electrician, home inspection
  + 0 more
We recently purchased our 1962 home and I wanted to get an electrical inspection to find out whether there were any existing problems we needed to be aware of and if so, get an estimate for repairs. I also wanted to discuss the possibility of moving or burying electrical line that drapes over our backyard to the house and get a estimate for that as well. Two technicians (or technician and salesman - I don't know) showed up promptly for our appointment. Uniformed, well spoken, and professional. Explained what they were going to check, I also commented on some things that came up in our inspection report that I wanted them to look at and give me a bid for repair. I am writing this review long after the fact so I dont remember how long for the inspection. Probably 30 or 45 minutes. Most of the time after that was spent going over their findings and the bid to repair all the items listed or talking to me about their service contracts (discussed later). They checked the panel, few of the outlets, the attic area where the wiring is located. I did have questions concerning the age of the home's electric and wanted to know whether we would be looking at having to replace or upgrade electric at some point in the future. This is the first older home we have purchased and it has been remodeled but didn't know the extent of electrical replacement or upgrade. Results were conveyed to me by what appeared to be the lead tech or salesman? I say salesman because that is what it ended up feeling like to me. He went over the list of items they felt should be addressed in order of importance. Quite a few items on the list, including a price for burying the electrical cable so it no longer hangs over the yard. Some of the items had different options to select in level of repair, with different prices. So I guess you could fix it a little bit or you could fix it a lot. He did his best explaining what was wrong and why it should be repaired -- I don' t speak electrical, don't know anything but how to hook up a light fixture, so it's my fault if I had a hard time understanding what the problems were and why and how it should be repaired. Bottom line it all comes down to trust -- when you are dealing with something you can never hope to understand, you just have to have confidence in the technician, that what he is telling you is wrong is wrong and needs repair, that his recommendation on the best repair option to select is right, and that the quality of their work is good and it will be repaired correctly and priced fairly. That's putting a lot of faith in that very young man seated across from me. Particularly when there were some very large ticket items listed on that estimate. Guess what I didn't like about the experience was the feeling I got that they were trying to sell me something. When he started pushing the annual service contract that is when I really began to lose interest. I hadn't even signed up for any electrical work and they were already asking if I wanted to pay to have an annual service contract with them. Sure that young man was just trying to earn his commission or bonus. It was this feeling that didn't inspire a lot of faith in the opinions/conclusions of the tech. So decided to wait and get a second and maybe a third inspection of my electric system before deciding to do anything at all. This company has very good reviews on Angie's for their electrical work and knowledge, I can't speak to that. I have also seen comments that state many felt they were overpriced. I can attest to that, I felt the same way. Angie's asked for my review and all I can really attest to is that I would prefer an electrician, that is licensed and well thought of, that comes to my home without a notebook of printed forms, who just personally inspects my electrical set up or problem, then gives me a layman language explanation with a simple estimate of the cost to repair using the best method to completely repair the problem. Only reason I gave the C on quality is I felt they only did a fair job of doing this. The price for the inspection was excellent but maybe not for their services if I were to hire them -- I dont' know.
Description of Work: Purchased Angie's Deal for Electrical Inspection. They performed a 30 -45 minute inspection of my electric system in my older home and spent a good hour or more going over their findings, identifying issues and giving estimates for repair as well as trying to interest me in purchase of a service contract.

Response from Universal Home Experts
I would like to thank this member for purchasing Angie’s List Big Deal Electrical Inspection for $74. As you can see we take that very seriously. Two technicians, in fact two Journeyman Electricians, not one salesman and one technician, went to this member’s home and spent a lot of time examining her electrical system. The two electricians actually spent 3.5 hours. That’s a total of 7 hours for $74. We charged her $10 an hour for two men who have spent their entire working lives perfecting the electrical craft. We sent two electricians to her home, not to sell her something, but because what we do is so unique and ahead of any other electrical company that performs residential service, electricians that may have 20 years experience, still need over 6 months of training to be able to understand what it is we do. I am sorry we could not help this member understand her electrical system. Our mission is to provide permanent repair options through education and transparency. Spending time explaining something like repairs to your electrical system may appear to be selling. But we want to be clear to the homeowner about what is going on and what will happen and that is a chance I will take. This member had already requested that we look into one of the largest investments you can make in your electrical system: moving an underground main service line for her pool. There are many electrical companies out there who will fix and go or not spend time explain what is exactly going to happen even predicting the future. And they are cheaper than we are. And that cheap price invariably leads to undesired surprises. There is not enough money in their bid to even pause a moment to explain to the customer what they are doing to your home. They just show up, ignore you and start working. I would rather be accused of trying to sell something to someone than have a customer who does not fully understand what we are going to do to the most dangerous system in their most expensive investment, their home. This member has an older home built in 1962. The National Electric Code has been updated 16 times since this home was built. Please do not allow fix and go electricians to convince you that because it was code when it was install 50 years ago and is “grandfathered” it is safe. The safety features of your electrical system have evolved more in the last 40 years than over 100 years since Edison first lit up streetlights. IF a fix and go electrician tells you it is “grandfathered” they are willing to bet the safety of your family on their indulgence of their laziness and desire not to do any work, I am not sure why they even drove to your house after you called them, if they are not going to address serious safety hazards that are now a part of the code and if they failed to include them in a new job, the electricians would be fined and may lose their license. You have chosen to buy and enjoy an older home; you should also enjoy it with a safe electrical system.

While expensive, they only work to code, provide prompt service and take no shortcuts. The began immediately and completed all work in the time specified and for the agreed to price. All work performed was and remains excellent. They even followed up with several calls to insure we were satisfied with their performance. I little pricey but, you get more than you pay for. A good value.

Cut hole in wall and installed new circuit breaker box. Added plugs for generator to use during power outage. Added a new circuit into the work area of our garage. The young men were hard workers, polite and well trained. Arrived on time and left no mess. Just expensive.
Description of Work: Purchased a 'deal' that ended up could not use. They suggested we change out our entire electrical box plus update our wiring. Ended up doing excellent work but was very expensive. Have had them come out one more time because one of the upgrades shorted out - were very polite and courteous and corrected the problem at no additional charge. Good company, excellent work just a little expensive for our pocket book.

They came out, did the job, and everything was good. They were very professional as far as cleaning up and telling me what they were doing. I told them what I needed, so they looked at it and gave me some ideas for the future. They were very prompt and did a very good job. Their price was fair, reasonable, and right in line with everybody else.
Description of Work: I had some electrical work done by Universal Wiring two or three years ago, but they have recently changed their name to Universal Home Experts. They increased the electrical panel, replaced the breakers, and just kind of cleaned up some stuff.

Two truck arrived right on time on the scheduled day. Yovani advised me of the work they would be doing and gave me notice before cutting off the power. The work was done quickly and professionally. The house, yard and garage were left as clean as when they had arrived. I walked through with them at the completion of the job to test everything and see how it worked.
Description of Work: While redoing our attic insulation the workmens equipment kept tripping the breakers when using the outdoor sockets. David of Universal Home Experts inspected the entire electrical system. The immediate issue was the voltage drop across the GFI circut but other items while not as pressing also needed attention. The house was built in 1989 and the neutrals on the panel were double plugged and needed to be separated and the meter base was pulling away from the meter. We also wanted to replace a bathroom vent fan, add a dimmer switch in the kitchen and make a more permanent installation of string lights around our patio. David gave us an estimate for 5 options ranging form everything to just the minimum. We chose to do it all which was replace the electrical panel and meter base, grounding system, add surge protection, GFI circut restoration, install bath exhast fan, hang string lights and install outdoor receptical and tie into switch and the kitchen dimmer switch. Yovani adivised me of all the work that was going to be done and how long I would be without power. All of the work was done quickly and professionally. The house and garage area were left just as clean as when they arrived. The patio lights look fabulous. I would use Universal Home Experts again.

Description of Work: Sent an email to company, called back immediately. Could send someone out to give me a quote the next day. Gentleman on phone was very nice and helpful. I have no faith in this contractor. Be very careful with any overpriced estimate they give you.
Description of Work: This company was a complete rip off. Not even going to waste my time to tell you all about it and even if I did you can see in their other reviews they come up with some poor excuse and Angie's List does nothing to verify their claims. Not happy with this contractor or Angie's List either.

Angies List. Please be aware that this is the THIRD time this member has libeled us on your site. How many times does a member get to say the same thing. The deceptive part of this review is that this member is a landlord. So the bid he is refering to was for a home he does not live in. We do not advertise to work for anyone but homeowers. I have found that when someone is this venemous it is usually because he loved the tech and is mad that we are not as cheap as his usual unlicensed, grumpy, alcohlic handyman who does his electrical and painting work for him but could not find.

The office was responsive and arranged for Larry (my usual electrician) to provide an estimate. The estimate was fair and reasonable, so I scheduled the appointment. Larry picked up some of the fixtures and installed the rest, which I had at my home, with the help of Gilberto. They completed the whole job within one day and, overall, did very nice work.

The job went very well. Richard was good to work with. Plain spoken, direct, honest, no fooling around. It has been over a year since the work was done and we have had no problems with any of the completed work.
Description of Work: We needed some minor electrical work done in our house. Called Universal, they came out and Richard said he could not do anything because our electrical box was not up to code. So we hired them to put in a new electrical box, bringing it up to code and repairing the electrical work inside the house. We also wanted outside lights installed. So hired them to do the outside lights. They installed excellent quality exterior yard lights guaranteed for 10 years, which lights up the exterior beautifully. They are on timer and I never have to worry about the exterior being well lit.

Yovani was the service specialist that took our call. We had a very small electrical fire in the outlet of our laundry room. He was prompt and professional, arriving at the time the call center promised. He even took extra care to cover his shoes when entering our home. Yovani was deligent as he investigated the cause of our outlet fire. He then explained various solutions to fix the problem, including prices. He completed the work quickly the same day. He was very easy to work with and communicate with. The call center followed up to ask about our experience. Overall I was impressed with the quick and professional service we recieved, and would call Universal Home Experts again!

I am happy with the repairs. The complete story appears above.
Description of Work: I moved my TV to a different wall and plugged it in. A giant spark jumped out of the socket and killed the TV (no harm to me) and a diagnostic program on a back-up battery I had told me there was a wiring fault. I called Universal Wiring and they responded promptly, gave me an estimate, etc. I OKd the repair, but their original assessment of the problem did not fix it. They did further investigation and determined that there was a short in the wiring of the circuit which was causing a reverse polarity situation. They gave an estimate to re-wire the circuit, which required working in the attic as well as inside the house. I initially declined the repair, but after thinking it over I called them back and OK'd the repair. They returned promptly, rewired the circuit and declared the repair a success. I plugged the back-up battery in at the offending socket while they were still here and it no longer showed a wiring fault. I had the TV repaired and everything is working fine. The electricians were courteous and professional. They cleaned up their mess and went away. I have a working knowledge of electrical repairs, and I understand why their original assessment of the problem was wrong and why it did not work. So I do not fault them for their wrong original diagnosis. If I have another electrical problem I would not hesitate to call Universal Wiring (now called Universal Home Services) again.

Lee was friendly but very professional. He made sure I understood everything and showed me the deteriorated a/c parts and told me their functions. He was punctual and used his time efficiently.
Description of Work: First there was a maintenance checkup at no charge because I had a prepaid plan. Then Lee showed me how various parts had deteriorated, the refrigerant was low and needed refilling, and an access panel needed to be added to the evaporator unit because it was closed and had never been inspected. So he spent 3 extra hours with the add-on job.
