked the fan's balance and found that one of the weights was missing. The only reason we did not use them to do the repair work was we remembered we had a home warrantee contract which would cover the cost of the repair.

They told me that I needed A new capacitor {discounted price to me} $299.00They told me I needed a new programable thermostat {discounted to me} $449.00They told me I needed a new blower motor {Special purchase price} $471.00Total quote was $1348.00 {Warranty plan required} Had a competative company offer a free warranty fix the system for $360.00 {this includes gas money for the drive to my house $30.00}He replaced the Blower motor and the system has been running perfect ever since. By the way he did not replace the programmable thermostat that was there or the capacitor.
Description of Work: Universal home experts came to my home to give me an estimate, but it turned out to be much more than that. The workers were named Enrique and Lee. When they were putting together this estimate they removed a capacitor that is designed to extend the life of the main capacitor. They did not understand that and without my permission removed it. They put in jumpers and a new capacitor upstairs without my permission. Remember this was supposed to be just a quote.

I want to thank this customer for the opportunity to make his AC repair. I also want to thank the over 150 members who gave us A rated reviews and over 20 Pages of Happiness reviews. It will take you awhile to find all of those. They are among over 200 reviews from over the last 7 years. This member called us because his ac system was not working and within the hour we were at his home. He had another ac tech out to his home just one week before. I checked the invoice notes: The notes, which the customer has a copy of, state: that the blower motor is burned out. The member states:”They put in jumpers and a new capacitor upstairs without my permission.” In order to confirm the bad blower motor, our technician had to replace the capacitor with a new one which we did for free. The previous ac tech had missed this. Member states: “they removed a capacitor that is designed to extend the life of the main capacitor. They did not understand that and without my permission removed it.” The capacitor that this member was referring to was installed incorrectly. What was installed was two capacitors where one as needed. Now, there is such a thing as a “Hard start kit” that helps failing capacitors and condensers to start. But this is not what was present. What was present was merely two capacitors that were the wrong size trying to do the job of one properly sized one. The previous ac tech from the other company, (maybe another company, possibly an unlicensed technician) is the one that installed that mess and lied to his customer. So my question to this member is: “Is the competitive company that came out for the warranty also the company that one week before did not find the problem and installed the incorrectly sized capacitor? Was this the company that after they took your money and the system failed again, you could not reach them? Angie’s List Members: Please take note. You cannot get good service and a cheap price. This member is complaining about our price. What about the time and comfort he lost when his cheap company misdiagnosed the system, made a repair that would shorten the life of his system and then was nowhere to be found when the repair failed. My JOB is to protect homeowners. I protect them from danger by checking backgrounds and drug testing (those guys are working for my competition). I protect homeowners from incorrect repairs by hiring the best and then training them constantly. I protect homeowners from wasted time by stocking trucks correctly, so that the tech has the right capacitor and even a blower motor. If you do not care about your safety, your time or your home and only want the cheapest price, Please, Please, Please…. do not call us. We will only disappoint you. We are not cheap. I will say it again: We are not the guy who may be a sex offender. We are not the guy who will miss-diagnose your repair, take your money and then not answer the phone. We are the good guys, the experts and the safe company to call.

The technician reviewed all of the tasks with me and calculated the cost by a standard chart. As he worked through the list he showed me that one of the tasks (the breaker panel) was not necessary to upgrade as the inspector had said, and that rewiring the the three-way would be more trouble than first estimated, because running new romex and consequently tearing out drywall was involved. In these cases he struck them from the list and saved me the expense. All work was done at the time of the visit, with parts on hand in the truck. It was completed for the agreed cost, and all work has remained satisfactory and running properly.
Description of Work: The work consisted of a list of six different repairs and improvements needed for my 12 year-old house, recommended by a professional building inspector. 1 Rewire a three-way switch which was incorrectly installed by the builder.2 Fix a light fixture that was damaged by remodeling3 Add an outlet 4 Upgrade the breaker service panel5 Make the connection to the garbage disposal up to code6 Determine cause of bad connection in a light switch and repair.

Technician showed up on time and was very courteous and professional. He offered some additional (add-on) services to improve the performance of our system or perhaps extend the lifespan, but these were significant additional cost. (we passed). I was very pleased, however, that the technician gave us a very detailed estimate for replacement of our HVAC system. We know the system is on its "last legs" and he gave us a few options for what to consider when time comes to replace them. I appreciated the time and effort he spent developing the estimate.
Description of Work: Purchased two Coupon Deals for a $49 "Spring 15-Point Inspection and Tune-up." We have two HVAC units. The technician performed the work, but I was expecting a more detailed service. I should have read the coupon closer (or, more honestly, perhaps there simply wasn't enough detail on the coupon) but the service was heavy on the "inspection" and virtually non-existent on the "tune-up". Upon conclusion, the technician politely explained the work he performed, but it didn't seem like it was "15" line-items. I am sure the technician looked over our two HAVC systems and probably made a few assessments, but aside from telling us that the filters and the cooling fins were dirty, I'm not sure what the "tune-up" services were. In any case, I think we paid $100 for somebody to come and check the voltage on the HVAC system and ... well, I'm not entirely sure what else we got for the money paid. I guess I was expecting a "15-Point Tune-up (that includes inspection)" - not the same as a "15-Point Inspection." Again, I think the overall disappointment was largely due to our expectations versus the terms of the coupon.

Bought an Angie's List deal for A/C service and asked that they estimate cost to move A/C units while there to conduct the service. Technician said coolant level was low but did not add more coolant. Quoted to add a switch in the attic and to move the units - but prices were literally 3 TIMES next highest estimate. Apparently, A/C work is heart surgery to these guys. Would not use again.

Response from Universal Home Experts
Thank your purchaising the Angies Big Deal and having us out to your home. It is true, we consider every repair that we perform on our customers home the equivalent to heart surgery. If every contractor out their felt that strongly about their customers safety and well being, homeowners would repair and replace a lot less systems that had been installed for a third the price of what they should have been installed for.

Response was prompt, and accommodating. Electrician reviewed entire home, gave some very insightful opinions. The only problem with his quote were some pretty high prices for several of the individual items on the list. I have not had any of the work done yet due to other circumstances, as well as the high prices quoted. But I plan to get additional quotes, and make a decision soon to get the work done. (NOTE: This is a home I own but do not live in. Currently vacant)
Description of Work: Took advantage of an Angies List "Big Deal" for an electrical service quote for $74.

Response from Universal Home Experts
Thank you for the opportunity to perform an Angies LIst Big Deal Electrical Inspection. Though we are in the business of making electrical repairs, our guiding principal is to educate homeowners about their electrical systems so that they fully understand it and can make a truly informed decision. Of course, we want to make the repair as well and will back that up with up to a 10 year warranty, depending on the repair and a 100% satisfaction guarantee. We feel strongly about the safety of your home and the important thing is that any safety issues are repair by a licensed electrical contractor. I recommend when you are looking to hire an electrician, ask them about "grandfathering". If they feel that a condition you have with your electrical system is grandfathered, that means that they do not have to repair it because it was code when it was installed. So great, you save money. Something to consider: The electrical code is revised every three years. So concepts from the past are improved or even phased out competely as a bad idea. Electrical sytems as a standard part of the home have only been around since about 1930. So if the home was built even in 1970, half of the evolution of todays safety systems occured after the electrical system was insatalled and the date stamp of the grandfathered installation. If you had a roof that was that old, you would have replaced it fifteen years ago, you would have not "grandfathered" it as being ok because it was ok when it was installed. The end result of an unsafe electrical system can be catastrophic. So a good electrician will understand this and still will know to repair a "working" system that is found to be truly unsafe.
