Furniture Refinishing and Repair, Furniture - Custom Made

About us

We are a small business focusing more on quality restorative services for furniture and wooden decorative arts than on high volume. We aspire to restore antique furniture, for example, using traditional materials and woodworking methods appropriate to the piece rather than using a "one size fits all" approach. (We do modern pieces, too, of course.) It is a very personal approach meant for decorative objects that are special to their owners, trying to bring out the best these things have to offer.

Description of Work: Refinished the surface of table extension to remove a damaged area that was in contact with a plastic bag that was used to store the extension. Apparently, there is something in plastic bag that will react with the finish on a piece of wood and cause the plastic to melt the finish on the wood. | |Good work and very reasonable. The original estimate was approximately $150, but the final cost was $75. Unfortunately, Restorations has moved to the east side of Houston, but he did not have a final location under contract when we picked up the table extension.

They needed to be restored. He came by and picked them up and charged a small fee. He did an incredible job. They are better looking and when they were new over 100+ years ago. They just look fantastic. He called me back and let me know how the process was going. He took his time and did the work on my schedule due to my move. I have used him in the past too and when he repairs things, they always come back with out a mark, scratch or ding! He is a real artist in restoration.

I had him pick up and deliver because the piece was fairly heavy. I don't remember how much of the price was delivery versus repair. I think the job took about two weeks, but he warned me in advance that had a lot of work already scheduled that was committed by Thanksgiving. He was able to finish my piece before Thanksgiving, which I hadn't expected. I'm about to call him for another repair job. Very satisfied.
Description of Work: Don repaired a buffet leg that snapped off. The joinery was rather unusual and Don made sure to everything he could to maintain the structural strength of the leg.

Very poorly. Donald Nichols has no idea how to sell, run a business, or provide customer service.
Description of Work: I found this company on Angie's List (which is usually a good sign); however, when I called Donald Nichols and explained what I wanted done (e.g., furniture repair and reconditioning for 8 dining room chairs) all he did was tell me what he couldn't or wouldn't do. I will never know if he's good at what he does with furniture because he is terrible at running a business. He told me he would not pick up the 8 chairs and I would have to deliver them to him (like I have nothing better to do as a professional than deliver 8 dining room chairs to this "delicate genius"). He told me was wasn't working the rest of the week because it was going to be "cold." He told me has would not re-upholster (ever heard of subcontracting so as to provide the services customers want?) He told me to call him back next week. I made the mistake of calling him once and will never make that mistake again.

Response from RESTORATIONS
I am completely surprised by this report, apparently I did not convey the information I wished to to this member. If I was misunderstood, or if the member was dissatisfied with what I said in our conversation, that was never clear to me. If I can address her concerns: First of all, I do pick up and deliver (not everything however) and am willing to do so, sometimes with no charge if the customer lives close by, otherwise there is a charge for that service. I "suggest" customers deliver and pickup their own furniture only as way to save them these charges. At the time we spoke, I don't recall this customer saying she could not or would not be willing to deliver the items herself, I never told her she would "have to" deliver them herself, I have never said this to anyone. Regarding the cold, the refinishing of furniture is mostly done with good ventilation and the stripping of finishes is done outdoors, cold temperatures do not allow you to even apply new finishes in accordance with the manufacturers instructions, and the week in question has seen nothing but record cold, the upcoming week doesn't look too much warmer, either. I would be very willing to work in the cold, (and, of course, make money,) if I could be sure of the quality of the work. ( I don't know if I conveyed this effectively to this client). Consequently, I have been building a backlog of work while we wait for the weather to be a little more conducive to the refinishing process. I think I told her the process would take a while for these reasons, so I believe I did warn her that the whole affair might take some time, no quick turnaround. She may have seen this as an unwillingness to do the job, but I simply did not want to promise something I could not deliver to her. She is correct, I do not upholster and I told her so, but I do not recall her telling me the chairs needed to be reupholstered, a different profession, (maybe that is what she meant by "refurbishing", but she wasn't specific). I think my profile conveys that I do not upholster, the subject of upholstery came up only because I was trying to understand the amount of refinishing she needed. I am happy to recommend an upholsterer should the customer ask, but again , I was never told of the need. Regarding her final comment: the "business" she refers to ( the one I do not know how to run or sell ) may be the business she wanted me to be, not the business I have. I try to be upfront and honest with potential clients, conveying no more than what I can really do for them regarding quality of work, price, turnaround time, and services provided, (you will earn more dissatisfaction by promising what you really can't deliver.) I am sorry for the misunderstanding this client had, in the future I will try to be clearer regarding cold weather, and if need be, what I can do for them and why or why not. (But as I recall this conversation, it was not clear to me what this member specifically needed - especially as regarding delivery and upholstery - or hoped to find when she called my number.) It is a maxim in business that you can have a thousand satisfied customers and you will never hear anything, but the ten dissatisfied customers will be heard loud and clear. So it is with Angie's List. I completed two jobs for Angie's List members in December, their expectations were exceeded in every way, one of them was literally moved to tears by the results. I asked them to write a good report for me, and these reports do not appear, several others do not either, the latest positive report is nearly one year old. Thank You for reading my response, Donald Nichols (aka "delicate genius")

Don did an excellent job of restoring our piece. In addition, he gave us some helpful information about the best way for us to go about stripping and refinished several pieces that we have. We enjoyed looking at the many projects that he has and were amazed in his ability to match existing pieces.
Description of Work: We had an old piece that required extensive repair. It needed a door made and some of the carving restored.

The item was picked up promptly. It took a bit longer to repair (2 weeks vs 1 week) due to illness, but once it was finished, delivery was prompt. He even fixed a broken pin that connects the siderail. The bed looks like brand new.
Description of Work: Repaired a sleigh bed headboard that was damaged during a move. There was a crack 1.5 ft long in the wood. This was a small job for him.

I found Don Nichols (the owner of Restorations) on this list, after an unsuccessful visit to another re-finisher in my neighborhood. The other guy quoted a much higher price and also addressed me and my (6'3'') 20-year-old son as "ladies" (no doubt due to son's moderately long hair). Don was friendly and interesting. He showed us a chair he was working on that he had bought for $5.00 at a yard sale, and it was beautiful. I got the clear impression that he really loves his work. He did not fix absolutely everything wrong with my furniture, but did what he could while staying in my budget. Even so, both items look gorgeous.
Description of Work: I brought him a dresser and a table that both needed refinishing badly. Neither is a valuable antique. He took the job seriously anyway, and when I picked them up they looked better than new. He also volunteered that the dresser had been handmade, probably of either magnolia or poplar wood, which was an interesting footnote. He also made minor repairs on both pieces (replacing drawer pulls, bracing table legs).

Don Nichols is an honest, straightforward guy. He gave me alternatives at different price points. I chose the mid-range one. The work done was at a good price and was completed on time. Arguably the table looks better now that it did when it was purchased. I am very pleased and would take any work I needed done to Restorations.
Description of Work: I have a teak table (for 8)purchased in Indonesia. The table had cracked and split- probably due to sun exposure and green wood. I took it to another place in The Heights for repair; was totally ripped off and was told refinishing would cost $1300. I found Restorations on Angie's List and took it there for refinishing.
