A drawing showing how to lay the hearth was provided to Jose Reyes. Unfortunately there were a number of issues with the work performed. 1. White mortar was used, but it was mixed with sand that was brownish. So, the mortar did not come out white, and does not match the existing mortar. 2. Mr. Reyes did not use any dimensional control to ensure the bricks were laid using 3/8" mortar joints, and did not ensure they were plumb, square and cut correctly. 3. As a result, some of the mortar joints approach 1" in width, the brick are not square to each other, 22 of the herringbone bricks were laid incorrectly, so the herringbone pattern is broken in those areas. 4. Overall it is one of the sloppier pieces of work I have seen. I have been in the construction business for 39 years. 5. I informed Jose of the issues, and he said when I paid him, I accepted the work. He was not going to correct his mistakes. 6. I told him I will have to have all of his work redone, and he will leave me no recourse except to seek legal remedy. He said go ahead. 7. The $1400 paid to Jose Reyes was a total waste. Plus, I have to pay to have all his work chipped out, and then pay to do it over again.
Description of Work: The scope for Reyes Masonry was an existing brick fireplace: 1. Clean the sheetrock nails, construction adhesive, and sheetrock residue from the brick on an existing fireplace. 2. Find bricks that would match the existing bricks as closely as possible. 3. Cut back the existing firebrick on each side of the firebox. 4. Remove 3 courses of existing brick at the top of the firebox. 5. Install a new soldier row of bricks at the top of the firebox, and soldier row of bricks at each side of the firebox. The soldier row bricks to be set out from the front of the existing fireplace about 1 inch. 6. Lay a new brick hearth approximately 21" deep x 72" wide, with a soldier course around the outside, and herringbone pattern in the middle. 7. Clean any mortar and residue from the brick after installation. 8. Use white mortar to match the existing white mortar. 9. All mortar joint widths are to be 3/8".

Response from Reyes Masonry
First of all, yes the customer did provide a picture of how he wanted the brick layed. I did exactly what he wanted me to do. He even gave his thumb up before the work was finished, indicating the the work is looking very nice. I even had to wait for the customer to pay me the next day because he did not have the funds, either cash or check at the time of the completion of the job. He indicated he was very happy and liked the job. The customer is an archetect and I have been informed that most of time they change their minds when the job is complete and paid for and expect to have it redone, for no extra pay. I have proof that the job was done exactly as he requested in the beginning. But, he decided to change a few things after the fact. I told him, I can re do it again, but it will cost him again. Because the job was done just as he asked and he liked it very much. He changed his mind the next day. I have been in masonry work for more than 45 years. I have never had a customer change his mind, the next day, after the job was done and paid for, and expected to have it re done again for no pay.

Great work and great price. When I first called I setup an appointment with Joe and he never showed up. I'm glad I tried again because Jose re-scheduled with me and he did a great job at a fair price. When calling try talking to Jose because Joe is not very reliable.

When the provider contacted did not answer call professionally. Requested an estimate for the repair of fireplace/chimney to pass home inspection. Wouldn't say what time he would come out, took address and phone and said would come that afternoon/evening and would call first. Never heard anymore from him. I'm surprised to even find this company on Angie's list.

This customer called for an estimate. I asked for her to send me her address. That I will call her when I am on my way. THIS CUSTOMER NEVER TEXTED OR EMAILED ME HER ADDRESS. So, it was believed that she either send it to someone else or either changed her mind. She never contacted me.

Note: Our house is 40 yrs old, one story, brick around the entire house. Called Jose Reyes, owner of REYES MASONRY on 9/2/15 to come out & give us a bid on brick & mortar repair. Set the appointment for Saturday, 9/5/15 at 10;30am. Since my husband works M-F, we both wanted to be home to go over all the repairs needed. No problem at all for Jose to come on a Saturday morning, he arrived right on time! We went all around the house pointing out the spots needing repair. Jose is so professional & experienced, he even pointed out areas that we had missed, but definitely needed to be fixed too. We were grateful for his expertise. Once the discussion was over, he gave us a bid of $1,200. We thought that was a very reasonable bid, so we went ahead & hired him right then. The work date was set for Wed, 9/9/15. Jose said they would arrive between 8:30 - 9:00am. Again he was right on time, arriving at 8:35am. Jose, his son Joe & another worker (didn't catch his name) went right to work. I was the only one home during the work being done, so I went outside several times to check on the progress. Jose didn't seem to mind one bit, he would take me around & show me what they had already finished & then tell me what they still had left to do. After about 4 hours of the guys working, I saw they were starting to put some of the tools back in the truck. I went out to see if they were done. Jose said they were almost done but wanted me to walk all around the house with him to get my approval or in case they may have missed a spot. I was happy to do that so they could fix anything before they put away all their supplies/tools. Only found a few spots in the mortar that needed patching (my husband says I have an Eagle's eye when it comes to things like this). Jose got extra mortar they had left over & patched the spots I pointed out. He was very patient with me. They all worked straight through the time here, no breaks or time out for lunch. I mentioned it was lunch time when I went out to check on them around noon. Jose said they don't take time for lunch as they eat a good breakfast. He said they would rather keep working to finish up the job than to stop for lunch. Not meaning to say they were rushing to finish, just that when they are working, they get their momentum going & don't want to stop. He had already told us the Saturday he bid the job that is was not a full days work for them. To summarize the work done: Repaired all cracks & missing mortar all around the house. Replaced broken bricks with unused extra bricks we had on hand. (when we bought this house, the previous owner had a small stack of leftover brick from when the house was originally built). Also repaired several loose bricks with new mortar. Acid washed all blackened brick around the house & on the chimney. These areas get splashed on from run-off rain from the roof edge. After several years they get black looking & need to be cleaned. Jose prefers to acid wash & hand scrub than using a power washer that will blow or wash the mortar right off. Took a lot of elbow grease, but when finished, the brick looked new again. The top rows of brick on the chimney were black too but not from smoke. They acid washed those & it was unbelievable how clean the chimney looked. And lastly, they recapped the top of the chimney with new mortar. We were very pleased with their efficiency, professionalism, punctuality & courteousness.

Fantastic! From start to finish an incredibly pleasant. Jose arrived on time for quote and to do the work. He even brought the stone to my house the day he picked it up so I could make sure it was the right stone. Could not be more pleased with the workmanship. They left the job site free of debris / scraps. Pricing was very fair (and I am party tough on pricing). Jose returned my calls and texts within minutes. If I could give him an A+ I would. You will not be disappointed if you choose Jose to do your work

I located Reyes Masonry from Angie's List, called him and he came out the next day. Told me what was involved and what the price would be. Started 2 days later. The first day, Jose Reyes and his son Joe, came out and tore down the existing planter, counted bricks, etc. The next day, they came back and rebuilt the planter. They used the old bricks that were still viable and alternated them with new bricks of the same type so that you cannot even tell it has been redone. (it still matches the other brick that is on the front of the house and 2 more planters that had no damage) They were extremely good at their jobs, polite and professional. They cleaned up well afterwards. I felt that the price was on the high side, but also thought they knew what they were doing and yes they did! The results are worth it.

They were punctual and did just about everything we asked. A few things were missed but we asked them to finish before they left. The job was done a little too quickly (some places needed more mortar). We were told we could remove the excess mortar with acid, I felt like those were things they should have done for complete service. They do have great prices. I would use them in the future but i will be sure to ask for a nice clean up job.

Jose and his son were great to work with. They did everything on time as promised (notwithstanding a rain delay!) It was a 2-step process - one day to pour the foundation with rebar, and then the second day to build the brick mailbox. I am very happy with the mailbox, and would definitely recommend them to anyone who needs masonry work done.

Jose and his team (his son and one other man) did a fantastic job on our 35 year old house. There were cracks and broken bricks on all 4 sides. The new bricks are a perfect match and it made the whole house look fresher. They were on time, perfessional, knowledgable, responsive, worked quickly to complete the job in half a day, and we're very easy to communicate with. Jose even showed me a window that my husband needed to caulk. There was a crack inside by the fireplace, and rather than charge us to repair it, he assured us it would be safe to just touch up the paint because it was nothing structural. He also fixed our chimney cap. If I had more brick, I'd use him again!

Mr. Reyes was quick to respond to the voicemail that was left (same evening). He came out the following morning ready to quote and do the work on the spot. He and his assistant worked on the mailbox for approximately three hours. The work was first class! We would definietely refer him to anyone needing quality mortar work at a fair price.
Description of Work: Someone hit the mailbox and we found the damage Saturday morning. Unfortunately, the person who damaged the property did not notify us of the incident. Mr. Reyes came out in response to our mailbox that had been run into by a vehicle's side mirror, gave an estimate and fix the mailbox the same day. He and his assistant had to hollow out he area where the damaged mail box had once been, installed the new mailbox and place mortar around the open spaces.

I called Mr. Reyes on Sunday, September 19th to quote on a mail box replacement. He came by that afternoon and explained in detail what he would have to do, and provided a quote. He started early the next day and was finished by 11:30 am. He did a complete cleanout of all the old mortar surrounding the mail box from the original installation, and then set in a new metal mail box (provided by me), and re-mortared the new box into place. I am extremely pleased with the very professional job Mr. Reyes did for me. He did the work on time, as promised, and did a thorough clean up afterwards. While this is only a small job for Mr. Reyes, be sure that I will recommend him to any friends requiring masonry work. Thanks!

Mr. Reyes arrived at my house at the specific time he told me to look at my job and give me a bid. We agreed to the bid and he and his son arrived the next day and completely demolished the old mailbox. They also installed the concrete pad for the new mailbox let it set and returned the following day to place the mailbox on the concrete pad. They were reasons with price, efficient, responsible, and cleaned up after their work. I plan to use in the near future for other jobs.

Mr Reyes and his son were very punctual, professional and extremely skilled masonry craftsmen. Mr Reyes arrived at appointed times, completed the construction as promised and cleaned the work site leaving no debris, trash, or sign they had ever performed a 2-day construction job. Mr. Reyes was really great. Not only was his price good but he is very nice. He replaced a brick that had fell backwards. We also had cracks in some spots on each side of the house. He matched my mothers bricks perfectly. I understand that this isn't always an easy thing to do. Bricks can vary by the slightest color. If you hire Mr. Reyes you will not be disappointed.
