It went exceptionally well. Not only did the electrician they sent out repair the problem, he also took the time to explain exactly what had caused the problem in terms I (not an electrician) could readily understand. He also checked our circuit breakers to confirm that all were working fine and asked if I had any questions. What impressed me, in addition to his detailed assessment of our problem and explanations, was that he did not try to sell me any services that we did not need, cleaned up after the work was done and was prompt, courteous, and extremely professional. I was alone in the house at the time service was provided and it is important to me to feel comfortable with a service provider who is coming and going from my home. I did initially contact this company as a result of an Angie's List Deal, but we will not hesitate to contact this company again, the next time we need any electrical repair.

Great! Sam S. made sure the Ring doorbell worked and then had me use the Ring App on my phone so I would know how to go through the steps. While at the electrical panel, he noted some areas of safety concerns due to the age of the house and new inspection standards. Sam was very professional and I appreciated the low to high range of price increments quoted to resolve electrical problems depending on our budget. It was greatly appreciated that Sam did not attempt to pressure me. On a scale from 1-10 with 10 being the highest, I would rate Sam S. a 10+!

Anthony was punctual and professional along with being congenial. All debris was disposed of and the work areas had been cleaned up prior to Anthony leaving our home. We were satisfied with the process. We purchased the Angie's List promotion $59 for $249 credit towards service. Final cost after taking the credit was $446.00

Sam was professional and personable, but I can't believe how ovepriced the quote he gave me was. It really undermines all the friendliness when I discovered how much I was being gouged. Another reputable electrician came the next day and provided a quote that was less than 1/5 of the quote from Sam at Universal Home Experts.
Description of Work: Half the lights in my house weren't working including my HVAC. Universal sent out first and HVAC tech and then an Electrician to assess the situation and diagnose the problem. Both the techs were very friendly, professional and courteous. The electrician correctly diagnosed the problem as a partial failure of my underground electrical service line, and then gave me the estimate. His estimate was $640 just to oversee Centerpoint checking the meter and transformer. His estimate to do the minimum to get my lights working again was $8100.

Thank you for allowing us to come to your home. I am glad you had someone to make your repair. I am glad that you thought your technician was friendly, professional and courteous. I am not sure about your experience with the other company but that is exactly what our business focus is. Our customers want expert polite technicians who communicate. That is who we hire and what we train on almost 300 hours per year. Those guys also want to be paid well which is why we pay the highest wages and have the best benefits for an electrician in town. Our technicians are not just one in on hundred they are literally one in a thousand. I know I have counted. I am not sure how another company can get by with just charging you for parts and a few extra dollars. As for our prices, if I could lower our price and still have a premier company I would. But our customers want us to arrive quickly in fully stocked trucks ready to start immediately. Our customers want awesome polite techs who are background checked, drug free, covered by expensive workers comp insurance that protects homeowners from liability if the worker is injured on your property. Newer model trucks that don't break down in route to your appointment, computers to keep track of your work history, super nice customer service reps to answer your phone when you needs able to set your appointment on the first call. So Many things make up a professional service company. Thank you for giving us a try.

Great! They were able to send out a plumber the same day I called. Stephen M. R. came out to our home that afternoon, assessed the situation, and gave me a quote. We decided to move forward. Since he didn't have the part needed, we scheduled the work for the following morning. The office called me both times to let me know he was on his way to my house, and they also called after the work was completed to ask how it went. Stephen was professional yet friendly, and he explained everything he completed. Our only complaint - the price is a bit high. However, we did get a 90 day warranty on work completed and the work was completed within 24 hours of my initial call.

Sam was very knowledgeable and found the issue quickly to be not a breaker at all but a blown dimmer switch. He replaced it and removed the broken light bulb from the Halo recessed lighting fixture that had shorted, causing the dimmer to fail. He was also able to identify the control for the exhaust fan which was not where I expected it to be, that the control was getting power, and that the fan itself needed to be checked, which I indicated I would do. He also identified that there was wiring behind a cover plate where I wanted a duplex outlet, but that the wiring was not hot. He is also a great communicator. All in all, I was very pleased with Sam's abilities, thoroughness, and professionalism. He presented my options and pricing before he started and there were no surprises. What was not good was the very heavy upsell. He presented 5 options for me. Options 1 and 2 included replacing my breaker panels which are old and could definitely benefit from updating even though they had no signs of problems and comply the code. Like I said, this is an old house and I may actually take his advice on this upgrade at some point, but only when there is an issue that involves the breaker boxes. That is not what was going on when I had him out but I appreciate the insight and recommendation. What is troubling is that the top four of the five of the "options" presented included replacing from 2 to all 6 of the light fixtures with new wiring. Note that these were presented as options, not recommendations. He did not say that they were defective, or that the wiring was defective, nor did he imply that anything was wrong with them. And there was not. There was a easily identifiable root cause of the problem and an inexpensive fix and he did that work very well. Ask specifically what it the lowest cost option that will fix the problem you have and do it safely and with reasonable assurance that the issue won't come back. I paid just over $500 for about 2 1/2 hours of his time, much of which was spent writing up the page of "options." I did get very good expertise and learned a lot about my house and its electrical so the visit did give me value. The "Gold" option presented was over $15,000 and the recessed lighting and wiring showed no indication that they needed replacing. I do not fault Sam for these sales tactics as he was clearly doing exactly as he was trained. TL:DR: The quality of their work is excellent and value is good, but if you are easily swayed by feelings of fear, uncertainty, and doubt when working with service companies I would keep looking. You could easily spend a lot more than necessary working with these guys.
Description of Work: I had a blown breaker or GFCI that I could not locate. Also in a old house with many renovations and upgrades I had a bad floor outlet and an exhaust fan that would not work. My main desire was to figure out how the house was wired and where the breaker was.

Thank you for allowing us to make your repair. Our technicians are the primary focus of our company because we want quality repairs and value for our customers. There are thousands of electricians in Houston and I would not allow 95% in my home. We look for the 5% and constantly train them. Part of that training is exploring the entire system and providing options for the customer to choose. We are perfectly happy making a basic repair. But with the poor quality of work rampant in the new construction industry dating back as far as the 1940's (Think postwar building boom and what it did to craftsmanship), we cannot walk away from a home without notifying our customer what issues we noticed while investigating the issue. An interesting fact is that most breaker panels are only guaranteed for one year. That means if you have a 25 year old breaker panel, it is 24 years out of warranty. Breakers are only guaranteed by the manufacturer to trip as intended one time. As an electrician who comes across an older panel, I cannot, in good faith, tell my customer that their breakers will function as intended. The fact is that breakers only do one thing and that is turn off. If the wiring has a fault or a short and does not trip the breaker the consequence could be catastrophic. A breaker that has never tripped does not mean it works, it just means it has never tripped. They are plastic with basic mechanism inside. If your panel is outside, then the it is probable that the internal mechanisms are corroded. Electrical systems are different from other systems in your home. With most systems, if there is a problem, they are visible or it doesn't work. With Electrical systems, the features electricians work on are the safety features. Often, an electrical system is working, but the safety features are missing (out of code) are not working ( poor initial workmanship or deterioration). It is important for electricians to not only fix and then go but they must look into the possibility that there are comprised safety features because the possibility is too catastrophic to overlook. You can keep looking but we have done the looking for you and employ the best electricians in town.

Did not execute contract proposal with this company as I felt that it "upsold" too many electrical repairs on the basis of fear. Now, with that said, this older house does have a fair amount of problems that do need to be fixed. I understand the premise of increasingly expensive "options" being presented in bid form, but sometimes the homeowner cannot choose between these and actual needed repairs after the sales "sell." Glad we got a second opinion from another Angie's list provider. The representative was extremely polite, communicative, and did come out quickly, but the even the base proposal price was completely unaffordable.

Because of continually pushing back the arrival time and the weekend fast approaching, I ended up doing the major part of the work myself which was finding and uncovering the leak. When they finally arrived I had already exposed the broken connection having excavated a big hole myself. They ended up joining together a PVC pipe and a metal pipe which took them about 5 minutes. They then backfilled the hole with the dirt I had shoveled out. All together they were at my house about 1 hour but insisted I pay the full 'flat rate' charge of $800!!! They refused to lift a finger until I agree to pay. It was like being held a gunpoint. I argued that I had already done the hard part of the work but the plumber would not back off the $800. That was $800 to connect two pipes and shovel a cubic yard of dirt into a hole. I then called the office the following Monday and asked them to lower the charge to reflect what they actually had done. The said they would call me back the next day after reviewing the case but, so far, after more than a month. There has been no callback. Details. First it started with not showing up when they said they would. First they were going to come on Thursday. When they finally showed up around 3:30 p.m. the plumber said he was still doing another job and would return at 8:00 a.m. Friday. On Friday morning they called and said there was a delay and they might come at 11:00 a.m. or maybe 2:00 pm. When they did not show up by 2:00 p.m. and there was no call with a new time, I started to dig up the pipe myself to find the leak. After a couple hours of digging in messy mud, I found the leak: the metal pipe from the house was leaking at the connection with the PVC pipe to the water meter. They finally showing up at 4:00 p.m. All that was left to do was join two pipes and refill the hole, about a 30 minute job. The hard part, finding the leak, was done by me. I asked the plumber to give me a price considering I had already done most of the work. He stated that he must charge the standard flat rate of $800! I argued that did not apply because I had already completed most of the work. I should have told him to go away but it was already past 5:00 p.m. on Friday and a guest was coming to the house at 5:30 p.m. and I did not want to be without water so I finally agreed to the charge. On Monday, I have tried to call them since then to request they reduce the cost but they didn't answer the phone and there is not voice mail...it just rang and rang without stopping. Also I sent them an email asking them to call and discuss the charges and, so far, they did not respond. Finally someone answered the phone days later. I explained my case and asked them to reduce the charges and refund the money based on the work they had actually done. The gentleman on the phone said they would review the case and get back to me the next day. That was a month ago and I have received no call back and no refund.
Description of Work: Needed to find a leaking pipe between the water meter and my house. The soil near the house was wet and water was running down the driveway into the street.

I purchased services from Universal Home Experts on January 5, 2017. We agree on the service to be provided the morning of January 9. They called a little after noon on January 9 and said they couldn't come until Thursday, January 12, at the earliest because of so many emergency calls due to recent sub-freezing weather. Apparently they are more interested in making full-price plumbing service calls than the discounted Angie's List calls. I highly recommend that nobody use this plumbing provider, as they have proved they are unreliable.
Description of Work: I have a kitchen faucet that has had a small leak for quite some time. Last week the leak got quite a lot larger and we couldn't shut it off. It either needs repair or replacement, and needs it now. Because of the size of the leak, we had to shut off all water to the faucet.

I apologize that you did not experience our premier service. With over 400 "A" rated Angie's List Reviews, we normally do a better job. It doesn't happen often but it did and I apologize that we were not able to meet your schedule expectations. When we called you that day we were unable to reach you. When we are busy, we cannot send a technician to a home without updated confirmation .When we were unable to reach you we had to then reschedule your appointment. That Monday, plumbing was extremely busy and we were unable to take care of any customers except Our maintenance plan customers, which is part of our obligation to them. For any customers who we were currently working for or had a maintenance plan with us, we worked late into the night that particular Monday. As a company we are committed to starting your repair right away and sometimes that means we only have capacity for our customers that we are working for right now and we no longer have capacity to accept new customers. That doesn't happen often but when it does, I apologize that we were not able to meet your schedule expectations.

Overall, the service provided was great. The electrician, Mike Gustafson, was highly professional and very knowledgable. After initially assessing the issue, Mike took time to sit down with me to discuss some options to keep in mind for the future regarding new panel installation, new ground system, and new surge protection. He discussed these options with me and answered all my questions that gave me an understanding as to what each of those options would be providing my family and me with. Mike was not pushy at all about trying to get me to make the decision right then and there, but just wanted to give me the option to keep in mind and to keep Universal Home Experts in mind should I choose to purchase those options in the future. After that, Mike was able to quickly find where the issue was and went to each detector and cut, stripped, and spliced the wiring and ensured that power was being provided. Overall, I was very happy with the service and would definitely use Universal Home Experts again for any future issues.
Description of Work: I had an issue with the wiring for my smoke alarms when trying to install Nest Protect smoke alarms. After I install one, no power was coming to the detector and then I checked all of them and realized that no power was coming to the detectors. I remembered that none of the detectors was displaying the typical green light that hardwired detectors usually show, so I decided to give Universal Home Experts a call to assess the issue.

The installation went great. The technician was very professional and friendly. I would definitely hire again. However, there is an issue that people should be aware of. No surge protector will protect your house from lightning strikes (the add did show a lightning over a house) and according to the technician and the manufacturer, this is not covered under the warranty that is advertised with the product. Since the technician made this clear BEFORE installing the device, I consider this service provider to be of integrity. I did install it to protect my equipment because the price was reasonable but please be aware. If you are installing this to protect against lightning, it will not work.

I purchased the Angie's List deal for the furnace and AC tune-up for $89. I called to make my appointment for a weekday morning and the associate was able to let me know I should have no problem being seen at my appointed time. I got a call that morning to let me know my technician was on the way. Adrian Z. showed up and completed the job within the appointment window and did a thorough check of my furnace and AC system. He was polite, professional and informative. He told me what to look out for regarding performance for both systems and gave me information on the other services Universal provides. I was so impressed I signed up for the annual service agreement. I will definitely be using their services for other work I need done around the house and will be requesting Adrian if he's available.
