When they came out they were very professional. They were very clean and went to extra measure to make sure they covered up the area they were working with. They had me examine everything after they finished to make sure that it met my expectations. The cost was fine!
Description of Work: The man who came out to give me an estimate told me that I didn't really need it but that he would do it if I wanted. I felt like that was very honest and unusual.

Payless did a thorough and good job from what I can tell (it is hard to get around the attic). They arrived on time and were clean and efficient. They spent about 4 hours to do the job; that tells me they did a good one. Other contractors said it would only take them an hour to finish (for about the same price). I got them to write a contract that said they would install R-30 fiberglass according to the manufacturer s specs (as labeled on the bags-On a search engine: "Attic Guard Fiberglass"). They used Attic Guard Fiberglass and installed it with a blown-in process. I was able to count the number of bags that they installed to be sure that they used amount they were supposed to use. I was not able to see if they left the soffits clear (soffits are those vents you see under the eaves that connect to the attic). They said they did. This is important-I recommend letting them know that you want them to leave them clear just to be sure (I forgot). If I had a gripe it would be that it was almost impossible to get them to put in fiberglass. They really wanted to sell me a recycled paper product. They said that for equivalent R values the paper product insulated better. I could not wrap my head around that. R value is supposed to be the insulating capacity of the product-any product. Maybe there is something they know that I don't. I do think I am kind of smart. As you can tell, trust in contractors is not my strong suit. If you are going to do an insulation project make sure you know the differences between fiberglass and the paper product. I chose fiberglass. You don't have to. With fiberglass I did not have to worry about fire retardant chemicals in the paper product, the dense fiber further weighting down my existing fiberglass, and insulation settling in the future. Fiberglass is only supposed to settle about 2%. I had to find that out on the web-Payless would not tell me this. In fact they said they would not warranty fiberglass from settling at all. If I did not want the paper product to settle they said I had to buy a warranty-this basically involved buying more of it. I had to dig around on the web to find out which insulation I preferred. I recommend starting with the US Department of Energy website. As a place to start learning about what amount of insulation you might need and then dig really hard to figure out which insulating product you prefer. I am sure there are advantages for the paper product. So summing it up I would say the installation job was professional; I think it was reasonably priced compared to others. My complaint is that the sales job was murky. I guess that is probably the norm for the entire insulation business to begin with. Anybody with a business card and a truck can say that they can do it. That is hard to compete with. I guess that is why I chose Payless they have a good reputation on Angie s List, and insulation is all that they do.

They did an excellent job from the initial quote to completing the job. The two men that added the insulation were professional and cleaned up afterwards. They ensured all my bathroom fans were not blocked by the insulation in the attic and they made sure the water heaters remained lit. They keep the dust to a minimum and put down protective plastic on the floor where the hose entered my home. The insulation was blown in right where it was supposed to be and at the right depth. Casey, my consultant, did a good job with the estimate as well.
Description of Work: They added Celbar loose-fill insulation to my attics, R34. They covered each recessed light and used plastic sheeting to minimize dust entering my home.

Payless insulation arrived right on time, in fact about 15 minutes early, and finished in about 3.5 hours, compared with the office estimate of 4 to 5 hours. They were very diligent and professional. I inspected the attic afterward and felt like they did a great job. They asked about vents, exhaust fans, and recessed lighting in advance to prep those items properly before beginning the actual insulation installation.
Description of Work: Re-insulate my attic (2213 sq.ft.) up to an insulation rating of R38 (add 10.6 inches of Celbar loosefill cellulose blown-in insulation, and install an attic tent around the top of the indoor attic access ladder and enclosure.

They came, were very nice, measured the attic and gave a list of prices for thickness of cellulose insulation sprayed in. Prices were a bit high considering the square footage was higher than the tax assessor listed it, but besides that, he was ready to go with the estimate. The problem was what they did not say. They did not tell him he had open chases that should be covered and sealed. They did not offer a solution for the attic door. They did not mention the recessed lights. They did not give any indication that they were going to detail the decking around the AC or anything at all. Most important, they did not suggest that adding cellulose (heavy) insulation over already loaded 2 x 4 ceiling joists might be a problem. He could have blindly trusted them and chosen r38 total cellulose and seen some real problems. I considered calling them back for details, but felt that they might not do a quality job. Insulation is about the details, not just the depth. Estimated cost was $900.

Response from Payless Insulation
Sorry to hear your expectations were not met. We have been in business since 1979 and have always had a free estimate where we answer many questions and also leave copies of our standards and why we use some of the materials we do, copy of insurance certificate, etc... Not sure where we went wrong, but we want you to know as an owner I care very much. The estimator also cares & we have always had great success in educating the consumer about insulation. Without asking, we have always had a solution for the attic opening-whether you have stairs or an attic scuttle, we include a denim cotton blanket at no charge. The upgrade would be a tent that is priced depending on size. Open chases, sealant and recessed are addressed when the estimate is done. I am not sure how this wasn't conveyed. When we add cellulose over 2" x 4"'s the sheetrock must be 1/2" or 5/8's" to withstand weight. Most homes are built this way. When a home has had the sheetrock improperly installed with 1/4" sheetrock, we would recommend that only an R19 be blown there. It is our standard practice to pressure fill under any HVAC deck when the cavities are open on either side. We certainly wished you had called us if you were not present at the estimate. Hopefully you can give us another chance in the future. We have built a strong reputation with trained estimators. I am the owner and have been at the company since its inception in 1979. I truly recommend always calling to clear anything up that doesn't make sense. We can cover many details that many companies skip. Again our apologies for any wires crossed.

A comprehensive and accurate estimate was given in a professional manner within two days of my original call. The work was scheduled for the following week. The workers arrived on time and carried out their work in a tidy and efficient manner. There was a small misunderstanding regarding the holes to be drilled to facilitate the pressure-filling but this confusion was quickly cleared up. The work took about 3 hours longer than anticipated but the workers cleaned up after themselves scrupulously and explained their actions throughout the day. We are very pleased with the work and can already feel the benefit.

I was satisfied with the work, that Payless did. It was a complicated job, because we have a build in, in the attic and they had to go around it and over it. They had no problem getting the job done and they went one step above the job without me having to ask. They would move stuff for me and put it back and just did little things, that stood out to me that they didn't have to.

Susan Quave came out the day after I called to give me an estimate. She was extremely thorough and explained the entire process to me. I called the office to set up the appointment for installation and the two-man crew called when they were on their way. They took care to cover all the floors from the entry point to the attic access and completed the installation in less time than originally estimated. They were courteous, professional, and did such a great job in removing all the trash and debris that you wouldn't have suspected they had even been there. All in all, a most pleasant experience.

Several months later, during a summer hot spell, I found a sizable portion of my ceiling soggy and collapsed. I found insulation in the pan and felt Payless responsible. Several folks came out to inspect - prior air-conditioning company, adjuster selected by Payless whose exam was meticulous. He cleared primary and secondary drains (no charge). Both had mold and mildew but very little insulation. My lines had not been properly cleaned several months earlier. Mr Kornbleet and Casey Wilson from payless called explaining findings When we reviewed all the information, I was convinced Payless was not culprit. Nonetheless they graciously came out and refilled my attic after the repairs at no charge. I want to commend them on their reasonable approach.
Description of Work: Payless initially placed insulation to R36 in my attic. From estimate to completion they were personable, professional and prompt. Overall, I felt their price was fair.

Susan came to our home, listened to our concerns, inspected the job site, described her findings and recommendations, prepared and explained a detailed estimate of costs and how the work would be performed. We decided to proceed so Susan made necessary arrangements. Later that day, the scheduler called and we agreed on a date and time for the workers to come. The scheduler called the day before to confirm the date and time of service. The two workers arrived exactly on time. They reviewed their work order with us, and went to work. They laid out covers to protect our floors and furnishings, worked as an effective team, and gave us periodic status reports. When they completed the project, they showed us what they had done and answered our questions. They cleaned up all the project residue. The bill was the exact amount Susan estimated. The workers left with a smile and moved on to the next of two more jobs that day. We were very pleased with their service.
