The Gutter Man

Purchased a groupon for 1/2 off a gutter cleaning.. They scheduled an appointment time and arrived on time. They provided an estimate of extra charges based on the additional length of gutter over the agreed upon 250 ft. This is where the service went downhill. Several additional charges were quoted, including extra costs for the downspouts, and extra charges to remove covers from gutters . My wife advised there was no need to clean the covered gutter sections as they were not dirty. Their answer for the extra charges was "you should have read the fine print".. Really, there are companies still out there that still say that??? They told her parts of the gutter system could not be cleaned.. I attempted to explain the gutter system was fragmented portions in the front of the house were completely isolated from each other. I spoke to the manager and I advised him if the only isolated sections work in the back portion of the house, then just clean that section. When I got home from work, I looked and found several gutter sections in the front section of the house that were isolated from the rest of the system. They were not cleaned. In addition, the gutter they did clean was not totally cleaned.. To say I was disappointed in the manner that this company conducted itself is an understatement.. They made every attempt to up charge, when I only wanted my gutters cleaned. I will not use a company that offers a service for a set price and then nickels and dimes their way back to their full price service.. And, no company should NEVER tell a customer they should have read the fine print...

It seems fine. My partner was at home at the time.

Went well - I have yet to see it rain so waiting to see how well gutters hold up through a Houston rain storm

I was not pleased that I had to pay an additional $75. It was an Angie's special and they said I did not read the fine print.

Had Jeff out to provide views and estimates on my house. One of the most honest consultations I've experienced - recommended much less work than I expected when I contacted them. Will definitely use them for this and future projects.

Called to say they were running a little late, arrived on time, explained their services and then measured the gutters of the home. I was just outside of the gutter length covered by the coupon so it cost me an additional $0.42 to have all of it cleaned. They offered to disconnect the downspouts so that the drains didn't get blocked for an additional charge but were by no means pushy about it. Good service, friendly people, well explained.

I purchased a Big Deal for gutter cleaning. After exchanging messages via the AL system, I spoke on the phone with a Service Rep. I know our gutters are covered, so specifically asked the Service Rep about them before scheduling; she assured me there was no issue with covered gutters, and made no mention of any increased cost associated with covered gutters. The Gutter Man employees arrived on the date/time scheduled, and measured the linear square footage of our gutters. Based on the Big Deal I was aware that the work was limited to 250 linear feet; the "fine print" for the coupon stated that "all interconnected systems must be cleaned in whole" and that TGM would "provide an estimate of additional charges" prior to initiating work. TGM employees indicated our gutters extended approximately 320 linear feet, and that I would be required to pay an additional $220+ in order for them to do the job - meaning the first 250' was $94, but the last 70' would cost $220+. I told the TGM employee I had expected "additional charges" per the coupon's fine print, but to me $220 extra was completely out of scale compared to the price of the coupon purchased. I sent TGM away. Once they'd gone, I spoke at length with the owner/manager at TGM, expressing my disappointment with the quote and this tactic. His only responses were to refer me repeatedly to the "fine print" of the coupon. Even though I was happy to pay an incremental additional charge, I indicated 3x the value of the coupon was not reasonable. Again, his best/only answer was to tell me to "read the fine print." I offered to compensate his people for the very brief amount of work they'd done, but he stated all refunds were required to be processed through AL. More disturbing, he told me he'd oppose any request for a refund by telling AL his crew "had already done more than 50% of the work" despite having only been on site for 10-15 minutes and not performing any gutter cleaining services. The coupon was for "new customers only," and with the requirement that no partial cleaning be performed, and with the stated "additional costs" being so far out of line as compared to the coupon value itself, I viewed it as simply a bait-and-switch ploy by TGM to get new customers to agree to an entire gutter cleaning without any perspective on how much that cleaning will cost. Others on AL have expressed the same dissatisfaction with TGM upcharges. TGM's reliance on "the fine print" felt more like a "gotcha" than anything, although that (to me) is far more justifiable than the statement that he was prepared to tell AL they'd done more than half the work, when that was clearly a lie. In the end (and despite any reply to this review or other justification from TGM), AL agreed with me that the work was not done and the money was not earned, and I was refunded the entire $94 - kudos as always to AL. This was not a positive experience and I would not personally trust this company, let alone hire them again.

The crew and crew manager were prompt and very professional. My wife and I were very impressed with how courteous and thorough the job was. They explained everything they were going to do and then summarized everything at the end before I paid. They provided pictures of any issues they saw and estimates for the repairs.

Very good post service. Jeff thoroughly explained me my system and it's caveats.

Costed more due to vent pipes but they did a good job. Left many nails from shingel in drive way etc. not to good clean up

This service could not be better than ever. They were on time. They did a very good job cleaning our gutters. The price and service is very good. You cant beat that. I will use them after everyfall every year. THANKS

Dear Folks at Angie's List: My name is James, and my comments are regarding my reasons for requesting a refund for purchase of gutter cleaning service by the Gutter Man. This purchase was arranged by my wife, with my blessings. But when they called me today to schedule, things went rapidly downhill. A lady from The Gutter Man contacted me today 07/07/14 to schedule the service. I had a lot of questions related to methods and costs, so she transferred me to Jeff Lambert. Keep in mind that to me they are total strangers, and their crew (other strangers) are going to be crawling around and on top of my house; so I really want to know with whom I'm about to do business. Sorry to say, that as a result of that one phone conversation it was Mr. Lambert that said he didn't want to do business with me. Well I think that is his right to do so. I guess my questions, comments or manner made him nervous. Below is a copy of their email to my wife subsequent to my conversation with Jeff. "Hi Joyce, Thank you for giving us the opportunity to earn your business, however, we respectfully decline. After our conversation with James and listening to his concerns and demands; We're requesting that you call Angie's List for a refund. Thank you, The Gutter Man Thanks, The Gutter Man" Though I'm not sure what Mr. Lambert means by "demands", I've no wish to discuss it further, especially in a public forum. Everything went well. The team that was sent out was on time and very professional. Not only that they very informative on how to properly maintain my gutters which is good for a new homeowner.

The two workers did and good job.

They did a really nice job! They were very prompt, very professional, and we were overall happy. They also inspected our roof -- which is above and beyond. I think the price was reasonable and I was satisfied with the quality of their work. Now I had just had my windows cleaned and they splashed some on the windows, but again we were overall happy.

The service went okay. I paid additional for them do some minor repairs on the gutters and to add a cap to the roof. The technicians did fine work, but the customer service was a bit difficult to deal with. Their communication skills were not the best. It only took the technicians a few hours to complete the service and they showed up on time.

They did a good job of cleaning up afterward except for our patio area. I had to go out and clean that area myself. Otherwise they did a great job

I called them to see if they service my area and stated that they did, I bought coupon, then I was messaged that they don't service my area. I then called and spoke to same scheduler and she confirmed that the information she gave me was wrong.

They did an excellent job. Were very professional.

The first installation went very well as the install crew did an excellent job installing the new gutters and answering all of my questions. They were professional, prompt and cleaned up after they completed their work. In fact, we had them out a second time, to replace another small section of gutter about two weeks later mostly for aesthetic reasons. I highly recommend them for any gutter work that you may need to have done on your home as they really know what they are doing. We also have placed ourselves on their semi-annual schedule to clean our gutters as the entire gutter system needed a thorough cleaning before they started the initial gutter replacement work.

I bought a deal. We had gutters put on that said they would never need cleaning. These gutters had things growing on them. They hauled all the trash away, washed everything. They replaced a little tube on the downspout and turned another around without charging me. He was professional, explained everything and why he did what he did. It is a one man company. He drove a 100 miles just to get there and did not charge me a trip charge. He did not make a big mess but cleaned it all up. I was really pleased.

They were wonderful. I have nothing but good things to say about them. They came when they were supposed to. Did what they were supposed to. they have reasonable prices. The whole thing was straight up professional. It's wonderful. They were prompt. They were professional. they knew what they were doing. the gentleman who spoke to me was intelligent. They didn't try and pull any nonsense. He was a straight up guy.

I thought the charge would be $96 but after they arrived they told me it would be $150. $150 for about one hour's work.

The appointment went well, the people were courteous. The job was completed quickly and to our satisfaction. But, we were cleaning up debris from the gutter cleaning ourselves for over a week later. They did the job fine, and fixed issues they found, but we had to clean up alot of small debris from the gutter cleaning.

Nathan arrived on time. He introduced himself and told me what he was going to do. He was professional and explained everything to me as far as the service he was providing. It was handled very efficiently from the first contact with the company until the job was completed. He did say he would have someone contact me to give me a quote on the areas he felt needed to be replaced and I have not heard from anyone as of yet. Not concerned about it as I'm not planning on replacing any gutters at this time anyway.
