They knew what they were talking about. From what I understand, their price was a little on the high side. To me, they were just another company. There was nothing that stood out. On the great side, there was nothing that they did wrong.
Description of Work: Universal Home Experts formerly Universal Wiring came out to give us an estimate on electrical services. We have aluminum wirings in our house and we were getting an estimate to find out how much it will cost to replace it or to replace all the outlets with the copper aluminum wire.

Everything went well. I still need to get the doorbell fixed, but that's not what they came to do. I was pleased with their willingness to educate me on the issues involved, in an area where I am not familiar with the building codes.
Description of Work: I had a coupon for an electrical inspection of my home. Due to it's size, I purchased two of the coupons. We have a new home, and the electrician who worked on the home never did get the front doorbell working properly. We have two chimes, one upstairs near the master bedroom, and one downstairs. Because of this issue, I was a little concerned about the wiring in the home in general, so to reassure myself, we had the inspection done. They were very thorough, they showed me what sort of things they looked for and assured me that the wiring in my home was actually pretty well done, it was just that the type of electricians that do new home installs aren't as good at problem-solving stuff, so that was really a big piece of the issue. The house is safe, the service was polite and informative.

They came to evaluate, and I signed up with them. I think they sabotaged my A/C, because it was working fine when they day before, after they left, we had NO A/C and had never had trouble with it until the day they came to evaluate. And it was HOT, yes, even in November. The work went over 2 or 3 days. On the last day, the ceiling fan in a bedroom quit. It was working that morning when I went to work, and when I came home it was dead. I asked the worker who was here if they disconnected it and was told that no, they'd done nothing to it. So to give them credit, I thought the ceiling fan was just old. weird, again I'd had NO problems with it not working. So, I bought a new fan, my son-in-law was going to install it and told me that all the wiring to the fan in the attic had been CUT! But miraculously I had a light in the attic that I had never had before!!! So we called them back, they argued with my son and quoted me $1300 to wire and connect the fan. Geez, I'd already gone into debt for 16,800. I told them to forget it. A week or so later, the light in my shed quit, called them and a guy came out - I think it was Jason. He was here in April and did the work on the electrical. In the light of this, I was told that the plug that shorted out the light was not in the estimate on the elec. work. no biggie, he offered to cover it with a non-useable plate. I let him. In the course of the conversation, we found out that he was the one who ran the electrical in the attic for the light and had disconnected the fan because it was incorrectly wired by a subcontractor years before. While I appreciate that they disconnected something that could have turned out bad, I would have appreciated a note or a comment on what had happened instead of all the denials and run-arounds that I had gotten. Bottom line, the run arounds I got on the November job and the "sabotage" of my A/C on the day they made the sale really turned me against this company. Included in this "cost" is a check every year of the connections, heater, etc. At this point I am not sure that I want this company doing a check of even the edge of my driveway. What else will they sabotage in order to get more work?
Description of Work: They came in April 2012 for electrical and again in November for a/c, heating and ductwork. While the work in April 12 was 8000, I had no complaints other than I thought it was expensive. The issue I'm doing on this review is the November 2012 work. - replaced a/c, heating and ductwork I'm not sure of the exact date, I know it was before Thanksgiving - Veterans Day week

He did a good job but I felt we were misled. He was doing an inspection because we were selling our home. He switched out all the plugs in the bathrooms/kitchens/outdoors with GFCI protection plugs. The plugs were quite expensive. He said that these plugs were required and I found out later that they were not required because we were just fixing up the house and we were grandfathered under the building codes. New construction/remodels/etc are required to have these. He did quality work, but I was a little upset about him misleading us.
Description of Work: I had them out to inspect the home before selling it and ended up installing GFCI plugs throughout the house.

Had to change a circuit breaker to meet code; Investigate excessive heat in electrical outlet; replace outdoor electrical plug. Getting an appointment was long and arduous. But once set, he should up on time and jumped through hoops to complete the job correctly and at a fair, if not great price. Will B. the service Tech surveyed our electrical problems on 1/31/12 and gave us a detailed explanation of the problems (and their possible consequence if not repaired) and an estimate for those repairs. The estimate included options that allowed us a choice of time and amount of work. For safety reasons we chose the option to repair all major surface problems as outlined for us by Will. Will then suggested a Mag Test after the surface repairs to find any other wiring problems that might exist from the service to the outlets. We asked that the work be accomplished by end of day 2/2/13 and it was done a day early. Good explanations, courtesy by all workers and clean-up after the job were perfect. We are planning further restoration with them. We highly recommend them based on their excellent work and personal ethics.
Description of Work: 4th call soliciting my A/C business. This is the 4th time I have told them not to bother me and all but this last time did they say they would take me off that list. This time I did not give them that chance but was as rude as I could be. There never will be another job by them on the electrical work I started with them for. Please response Universal. Buyer beware.

The first time time they came and installed the fan I would give them a B, and when they came the second time and they didn't want to deal with my problem I'd give them an F. Their price is kinda high. I had to pay for the service that didn't address my problem.
Description of Work: I used Universal Home Experts formerly Universal Wiring service 2 years ago. They came to my house twice. Once they came to install a fan. The second time they came they started to give me the estimates to replace my breaker box. They did not really deal with why I called them out and had to call a different electrical company to do the job.

I want to thank this customer for allowing us to install a ceiling fan for her and then calling us when her security light went out. We did not charge her for this visit. When we arrived at her home on the same day that she called, she stated she needed “just a new light bulb”. When the electrician checked the light, he found that there was no power to the light. After further inspection he found that the wiring was UNGROUNDED and installed INCORRECTLY. Her home was built in 1970 and was grounded throughout, yet whoever added these lights to the original system used already antiquated wiring. Now here is where we are different. We do not fix WRONG! This member was mad at us for wanting to do what was correct and safe. Buyer beware. There are electrical contractors and non licensed electricians who are willing to make repairs that seem like a great deal and “CHEAP”. I only perform work that allows me to sleep at night. Therefore I will not make a repair to a dangerous system that does not remove the hazard. If you want only cheap with no regard to safety, then we are not the company to call. If you want an expert who will be truthful and transparent with you, educate you on your entire system and suggest only permanent repairs that solve safety hazards; then call us.

Arrived on time, well dressed and polite...our concern was old breaker box, and he confirmed it needed to be replaced, but quoted a price of $4000, and offered to rewire the house for $30,000. We took the information, and called a private contractor referred by friends. He replaced the breaker box, brought an attic junction box up to code, replaced/repaired/upgraded outlets, installed several Circuit Fault Interruptors, and replaced two lines for $2000.
Description of Work: In fall of 2011 (I think), a serviceman came to inspect the electrical system and breaker box in our 1962 home with a converted garage and added apartment and pool. The 'garage' had also been used as office for wrecker service company in 1980s, and several phone lines had been added.

Thank you for the opportunity to allow us to estimate your electrical project. Whether you hire us or not, we stand by our mission which is to provide permanent repair solutions with transparency by educating our customers. Please remember. There are no private electrical contractors. All electricans have to be publicly licensed by the state of Texas to perform electrical contracting. They have to provide liablity insurance as well as a master electricans trade license to work in your home. It protects you when you have an electrican in your home that you hire. It also protects you when you purchase a home where the previous homeowner had electrical work performed.

It went extremely well. Dennis came out the first day and checked the problems I wanted repaired which at first was just the pool equipment problems. He was extremely thorough and told me what we needed to do to fix the initial problem plus what we needed to do to get the house up to code. I was aware that the He fixed one circuit immediately and needed to come back after the weekend with the parts he needed to do the job we agreed on. I was aware that the main junction box was "iffy" as it was mentioned by the home inspector we employed before we bought the house. Dennis confirmed my concerns and pointed out areas within the junction box that were improperly added to, not adequately secured or wiring that was not adequately protected. Dennis gave me a detailed estimate with options. On the day of the work Dennis and a helper arrived on time and immediately went to work. They worked continuously and efficiently until the work was done on time and actually slightly under budget. I might add that it was a cold, rainy day and they worked until well after dark to get the work done. While the project was expensive (I could have probably have gotten it done for less money) I am extremely satisfied with the totally professional job and am confident that everything was done perfectly. I enjoyed dealing with Dennis and his helpers. Very personable, professional and considerate of the property and us, the customer. Dennis is a wonderful representative for his employer. I recommend Universal Home Experts without reservation.
Description of Work: Main junction box and electric service box replaced, junction box labeled to identify each circuit, surge and arc protection added, pool equipment rewired, pool equipment timers and timer box replaced, pool light junction box replaced and relocated, two new wire runs added, two outlets added on the garage wall next to the deck, new light switch for the pool lights added, inoperative exterior deck lights repaired, dimmer installed, new grounding system installed, general trouble shooting on various circuits, purchased three year service plan.

The estimator came promptly and was on-time. He reviewed my electrical service for readiness for whole house surge protection and found it to be a much bigger job than the Angie's List special would allow. I was provided an estimate for all the needed work which was several thousand dollars so we did not proceed with the project. I requested a refund from Angie's list and it was processed for me promptly.
Description of Work: I bought an Angie's List special for whole hose surge protection for $175. An estimate for whole house surge protection was provided but the electrical service on my house would have required a significant upgrade to add the surge protection so we did not proceed. I requested a refund from Angie's List for the $175 and it was processed promptly.

Thank you for the opportunity to install surge protection on your home. Homes that are less than 20 years old are simpler to install surge protection on. The older the home, the more the code has changed, which makes it difficult to attach modern, compliant equipment to the older equipment.

We saw the offer on Angie's list, considered it a good addition to our home and the price was reasonable. Any type of service required for our home goes through Angie's list. We are not long time residents of Texas and are not familiar with service providers. With the assurance from Angie's list, any work needed we try and use one of the companies that are listed. The work involved was minimal...but gives us assurance that we are protected. Can't ask for anything more.
Description of Work: We had a whole house serge protector installed and were very pleased with the installation. The installer was on time, explained what he was going to do, how the serge protector works and it does not cover telephone and cable....and we were fine with that. The installation went quickly, no mess was left behind and we were given the paperwork on the product used for the installation and we were done.

Company electricians were on time and very professional. The receipt that I received from Angie's List did not have the details of the Big Deal, so I could not confirm that I had purchased diagnostic AND repair. After calling the manager to confirm Angie's List Big Deal services that were purchased, they fixed the 2 electrical circuits that did not work. After the whole house diagnostic, the electricians wrote up a quote with several options, all of which were quoted at several thousand dollars. I decided to do some research into the quote before I invested so much money. After consulting a friend of the family who works for a power company, I realized that Universal Home Experts was trying to sell me a lot of services that I did not need, essentially "up-selling" to someone that they felt that they could take advantage of - a young, single woman. They did not count on me also being a scientist who likes to do her research! I will not use this provider again; I prefer to work with people who are honest and do not try to sell me extras. I want to establish a trusting relationship with a company who will do a good job over and over and not suggest services that I do not need. That is how a company should treat their customers.

I want to thank this member for her purchase of Angie’s List Big Deal Diagnostic. This coupon includes a diagnostic to find the problem and a basic repair. We repaired the connections in a recessed light, replaced a light switch and replace a gfci; all were all included with the purchase of the coupon. I also want to defend the 60% of our thousands of happy customers who are college educated women, many of whom are Angie’s List Members, have written Page of Happiness reviews for my company and appreciate when a company educates them about their whole system. Our mission is to provide permanent repair solutions through transparency and education. We will not change our mission because some says we are just “up selling”, because the alternative of not finding a serious hazard is too appalling to consider. In an effort to be truly honest about our recommendations, let us look at what her scientific inquiry with an employee of a power company revealed: Namely that the following list of recommendations were useless: Smoke detectors: if your home catches on fire while you are asleep, everyone in your home will be awakened at the first sign of smoke. Now required in all homes built. She needed (4) Surge Protection: With over 16million lighting strikes recorded by the National Weather Service for Harris county in the last 10 years, you won’t have to replace your brand new wall mounted double oven Circuit restoration: When we start to see problems with circuits like in this member's home, we also start to see repeated instances. The best choice is to take the circuit apart and put it together right. We sometime find hidden safety hazards and we also provide a 5 year warranty for the circuit. Install a new junction box in the attic: You know that electronic ignition that sparks the gas for your gas cooktop. An open slice in your attic can act the same way, right over your insulation or wood framing. We are the good guys. We have thousands of customers with whom we have trusting relationships with who have spent thousands of dollars on major repairs to their home. We also have thousands of customers who have homes that were built well to begin with and have had no major issues except needing a new ceiling fan. When we come to your home, we are happy to make minor repairs to solve your initial problem. But we will also inform you of any repair issues or safety hazards that we find.

Dennis and Scott did an outstanding job. It took most of the day, but they had a plan before they arrived and they worked very quickly and methodically. Dennis explained to me what he was going to do and then they went to work. They had everything they needed to do the job and they were completely committed to getting it done as quickly as possible. I had a laundry list of things to be done and it could easily have confused less organized and dedicated individuals, but they worked their plan and asked me about questionable items and got it done in a very professional manner. Some of the work was outdoors and they used shoe covers every time they came back into my house. They were also very careful to keep the doors closed so that my cats did not escape. They used drop cloths and were very careful with their tools and then cleaned up everything when they left.
Description of Work: Performed whole-house electrical inspection, installed 9 GFCI outlets, 3 outdoor waterproof covers, disconnected and removed one floodlight with conduit, labeled my existing electrical panel, installed disconnect switches on water heater and older A/C air handler, replaced one faulty indoor outlet and installed whole-house surge protector.

Ricky thoroughly inspected the heating system in the attic. During the inspection, Ricky spotted a water leak and immediately made me aware of it. Ricky took pictures of the heating system and of the water leak. Ricky explains what was working right and what needed repair. Ricky worked to coordinate the plumbing repair with the pan replacement required for the heater. Ricky and the plumber worked together to make sure the leak was not a/c or heater related. Ricky is very professional and very pleasant to work with. I look forward to seeing him for the summer a/c servicing.
