We were looking to increasing the amperage in one room. The estimate seemed quite high and it was going to completed so we found another solution. There were no additional fees. They were prompt and did the inspection.

I’m pleased with the surge protection. I think it’s the same thing as the hardware store and I think the $175 is probably the price of it normally so it’s not that great of a deal financially. As far as the safety inspection goes, he tried to sell me stuff that was not required by code. The inspection was fairly priced but I think he expected to make enough by selling stuff I didn’t need.

Thanks for purchasing the Angie's List Big Deal for Surge Protection. We have installed hundreds of surge protectors. I am also glad that with the 1.6 million lightning strikes we get in the Houston area each year, your new surge protector has been protecting your appliances and electronics. I apologize that you thought the technician was trying to charge you more money. The wide variety of breaker panels requires us to determine the installation on a case by case basis. The big deal was clear that it did not include the breaker required to install it, but to make it easier we discounted the breaker by 35%. But to make sure you were proteced he provide and installed the breaker for free.

It turned out to be a sales call rather than a service call. Had several other electricians out and all agreed panel box, etc were fine. Universal suggested new everything to assure safety (there usual response to any master electrician that disagrees with their findings) was also informed cost Universal quoted was twice what is should be, felt is was more of a bait and switch sales call. I even checked with the office before getting the "big deal: on Angie's List to make sure it was appropriate for me. Told them that I also had two things that needed repairing and they did not come prepared to do either.

This customer lives in a home built in 1955. It has NEVER been updated. She calls us because the FIRE Dept told her to call an electrician after she called the FIRE dept because her dryer outlet was smoking (where there is smoke, there is .....). We came out promptly on her schedule. We will not repair dangerous. Yes it seems like a sales job because everything that was installed in 1955 is no longer acceptible and the job of electricians is to make safe or replace out of date electrical systems of the past. So the hero of the day is person claiming to be a master electrician who is willing to make a repair to something that we consider dangerous. OK do not call us if you want to make a cheap repair. Please call us if you need us to fix your cheap repair or if you love your home and want to make sure that you electrical system is safe. Please beware of lazy electricans who just want to fix and go in the name of being reasonable. They all have a duty to perform and that is the safety of your electrical system. In fact that is the first article in the National Electric code which is published by the National FIRE Protection Agency: "The purpose of this code is the practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity."

All I can do is to apologize to this member. He called us for an inspection on a home that was due the next day. We appreciate the lost time and his expectations. Every call we went to that day prior to his requested time had a major problem that required us to stay on site to make the repair. That is not a good excuse for this member. But I want to be clear about the service we provide. When we come to your home, we stay until the job is done. Even at the risk of the next customer becoming angry with us and giving us a bad reveiw for not working for them. When we come to your home, we are not planning to stay all day, so we schedule a few calls each day for our electricians. We are very selective about who we hire to come to your home. Since we have thousands of customers who use us and refer us on a regular basis, we are always a little short handed. We stand by our commitment to you that the electrician who comes to your home is the best in town.

I was very dissatisfied with that. They came in and they just walk around and say things, but they don't ask what would it take to do this and I don't know we have to give you a bid for that and that is going to be a separate process so you charge me to come over here and walk around and look at stuff. I guess I probably should have read it more carefully, but I don't think it was helpful at all. They are just here to sell you other things that is all he was here to do. I am very disappointed with it. They are very lousy. I would not use them again.

I am sorry you think we are lousy and the Angies List Big Deal for an Electrical System Inspection for $74 was not clear enough. A licensed electrician spent a little over 2 hours conducting an inspection of your home and found some repair issues for your electrical system. We left you with a report and an estimate to make the repairs. When we called you immediately after your service appoinment you said: "very satisfied with Ross, he was spectacular". Had we known of your dissatisfaction at the time of service we would have offered you a refund since we have a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee, which would have included our Angies"s List Big Deal $74 Electrical System Inspection not being clear about what it provides.

Upon seeing the good reviews for this company, we decided to give them a call when our A/C went out this evening. The gentleman that answered the phone said that their employee on call "would not answer". I guess their idea of emergency service is a bit different than mine. We would not have called at 9:00 if it had not been an emergency. Please do not list 24 hr emergency service as one of your services if you have no desire to perform. Bottom line? DO NOT CALL THIS COMPANY IF YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY. They may do wonderful work, but I would not know. I will not be calling them again.

I purchased the big deal from Angie's List. They came out and did the inspection. Then I bought additional services from them and got that scheduled. They came out and performed the services. I had a little problem with the door bell and it did not work after they left. I asked the guy to come back and they said I have to reschedule. I had asked them to please come back out if it's possible and I ended up having to talk to a supervisor about it. He said they'll get it scheduled and I think before they were due to come out the second time, it worked. They scheduled it but he never did have to come back out, so it might have been something on my end but I didn't know that at the time. They did perform the work and completed everything I needed done. I was a little drawn back that the guy who I asked said he was on his way to the next customer and asked me to call the office. I thought they were pretty responsive. The young man that came out initially did a great job. He was very attentive. The quality of work was good and the first guy that came out did good but it was just that one hiccup.

I initially called Universal using an A/C Tune-Up deal on Angie's List. I was so impressed that I have contracted them to be my regular provider and have also used them for electrical check-ups on my home. Everyone I have dealt with from the office and in my home has been professional, courteous and prompt. The prices are reasonable for the level of service that they provide. And they are great at reminding me that it is time to check my units again so I'm ready for winter or a grueling hot summer!

After two nights of sub-par A/C performance and some investigation, I determined that my A/C line and condenser coils were frozen. I called Universal Saturday morning around 7 am, and was able to schedule a visit with the tech on call for about an hour later. He arrived within the time discussed, efficiently assessed my problem, provided options, pricing estimates, and a recommended course of action. I decided to add freon as a temporary solution, and get quotes to resolve the apparent cause of my leak. The technician, Joe, was friendly and helpful, and answered all of my questions gleaned from searching the internet trying to identify the problem and potential causes. Upon Joe's departure, the main office called to follow-up, making sure that my appointment went well. Though this repair was unplanned, I do have plans for a few other projects, and plan to engage Universal for quotes to get that work completed. Overall, great experience, particularly since they were able to get in and out before my wife was even awake on a weekend morning. UPDATE: Subsequent to the initial experience, it was discovered that the condenser was defective. Although I didn't purchase the system from Universal, they got all of the warranty information necessary for a replacement, and completed the replacement at a fair price. I also decided to engage Universal to for additional upgrades to my existing HVAC system, plumbing, ductwoork, and insulation. I have since signed a service agreement which includes annual checkups, discounts on services, and priority scheduling. In all of my interactions with Universal their service team members are always polite and efficient, and theirs is the first number that I call for my HVAC needs.

I want to thank this member for giving us an opportunity to make his electrical repair. Because our mission is to provide permanent repair solutions through education and honesty, I also want to apologize for his electrician misinforming him. Our overhead is not higher than other companies; neither is our profit margin. All dedicated home service electrical companies operating in the Houston area have the exact same overhead. What is happening is that many companies choose to not pay for things that make for a professional service business. This could include health insurance for their employees so that they make sure to attract the best craftsman in the area. It could include the investment in trucks and inventory so that not only will your technician’s truck not break down in route to your home, the technician will have the part he needs to make a small repair happen in an hour instead of having to go to a hardware store and drag your simple job out for hours. It could also not include proper licensing and training of technicians, liability and workers compensations insurance so that if something is damaged or a technician is injured at your home, you are not paying for it out of your pocket; because as the property owner, you are liable if the company working on your home is not insured. I am sure that you will agree that it is not profit that many companies choose to eliminate to lower their price. The idea that someone could be half is dangerously absurd as the cost associated with most of our jobs is close to half. So that means that not only is the other company choosing not to have overhead to provide better service and security for you, it means the might not be making enough money to cover any overhead at all! How long are they going to be able to stay in business to provide a warranty for the work they install in your home? If I could lower my overhead to provide a lower price to my customers, I would. But I choose to invest in the overhead it takes to provide the best service and the best security and guarantees to my customers. If you want a company that has been in business for 21 years and will be for another 21 years, who can guarantee your satisfaction for years to come, the we are the right business for you to call.

I want to thank this member for allowing us to complete an Angie's List Bid Deal Spring check for his 2 AC systems. According to our records, we did make a $300 repair to the low voltage control system for one of his ac systems. I see no record of looking at his disposal, especially as we were not perfoming plumbing repairs at that time as we do now. Since this may be a case of mistaken identity, I hope his experience with us performing a system check on his ac earned more than a C.

Thank you for the kind words about our company and the opportunity to repair your ac system. One of the most important parts of our business is the trust our customers have with all members of our team. All of the members of our install team, the advance workers party, are registered with State of Texas Ac licensing board and are supervised on every job by the Installation manager. Replacing ac equipment is a dirty job but even so, I apologize for the lack of uniform on the installers and the trucks. Since it is high summer, we have to resort to using temporary vehicles to supplement our installation trucks to keep up with the amount of work.

New dryer was flipping breaker. I called and told them I had a Federal Pacific breaker box that needed a new breaker. They came out, spent ah hour looking over the exterior wiring and gave me a quote of $13,182 to change out and move panel, meter can, electrical riser, etc. Then they told me that my house probably had old style wiring and that I would not be able to sell the house without rewiring it which would be about $30,000. I said it only needs a new breaker. They said that they did not service Federal Pacific systems. I told them good-by. They should have told me when I first called that they did not service the equipment that I had. I called a friend, a semi-retired electrician, who came out and fixed it for $140 which included replacing my doorbell too.

I want to thank this member for allowing us to try to service her electrical system. I understand the anguish and amazement about how much work needed to be done to her 83 year old home. Here is the scary part... the FPE she refers to was a replaced panel about 40 years ago. Our job as electricians is to educate our customers about their electrical system. Period. She probably loves the old neighborhood she lives in. Yep, all of her neighbors are in exactly the same boat. 80% of the safety features of a modern electrical system have been developed in the last 40 years. Her home was built 4o years before that. In a 1930's home, there is not one component of the original electrical system that can be saved. The FPE panel she refers to has a proven track record of failing to function at the most crucial time, when the electrical wiring is shorting out. Don't listen to me, GOOGLE: FPE. Many house fires have occurred because the FPE breaker did not turn off and stop the flow of electricity to the arcing part of the system and ignited the house. Apparently her semi retired firebug, retired over 30 years ago because this has been an industry wide knowledge since 1982 when the company itself pulled its own product off the market because of failed testing. Please, please please Angies List members. If you believe that an electrical repair is only correct if it is cheap, please don't call us so you can give us a bogus review about how we want to sell you something that will save your life. But if you live in an older home and love it and the old neighborhood you live and want to invest in the safety and quality of your life, then we are the company to call. We won’t lie to you so we can get a little sale. We will tell you the truth, even if it means we lose the sale, because the truth about your safety is more important than a sale. But please don't run into the arms of an unlicensed firebug that claims to have a cheap band aid.
