First of all, the plumber that Jim uses is outstanding. This job started out as a mission to fix a rotten smell that came and went under the kitchen island. I had several people tell me I was imagining things, but Jim and his plumber figured out quickly that we had an issue with the gas pipe under the kitchen floor. Once we determined that we had to rip up the floor and repair the gas line, Jim came up with several estimates to repair the line or to go in with an induction stove. Through out the estimate process, Jim was very responsive and had a sub come out and bid for each portion of the job. The total estimate was quite detailed and easy to understand and the final cost was just a bit higher as we ended up with more carpentry work than originally planned. I did cursory checks with people who have had similar jobs done and I think he was in the ballpark on cost for what we did, although I did not solicit multiple official bids for the job. By the time we figured out the scope, Jim had been to the house 5 or 6 times and I was pleased with his responsiveness and overall demeanor, so I gave him the job. The finished product is quite stunning and exactly what I wanted. The best part of working with Jim is that he is always on time, checks on progress and provided near-daily updates to me.
Description of Work: We completed a kitchen "face lift" with new countertops, backsplash, cabinet doors, cooktop and faucets. Painted all the kitchen cabinets inside and out and installed new door and drawer hardware.

The estimate was really too pricey for my budget. The man who came out was very very thorough but his numbers were way beyond my remodeling budget. And it was quite a bit higher than the other bidders so I ended the process with him.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from Old School Builders in the past couple of weeks for substantial remodeling because I was adding a second floor to the house.
There were no surprises. Anything unexpected that was found, that was not stipulated in the estimate, was communicated to me before the work done along with the additional price. The work began & ended on the days that were understood by me. Extremely satisfied with the finished product.
Description of Work: House re-roofed, old shingles torn off; rotted wood replaced; new shingles put on. Porch re-built. Old porch flooring removed. Rotted wood supports replaced with new supports. New tongue in groove flooring installed.

I had been in my house for about 15 years, and was anxious about the whole remodeling process. I had received quotes from others, but felt like I was "talked down to" and not provided full information. From the beginning Jim, the owner, listened carefully to what I wished to do. He was respectful of my choices, but was careful to be sure I knew for what I was asking. He also was good about giving me choices as to subcontractors (most expensive to least expensive). When problems arose he was quick to address them. The job was done in less than 2 months time. Having never had a remodel before, I was assured by my friends and acquaintances it was done in record time! Jim had a reasonable guarantee, so when things arose after "done" he addressed them. I strongly recommend him.
Description of Work: Remodel of a 56 year old home. Exterior "refurbishing", including re-pointing, painting, and select new siding. Interior: rebuild master bath, expansion; new hot water heater; re-vamped venting for heating and cooling; new lights and fixtures throughout house; new refacing of all old cabinetry including new pulls; new drawers in kitchen; repainting all rooms. I got replacement, high energy efficient windows in all rooms (there were many).
